i use resco file explorer.
it has the lock/encrypt option in any file in your device!
also (and that is very nice for me) if you make the installation by your pc(and not by cab) the encrypt option is working and at your pc!!
tested years now,in xp and vista

Cheers guys, im trying the resco file explorer as the SPB one is mainly for passwords, pins etc, im more looking at locking files in a folder etc.
I going to try the 7 day trail and see how it goes =]

This works great on my HD2.

Password protection of files .....

Hi All,
What is the best way to password protect (and even encrypt) some of your files (in particular excel and word files) on the XDA EXEC ?
It looks like Windows Mobile 5 doesn't support this, so I assume I will have to get a third party software for this ? Which one do you recommend that does just this ? any Freeware ?
Thanks.
This one is worth resurrecting anytime:

I was gonna say that my WM5 has encryption option in the built in File Explorer - tap and hold the file. I guess though it appears because Resco Explorer is installed.
It costs, but it's good
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp
Give it a try - that's free !
Rick - how do you unencypt those files? Do you have to access them through Resco, or just access them normally eg in Pocketword, and it asks for a password? That'd be cool...

Can't believe this is happening - I'm gonna give Vijay some information !!!
Anyway - after a bit of testing, the encrypted file can only be seen and decrypted in File Explorer or Resco File Explorer. It isn't recognised (and doen't appear) in PWord. Phew !
Thank you. I don't use too many apps that aren't mine really, so I'm grateful for the info!
Just my thought was, how'z about someone writes a custom device driver to interact with encrypted files to permit transparent encryption/decryption. Otherwise, the resco plugin is just equivalent to zipping (with "store" I guess, given WinCE's built in compression) and password protecting? Obtrusive but effective I suppose.
Another Offtopic thought I had. Anyone interested in doing a root kit 'sploit for WinCE? I was doing some R&D, but couldn't find any "honest" use for it, other then a la Sony, root hiding files from the OS. But this could be useful...

Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift

Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:

hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again

So Any luck running/installing any other programs on SnapVue?
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....
Excellent. I have sent myself the executable of PHM.lu's regedit, saved it into my documents, and am now able to access and edit the registry!

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

syncing diamond connected as hard drive?

Hi all,
is there a (free) sync tool to use with a diamond connected as hard drive without ActiveSync?
Great would be if the program does a diff/merge on the .txt- or .docx-files etc. and not just decide by changedate.

A good one which i've used for a while, is "Beyond Compare". I'm afraid it's not free, but it can be found elsewhere. Personally I think it's worth the charge, as I use it for all kinds of things. It does date, content, binary, CRC and many other comparison techniques to detect changes in files, and shows yu a side by side vew of a directory tree.
Um, doesn't your diamond ask you if you want to sync or use the internal storage as secondary drive ?
It's ok but you don't have access to the phone's ram or rom.

I believe WinMerge does the job
it already does
Try GoodSync
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the replies.
The tools look promising. I will test them the next days.
@dan168: Are you sure WinMerge has syncing capabilities?
You could use synctoy - its free from microsoft and does folder syncing.

Thanks for the hint. In general it seems to be useful. Do you know a way to use it not so much as an application but as a deamon syncing automatically.
As far as I know it relies on a specific Folder - in this case the drive letter. Is there a way to assign a specific letter to the diamond that does not change after reconnecting?
Armin
SyncToy seems to do the work - without merging.
Thanks to spone1 and the tutorial on about.com the diamond now is always drive letter "P:".
For syncing I start a batch file including this:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\SyncToy 2.0\SyncToyCmd" -R
PAUSE
Last thing is, that I have to disconnect the pda manually by clicking the icon in the task bar. Does anyone know a command line command?
That tool should do it, but I rather would use Vista directly.
Armin
1st of all the internal default (if you choose to sync as disk storage), is you will only be able to see and read and write to the main memory and the internal storage is off limits.
the rest of the solution offered are you need some sort of software to sync the folders from PC to Phone (vice versa)
what the thread starter wans (and what i wan also) is to turn this phone into a thumbdrive / portable flashdisk, with out activesync or any software and default as that when i pluck into any PC.
anyone has any solution to this?

Trying to hide por....I mean Important Documents? I found a good way is to Hide them on your PC. When you are ready to access them on your phone browse to the folder the hidden files are located and by default you should not see them. To see them click "Menu" in the bottom right of your screen. Then select "Show All Files". You should now be able to see the hidden files.
How about encrypting a folder? Try this, http://thewingster.com/filebarricader.aspx.

thanks for recommendation, but i dont think it's for wm 6.5....looks like a software many years ago.....
Just tried it out on my ATT TP2 with EnergyRom 6.5, works fine.
Hate to break it to you but 6.5 IS software from years ago, slightly touched up
i use FreeOTFE4pda its similar to truecrypt on your computer. The best part about this app is the encrypted volume you create can be mounted as a second sd card on your pda or if you copy the encrypted volume to your pc you can use the pc version to mount it as well. It's open source and supports all the common encryption algorithms.
descryption from their site.
FreeOTFE is a free, open source, "on-the-fly" transparent disk encryption program for PCs and PDAs
Using this software, you can create one or more "virtual disks" on your PC/PDA. These disks operate exactly like a normal disk, with the exception that anything written to one of them is transparently, and securely, encrypted before being stored on your computer's hard drive.
Features include:
* Highly portable - Not only does FreeOTFE offer "portable mode", eliminating the need for it to be installed before use, it also offers FreeOTFE Explorer - a system which allows FreeOTFE volumes to be accessed not only without installing any software, but also on PCs where no administrator rights are available. This makes it ideal for use (for example) with USB flash drives, and when visiting Internet Cafés (AKA Cybercafés), where PCs are available for use, but only as a "standard" user.
* Source code freely available
* Easy to use; full wizard included for creating new volumes
* Both PC and PDA versions are available; data encrypted on your PC can be read/written on your PDA, and vice versa. Supports all versions of MS Windows from Windows 2000 onwards (including Windows 7), and Windows Mobile 2003 and later (including Windows Mobile v6.5)
* No need to install it; making it ideal for use on USB memory drives, etc
* Support for encrypted Linux volumes (Cryptoloop "losetup", dm-crypt and LUKS)
* Available in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Czech, Japanese, Croatian and Greek - with support for other language translations
* Optional support for smartcards and security tokens
* It's powerful: Supporting numerous hash (including SHA-512, RIPEMD-320, Tiger) and encryption algorithms (including AES, Twofish and Serpent) in several modes (CBC, LRW and XTS) - providing a much greater level of flexibility than a number of other (including commercial!) OTFE systems
* Encrypted volumes may either be file, partition, or even disk based
thanks for the help to all of you guys thanks ....

Explorer=)

I HAVE tested a nice tool . you can get in Windows store :
search for:
Pocket File Manager
it is a real file Manager.... some less fuctions are missing but it is very very nice.. and all they have told me it is impossible.... it is possible how you can see it
it works fine and great .... it can follow: send every file by Bluetooth... you can open every file it is legal docx, rar, zip txt . jpeg, mp3 , mp4 ... realy legal ... it opens what is on the device! !!! and you see a great file structure and you can use skydrive........ everyone who says it is impossible im think that they doesn't try whats possible ...
I have find somtehing interessting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290261
maybeee it should us help to get a Explorer to wp8
Have you looked at the description? It is limited in exactlly the same way as described around here all the time.
Limitation (Please read it!):
Windows phone has some limitations which prevent third party applications from accessing parts of files system. You cannot access video files, music files, Document folder. So, until Microsoft open it, please do not ask us to implement this feature. It is impossible right now.

It can access SkyDrive, FTP servers and it's own private storage. You CAN NOT access the phones Documents Folder and other Folders. You can launch an Office Document and edit it but it will then be saved to the Office Hub and the Explorer Application will still retain the old version prior to editing.
So while this does look like it works around it a file explorer in the way that people are demanding is still not possible.

i have tested the tool ! and it works .... it reads out some lokal files and the complete Photo and Video library!! it is a tool for lokal the link in the link it is development of it that will be release in future
but that what im testing it works everything what im saying.. and it is a file Explorer for local and for skydrive!!!! as i tested some other tool too ... it is a pdf Reader... not the Microsoft one! another one ... it can be read out the pdf files of sdcard and on local phone ... .. so im think it is possible to do a great file Explorer but we have to try it..
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/file-explorer/
Oh boy
I wish it were trued, but it aint.
Second, what Stevie said.
presumption
im think we can use one trick ... srry im not a guy who can much develop
but the idea is maybee great?
if i can Open a file of the Folder of the pocket Explorer so maybee Folder Pocket Explorer\docs\Alice in wonderland.docx in word mobile 365 /15 opend it ... but the Office hub can't find the file if im opened...... but in the functionality it opend................ im think the "lock" isn't realy a lock....... im think it is something like a key in the Windows regestry of wp8 ...that disable the Show of other Folders... but every tool can be Access all the Folders that are on the phone...... if it was a real access lock it isn't be possible to open a docx file in word from a Folder outside it is registered in Office hub ... in the tool it is added the photo hub ...
im think a clever developer shouldbe can solve the Problem without to Bypass the "lock" of MS ... Note ... In Real Windows 8 it has security informations .... but if the locked for some users you can't see the files and you can't opend it.... but im think in wp 8 there isn't this the Problem ... the Problem is it disabled in the regestry to Show something that can be accsess all the Tools
No the developers can't bypass this, as far as I am aware. It isn't just the registry key (you may be right about that one), but the runtime itself does not allow these kind of things. I have been looking for way to break the file associations, and there seems to be none, other than jailbreaking and hacking into system settings.
Yep tested this one today on my new Lumia 520 and it even does not show the music folder -_- ... Stupid limitation from MS.
