thanks 4 the reply.
the site u linked is in duthc and i cannot understand some things.
looking around it seems android is still under development.
could you tell me something more?
tnx
No Other "fully functional" OS exists for the device.
just out of curiosity how long have you been using the device?
first month or so of using windows mobile is always tedious... but when you get used to it.. you wont want to go back (I got a nokia N95 and regretted it)

hi there.
i'm using the pda since 3 months.
by now i've quite stopped customizing it or "playing" with since i find win mobile set up quite messy.
i came from nokia smartphone series and found symbyan the best os for mobility ever.
fully customizable, fast, stable and above all build with "few clicks" philosopy.
with official win 6 rom, in order to reach a sub menu i have to dig into folders and tabs getting annoyed really fast.
start menu is almost not customizable, i cannot move links where i like, well they could have done a far better work insetad of that.
maybe changin rom passing to an unofficial one could give me some more satisfaction, but i'm not sure since the starting point is the same.
i hope i could explain myself at an understandable basic level ^^
sorry for my horrible english
bb.
Oh,now I get it. Phone people keep moaning about how Windows doesnt behave like symbian. Duuuh! Let go of your complete reliance on the d-pad(its a Symbian thing),you have a touch screen now,use it.

there are lots of things could have been projected better as iphone did, for example
WM6 in trouble ?
he, he, interesting post. I also spent a lot of time trying to simplify my phone interface. There are many great programs and tips on that forum. However, the first time I had an iPhone in my hands, I admitted its interface is 8 levels ahead of M$. Now, what we need is a fully customizable, fast and stable OS. Might be Android since HTC signed the partnership. Let's see. Anyway M$ got to react quickly otherwise they might be out of the game soon.

anyway, any hint to improve wm6?
i totally agree with you...
windows mobile is very complicated becuase it has all these extras that the average cell phone user will never even bother using....word, excel, ppt, etc. while business users thrive on these features.....
i am an average cell phone user but the only reason why i got the 8525 is because of the large qwerty keyboard so i can text a lot, but i wish the interface was as simple as a normal phone, maybe google android will fix this problem in the future =)
extra features do not make something complicated. complicated to you maybe. Very simple and easy in my opinion, besides, its near identical in operation and style to desktop windows, which everyone, even mac users are familiar with.
buying a hermes for just quick sms is like buying a a ferrari to get to the shops... should have bought a sidekick.
"because of the large qwerty keyboard so i can text a lot"
tests show that young fanatics could sms alot! faster then a good typist on a normal sized keyboard could type
they only one who could beat the young sms fanatics was freaky enthusiast old school telegraphs people
if a full keyboard was all the requirements then a nokia comunicator would prob be closer to fitting the need of a normal gsm user who just wanted a keyboard

Check out HTC home. you can add 8 programs to the quick launcher.
Or since you seem to be such a fan of the iPhone, why not install the iPhone interface for hermes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302739&highlight=iphone
or you can even look into the HTC touch interface.
I think thatif you look at thoes, they will help with your situaltion.
BTW, you should look in the TyTn/Kaiser forums for specific infomation to your phone. this one is for the older TyTn(8525).
Mate, go ahead and install Mobile 6! It is a lot better than the old WM5. Make sure you get a "cooked" version from this site, one with a built in HTC cube, HTC plugin etc. You will not fail to be impressed. Did I mention that you can use a 8 meg micro card for extra storage? Try doing that with an I-Phone!
try this UI from tomorrow

Doesnt the iphone have 16 gigs
He meant 8 gigs of sdhc ram and if you factor in that you can have as many as you can afford then your software and music and video options are very near limitless

hi, i searched up 'iphone' in this forums and found a lot of iphone themes. i think the Torx-Development one and iFonz from ssj5trunks are the best. can you tell me which one looks and acts more like the iphone?
do you have to launch a program to make the theme work or does it start automatically hen i start the phone?
can you change the backgrounds of the themes?
thanks

I would have to agree with you. The animation when the icons are pressed is near identical to the iPhone's.
My opinion? Don't try to emulate the iphone on your PPC.
I own both an Iphone and an HTC Trinity, and i can tell you no program can come close to the incredible interface of the iphone. First and FOremost, the screen size, not to mention the smoothness of the animations.
So - either you get an iphone (Like I did), or you live with the "uglier" PPC GUI, but get advantage of much more functionality.
Just my 2 cents
Honestly, I used to be obsessed with making my phone look like the iPhone because I was planning to get one, but 3 days before it came out I got an 8525 instead because the iPhone was missing to many features that was important to me. So then I was skinning it to look that way, then it just got boring. I would reeally really reccomend SPB Mobile Shell 2. I really think its the best thing around, because it sex's up the hell out of Windows Mobile and makes it totally finger friendly and smooth. Plus with all the advances people are making customizing it, its becoming even better.
But if you absolutely had to, use iFonz.
can you change the keyboard and EVERYthing in itask to look like the iphone? or can i use resco keybaord and othe third arty plugins?
my family has an iphone, but im using windows mobile because of the more features
it started out as a little project for myself, and myself only.
i feel like the iphone ui is very intuitive and simple with a visual style thats pleasing.. theres nothing wrong with trying to mimic an easy to use interface.. and its to hold me over until att gets its network straight, and a 3g iphone is released.
thank you.

****...the Sony Ericsson Xperia is going to blow the iphone away
...and AT&T is going to carry it. Cha Ching
Just wondered now Microsoft have revealed WP7 what are your thoughts? My opinion is that it looks like a step back. I love that WM6.5 is so versatile and customizable and the new offering looks like a step away from this and into consumer land.
Discuss
Not right away, except for testing. But there won't be any apps to get the level of useability we have now at release time.
I would totally upgrade! WP7 looks SOOOO nice... For me 6.5 isn't a modern OS... It's old and ugly... And the app development has stagnated... WP7 will be the new, fresh start we have been waiting for.. Please HTC, give us the upgrade!!!
I would flash it but a custom one, maybe HTC's to try it on, to see what all the fuzz is about.... anyway, if portability of applications is impossible from WM6.5 and below, It wouldn't beof much use to me (If I want music or videos only in my device, I could as well get another one that is dedicated to only doing that a.k.a. iphone). The good side about wm6.5 and below is the flixibility of the system (playing videos as well as office documents, etc.)... just my opinion.
I would definitely try it out atleast, trying it out and seeing what I'm gaining/losing and then deciding to be honest. It won't be for everyone that's for sure. I'm curious to see how Microsoft will support WM 6 after 7 launches?
I would install it for testing only. Gonna stick with 6.5 until 7 is more mature and has a bit more going for it. I like that it seems basic and clean but I'm hoping that they still keep the very in depth settings and leave room for the consumer to tweak it, instead of locking it down like the iPhone os.
I agree with you Lindsaydr. Too consumer / provider focused. I use my phone to call people, txt/chat/email, web browse and run apps (some media based). I don't want an OS that seems focused on providing me an online store to buy stuff.
Have it modular and allow me to disable all the consumer/provider modules and I'll be happy.
In it's current state, I wouldn't install it to use for over a week. I'd install it just to check it out though.
I hope it changes. Otherwise Apple, Android, Windows Phone 7 will all be pretty much the same with different UI. All consumer/provider based and trying to lock you into their little world. I think Android is a little less of that.
well it still seems like there's quite a few months for things to change in Windows Phone 7 but it does seem like a good fresh start for Windows Mobile. Would be awesome if you could dual boot 6.5 and 7 on the HD2 although i guess that would be close to impossible

that's a partially silly question
It's like keeping XP on a phenom because it's lighter than seven...
It's clearly quite a leap, so only a few will install it right away, there will be most probably compatibility problems with some applications, yet it will be the choice that "makes sense" to go for it, even if after a while, when more developers settle their applications to work in that environment.
I need WM7 in my HD2!

I know I am supposed to like it, but... bleh...the design sense is not the strongest feature of MS and it never has been. Sure, the guy who designed "metro" knows something about tennis shoes, but I don't like the new UI. It's trying too hard to be minimalist, modern and cool, but it looks like a major fail so far. YMMV.
:ducking the flames:
I was reading the "Microsoft hits redial in phone effort (Q&A)" on cnet. It sounds like 4 point multitouch instead of 2 is going to a requirement. Does the HD2 even have that in hardware? Its going to be officially no go without it.
Think i'll wait for sp1 myself.
*cough
not touching it, from what I've seen so far.
I'll stay with 6.5.5.
i loved wp7 series very smooth very fast very easy

I'm seriously trying to envision just how a 4 point multitouch system would work.
I am really not coming up with any viable scenario where FOUR fingers need to be used simultaneously to do something on my phone.
Seriously....What is that? A four-finger click will send an email to your mom asking her to bake cookies for you this weekend? Seriously. I am all in favor of improved function, but too many times with Microsoft we are forced to deal with what someone else tells us we are supposed to find intuitive and useful and very often, this is not the case.
I definitely would. I like the new UI, despite what other people may think. Although I would like for it to have Sense on it also.

+200. I used to like Nike shoes at some point, but in the last 10(?) years they've gotten too funky for me or I've gotten too old. Regardless of who made the UI, I don't like it either.
A parting shot here
A great forum, learned a lot, some very clever and helpful people here ( and some prima donnas)..but what I found out is while using a Windows device I was spending countless hours updating Roms, making stupid pointless cosmetic changes to my HD2 (usually resulting in making UI more ugly and messy - some theme designers here seem to have been on crack when creating themes - others very good), when in reality I was craving for a good selection of valuable everyday apps that are logical and simple to use.
Enter Android...Since buying a Motorola Milestone I am now using the phone only when I need - as opposed to constantly tampering, I have downloaded all apps I need, layout looks good off the shelf - a simple wallpaper change is enough, finger friendly, good hardware and away I go.
Looking back I don't understand why I got a WM device and really don't know why you guys are sticking to this dinosaur.
Over and out.
Isn't that fun?
Making slight changes to your phone WHEN you feel like it?
If that's what you're using the Android for, why not get an iPhone?
And btw, I like dinosaurs.
What is a phone supposed to be used for - to analyse the Hadron Collider?
Haha. that's funny.
But back on topic, you say what is a phone supposed to be used for? isn't it for communicating with others? via Phone calls, SMS, MMS, e-mail, social networking sites, forums on the internet, etc?
This phone does it all well, and excel in some areas like internet.
So, what.

It's called the HTC Bravo aka Desire and it too is coming to T-Mobile soon.
android is definitely better for a day to day phone. ive only had the hd2 2 days and ive already switched back to my nexus. the hd2 is a beutiful device but wm 6.5 is definitely its worst attribute.
1. you spent a lot of time updating the phone
2. you wasted your own time doing cosmetic changes
therefore
3. the HD2 is a dinosaur.
not a very cogent argument now is it.
I dont play with my phones layout, theme nor small cosmetic changes. I only update the rom from Duttys, so once every 3 weeks or so that takes 20 minutes of my time to do so.
Shoo, and go play with your motorola.

I have to agree about wasting time with WM 6.5 and with WPS 7 coming out, WM 6.5 is a dinosaur; but It's about self control.
I have a small dog, she's healthy because I don't over feed her, while I'm overweight because I can't control what I eat, but I don't wish to be her in order to be healthy, instead I try to better my self control.
So no, I prefer not to eliminate my ability to choose by getting other phone like iPhone. This is my first custom ROM and I hope to exercise my self control

I'm really happy with my WM 6.x device. I tweaked just few essential things and I use my phone when I need it.
Anyway, I'll test Android on my HD2 when someone will port it. That's all...
In reality, you can flash an Android device every day if you really wanted to.
In terms of our Sense/WM devices, if you go by 'official releases' or forget official, lets talk 'big jumps', you'd be flashing maybe roughly three to four times in a year. Once a quarter! (1.4x, 1.6x, 2.1x, Sense 2.5.20x)
It is our -own- choice to jump at every incremental update (OH BOY 23545 IS OUT, GOTTA GET THAT!!!) and we reap the benefits AND suffer the consequences of using this non-final code.
There are plenty of people still running 1.66, their next update? Whenever 2.10 comes out! (Or whenever their carrier decides to screw them with an interim update - think I saw a 1.72GER floating around )
So you tweaked a lot of stuff on your UI and that made you give up on it.
Ok.
My HD2 does not need intensive cosmetic tweaking to the UI. Spooky!
Maybe you're just obsessive compulsive...just saying.
Not one freeze in one month of heavy usage (meaning it runs stuff I half bake...I mean compile and execute on it) and some initial tweaks with Cookie's mod and control panel made it look peachy (btw you folks rock).
As for the process of jumping from premisses to a logic conclusion, even Android can't fix that. So good luck using it. Just don't go declaring something to be an extinct life form when all you have to go on with is: "I tweak and flash a lot". That is more telling of how much you are unable to appreciate and use something then of the intrinsic value and quality of the object you judge.
I'm actually interested in going to WM from Android.
Android doesn't support the things I want to do. Mainly video/audio codec support for most files.
got my Desire on pre order. I love the big screen of the HD2 but ive come to the conclusion that im something, of an app fan. I dont want to move back to an iPhone and Android is something I have experience with.
For me Android offers MORE potential for customization, and by customization I don't mean making the home screen look a bit different but real CORE app functionality. I'm a big texter and on Android I recall a number of SMS apps that one can REPLACE the built-in messaging client with - Chomp, SMS Popup, Handcent...to name a few. These apps offer the facility to quick reply from within any app via a popup window, and also to initiate a text message whilst in, say, Google Maps...and they all have a different look to them.
The only app I can think of that has any similarity to this on Windows Mobile is made by Vito, is ugly as sin, and offers very little other than a clunky looking popup.
This is just one facet of a number of other things I have found Windows Mobile to be deficient in since moving back to it from Android. Just simple things like Twitter clients and IM applications - even from the SAME companies - look, feel and work ten times better on Android.
The fact that the HTC Desire will be receiving support for 720p DivX and video recording sells it to me. I'm positive the younger OS will take advantage of the Snapdragon processor a lot better than WinMo, considering how much more stable the Hero was than our HD2s, despite its sluggish processor.
I'm going to be sad to leave the Windows Mobile world to a degree - I will also be sad that I have no chance of getting more than £300 for my pristine unlocked HD2 despite paying £499 only a few months ago, but fortunately my contract with T-mobile expires on the 5th of April.
The second hand price drop is a lot more severe than I've seen for most other devices and perhaps tells just how much faith people have in the devices future.

Agree 100%. Oh, and I am one of the plenty on 1.66
I have been doing quite some tweaking on my HD2 since I got it just before XMas. Most of the times I did it just for the pleasure of playing around with the thing rather with a real usability or aesthetics objective.
When I bought the HD2 knowing that I could "get my hands dirty" was one of the (secondary) point in my decision making.
Most of us people here like to play around with our devices. The problem is if we get carried away (like with many other things in life).
And when one gets carried away - often one of the most effective solutions is quitting altogether. No shame in that (on the contrary - I believe it's a very responsible decision!!).
Those who do not get carried away, let's keep in mind that we *could* - so let us not criticize those who quit.

lol.
"I tweaked my phone and now it's ugly, so I got a different one"
Troll++
Well I have tried Android numerous times, and personally, I hate it. It's so ugly that it looks like some china-low budget crap. In the HD2 with it's amazing Sense, I get all that I need for everyday use in a way that I prefer - and the Sense UI is stunning beautiful.
after selling my iphone, i've had this hd2 for 3 months. i customized it as much as possible. i thought i was getting the best phone in the world - i was dead wrong. the hd2 falls WAY short of my expectations. for one, the battery is horrible - lasts 1 day with some use. on the iphone, my batt lasted 2 days with lots of use.
another issue was scrolling, like scrolling through tons of albums. the albums would have to refresh as you scrolled - very slow. on the iphone, the ablums appeared as fast as you scroll. and the menu and typing was not as responsive as the iphone.
but what clinched it for me was the lack of important apps. for some unknown reason, theres no nyc subway map for the hd2 - thats unbelievable!! why is that?? on the iphone, theres literally DOZENS of them.
i know i'm comparing the hd2 to the iphone. but when youre justified in trashing a product, you got no choice but to compare it to something else.
i was thinking about installing android on it.. but android has a windows '95 look to it. the icons look so old and doesnt look as modern as other phone o/ses.
anyway, i'm highly disappointed in the hd2. the only good thing about it is the screen size, thats all. i'm finally selling it - good riddance.
my phone of choice now is the iphone 4... cant wait to get it and feel free again!!!

another issue was scrolling, like scrolling through tons of albums. the albums would have to refresh as you scrolled - very slow. on the iphone, the ablums appeared as fast as you scroll. and the menu and typing was not as responsive as the iphone.
but what clinched it for me was the lack of important apps. for some unknown reason, theres no nyc subway map for the hd2 - thats unbelievable!! why is that?? on the iphone, theres literally DOZENS of them.
i know i'm comparing the hd2 to the iphone. but when youre justified in trashing a product, you got no choice but to compare it to something else.
i was thinking about installing android on it.. but android has a windows '95 look to it. the icons look so old and doesnt look as modern as other phone o/ses.
anyway, i'm highly disappointed in the hd2. the only good thing about it is the screen size, thats all.

Your frustrations are the result of your ignorance, not the phone.
Obviously you are unware that Android has literally hundreds of themes that change the way the icons look. You can also add/change widgets and pretty much anything about your UI. You can also tweak settings to get better battery life. You have no clue how to operate Android, I'd suggest you learn before dismissing it.
As far as WM6.5 is concerned, it is an outdated OS with a lack of apps. It has some awesome features, but apps is not one of them. Android will have MORE apps all around than iOS in about 2 months at the current rate and already has more free apps.
You also dismiss WP7, which has growing development and will give you that modern UI you are looking for, if you think Android's icons are anachronistic you should abhor iOS icons, check out Metro UI, you'll love it.
If you are too lazy to learn how to fully utilize this amazing machine, then I suggest you sell your HD2 and go get an iPhone.

the only troll here is you, for inciting such activity. and your immature behavior proves it.
alright, i'm going to give my hd2 one more chance.. i'll install android.. but on 2 conditions:
1) that i install an android o/s that has excellent batt life and thats fast.
2) that i install a skin for it that looks like stock 6.5.
if any SERIOUS (note the quotes) members here want to recommend any versions based on these conditions, i will install it.

Just for grins, I looked up subway software for WM, found this in a few seconds:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-tag-subway.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-visitor-guide-subway-new-york-weekend-2-06a.html
And those are freeware. I'm not sure you looked in the right places.
EDIT: There were also some WP7 titles, but I was looking at WM.
As to scrolling through titles, yes the Iphone will be better there, it is a consumer phone not a pocket PC.

To be quite honest, he did not even call you a name . He said you were ignorant. Thats a verb not a noun. Either way, I agree with him wholeheartedly.
This phone is not like any other (not any I know of in this exact replica), it comes with Windows Mobile, but yet you can put almost anything you want on it OTHER than Windows Mobile. Know ANY phone that can do that? No Android phone will run Windows Mobile (not that I think anyone would want to - just saying).
Not to re-state what orange had stated but, you can try Android for FREE. You can try Ubuntu ON YOUR PHONE, for FREE. You can TRY Windows Phone 7, for FREE. Dont have to 'upgrade' (pay 100's) just to TRY the NEW Windows OS...makes sense to me .
Can you do that with the iPhone? No, impossible. You can get a jailbreak that will do what exactly? Get you some apps and wallpapers that you cant do/get normally. How fun.
Not putting down the iphone at all, just stating the FACTS.
Someone once said, ohhh android has all junk apps. For 1, you have to look. For 2, more are free than paid. For 3, iOs you have to pay for what, 75% of what you want to use? Android you can purchase plenty too, and get great apps, but some really nice ones for free where on ios you have to pay...nice
Please do try Android before you dismiss the wonderful phone. Windows Mobile I will agree, was absolutely junk on this phone, I honestly changed (back in the android-sd days where we were booting android from WINDOWS on our SD card. - how awesome) as soon as I could. Never went back. Now, its an Android phone, TRY IT OUT.
---------
As for the best android? Well, TBH, its different for everyone. Its a WHOLE NEW GAME. Just look at the android section under the HD2 here. Its LOADED with various ROMS, which is WHY ITS AWESOME! You have so many options its crazy. Windows Mobile, you had almost none (various themes, about it). You can almost never brick this phone. READ READ READ ALL the Noob guides, they will point you in the right direction. Flashing an updated radio, bootloader, then rom. Once you figure it out, anytime you want to 'try' something new, it takes all of 10 min., 5 to download the ROM, 5 min for it to install. Thats it.
My bad for long post. Just trying to push ya back over the fence. Its not a bad phone by any means, its a piece of [excellent] hardware (very good for multitasking). Try some new software.
Your right the hd2 is crap. I have a iPhone 3g 8gb in great condition. Jail broken with old fully flashable firmware. Trade ya for your hd2.

I think thats the end of that argument because I doubt he can come back from facts.
I have no idea how a iphone kid can come here and bash the HD2. Then again I actually wont go into any of that since you guys already nailed it right on the head.
Love this phone and even though I am still on winmo I am still in love with it.....down the road I'll go droid HD2.

Your a TIT!
Please PM me and ill give you my home address, You can come round and I'll say worse directly to your face
If you haven't got the intelligence to realise you are ignorant and are missing out on an amazing device I pitty you very much.
It's not the phone's fault. It's yours for trading your blessed iPhone for that sucky HD2. I mean really? You traded a holy iPhone for some piece for garbage? Man, that's the stupidest thing I've ever read.
I mean like dude, don't you know the iPhone is the absolutely best phone you can get? Whatever the version may be. I mean the 1st gen iPhone blows the galaxy s 2 any day.
Anyways enough with my trolling. xD
It is your fault really, you should recognize your needs and desires first. Judging from your personality, attitude, experiences and desires, the iPhone is obviously your device. You don't want to customize, you don't want to hack, so obviously you want a device just to use. So in other words, why the hell did you get a device that wasn't meant for you? Next time, think about what you want before you get it.
From what I've read it's an excellent phone if you're willing to go through the motions and change it. I'm not sure what you have done with it but I'm sure if you had the time you could change it to how you want it.
However, the beauty of the iPhone ( and it's biggest problem) is that it's so controlled that you can have a perfectly consistent experience and it takes little effort (though I would argue the same with WP7, though it has fewer apps).
However if you really do not want it I'm curious as to what kind of HD2 you have and how much you are willing to sell it for.
WOW!!! you are going to sell out ur hd2!!! ... i cant believe it ..i have made up my mind to never sell it (it will like go into the world phone museum cuz this is the device is the starting point of all these new ones) this is the best phone i have ever used cuz it is higly customizable (except for on winmo) ..i am currently on android (NAND) as far as u r searching for a nice rom i would suggest hyperdroid cm7 ...its a pitty that u want to sell ur hd2!!
EDIT:: n what u saying huge battery drain... i just loose 5% in 7 hours of standby and my phone lasts full 1.5 days with heavy usage
Also, if you have problems with the battery life you can get a larger battery ( they do exist and you can get them for reasonable prices on eBay and the like), so you do have options available.
I would suggest to save you the potential of regret to at least try other options like Android ( on which there are a number of excellent launchers that can suit your needs well) and WP7 ( which I personally think has an exquisite UI) on your phone.
