Anyone swapping his Touch HD for HTC hero?

Just wondering? I'm playing with the thought of selling my Touch HD. Getting a bit tired of Windows Mobile. Anyone else?
But I'm asking myself, if I can live with the smaller screen and lower resolution?

Im thinking of doing the exact same and my main concerns are screen size and lack of radio. The radio, which i don't use that often, i can overcome by using web radio. But the screen size and resolution is making me consider it carefully.
I've only been using windows mobile for about 6 months but im getting bored. I've looked at all the apps i use and theirs alternatives available on android for all of them.
Has anyone here swapped WinMo for Android?

I did. I have used winmob for 9 years :S Seriously.
I moved to Android Hero on release day last week.
I sent the Android back on Monday and am back on winmob.
There are (currently) apps and 'things' that Android cannot do to the same quality as winmob. I don't for a minute think that situation will be like that forever, but, atm, Satnav is not as good on Android. Syncing is not as good on Android. I missed the hardware keyboard (not a prob for an ex-touch HD user of course )

I have TomTom on my touch hd but i think i've used it once so satnav software shouldn't be an issue. You mention syncing, what do you mean?

HTC Sync is not the best.. well.. its crap.
I sync with Googlemail though, always have and then I have an app on my computer which syncs with Outlook and Googlemail, so don't need to plug the phone in, I have no issues!
CoPilot is a good piece of kit, IF you have bought it. The pirate versions have many many flaws in it, so I presume this is what you mean by that? Obviously TomTom has been around a bit longer so had many years to get its quirks out of its system, I remember it on Symbian and my old XDA II, it was pants then, but nice now.
Just moved from many years on WinMo to Android and I'll give it that, its different. There are some things it won't do as good as a WinMo device, but other things it will excel on. But lets face it, its different, its not WinMo, its not Apple, hence why I want it, something different.
Not everyone will want it, but I've had a Touch HD and moved to a TP2 (0.2" screen difference) then moved to this and its fine, screen size is spot on for me, no complaints at all.

I bought Copilot on Friday night and tested it on a purely vanilla Android config. Nothing else installed. It crashed each time I exited. It also did not have my second tested postcode in it. Thankfully the refund function on Android marketplace worked very well, otherwise that would have been another £25.99 wasted.
More serious was the crashing though. Just kept locking up when I exited the app.
I too run Outlook sync>googlemail on my PC. But, for contracts this is a convoluted process of exporting to a .csv > gmail. It's a kludge and not good. The calendar via gmail syncs well but not the contacts. Pretty basic stuff and should be resolved at first hit and capable locally.
Under Vista, HTC sync hardly works, it's pointless being there. All these issues are exactly why apple is sewing up the market. Their stuff is much more user friendly. I have never had an iphone and probably never will, but fundamental issues that affect the user experience such as the ability to sync are essential for the success of a phone. As I was used to Activesync in Winmob land and that worked seamlessly, why would anyone struggle with an equivalent that doesn't work?
Hero displays a great insight to the future of open phone OSs. It's really exciting to experience. When the flaws are resolved I will be back on board for sure

My main problem is the size of the on-screen keyboard. I've been using palm-held devices to write for years now, so the keys on the Hero are just too damned small. If an Android handset came out with a display the same size as the HD, I would be very tempted. If there's an application on the Market that lets you actually edit Word-type files...

I did - but I still have the WM device but am not using. I am bored of WM for now. I will continue to use android as its a fresh and exciting to try something new and a great change, which ill get even better when I start customising the device more.

I presume you include your Pocket PC experience with that as WM has only be out six

ive been using windows since the original SPV. I've pretty much had every device ever released from HTC. Just sold my HD and got the Hero - I dont think I will be going back to windows again - unless something spectacular happens in Windows 7!

Yep, PPC as well as. I am pwoppa old school (just old really!)
I always had a soft spot for the SP5. I still have one of those and it gets use when I am on a night out, ie, more portable but still carrying the details I need.

Thats the way I feel winwiz, so do other people I know fortunate enough to have the G1.
I have been using a PDA since Apple's newton days and progressed to my first PocketPC in 2000 (Compaq) and on to my first WM device which was the SPV M600 (HTC Prophet) which is still in use now. The Trinity was next SPV M700 (also still in use) and then last year I got a Hong Kong version of the Diamond.
During my time with these devices the experience has nearly been the same thanks to the user interface. The Hero and android is a welcome change, although there are things I will miss with WM - I look forward to the further developments of the Android OS and the missing things with WM will soon appear in one form or another.

That is for sure. These are exciting times.

They need a direct sync for Outlook Contacts, call me crazy but I don't trust Google with my contact data and personally I don't like anyone else sharing my contact information with them or anyone else. Once you give them that data for free it's theirs, I'm not looking for complete anonymity but sharing my contact information is just a step away from giving them my checkbook, tax information and SSN. They have a really cool service and it's "free"... too bad people aren't taking account of what they are actually paying.

I am looking very seriously at getting a Hero though, I've had the Star Trek for quite a few years... (got it running WM6.1 now) and while cool. I'm looking forward to messing with Andriod and seeing what happens with the development of Andriod Apps/Utils in the community.

i had the touch hd and tytn 2 and they are all top notch phones....for me tho winmo phones are very precise in getting whatver you want done fast and efficeintly but they lack and excitement or fun while using them. hero i feel has just about put the two together making it enjoyable but efficient. dnt think i could go back to winmo and be happy about it....... the difference in screen size for me isnt really an issue i get on fine with smaller and th ehtc hero offers 3 different keyboard layouts for those who are used to a hard keyboard. obviously personal opinion differs but mines thumbs up to android......give it a go.....you only live once!

I was using 4 HTC WM smartphones over the past years. i got bored after a month with my htc diamond so i sold it and buyed a nokia e71 (symbian). Used it till now. In a few days my HTC Hero will be delivered.
I am certain that Android and HTC fit together very good and its getting the only competitive platform beside the iphone os.

Ok, screen size is my main apprehension. If that works out, maybe I'm going to get a hero.

I have a Touch HD and have been considering a switch to Hero. The main thing that stops me is that I rely on a couple of Java apps that run under Winmo but wont run on Hero. For the rest, I think the trade offs are probably worth it.

Rip HD. Sort of.
Just got my Hero(HD's going to the wife) and like any other device out there at the moment(and probably forever, sadly) it is not perfect. Having said that, I don't think I'll miss my HD that much.

That's exactly what i've done. Sold my hd and now waiting for my hero to arrive - hopefully tomorrow. Then il report back to say If I think it was worth it.
I much prefer the look of android tho.

I'm in the same boat as you guys - thinking about trading my HD in for a Hero. As soon as I saw how good Android was, I had been desperately hoping someone would port Android to the HD, but that as it doesn't look like that will happen now, I think I might take the plunge for a Hero.
Of course, like all of you, my main concerns are with the screen, and also the on screen keyboard. I'm using FingeKeyboard 2.1 on WM and it's fantastic, I doubt HTCs keyboard on the Hero will come close.
That said, I'm bored of winmo, and I organise everything online through google anyway, so switching to Android seems to make sense. I also like the idea of an app store, and whilst MS is slowly working on that, I'd rather have something run by google instead of MS.
Guess I should take the plunge!

Why Should I buy HD2?

I am planning to buy HTC HD2. But I am confused why i should buy it rather than an iphone. What are the benefits? As even we are not sure whether HTC would provide upgrade to Windows mobile 7 for this device.
I have been using HTC tytnII for last 2 years so I am familiar with windows OS. only issue is these OS are not upgradable. Like apple keep on issue OS upgrade for iphone users.
Isn't it bit problematic to have such a big screen without stylus?
From where can i get cheapest HD2 in UK?
Please guide me in right direction.

If there is nothing you would miss on iPhone, then I would not hesitate.
I would miss many things though.

Get the HD2 & have the support of XDA at the same time! If you read the threads in this Leo section, then it's a no brainer! Good luck.

It's less problematic than a smaller screen without a stylus (such as the iPhone).

Replacing HD with HD2?
I would like to hear from the experience of Previous HD(1) owners who had migrated to HD2. Is it really worth it? is it a major or a minor step ahead?
I'm asking that because currently I have no issue with my HD (WM 6.1), it is a very responsive PDA which serves most of my needs (phone, mail, messaging, web, video, slingplayer,fring, etc.)

I have both and have been trying to decide the same thing for the last few days. My test was to use the HD2 for 24h, and then go back to the HD1.
I listed my HD1 on eBay this morning... #1 deciding factor? Capacitive. Closely followed by speed.

I totally agree. The screen itself is worth upgrading from the HD to the HD2! The speed is a welcome improvement, and the whole UI just seems a lot more rounded than previous versions.
I know a fair few people moan about HTC, and a lot of those moans are valid, but in my opinion they've really improved on the HD, as if that was almost a test for the HD2 which is the real thing.
Not knocking the HD - don't get me wrong. I loved that phone, but it's going in the post today, after selling it on eBay the other day.
I can't see myself wanting to upgrade this phone for a looooooooooooong time!

Reports vary from Q1 2010 to Q4 2010. The only consistency so far is 2010, so I wouldn't hold your breath for it.

Hehe, we are in the same shoes Next Monday I'm going to get a HD2, distributed in Vietnam. Although there are some problems being complained everywhere, but it's no doubt one of the hottest device this quarter. Let try and experience!

i've got a hd1, and thinking of upgrading to hd2
but my hd1 on uk orange is rubbish, and is a total pain.
i've discovered that orange has tweeked the rom so much it's not good.
so my question is, does UK Vodafone alter the rom, and is it supported by HTC unlike the orange hd?

I kind of have a similar question. I'm kind of on the brink of switching to the HD2 from my magic 32b. Basically the hardware specs make the HD2 a beast. I like android and have rooted my phone and am pretty much getting all I can out of it. I'm wondering if it's worth the switch to WinMo? I could really careless either way on the OS. I'm not really a fanboy of one or the other. If I do buy an HD2 I will load a custom ROM. What are the advantages of this? (I know there are many for Android Devices.) I just want to make an informed decision.

i'm replacing my old E90 communicator with an HD2 and boy it looks promising. There is the emminent audio sync issue though when playing back videos.

I made the switch from the E90 also (with a brief X1 stint in between) so if you have any comparison niggles, pm me.

I will get the HD2 when it come out from T-mobile this month or next month.

I'm still on board for the HD2. And as the previous poster mentioned, I'm not in love with WP7S anyway. I didn't want to upgrade after what I saw at MWC.

I am not with T-Mo but if the price is right I will be for a no contract stint with the HD2. If the price is 100 - 200 short of the Telstra version I will probably keep ATT and import it.
I like WM7, but dont care about it as its not here and I need a nice new phone.

It's supposed to be $450/no-contract, $200/contract from US T-Mobile. If that good enough?

Do you need a T-mobile service to purchase the phone? Will you be able to unlock the HD2 from T-mobile?

I definitely still will. It's a great phone and at $200 subsidized it's an even better phone.

its just about the most bland UI, one can ever see

I think that they must give us 6.5.3/5 version, because it will be perfect choice for HD2. Excellent hardware + new finger friendly OS = bingo. Best performance and autonomy for us users, and then we dont need any WM 7 or similar toys...

Yep and a updated Sense with some new features, so we can wear our phones with pride. So if anybody comes along with a WP phone we can say ... yeah alright, but we have a phone with 5 buttons that is powered by HTC Sense. And then we show them our battery covers .... and wish them a nice day.

I totally agree with the others in this thread. I just bought the HD2 knowing that there will not be a WM7 upgrade, at least not official. There will most likely take a while before we see any interesting apps for WM7 anyway, and by that time (maybe in a couple of years from now), its time to switch phone. For the moment I'm very happy with WM 6.5.x, especially the amount of available software that runs perfectly. The multimedia, communication and web experience of the HD2 are excellent, thanks to outstanding hardware and good value added software like Sense 2.5 and the Opera browser. I guess that the 1st generation of WM7 (OS and devices) will have some bugs and glitches, and I don't plan to be a beta tester for Microsoft.

Please learn me how to find these good applications and games. I have been on the HD2 since December and have not found so many. Bejeweled 2 and Teeter are the only 2 games of good quality. The Marketplace is dead, so really tell me where all those apps and games are!

Yes , but when WP7 arrives the 6.5 will be dead? Will Developers be kind enough to create apps for 6.5? Most of them will create for 7 ... Thats a shame for me..

you say this because you are trying to forget that your new arrival hd2 will not get the upgrade not because you don't like wp7 series (welcome to hd2 forum)

im still getting it as well. those who think win7 wont be on the HD2 havent been around xda very long

i should have waited, to trade my nexus one for a us version =( i got a uk version coming in the mail.

Well, search these forums for Xtrakt and Experiment13. Then Google for the demo of Electopia. Then search this and the HD2 applications forum for the word "game" or "games" and you'll find plenty.

I really want a new phone. And hd2 seems to be a great one! I just have a few conserns.
Today I have the TyTN II. Yeah, with the non-existing video drivers. Ive been doing some research and it seems to me like the LEO have some similar problems. I dont want to fall into that trap again, spending money on a phone that doesnt work the way its supposed to.
Also, Windows Phone 7 is around the corner. Is LEO worth delaying a potential wp7 phone, or should i wait to wp7 is out?
Please someone, help me out here. I really dont know what to do.

hey there... relax!!! hd2 is a great phone, if you like windows mobile in general... the lack of drivers won't make it slow... having said that, there are some drivers available at the moment, but the cpu is fast enough you won't notice any serious slowness even without using them... wp7 is a different scenario... more or less a different system, with only a few similarities with current windows mobile... it's your call to decide whether you want to wait for wp7, which will take about a year until we get a decent phone... and allways you can be a bit cheeky and see what others report about wp7, after they got it, and then decide if it suits you!!

If you gonna wait for WM7 you'll wait for 1 year exactly. Phones with WM7 will be out in the end of the year...with about 50 apliccation and games...
I will pass on WM7 in autumn...2011...because than will be at least 5000 apps

Think of the leo's snapdragon cpu as an humvee, it can go past almost anything without stopping Unlike Tytn II, you won't notice the lack of graphic drivers on this one.

Htc has stated this week that they would make a WP7S handset by the end of the year. You gotta consider that wp7s is a totally new and different OS (not just the ui but kernel too) and some cons about it have already began surfacing on the net (no multitasking, no copy/paste, closed system apps management ecc). There is no single and simple answer to your question. It's really up you whether to keep using a stable, open and customizable system such as win 6.5.x or jump on the wp7s bandwagon and accept therefore its limitations. One thing's for sure though: by the time Wp7s hits the market, htc will have released devices way more powerful than the HD2..

It's really hard to give an advice.
I bought the HD2, now sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm very disappointed.
So there is no clear Yes or No.
My first phone from HTC was the OrbitI. With this phone I was happy
from the first day I got it. Since 2 ½ years the Orbit works great without
any problem.
Now I have to spend really much time to get the HD2 working correct.
If I had known this before, I would have waited 1 year.

I know you can get lots of cool apps, and android is better than winmobile but if I install android on my htc touch hd my camera will not work and im not on contract so ill have to pay for internet usage. Even though I don’t use my camera much will there be a fix for this anytime soon? Also can you give me a link about which android to use e.g. ecliar or frosty?

Do you believe in GOD?
You're free to feel the same about possibility of working camera on android.
Nobody knows and only few developers care. We could only wait.
Concerning "ecliar" and "frosty" you'll find all the info hier.

I Agree on the camera but what the ... I was able to run android on my HD so I`m happy as a kid with a popsicle!
I can only advise you to just go out and try it, if you don`t like it, switch back to WM, get yourself a hamer, smash your phone, smash your money box and buy a android phone

It's not like you have to get rid of winmo when trying Android. Just restart your phone and you're back on untouched Windows Mobile.

The latest cab is by far the easiest way to try out androud on your htc touch hd, however if you can then goto the latest kernel downloads and "update" using the methods described you will get better stability and longer(slighty) battery life.
With any kind of situation where good people are investing their time and are in general outside of the official htc tech box, then issues will and do arise. If you wait some time then issues are sorted, and other problems crop up. This is how it is for now, but things are much better now thanks to all the efforts from the devs on this site(and others) and are making android for hd a real possibility.
My experience is that with the newer kernels and certain power saving techniques andoid is usable for a very busy person working an 8-10 hour day. It was a very hard slog for a newbie to load up new kernels etc, but they do make a diffrence and settle stability issues and quirky behaviour.
Remember, the touch hd is no rocket ship and making some of the graphic games/apps in a playable manner is a small miracle from the devs. Some inevitably wont work, but thats just the way it is. There are options for overclocking your hd and again it is up to the owner to do(or not) this and face up to the risks this may have on your device.
In short, no praise is high enough for the often free time and effort devs and forum helpers give to get and keep this project going.

Yes and No!
After seeing WP7 in use and trying android on my HD I have decided that there only is one real choice and that is Android on my next phone!
If you want to check out android without the commitment of buying a new phone then trying it on your HD is a great way. BUT it was not designed for our phones so yea no camera and bad battery etc are part of the package. If you like it then smash your piggy bank and buy a android phone! some good deals can had if you dont mind a used phone or dont need an unlocked phone.

When you have 'free' internet access, android is a MUST, I'll never go back to winmo
when I really need the camera I just restart my phone into winmo, take a picture/movie and then boot android
Without internet (3g internet) I don't know if it's worth it though...

I agree! I was amazed by the google navigator app but this is useless without internet. As a matter of fact, this is allready useless when you pass the border of your country as internet fees rise sky high when outside your country!

As for a day to day using experience and with the need to trust that your phone doesn't shut down all of a sudden, its not worth the risk of using XDAndroid on your Blackstone yet.
As a "let try this and see what the heck it is!!" IT IS DEFINITELY WORTH IT.
Oh I hope the android devs aren't leaving Blackstone behind and just fucus on Leo... I would have to buy a Leo just for that reason then

Just got home from giving my HD7 back - faulty device and a reasonably long list of unforgiveable omissions from MS which has meant my final residual warmth for MS has been expunged. Android 2.3 sounds like the business, and the Nexus S looks like the one to run it on, when it's out (shame the galaxy S doesn't have a flash - odd oversight!).
Until then, i guess i'll either
1. live with the latest feature-rich but hardware-overloading energy ROM, or
2. flash down to some combination of speed and features which works on the HD, or
3. dual boot to android, try to iron out the kins and live without a camera.
Vive the linux!

no offense to Energy but KWBR's ROMs are far ahead for a daily use.
