Is there any way on the hero to store a GPS location in the address book? I know if you have an address it will look it up for you but what if you don't have a street address, just a GPS location?
thanks,
That would be handy as the address lookup is very poor, even with a full address in the contact.

Background to my problem
At our office, we have Small Bus Server 2003 with the new Exchange SP installed. Our web site domain name is not mapped to our local server, but hosted on a external commercial one.
Our router/firewall has one fixed IP address that is connected to the web, while all the workstations have local address like 192.168.10.xxx, etc.. To configure Activesnc to work from outside our network, all I had to do is enter the fixed IP address into the server settings in Active sync and it connects.
The problem occurs if the Wizard is connected to a PC via USB in the network. At this point, active sync is looking for an external IP address instead of the real address of the server which is 192.168.10.xxx.
So, I configured a custom DNS with our domain hosting provider to have "mail.domain.name" redirected to our fixed IP address. With a little tweaking on the router, this works! In ActiveSync I can enter just "mail.domain.name" instead of the external IP and it works from the outside.
Now, to sync while connected to the network, I have to manually change the server address every time to reflect 192.168.10.100. Ideally, i would like to somehow tell my local server that any request inernally sent to "mail.domain.name" gets redirected to 192.168.10.100 instead of going out on the web. This would solve my problem of changing the server address everytime I'm in the office.
Does anyone know how to do this in Small Business Server 2003? Is there another way to keep the same server settings in/out of our network?
Thanks
Rob
How could I get the IP address to my G1? thats the Ip my phone uses for internet not the ip when its connect via wifi
You have a couple options. Using Terminal Emulator you can use the netstat command or you can use the easy way and go to www.ip-address.com. What do you need your uip address for anyway? You can't remote in through edge or 3g like you can wifi though telnetd.
thanks...................

now i dont know the name of the app which was released last week in the market, but it uses dynamic dns and updates your G1's IP address automaticly to a domain name.

You're referring to DynDNS and you can also find it in some routers. Unfortunatly, I believe there is a service charge for it. I use no-ip instead because it works just as well. But as far as I know DynDNS is the only app that offers this. But again... why do you need it??? I noticed that when I go to whatismyipaddress.com and when I do Netstat in Terminal Emulator I get two different ip addresses. I don't know what's up with that but I'm thinking that the netstat is the ACTUAL ip address and the ip address shown on the web site is a proxy. I would imagine that T-Mobile would not be stupid enough to leave their subscribers phones open to everyone else. It's very simple to get someone elses ip address if you're a host of a web server since all ip addresses are logged and without security (such as a proxy) it could leave all users vunerable. So my conclusion... if you had your real ip address... what do you plan on doing with it? You can only access your G1 through WiFi as far as I know. But correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi everyone!
You know everyone's worrying about privacy these days and I was just thinking about the "my location" service on our mobiles.
Does anyone know for sure how it works? As far as I know it seems to take the Cell ID and get the name and weather through an Internet connection. Is that right?
Which database is it connecting to? I know for sure that the place I live at isn't on accuweather, where the weather on Sense is usually taken from and the weather displayed under "my location" is different from the weather for the nearest place that's on accuweather.
Moreover is it possible to find out which data exactly is sent to that database (which seems to be something "Google" because you have to accept some terms initially)?
The phone masts send out a cellID which is passed to google and it triangulates you based on your nearest towers.
Rmour has it google has a huge database of tower names and locations, so once it has a location it can pull up a post code and pass that to accuweather to get back the weather for that area.
It seems that google dont have a complete list of cell id's, and some towers dont transmit their cellid, hence some areas giving my location problems.
google also uses the info for traffic updates and traffic congestion calculations
Is there a way to disable the my location?, i sort of found it in the tweaks thread but i dont understand how to do it.

Just go to settings/location and you can disable it there.
you can do it in regstry.... current user/software/htc/manila.... enablecurrentlocation set to 0 (zero)
The database is by Google. It is supposed to be anonymous, as long as you don't turn Latitude on in Google maps. You can even store history of your location, but that is turned of by default, and can be controlled via web interface of your Google account.
Also note that your service provider can detect your location independently. In some countries this location can, or even must, be archived for some time.
Furthermore if you have Wifi enabled My Location will sniff for wireless packets and depending on the APs MAC addresses will be able to detemine a more accurate location as the Street View vans sniffed packets and uploaded MAC adresses along with GPS co-ordinates to aid their service.
since we're onto wifi sniffing etc for location finding, heres an off topic but interesting proof of concept page that can pin your home pc down to a pretty narrow area just from your home ip address, and which works using googles location service.
Its not nearly as acurate as the real location service, but still got my house to within 500 yards, using my virginmedia ip address.

Note test page is for firefox, but the exploit if done for real would work on all browsers.
Okay so the other day I had my note 2 stolen and now I need to find out where it is. The girl told me she had it and she made sure she turned it off so I couldn't track it. She told this to my face. I never saw her again and now I want to know of a way to track it's location from the moment it gets on the internet?
I tried Google Account activity but does that log the ip address of your phone as soon as it goes online but doesn't necessarily access gmail?
I have my Hotmail account on there as well anyway to get account activity of ip addresses that access hotmail?
What about going online with the Android device and get an ip activity log?
This was stolen on the 5th roughly and she is leaving the united states on the 10th. SO THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET IT DONE ASAP!
I already have the police working on it as well. I'll need to have the police check the cameras at the property to see what car she left in so we can find it logically that way or by tracking via ip address. Calling the ISP with Law Enforcement and getting the physical address to the ip address.
THANKS
Try downloading cerebus from the play store on the web. Although without activating it as a device admin, idk how successful you will be using it

can anybody tell me that how can I change my IP address of my choice on windows or android so that I can use my cable net server anywhere anytime...plz. plz help
Sent from my A100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
What exactly do you want to do? I believe what you're looking for is a DNS Server.
i want to make my IP address digits of my own choice
Sent from my A100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I think it is impossible because we cannot control IP addresses alocation.
Try to use something like DynDNS or no-ip instead.
The internet works because you are prevented from doing that. Your carrier owns its ip block and assigns an address to you.

It is surely impossible
It's a little bit tough to answer you directly without more info as to what you are trying to achieve.
If you are talking about assigning a static IP address to your phone, on the mobile networks this is not possible AFAIK.
If you are talking about assigning a static IP address to your home WAN, you can talk to your ISP about doing this (they usually charge for it).
Another alternative as someone mentioned is to use a Dynamic IP DNS service, such as No-IP.com
Can you be more specific about your exact goals?
Impossible, as far as I know, you can just ask for IP reassignment which wil give you a new IP adress. Not of your choice however.
As someone said above, you're probably looking for DNS. You can't really change your IP address, but you can alter the last two digits of your IPv4/6. Is this what you're referring to?
You can assign any ip addresses only in private network.
If you have local net, you can assign ip addresses by:
Manually
DNS server zone
DHCP
In the internet you can't assign ip addresses.
