Have a look over at http://www.pocketinformant.com/Forums/index.php?showtopic=8904&st=0 for the latest (Release Candidate) of Pocket Informant.
Its well worth installing as it has a much smaller memory footprint (see the discusion in the forum above), and seems a lot faster to me. Also if you can find any bugs, make sure you post them into the forum.... I found one yesturday, and its been fixed already.
The guys at Web IS seem to have done a great job (and no, I'm not linked to them in any way.... its just that their product makes the PDA calendar features usable!!!)

Oh !£@[email protected]!&&! Installed this and now my right soft-key won't bring up the internal (default) contact program (which is so much better than the one in pocketinformant). Anyone know how to change it back? I managed it before but no amount of registry changing seems to work now
I'm not an expert on this, but one suggestion I would make is that you tap on the PI icon on the bottom of the screen (the red dot surrounded by a multicolour ring) and de-select "Make Default PIM" ... this then makes all the MSFT links work with the MSFT apps rather than PI... hope this helps

This is one of the beefs I (and several others) have with PI, and AF for that matter, which seem to fall on deaf ears in their cosy cartel. Why won't they let the user choose which modules they want to use, instead of their software taking over the whole machine?
If you installed a non-MS planner on your Desktop PC, you wouldn't stand for it replacing all your other PIM apps too. So why should you on the PocketPC?
There is a page in the wiki that shows the registry settings for the soft keys, but I found this method unreliable. I managed to change the text but the app remained at the default setting.
The way I did it was to download Buzz's SoftKeyAppletEx, which goes into your control panel [you do need to register to download the file].
Code:
Description:
This is a replacement applet for the SoftKeyApplet.cpl. I called it SoftKeyAppletEx.cpl (to be original) ;)
This applet does exactly the same thing, but with more features
1. you can browse your ppc to get the desired application or link dedicated to the soft key.
2. you can change the name shown on the soft key.
3. you can place the applet icon on the settings tab you want (personal, system, connections).
4. you can specify only one soft key (left or right) or both
5. you can reset to defaults, so I think it's the phone and the calendar
That's really useful stuff - thanks!
As others have said, I want to use PI for my Diary but the built-in contacts application - which is far better for quick dialling etc.
I still have a problem though - PI seems to have replaced my /Windows/poutlook.lnk file with its own, so if I make the right soft-button point to this file it still runs PI. Can anyone send me their default contacts.lnk file (and possibly poutlook.exe too?) or tell me how to make a new link to the default contacts application (which I assume must still be in ROM?)
Thanks all. Love PI but this hijacking on my contacts is really annoying!

I tried this and I can report some success. I use PocketBreeze on the Today screen which is tightly linked to PI. Nothing I say here is relevant if you don't use PocketBreeze.
Now, with PI the non-default PIM, my PocketBreeze links take me to PI's calendar, tasks and contacts applications. My hardware contacts button and the contacts soft key in the phone now take me to Pocket Outlook's contacts app.
Couple of caveats: PI does seem to revert to being the default PIM after a soft reset. Also, the 'special days' feature in PB (lists upcoming birthdays and anniversaries) seems to grow duplicate entries over time, but these can be cleared with a soft reset. It's never worked properly for me anyway so could be unrelated.
I have yet to see any problems syncing. I do expect it to work OK as I believe that PO and PI run off the same database.
Hope this helps those with PB and PI.

I agree. Rev 4 was often very slooowww, although I had installed it in RAM. But this new version is different. The footprint is much smaller in WM5.
But although I have installed the new version entirely on the storage card, it is MUCH FASTER now!
I found some other improvements too, like the timeline now shows you total hours for your different projects, and there is a real fullscreen option now.
Didn't find any bugs so far, but I just downloaded it two days ago.
Cheers and thanks to this great forum! I have benefitted a lot already from the tips and tricks posted here

Is there a desktop program that creates Pocket PC shortcuts? Just enter what you want it to point to, and the icon for it, and it spits out the file?
By "just enter what you want it to point to" do you mean you type in the full path?
I have written a utility that creates the lnks for the full path, although no icons are created: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2102312&postcount=117
That's pretty much perfect! But does anyone know how to incorperate a .ico?
Whatever icon the program has will be included when the shortcut is placed onto the device...
I see... so there's no way to include an icon in just a shortcut, huh? Interesting
There probably is I just haven't worked it out!
I have worked out how to do it now: http://oldsap.blogspot.com/2006/07/customising-icons-on-your-ppc-shortcut.html
Problem is, it needs the icon to be stored in a dll...
Huh... fair technique, I suppose, although having a third file aside from the program and shortcut can make things hard to manage when file numbers grow to the double digits. Thanks for looking around... good find!
l3v5y.. thank you very much. the app is very useful.

Shortcut Creator crashes under Windows Mobile 6 Standard
Just to let you know - I was able to install this application on my phone (Verizon SMT5800 smartphone, running Windows Mobile 6 Standard (i.e., no touch screen). However, when I ran the application, it crashed immediately, and locked the phone up so that I had to take the battery out in order to reboot the phone and regain control.
there is an OLD WinCE program called 'Launch Pad' that does this, but will it run on a smartphone? I guess you could try and see. check this link:
http://www.onhiatus.com/Software/
this requires 'Pocket C' runtime here:
http://www.orbworks.com/wince/index_20.html
Firstly, I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this request, if not, please move this to another section.
I use the standard WM Task program a lot. I keep track of what I want to buy, eg. my weekly groceries as well as things to do. I know I can use ThumbCal to do this but they are all 'date' related.
All I want is just a simple Task program which works like the standard Windows Mobile version but the standard one is not finger friendly. I hate using the stylus when I am pushing my shopping cart.
I do not hv experience in PPC programming, can anyone help to develop something like this? I am sure it will be useful for others who is in the same situation like I do.
The characteristic of the program works similarly like iContact. It has kenetic scroll, can easily add a new task, a huge button to press on when it is completed (light-greyish wording when done). The screen is just a simple example of what I have in mind.
Thanks.
Have you tried any of these??

BTW gogle is your friend. I did a quick search and came up with TONS of related freeware that does this already.
Wow... thanks! Honestly, I tried googling before but I can't find anything. Will check out what you've suggested.
Look thru quickly, only the first one is finger friendly but the rest needed stylus-access. Will test out then.

Very good.
Okay, I've got a request:
I need a little program, which is the same like BluePower which switches BT on when connecting to AC but a little bit more extended.
So, 2 things are very needed:
1. A popup which asks if BT should really switched on (YES/NO; Standard: YES)
2. This prog should recognize if a BT-device is connected so BT should stay on when loosing AC-Power
That's for now

photo uploader
hi, i'm looking for a program to upload, pictures/photo's/video to my own website. like, you make a picture and then you can select to upload it to your own specified website. maybe also the posebillety with gps position and some comments. don't know if it's possible.
pls think about it!

hey i m looking for photoeditor for elfin can u made it
Really cool would be, to have an small app like g-profile, which for example turns on wi-fi on an fixed placed at an fixed time.
for example i come home, it recognizes this gsm singnal, and wi-fi turns on.
or i get to work, its not yet my breakt and it turns the volume to just vibra. than my break starts and volume turns up.
gprofile can do such thing but just with one reason, gsm OR time, i would need both
i want if you fancy making a simple but functional hard key program swapper so i can change the hardkeys setting easily to other programs.
thanks for the offer wish I could do this.
I wouldlike to log calls in contact notes like agendasfusion.
callcalendaris close but buggyand logsonly incalendar.
a weather app like weatherpanel where wallpaperis live radar
a calculator app with running tape, and a transparent keyboard
looks like youre gonna be busy!
i was thinkin recently of working with someone to make some palm pre-like apps
the fluidity of the apps on that device ive seen in preview vids and the wonderful use of the small screen real estate (no top and bottom bars, minimal buttons), is something that is almost necessary on screens like my htc touch (same screen size as the palm pre)
so, i would provide all the graphics for these apps, just need a developer
i think so far pocketcm contacts has contacts/sms covered.. very smooth scrolling, with a skin i can acheive the same simplicity and great use of fullscreen view on a small screen as i whippd up in this photoshop mockup:
i think what winmo needs is a good email interceptor app.. there are none that are skinnable to the extent of pocketcm contacts or as fluid, and then an image viewer (see palm pre screenshots of that app here -simple but very useful-:http://www.engadget.com/photos/palm-pre-official-ui-shots-1/1290333/ you can find videos all over) and a similar calendar app
most needed is the email app
if you could develop trust me.. you would have an insane following of obedient users
weve been looking for one for a long time, but its never come thru
if you make it, ill provide graphics!
think about it

What about a application, an actual good and working application that lets you create group distribution lists for email groups in your contacts similar to how the blackberry allows you to do it from their contact list and be able to use the group listing whether creating a new email or forwarding an email. I am shocked that this issue hasn't been addressed sooner.

Complete lack of integration between calendar + contacts and email + contacts is very disheartening!
My problem is that I do a lot of presentations, and all the presentation pointer/remote apps out there cannot meet my needs in terms of simplicity. All of them require me to run a server app on my PC.
I have used one in Palm that emulates a bluetooth HID keyboard/mouse, meaning it can do anything that your mouse or keyboard can do. The app requires to have virtual keys for Ctrl, Alt, Del, Function keys.

Papi Jump
Hi!
My idea is to make a game, similar to Papi Jump (a great game for iPhone) - you can see the game on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQxltToeNXo . It's an arcade game - you control a jumping ball with tilting your device.
It would be great if could make this game work for Windows Mobile.
Since we're all tossing stuff into the "wishing well", I can add something too
An application that would scroll RSS feeds on Home screen in Manila.
Of course, such an app isn't hard to make, the RSS Hub saves its channels into simple files - the problem is how to incorporate it into Home screen.
Well, I got an idea for that as well! Recently a small program called Personalizer showed up that enables us to change the network provider name into anything we want - that would be the perfect place for RSS scroller to show up! And since there already exists a way to modify this data, I suppose it would be possible to use Personalizer as backdoor for the feeds to show up in that text filed!
Even if they wouldn't actually "scroll", I think they could be made to change every 4-5 seconds.

Or how about a Config-Editor for FingerPoint? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499734 ) - so there's no more need to edit the XML Config File manually?
How about an application that reminds you to drink water and tracks how much water you have drank per day. As everyone should know, the average male should drink 3 to 5 liters of water everyday and ladies should drink 2 to 4 liters.
How about a litle app that:
1-Reminds you to drink
2-Allows you to input how much water you have drank (when reminded or manually)
In the long run, you could monitor how much water you consume on a monthly, qaurterly ,biannually and yearly basis.
Hi! I just checked out HD2's Remote Desktop client and it works perfectly on my Win7 box. Actually, it's the best mobile remote desktop client I've ever used!
There is only one minor flaw; is there no landscape mode, or am I just not seeing the option?
Give Gyrator a try. You can set which apps to allow auto-rotate or not.

Thanks for the tip. Although I Google'd a little and read that it doesn't work very well with the HD2.
Shouldn't this be as simple as a small registry tweak? I'm sure there is a value somewhere in the registry that makes Remote Desktop Mobile start in landscape mode.

I'm not certain why you are "sure there is a value somewhere in the registry that makes Remote Desktop [...]" because I know there IS NO such reg-value to make your app start in one orientation or another .
However, there is a registry entry to make it respond to orientation changes as perceived by the G-Sensor, then you can simply turn your device to sideways to switch your program between portrait/landscape/etc...
The easiest way is to use G-Config. The full manual procedure is to make new entries for your program as follows:
1. Navigate to reg key: "HKCU\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\Module"
2. Create a new string reg-value with name of program, and its path for the value.
3. Navigate to reg key: "HKCU\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\WhiteList"
4. Create a new string reg-value with the name of program, and its class name for the value.
5. RESET your device (turn off then on).
Hope this helps,
Cheers...

My dear friend, there are SO many apps that do automatic orientation: the most versatile, easiest, and customizable is Change Screen. Get it off of the diamond/raphael forums. Otherwise look for:
Zensor2 (easier), Gsens(lighest), or gyrator (heaviest).

What is its class name? I see its a different value for each program. When I want to add a new app, is there anyway I can find out for myself what its class name is?
Hi
download app "Change Screen 2.78".
once you install it set default rottation as portrait.it is important cos you don't want any other apps to rottate.(if you do want others, just set the exeptions)
Then go to exeptions and and create new with name "wpctsc" and set it only for landscape.now every time you start Remote Desktop it will be opened only in landscape mode.i use this app since i had my old Touch Pro and now i am using it on LEO and it always 100% worked for me.tried more of them but this one is far the best.
adding some pictures for you to help with settings.
hope that this will help you a bit.
Well, if anybody still needs it...
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\ModuleName]
"Remote Desktop Mobile"="\\Windows\\wpctsc.exe"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\WhiteList]
"Remote Desktop Mobile"="TSSHELLWND"
how do i find out class names for other programs?
Until we get another solution like Gyrator's neat stylus-out/stylus-in, you can check on the net or use a task manager. I personally use Dotfred's task manager, which shows window classes opened by a program (Applications tab/long tap on applications/Details button/Windows tab).
Now you need to find the right one (Usually the one with the window title, but not necessarily), and type it away.
Real quick example attached.
