Possible to unbrick using serial adapter? - G1 General

Hi,
I have a phone which won't enter any of the boot modes (ie. recovery, boot loader etc, just hanging on the splash screen) and I'm wondering if it is possible to use the serial interface (as per below link) to make some headway on getting it back to a bootable state, or if I will have to wait for further progress on the JTAG interface.
how to access serial interface on G1
http://www.instructables.com/id/Android_G1_Serial_Cable/
to summarize: in the state my phone is in, will this serial port be active or is that handled by the system once it's booted
thanks

Nobody's been able to get a response from a brick this way afaik. By all means try it if you're bored, just don't get your hopes up.

[Q] Tattoo Bricked

Hello,
I tried to update the radio and the SPL version on my Tattoo. Everything went fine until I had to reboot my phone. It shut down alright, but it never powered on again.
These are the following problems I am having with my Tattoo at the moment:
Cannot power on phone.
Cannot boot into recovery mode.
Cannot boot into FastBoot.
When I connect it to my computer via USB, nothing happens.
The only thing that it's responding to is when I connect my it to my charger.
Does anyone have a solution or is my phone dead forever?
Thanks ahead!
bump? anyone?
Send it back to HTC. If anyone can do anything about it they can. There's nothing else you can do. Sorry
boo.. that sucks..
Well, thanks anyway
Ehm, I don't want to post a New Thread so I'm gonna ask here:
Does anyone have the pinout for the Tattoo?
Take a look at this. I guess they fix such things (but you never know if they just are after your money. http://www.ort-jtag.com/index.php
Yeah I saw that already. Also, there is a file name Tattoo Jtag on their website in the Support section. However, to access that section you have to enter your products serial number (which is I'm guessing the phone's serial number). I have tried several serial numbers (including mine) and all of them were 'invalid' so I never checked the files out.
Also, they only have one thing in the shop which is a kit and it costs $330 so no thanks
I have a similar problem, I would like to share my knowledge although I must be completely out of way.
My experience is based on the BeagleBoard and Angstrom so I really don't know the HTC HW and Android at all...
- The device boots from an xloader that instructs the device how to proceed with the boot
- the bootloader takes place (great u-boot in the beagleboard ?? in the HTC phone) the bootloader allows for ROM or kernel+rootfs flashing and much more
- now the kernel is loaded.....
User mode applications do not allow to have access to the memory area where xloader and u-boot lie so they should be safe all the time to allow for device reflashing.
So we should have access to the device via bootloader anytime if we knew how... maybe somebody can help us further.

Same here...Exact same issue...No Recovery mode...No USB Connectivity, Screen turns on but is blank, alhough I did see Tattoo popping up initially but not any more...All I can see is the LCD back light turns on...Battery does charge...Also when I try to enter Recovery mode screen keeps blinking as if it is trying to restart again and again...Someone help
similar problem here, but i get absolutely no response from the phone, it doesn't even recognize the charger. do i just throw it away and buy a decent one or is there a solution?
Sparky the only way for now to fix that click is to bring it to some service point that have that ort jtag, because only way to fix that is to writte new boot sector on phone . Im sure that i know at least 2 services that have ort jtag in Novi Sad . Look for marvel *Miroslav in Ns, or send me private message
same thing happened to me
just this morning, and in desperation I tried hard to remove the batt cover (prob pressed some of buttons, I felt a jerk and ho it was back in amon ra`s recovery, nect time I just removed the battery waited for 30 secs, then press off&home and hold it till recovery came back) but for good half hour NO REACTIONS , ABSOLUTE BRICK, nothing when I put the usb in PC or in socket, dead screen, no sounds and no reaction to ANY combination of keypress. I guess you could call me lucky (in last few days I flashed at least 3 versions of froyo roms, this afternoon I bought =8GB class4 Kingston, formated it in PC FAT32 default size, copied EVE. from my 2gig rom then just turned it down (yes I am brave) and put the 8gig in tattoo, it works like a charm (finger crossed it will continue)
So is there an available Jtag for the Tattoo yet?
I'm in the same situation. No recovery no fast boot, Damm!
I`ve update psfreedom with psgroove_hermes_v4 zip file then my tattoo reboot and now I only get the Tatto title screen but nothing happends.
Somebody have clue to give back life my phone.
Thanks!
if you can get to the title screen, that means you can connect it to your pc via USB and recover from a backup (I hope you made one)
Hello, I connect my tattoo to my pc, but usb connection is not available yet.

[Q] HELP! just bricked my nexus4

I was working on my another android device and use "dd if=boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3" command to update its boot partition. However, I wasn't aware that I just plugged in my rooted nexus4 to charge it! Consequently the partition(mmcblk0p3) on nexus4 is overwritten and it could never boot to fastboot mode again. The partition is supposed to be "sbl2" for nexus4. (it means secondary boot loader, I guess).
I notice that there is another partition sbl2b(/dev/block/mmcblk0p13), which seems to be backup for sbl2. Does anyone know how I can restore the backup to sbl2??? Or I should just send it for repair. :crying:
If you can't get to fastboot, you're boned (I presume it's not booting up at all?). Out of interest, do you get QCOM_USB_DLOAD show up in device manager when you plug it in to your PC?
Don't suppose your other device is an Optimus 2X by any chance?

Yes it's not booting up at all. all I can see while holding the power key is red LED light.
I saw QHSUSB_DLOAD in device manager.
Bad luck, the other device is not Optimus 2X.
It might not be fully dead then, it is possible to use the Qualcomm download mode on other phones.
Have a look at this for the One S, I guess it could apply, if so you just need a dump of mmcblk0p3.

I stuck on step 3 of the second part in that thread. I held the power key for 10 seconds until the (QDL mode) disappear. However, I did not see any new /dev/sd* nodes. And it came back to (QDL mode) after 2 or 3 seconds. Do you have any idea how I can get the device nodes to appear?
Greatly thanks for your help.
I have no idea, I'm afraid. As far as I know, you're the first person to get into QCOM download mode on the N4.

Hi, Tsilva80...
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this has all the hallmarks of a corrupted or erased bootloader, in which case your Nexus 7 is probably irretrievably hardbricked.
The lack of the 'white-on-black' Google logo on boot; the lack of the 'white-on-black' battery charging animation when plugged into a wall socket... and the APX entry on Windows device manager, are all symptomatic of a dead, corrupted or erased bootloader.
And without a working bootloader, not only will the device not boot, but you can't even run fastboot commands in order to fastboot flash a Google factory stock image. The bootloader is critical; without it, nothing happens. It's the 'Achilles Heel' of the Nexus 7.
---
APX mode is the default state the Nexus 7 enters into in the absence of a working bootloader, with the expectation that somebody with the necessary technical skills and equipped with an nvFlash tool, will nvFlash a replacement bootloader.
Unfortunately, there is no universal nvFlash tool available for the Nexus 7.
Unless you have, at some point, previously generated unique device dependent 'wheelie blobs' using the flatline procedure (See here and here for more details on this) your only option, is to have the devices motherboard replaced.
Even with the 'wheelie blobs', I haven't read anywhere of anybody successfully using them to revive a hardbricked Nexus 7.
---
Your only glimmer of hope, is that you may have inadvertantly ('deliberately') entered APX mode, by mistake... by pressing VOL-UP (holding) + POWER ON when the device was powered down.
If this is the case, then you **might** be able to break out of APX mode by LONG PRESSING the POWER BUTTON for 15-20 seconds... But this will only work if there is a working bootloader for the device to boot into. If it's erased or somehow corrupted, the Nexus 7 is hardbricked.
See this post, for a list of Nexus 7 button combinations, and more details about entering and exiting APX mode.
---
I really hope you can get your Nexus 7 working again, but based on your post, I can't say I'm optimistic. I suspect you will need a new motherboard.
For what's it's worth... Good Luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Essential soft brick, any way to unlock flash from fastboot to sideload OTA?

Hello I am posting in Q&A because I'm a new XDA user, I was not allowed to post in the dev channel.
I have an Essential phone that has been working great for the past few years, no issues, and it was running standard build receiving OTA updates, until the very last update, which soft bricked the phone.
The phone was never enabled in developer mode while in Android, and now, I can't boot the phone into android at all. The only thing I can do is get into fastboot.
Fastboot state shows DEVICE STATE - locked
Any commands I try to unlock flashing, or change slots, anything at all, I get the error that the device is locked so all commands to unlock fail.
Is there any way to unlock device state from fastboot? I saw a youtube video showing a way to use a chopped USB cable to enter emergency / EDL mode for Qualcomm-based Android devices, but have not seen anyone post that this was successful with the Essential
Does anyone know of any method to be able to unlock flashing from fastboot? Or any other method to un-brick an essential? I've attempted everything, on both Mac and PC, nothing works.
On mac or PC, I can query the device in fastboot and get a response, I just can't do anything to unlock anything!!
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Same problem
Same thing happened to me. Same day as you. I can get fastboot but not adb but since the device is locked I can't flash. I've only had the phone about 6 months so I contacted customer support and they offered to replace the phone.
It might be a known issue because they didn't even try to address the fact that I could get fastboot connected but not adb. They just offered to replace.
Thanks for the info! I am -at least in this case- unfortunately an early adopter. I bought two essentials at the beginning of the pre-release.
Essential support checked my serial number and said the phone was out of warranty.
Has anyone been able to force the Essential into EDL mode to recover that way? It looks like you have to latch one of the USB pins to ground, or 5V, but I haven't found any detailed instructions on how to make this work on the essential...
Thanks again
Justin
I'm sure things have changed and I'm wrong, but if you can get into the fastboot menu can't you just cycle through the options until you get to recovery and then flash an official release from Essential?
I may be thinking of LG or something but this should be possible as long as it's newer than the current software installed because it will see it as an official update and allow the flash.
Thanks but unfortunately, when I try and do that, the phone just does the same thing, it hangs forever on the initial boot screen white Android text with the circle/square logo...
That's why I've been looking into the more direct hardware version of forcing the phone into EDL mode, which is supposed to be possible with all Qualcomm based phones.
I've just not found the time yet to find a USB-C cable I'd be happy to cut in half and short the pins on! Which is why I was hoping someone might have tried this with an essential before to know if it was successful before I start trashing good cables
Thanks again for your reply!

I have the exact same problem,
My phone is stuck on Essential log when I turned it on,
I can access Bootloader normally but the device is locked so I cannot flash it,
Recovery is corrupted, when I try to star it, it shows only the the Essential log and freeze so I can not format or wipe or sideload.
OEM Locked and unchecked
USB Debugging is unchecked
and I can't flash anything,
Did you managed to unlock it through Fastboot command or any other way ?
I wish I can just login to the recovery or unlock it so I can flash it clean,
Kindly help me if you found a way out
Thank you

Issues with Recovery Mode, Bootlooping, Flashing, EDL, and ADB Commands

Not sure how to title this forum post, but this is the best I got. Forgive my ignorance and lack of knowledge on these topics.
I was trying to root my Axon 7 mini. After some searching to find out how to unlock the bootloader (like needing JDK, older Android SDK version to run android.bat, etc.), I finally got it to work. Ran Recovery to "apply update from SD Card" (can not remember the file right now) and was then ready to load TWRP Recovery. When I rebooted to the recovery TWRP image, it told me something failed and the phone had to be factory reset. I took my SD card out in fear of my data being deleted and "accidentally" clicked the power button. It then reloaded with a password prompt where I typed some random password (1234 because I never set a pin password nor knew what to do here), clicked submit, and then gave me some error; now my phone doesn't work.
The Problem:
- I can enter bootloader, sometimes, but can only run fastboot commands; adb device does not detect phone so can't run adb commands (always says the server is old or something and reloads daemon successfully but never finds my device regardless). Also, I don't think I can get it to run in EDL mode; MiFlash gives out errors too when trying to flash recovery images.
- Recovery mode doesn't appear or work; not sure if the MiFavor command prompts on the phone is recovery or not, but it's safe to say this no longer appears. This is also where I believe the phone bootloops. I can get the fastboot commands to flash a TWRP recovery, but it never actually enters the TWRP dashboard.
- Can not turn off the phone... I think. None of the command options that appear on-phone shut it off; however, when the screen does stay black, I'm not sure if it's in EDL mode or plainly off.
- Device Manager shows the phone as different stuff (namely Kedacom USB Device and Portable Devices/MTB USB Device). Sometimes Qualcomm appears, but it depends. More often than not, when my device does appear, there's either an error code (like Code 10, Code 43) and/or the device is grayed out.
Conclusion:
I just want to get my phone to work normally again, if possible. Currently, I locked the oem to see if fastboot commands could still work and now I'm stuck at the ZTE logo, so can't try to unlock it right now. What are the proper tools, drivers, programs, etc I need to get this phone back to normal? I've scoured the web and these forums for 2 days now with no luck and lots of either missing info or obscure info.
I bought this at Best Buy, so I'm assuming it's US Axon7 Mini version in terms of drivers (not sure if the box specifies any info that could be useful here).
Un-brick Axon 7 Mini
Dear all,
I experienced the same issue with my phone after I tried to flash it with custom ROMs and recovery.
I thought I lost it as I was not able to enter adb mode (not recognized on the PC) or even not able to enter EDL mode with the button combination so not able to do anything with it.
Only watch it boot and display the ZTE logo.
After some research, here is what I had to do to get it recovered.
First thing you need to get is an EDL cable.
I let you search on your favorite site. Mine was a Generic eDL Deep Flash Qualcomm 9008 Cable 2 in 1 for Z3 X/Octopus.
Until you receive it, make sure you have the latest Qualcomm drivers installed on your PC.
You can find it easily.
Then, connect your phone and your PC with the EDL cable.
Press the button on your EDL cable (there should be one) for a few seconds and keep it pressed.
Then, press the power button and keep it pressed for at least 20 seconds.
At this stage, you should have both buttons pressed and after some time, you should feel the phone rebooting.
After 20 seconds, release the power button.
Then, after 10 other seconds, release the EDL cable button.
At this stage, your phone screen should stay black and your phone should appear in the device manager as Qualcomm USBHUB (or somehting similar)
You are in EDL mode and should be able to perform a recovery flashing using tuliptool.
Then I followed the steps I found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7-mini/how-to/updating-uk-version-zte-axon-7-mini-to-t3717933
If you are still stuck, pm me.
Be patient, all will be fine,

I had a feeling an EDL cable was my only option left given everything I've looked up and the multiple methods I've tried. Wanted to avoid spending money on one but doesn't look like I have a choice given the circumstances - oh well. Regardless, thank you for the response and advice. Have to wait a while, though, to get the cable and test to see if this works.
If anyone else ever ends up in the same royally screwed situation as me, getting an EDL cable - or DIY one if you wanna be cheap and are confident enough to do so - is probably your saving grace.
