Safe to Root Sprint Hero if a phone number change is pending? - Hero CDMA General

Just got my Hero, however it was assigned a temporary phone number ... My contract with T-mobile is over and I want to port that number over.
Can my old number be ported to my HTC Hero if it is rooted? Should I wait till I port my number to my Hero prior to rooting?
I don't think it should matter but I don't know nothing about this stuff. Just thought I should ask the experts

Rooting wont interfere with that. Go right ahead.

Sweet, I've been anxious to get dirty with this baby. Thanks.

Will pay if you can update my g1!!!

Ok guys as title suggests I am litterally done with this phone now and am ready to throw it out of a window! The only thing stopping me is because it is so new and the fact that I absolutely love it apart from not being able to get official 1.5 update on to it.
I have tried everything!
All I want is the 1.5 (not modded/rooted) firmware with widgets etc. I have tried downgrading but that doesn't work, I have tried upgrading but that doesn't work and over the air hasn't come over the past 3 days it has been turned on (although I suspect this is due to being on Orange although I did buy a T-Mobile sim and it didn't update in a day with that inside either).
If you can help I WILL PAY!!!
My phones information:
Firmware: 1.1
Baseband: 62.33.20.08U_1.22.12.29
Kernel: 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #6

Seriously man.. I have to be honest. If you can read directions and follow them, there should be nothing that you cant do on the g1 yourslef. There are numerous threads that give you Dummie proof step by step instructions.
So is your phone stock firmware?? Because if that is the case then you should recieve an OTA update for cupcake.
What exactly is the problem you're running into? The whole process may seem overwhelming at first, but it's really cut and dry. it is as simple as replaceing files on the sd card, updating a couple times and running some verbatim commands. You shouldnt be having that many problems.

Seriously buddy I have been building PC's since I was 13 and have been modding/flashing and programming my HTC Hermes for the past 2 years and yet this is impossible! It would appear I was unlucky enough to get the one firmware/build that is almost impossible to flash (look it up if you don't believe me, google for "123099" and choose the xda link).
Yes it is the stock rom that came with the phone but I haven't had an update in 3 days??? Is this because I am using an Orange sim card? I have purchased a T-Mobile sim should I put this in and leave it for x amount of days hoping?

You either get it OTA, or you root it. Unless you can find the official update.zip.
Once you root it, flash a European JF build, which is as close to the stock build as you're going to get.

I want it to be legit so no option to root (yet). How long am I supposed to wait for OTA updates? I thought 3 days would be sufficient?

I apologize if you feel that i questioned your ability. It is just very often people are quick to "ask how to do this/that" I did a small search on the build number and it does appear there are people discussing the issue.
I was just trying to provide words of encouragment if it was something that just "seemed" overwhelming.. but it seems you have a background.. Best of luck man
You won't get the ota update unless you're on the original tmobile sim the phone was shipped with.. otherwise how would tmobile know to push it to you? Orange certainly aren't going to do it. This has precisely bugger all to do with your build number and everything to do with using a different sim. If you want to pay me for this information, ill happily receive it.

There's basically no disadvantage to rooting, but try to get hold of the proper SIM to OTA then, or find someone who has that update.zip...

I am sorry, but this is completely wrong. You don't need the original sim. You can even receive updates via wlan or on other networks. Anyway , I would suggest to root. It's nothing criminal.
I sent you a pm on how to do it, read the one that says "this explains better on how to install the 1.5 update" or something like that
Hope it helps!

I can confirm this as I have been using my sim since my nokia 6600 when T-mobile used to sell good Nokia phone here in the US.

Yea I dont quite know what I was on about there.. I was tired and irritable when I posted that and I can't remember what I meant.. There may have been some basis of a point in there about using payg sims and the always-on internet on the g1.. I was assuming it wouldnt work properly.
In the cold light of day, I don't know what I was ranting about. Let's put it down to me being an idiot.
On a more constructive note.. A goldcard should be able to downgrade any g1:

Quick question

ok so i know i'm feeling a little lazy right now and didn't search for very long but my normal google and xda searches didn't answer so i'm asking.
i plan on getting another phone tomorrow and the t-mobile store i shop at is out of the original mt3g, but they have the one with the 3.5mm jack, has anyone here had any experience with that one? is the rooting process the same as with the original my touch? i know i can call my rep and he'll pick me up any phone of my choosing from another t-mo store if i ask him(he owes me for saving his arse more than once with the android customers) so i would like to get an answer before he has to go to work tomorrow so i can just have him pick one up for me on his way in if there is some weird hardware issue or software issue/fix that causes rooting to be harder
Since you answer me i will answer you!!
The 1.2 mytouch is supposedly unrootable even by gold card method. I have been searching for days and have come across threads where ppl bricked trying to root.
that sucks, i really wanna tweak the phone, i know that pdanet can allow me to tether withourbeing rooted, as well as allowing you to read and send your sms from the computer when the phone is plugged in. i may have to call my t-mo rep and have him pick me up a 1st edition mt3g just so i can tweak it. i've dealt with non-rooted G1's and rooted G1's and rooted is so much easier to work with though it may have been because the non-rooted phones i have used were all running android 1.0 and most of my useful apps are only compatible with later versions of android

Root sprint hero? Bought it and it came with 2.1 installed -,-

So yeah, I bought my hero yesterday and the guys at the sprint store spent around 30mins with it(I guess they were giving it the update, but they never asked me if I wanted it)
so the question is, how do I go about rooting it now? all the tuts I've seen are for 1.5

meh I feel like fighting sprint over it since they didn't even tell me what they did, but asking for a phone swap over an update sounds like a douche costumer
I've seen people asking for an exchange over less than that. Here is a good one, a customer who just upgraded his phone came back and demanded an exchange because the box had a weird mark on the button of it that was smaller than a grain of rice and it did not affect his phone or the functions of the phone at all.
I miss the days when all we had was basic calling phones
But yeah I'm new to the hero (coming from the t-mo G1) 2.1 is much more smooth along with the sense UI. and here I am wondering when(if) we are getting 2.2 or root access on 2.1 in order to get a 2.2 rom.
waiting on the devs , root access would be great(wifi tether!)

Woot! Got 1.5 back after new 2.1 ruu

So i Just got my replacement HTC Hero from Sprint. IT HAS 1.5 !!!!
So here is what you need to do if you want to have 1.5 back:
1) cal sprint tech support and complin about the phone not working right, It gets to hot while making calls or using it at all * this one is important *, the battery only last 2 1\2 to 3 hours after full charge, data never connect correctly and you have to refresh it by going into and then out of airplane mode, and what ever else you can think of or are really having a problem with.
2) tell them your phone worked fine until the new 2.1 update released on sprint's website May 19th 2010, and you followed every instruction they gave
3) DEMAND !! ( I'm not usually like this, but it was the only way they would do it ) Demand a new htc hero be sent to you, and tell them to request in the notes that it has 1.5
**** IMPORTANT *****
The replacement phone comes from asurion, your insurance provider. They are currently working on flashing all HEROs with 2.1, so if you want 1.5, DO THIS TODAY !!!!
4) once you get the new one, make sure you reflash the 2.1 RUU on the old phone as to wipe everything and remove traces of customization * as they look for these and can charge you $75* Then call sprint and activate the replacement.
5) **** MOST IMPORTANT STEP ******
MAKE SURE YOU MAIL THIS BACK WITHIN 15 DAYS, as sprint will charge you a $500 NON REFUNDABLE Charge to your account !!!!!
Also once you get the new phone you can update the firmware to the
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test Firmware, as it has a built in ROOT ACCESS. just follow steps at: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/9542-how-repair-your-bootloader-after-using-2-1-ruu.html to get root access.
That's it I hope this helps !
Now I am going to enjoy custom ROMs again !
Moved your post to a new thread under general as it was not relevant to DamageControl rom development.

Actually u just got lucky. Asurion does not know what theyre shipping wether its new, used and what software it runs.
woot woot i was still in the 30 days from purchasing phone so i went to the store and got a new phone with 1.5 on it since i pushed 2.1 before i researched rooting, now lets see if I can get this one rooted, any really easy ways?
thats what i did as well, use fresh kitchen took me all of about 30 seconds to root.... then i went and updated the recovery to 1.5.6 and installed damagecontrols 2.08.1 rom and so far i like it, its like having a stock 2.1 rom but with root access and a tad bit more features.

I need help.. and FAST! Number Change

Hey! I need to get to the sprint store within the next 2 HOURS! My mom is coming down to get take my S4 and we're swapping numbers and I'm taking her Iphone 5s, we're on the same sprint plan, they do it for free, and quick!
Problem is... my phone is rooted and I have the latest version of the Sacs custom ROM, but is this a problem?
Would it cause problems in the number switching to the S4 if my phone is rooted and on the newest versions of Sacs? Does my phone need to be completely reset to 4.3 stock (Since I updated to MK2 firmware).
I need to know quick quick quick, thanks!
No. Just run the data rest or activation

Late but for future reference it should not matter at all. You probably could have done it over the phone too instead of going in. The switch is on their end, not on your phone. If you think about it it would be pretty ridiculous to put that setting on the phone side, I would have all of my exes calls coming to me instead... Muhahahaha
