Unlocking Hero, what happens to apps? - Hero, G2 Touch General

I got my Hero last week (finally, had to wait for Telus to get our corporate account set up, it took weeks). My contract was up on last friday and I told the Telus store I was dealing with that if the corporate plan wasn't set up I would take my Hero, unlock it and switch to Bell. I bought the unlock code around 3:30 thinking it wasn't going to happen. At 5:15 they completed it and now I am on a MTM.
If I put in my son's sim card (fido) and unlock the phone will I lose my settings when I put my telus sim back in?

If you mean your application settings then, probably, no - you won't lose settings because applications usually use SD card to store information. I suppose your system settings will also be preserved, although you should take into account that if you switch you cellular network provider you will need to update APN settings so you can connect to the Internet via 3G.

Help! How do u register w/o a data plan

Can somebody help me out
i have a mytouch 3g but dont have any data plan
how do i register it without a data plan
help! I know how to do it w/o a data plan on g1
but not this one
I don't know of any way to register without a data plan, but you can pay for just 1 day of the data plan. Sign up for the data plan, register, and then send an email to [email protected] saying you don't need the data plan any longer. They will remove it no questions asked by email.
enable wlan?!
btw, there is no need to register with google if you dont have a data plan.
this feature just enables online content.
how do i ENABLE WLAN
Can't you register through a wifi network?
It is what I did on my Vodafone Magic. Hope it helps.
my magic asked me when i started for the first time whether i want to enable wifi.
afterwards it asked for reg.
mytouch actually requires you to have a data plan to register or login to gmail account before you can use access anything. I see no one is able to bypass the register/login screen on the mytouch 3g.
Ask someone for their SIM card who already has the data plan, put it in your phone and activate it with a new gmail account or sign in if you already have a gmail. Then put your SIM card into the phone and you will have access to the phone. Hope that helps.
i got an unlocked mytouch that was factory reset...when i boot it with a sim that has a data plan and set the apn for my country (i live in Caribbean) i get a little "E" icon on which i think is the Edge or GPRS symbol , but the sign in fail...saying that the 'its unable to connect to google servers" yes the setting are correct and the sim has the data plan cause it works with other phone where i live
also... from what i read there is now way to bypass the activation screen using wifi like you can do with the G1? is that true or am i looking in the wrong places
Help...frustrated....

Im having the same problem...im on at&t wireless without a data plan and cannot get pass the login/activation screen...this sucks I can't even make a simple phone call...
I've got the same problem, anybody figure it out?
go to a T-Mobile store. Ask if you can borrow the sim from one of their demo phones for a minute. once registered you can use it all you like.
If I already have a sim with an iphone data plan on it shouldn't the connection work to register?
So it has to be a T-mob data plan to register the phone and get past the activation? I would like to know as I had to master reset mine and I live in Trinidad and Tobago. Thank you.
First of all, you need tmobile data plan if it is a mytouch 3g because the APN settings are factory set to tmobile APN. You can't change those until you have signed into google and have access to settings and other features.
If you are a tmobile customer, then just log in to tmobile.com and sign up for data plan. it'll take anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours to get data plan. sign on to google and then cancel the data plan.
If you are NOT a tmobile customer then find someone who is a tmobile customer with a data plan or go to one of those tmobile stores at the mall and politely ask them to use their sim to register your phone. Or find a friend. I don't know if there is any way around it.
Finally, ROOT your phone so you don't have to worry about this crap!
Just a note of caution. If your phone has donut on it then you will have to downgrade to cupcake before you can root and that will require you to login to google one more time, so don't cancel the data plan until you do this if you intend on rooting your phone.
OK, so as I mentioned before I am from Trinidad and Tobago so the option of "going to a T-moble store" or "borrowing a friend's sim" is out of the question. Even if I do get it to the US it would be to get it registered and after I root I would be back to square one.
Another thing I saw mentioned in your post was that the APN is set to Tmobile but in my APN entries there aren't any. Does this affect any thing?

It's easy! Just skip the whole registration process and from there you will go to the home screen. From there, you can setup your wifi and then register your device! At least this is for the Google phones.
MT3G does not allow you to skip the registraiton process.
try getting a bmobile sim card with a data plan or a data sim as wee call it in trinidad and use that to register the phone, bmobiles APN settings are simple, just type in Internet as the APN and leave everything else blank, that should work...

Tmo tab on uk network?

So i am currently in the uk (northern ireland to be exact) when i try to select a network (O2, Vodafone, tmobile) it wont register, it sees the network but it wont connect to it. Besically i am using the tab with my tmobile sim not a local sim, and the tab is still network locked to tmobile. Any ideas on how i can get it to register to a local network? I am not looking to unlock the tab (not right now at least) and run it with a local sim just trying to connect to a network just in case i need to make a call.

Do you have "WorldClass International Roaming" enabled on your plan?
Regards,
Dave
Well i am not sure,i actually checked my account and all i see is somethibg called world class international service, my wife has this option on her line but her phones does not connect either so i not sure thats not the only thing that needs to be activated. There is no way for me to select that service on my line. I also have an old phone wich was unlocked and using a prepaid sim card and it does not connect either. Could it be the sim that is not allowing to connect?

You can add that above mentioned roaming service for the time you are away. I think you can do it through the att.com website. But get ready for a shock - it's a buttload of cash for data and cell.
You're at a pc, right? If it's windows 7 and you have your cable, why not unlock it and buy a local sim? That's my solution when I'm out of the US.
As metioned on my previous post my wife has that service on her line and she still cant get it to register on the local network. Might be the sim we have, tmo, its not letting us connect. Ill have to call them when i get back to the us and find out why. I am waiting to contact tmo to get my unlock code for the tab, i am not confortable using adb.

You can follow the cut-paste steps from Roto to unlock tab without adb. Just get a terminal emulator from the market, and open it, then do the copy-paste in the emulator. It's cool!
Did you check your network settings to enable roaming?
I have also noticed that the GPS was not working either, I was driving and had GPS test running for over 5minutes and it never locked the most I got was 4 satellites but didn't lock on any of them. Mind you I was driving out in the country and clear skies no idea why GPS would not lock in northern Ireland.

When I can't get a lock, like right after flashing a new rom/kernal, I go into recovery (power +volume up), and clear the cache partition (don't factory reset!), then I use a market app called Here I Am 2 to get the first position lock in a new region or country.

I did have roaming enabled and still nothing, i will call tmo to ask and see what they say.

The only way to know if you are unlocked is by using another carrier's sim. Just borrow one from a friendly local, or buy a prepaid sim to use for local calls.

Guess ill have to stop by an att store but with att buying tmob it will not matter soon.

So i seemed to have unlocked the tab using rotos method, i went out and got a att sim to try and see if it actually worked but i can not get the tab to run on the att sim. I did use the sim to unlock my tmo vibrant and it worked with no issues, so what am i doing wrong? Do i need a new modem for the sim to work? I also tried using the apn settings from the vibrant running the att sim and nothing, tried apn settings from google and nothing, what gives? Any advise? Thanks.

Verizon: Global Roaming Problem (on return to USA)

I've been tracking and testing a bug where if you activate your N6 on Verizon, then switch the SIM to another carrier (say TMO) to test your phone will not re-connect to VZW when you put the original SIM in. This happens if you change the "Global" setting the LTE (Recommended). After you set that on TMO (or AT&T or...) the options menu only gives you 2G/3G/LTE where when activated on VZ gives you "LTE/3G/1x/Global". The only way to get the phone back on VZ is to factory reset.
Today - I just came back from a trip to Canada where in Global mode the phone roamed on one of their GSM based carriers. I didn't change the roaming mode out of Global (I know better) but when I was back in the US the phone wouldn't go back to VZW - instead went to "Emergency Calls Only" I checked the carrier settings and in the time I was in Canada (2 weeks), the Global option disappeared, leaving only 2G/3G/LTE...and no Verzion. It was done. Factory reset time.
Hope they've spotted this issue in their "intensive" testing process and that's why they are holding up the release. If not..be prepared if you roam globally on the N6 to have a dead radio when you come home and factory reset.--unless there is a service/app settings that can be easily wiped...

I had the same issue (my thread is in the Q&A subforum). Nothing short of a factory reset would fix. Hopefully Google gets on this and fixes it. I travel overseas for work frequently, and the whole point of getting the Nexus 6 was so I could use one phone here and there!
I'm on ATT using a GPS version phone, and I noticed in the "Preferred Network Type" my default setting was on "Global". But it only has choices of "LTE (recommended)", "3G", and "2G". So if I switch to LTE, I have no way of changing back to Global.
Subscribing to thread for a fix.
Can you not change the network type in the *#*#4636#*#* menu to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"?
I just switched back and forth. Not sure I understand what is going on here.
Edit. Ahhh but you also switched carriers, interesting.
well thats a bit concerning... I'm leaving for taiwan in a couple days and was looking forward to just dropping in a sim over there.
So even with 5.0.1 you cant go back to VZW without a factory reset?
Okay I just got back from a trip to Taiwan. I switched to 2 different carrier Sim cards.
Upon returning to the states, I popped in my Verizon sim card and everything works fine.
Yeah, just do the *#*#4636#*#* and change the network that which you'd like to connect. So for Verizon, you would choose CDMA/LTE in the drop down menu. Once you do that, your network options in the regular settings will change.
Same thing happened to me on a recent trip to Spain. I made a backup before traveling and upon return I flashed the backup to get it to work again in the states.

Has anyone seen any updates on this? Is Google aware of this bug? I'm using my Moto X overseas since I don't want to factory reset my Nexus 6 when I get home. This was the whole point of getting a Nexus 6 in the first place: I could use the same phone here and home with a simple SIM swap!
Has anyone tried
fastboot oem config carrier vzw
to see if that will "jump start" the phone back to Verizon?

That did nothing for me. Tried it earlier this week
Those with the radio issues could try to flash only the radio.img using fastboot. This would let you restore the radio without having to wipe the entire device. Hopefully a fix will come when Verizon officially releases the Nexus 6.
My solution was to pop in an active T-Mobile sim, turn the phone on, and then back off, and then pop in the vzw sim.
That seemed to solve the problem.
Interesting. Wonder why a US GSM carrier would fix the problem, but a foreign GSM carrier causes it. Maybe I'll give that a try next trip (in 2 weeks).
I don't think its the matter of a foreign GSM carrier causing the problem.....
I think the problem is Verizon.
I don't hear of this issue with anyone else but Verizon customers.
I doubt it, since the inability to switch modes is present even before the Verizon SIM is inserted. I think it's a bug within Android itself.

I just tried this exact same thing after being in London and Budapest. My Verizon SIM in my Nexus 6 wouldn't register on their network. I put in the T-Mobile SIM and it did work and register with no problems. Switched back to Verizon's SIM and no luck. Still not able to register on the Verizon network.
To clarify, the verizon sim roamed onto canadian providers without problems. When I returned to a normal Verizon service area, the phone wouldn't register again (on verizon) until I popped in a t-mobile sim, and then switched back to the Verizon sim.

Yes, that's what I did. Went to London/Budapest with the Verizon SIM roaming. Landed back in the States, no more Verizon connection on the Verizon SIM. Popped in the T-Mobile SIM and it works perfectly.
Tried doing the switch back like you mentioned, but no luck at first. Had to try a few times. Back to life now.
Thanks very much.

Unable to register phone on T-Mobile network

I've been a T-Mobile customer with my OnePlus 1, got the OnePlus 5 today and went by the local T-Mobile store and got a new SIM card. A couple hours later I got around to actually setting up my phone. I realized I wasn't getting app verification codes, so I called T-Mobile to make sure the SIM card activated properly. She had me confirm the SIM card was inserted properly, then she had me turn the phone off and she "sent it a signal." That got text and data working, but still no go on the phone. She transferred me to the next tier up tech support. On the phone with them, we turned off WiFi, WiFi calling preferred, VoLTE, and automatic selection for Network operators. The phone did it's search and we selected T-Mobile 4G for the Network operator. The phone says it registered on the network, but T-Mobile says it didn't. We tried the second SIM slot but no change. We did a couple reboots and still a no go. I was then told that since it's not a T-Mobile branded phone, they can't guarantee that it will work. They recommend I put the SIM in a T-Mobile phone to confirm that the SIM works - I'll do that when I get home and try it in my wife's phone.
When I turn on VoLTE, I get text and can make calls, otherwise if I make a call, it just calls T-Mobile.
Under Settings > About phone > Status > SIM status, Cellular network state shows disconnected.
I also see under Settings > SIM & network > SIM 1 > SIM name it shows the name as T-Mobile but Carrier says Unknown
Fresh out of the box, running 4.5.3. Has anyone else had any problems getting their OnePlus 5 to register on T-Mobile? I searched the T-Mobile support site but didn't find anything helpful.
I'll try the SIM card in the wife's T-Mobile S7 when I get home, but if anyone has any pointers, I'd appreciate the help.
OnePlus 5 on T-Mobile here and no issues at all.

Same here. I also have 0 issues
Are you using the latest 4.5.4 update for OP5? They had fixes for VoLTE not connecting. Even though I think that was Europe only thing, the download made its way to my phone automatically. If you're not on 4.5.4, go upgrade (it's a simple thing to do)
What are your APNs set to?
Goto...
Settings
Sim and network
Sim x (1 or 2, wherever the sim is installed)
Access point names
Without doing anything besides entering my sim card into the phone and starting it, I have 4 options
If you have anything outside of your current provider, add them. The easiest way to do this is to open up another TMobile phone you have, goto to the same location on that phone and copy settings manually to your OP5.
I did this for my wife's S7 coming from Verizon. Although she doesn't get WiFi calling without flashing firmware (which I'll be doing when she's ready) you shouldn't have that issue.
Bad SIM card
Turns out the SIM card was bad. Went to the T-Mobile store, let the guy double check everything, then he grabbed a new SIM card, popped it in and two minutes later everything was working. I asked him how often he sees bad SIM cards, he said one or two a year.

My phone is in unlock purgatory

I'm in a really strange position with my S7 Edge. So I've had Sprint service for about 6 months to ensure that I can unlock it with no problems and my phone is paid off in full. I bought a Mintsim phone plan a few weeks ago, since its really cheap and basically the same plan I had with Sprint for 1/4th of the price. I activated my Mintsim sim card and ported my old number from Sprint. I paid off any existing balance on my account and asked them to unlock the phone several times and they said that its finally unlocked domestically and internationally but my Mintsim sim card is still being listed as "Invalid card. Emergency calls only". I've called Mintsim and had them reset things from their side but still no dice. Sprint finally gave me the MSL code but Mintsim is saying they can't do anything from their end. I'm currently on software version G935UUES4BQG1 and I flashed an unlocked ROM a while back and my phone is unrooted. I'm not sure what to do at this point, I'd really appreciate any help and input I can get. Thanks in advance!
So, for future reference for anyone who might be in the same situation as me, I fixed it.
Heres what I did:
1. Flash stock Sprint firmware. This was probably the most crucial part because when I had the unlocked firmware and tried to use my new sim card, I wasn't able to access the "Mobile Networks" option.
2. Insert your new Sim card and go to Settings -> Connections -> Mobile Networks and set your "Network Mode" to "Automatic".
3. Setup the APN as you see on their website or use T-Mobile's APN (some have better speeds using this).
4. Make sure your "Network operators" says "Mint" under it.
5. Restart your phone and wait a few minutes and you should be all set
Time to flash unlocked firmware again. The bloatware and Sprint logo during reboot, burn my eyes!
