i installed a newer version (or so i thought ) to move the data and the cache to the storage card, however the new version does not have street view.
so how the heck can i put the old version back on without a hard reset ???
anyone ?
Don't know what you are talking about, the newest Google Maps for WM is 3.3.1 and it has streetview. To use streetview, click and hold your finger on some street to bring up the context menu. When that street actually has streetview, you can choose it from the context menu. When a street doesn't have streetview, it won't be in your context menu obviously. I agree this is not the best implementation done by Google, but that's just the way it is for now.
Ignore me please Dumb moment !!
soft reset then found google maps on device and created a new shortcut
problem now solved

Does anybody know how to change the location of Google Map cache?!
I dont think that they have got round to that yet - I've looked for a while, and theres no reg hacks or whatever. Shame that all the others like live and virtual earth can change directory, but they're maps (at least the sat ones) are years out of date.
Latest dogfood build of live is much nicer, scrolls better than google maps though, shame about the maps.

After initially only being available on Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone, Google Streetview has finally come to Windows Mobile. Street View lets you access street level imagery to help orient yourself when looking for places, businesses, or getting directions.
Besides Street View, the new version of Google Maps for mobile also has a number of other new features: request walking directions (in addition to driving and public transit) to get anywhere on foot, receive transit alerts from participating public transportation authorities, and see what other people think of a place by reading reviews directly on your phone. The app is also said to be more responsive and easier to use.
Download the app by visiting google.com/gmm on your phone.
Okay, so how do we go about updating our current version? I dont want two versions of Google Maps residing on my device..

go to m.google.com/maps using IE on your phone and update. It will ask to delete the previous version and you can even save your "favorites"
er.. isnt the previous version on the ROM (i.e undeletable?)
Just install the new Cab. it will delete the old version on your device and install the new version.
it only dloads from pocket IE
yep - it installed neatly.
simply awesome and well overdue.
Google Maps with Street View runs great. Street View is really cool. Just install the cab.
how cool is that

i dont know what rom you are using, but I have WWE Unlocked rom, when i received touch HD, Google Maps is in the list of "Remove Programs", it is the only one out of all the preinstalled programs. and I was able to uninstall it. and from the "Memory" settings, I was able to see the difference in storage. but yes you can install the new one without manually remove the one old, it will uninstall old one automatically.
Is it possible to use the traditional version of google maps anyway after the installtion of the street-view-dersion like deactivating the streent-view-option?
THX

I only just noticed this too!
If streetview is available, the 2D map becomes 3D.
If you want to just test it out, search NYC or Las Vegas Blvd

I have 1.14.401.3 WWE and Google Maps is also in my Remove Programs.
It can only be upgraded in PIE or it can only be used in PIE?
If I download the cab can I use Opera with it still?
I have downloaded .cab file posted by elisir79. old version removed during instalation. The only thing is - I don't know why I can't find Street View option.
Do a search for something, then it's an option.

search up something then in the results page you have the option to street view. OR tap and HOLD on a street (assuming it has street view at that location), then you will see the "bubble" going around the point of tap, and you get the choice to street view.

you are confused here. the OP said using PIE, it's' because www.google.com/gmm will recognize the browser and leads you to the download page. if you use opera to go to www.google.com/gmm it won't redirect you to the download page because google thinks it's a full desktop browser (hence, no need for google mobile map). this has nothing to do with regular browsing
Another day with Android...more questions.
1. Can I stop Facebook birthdays from being placed in my calendar?
2. Can I prevent a contact picture from being replaced by a Facebook picture?
3. Can I store test versions of various Android versions on my SD card by simply renaming each folder to xyzAndroid, abcAndroid, etc and then renaming back to "Android" and running the 2 startup files in the renamed folder?
4. Are all Android settings stored in the Android folder? If I switch between versions, will I have to start from scratch setting things up?
5. Is there a good navigation app that allows for the creation of custom offline maps? In WM I use MapSnap, which allows me to use saved Google maps.
6. When Google maps newest update is released (rumored to have offline saved map capabilities) can it simply be installed to my phone or will the program need to be added to an updated Android version?
7. Is there a way to use synced Outlook Tasks in Android?
And on and on and on.... I'll stop for now.
Thanks in advance.

answer to problem no. 2
go to EDIT in a contact, click on their picture on the top left corner, and select the type of picture you want to use for that particular contact.

I have a question. The queistion is that can the android hotspot built-in feature can be extracted and be put into an apk from the hd2 and install it on the tp2 android?? just a noob question...I'm sorry if this question was asked before...
1. I use pure grid calender ($1.99), allows me to tweak small settings if I want
2. The above method works for me, don't know why it didn't work for you
3. Yes you can put a few android folders in your sd card, just only rename the one you need "Android" and make sure you check the settings in your android dual boot software on windows , if you are using any, because some need you to specify the folder which you want to boot, some just search for Haret, and boot from that folder
4.Yes, all the settings are in the android folder, and copying one build's data img won't work with the other, but use a paid or free software called titanium backup and you can usually get your setting back.
5. There is this modded version of Google maps by brut floating around, search around, allows offline map cache navigation
6. The current offline navigation currently works on Htc sense 2.2 available with the new new desire HD builds. Install one of the desire HD builds, maybe the one by m-deejay, you should get offline navigation

I installed MDJ_FroYo_HD_v._4.4_MDJ_S7.6HD and started to play around with it.
2. The correct pictures are showing so far in the new install.
6. Looked at the available mapping apps, Navigation, Maps, and Locations. Don't see that any of them store maps except Locations, which may only have US maps (none of Costa Rica, where I am). Is there somewhere in Navigation or Maps that will allow me to store maps? BTW, is there a way to delete the Locations maps? Lots of space being used.
Thanks.

Turns out I can just uncheck "Facebook" in the Calendar settings. BUT, that brings up another question: Under the settings for Calendar is "PC Sync". What does "PC Sync" sync with??
Thanks.

The Google Maps app for android caches the map tiles of areas you visit. Also, the GM Brut mod allows you to cache map tiles to the SD card. I'm on a very limited data plan, so I'd like to have my entire city cached to my phone memory/SDcard. So far, the only way I can think of is to manually scroll all over the city using different zoom levels which very annoying... and stupid given the fact that it'll be erased if you install a new ROM.
Long time ago when I got a iPhone 3G, I remember I easily download all the Google Maps of my entire city using a desktop application called GMDL (Global Map Download Tool) which after download it, you convert them into iPhone maps cache format using an option it have. Then you navigate inside iPhone and put the maps "cache" you downloaded into the map cache directory... and voilà, easy as that.
My question is: Is there a way like the one I've explained to do that? Again, I want to be able to use Google Maps anywhere in the city without having to download the maps on-the-fly over my data plan. Is there a practical way to achieve this, so I won't have to scroll several times (once for each zoom level) over the entire city?
A desktop application that can export to GM format would be the best solution.
Thanks.

Check this

I've considered MapDroyd, but it is an Android application. Is there any desktop application which can do all things I explained GMDL do? I remember it was an easy and confortable application to use.
Thanks.

Check If the downloaded maps are in a picture format, if it is then you can use gallery to view the map, unless Google maps can open it, which I doubt. Those are the only two I know of that can help you.

Wouldn't it be easier to spend $20 on CoPilot Live and get the entire North America coverage?
There was an article just a couple of days ago that states that Google maps is going to offer an offline option but it probably won't come for many months.
Hi there,
Is there, or can somebody make, an app that opens the shortcut to Google maps driving mode? The shortcut made by maps doesn't show up on my HU and in this way i hope i can start GM in driving mode.
Google Maps doesn't create the shortcut. The Launcher does.
You are probably using CarWebGuru. That doesn't show additional intents/activities by default.
Long tab the icon, select explore and you get all available launch intents.
It should be very simple to create such a kick-start app. I already created several. I will have a look tonight.
Edit: It seems that this is only possible by specifying a destination. In that case you can't start it directly in Drive mode.
I'm indeed using CWG, my favourite because of its many customization options and it's the best looking. Too bad Google maps and cover art don't work in the main widget.
Tried the long press before but that didn't work. I hope you can make that app. That would make me, and probably other people also, very happy.

There is indeed no icon for Drive mode as Google itself does not support that.
I created an app that starts Google Maps in Drive mode, but that is actually not possible without a destination. So it will not go any farther than this.
see attached:
- apk (only a starter so only 18 Kb)
- launch icon (so you know how to find it) and it is called "StartapsInDriveMode" in the launcher
- screenshot of Maps
Tested it on both my phone and head unit and it works.
Thanks allot.
It briefly shows the full application and then switches to driving mode. This is the same behavior with the shortcut created by maps, so this is normal.
Nice job.
And btw: Google maps note also works in the main widget of CarWebGuru... I hope this stays like this.
