GPS nightmare, cant find any satellites, can anyone help? - Touch HD General

Hope someone can help,
My internal GPS has never worked on my blackstone and I want to get it fixed. I have searched here and google and tried all suggestions to no avail.
Google maps, GPSed or HTC GPS tool never find any satellites. They seem to find the GPS device ok but not any satellites. I have tried "clear memory" and "cold start through" HTC GPS tool and it just scrolls though some weird looking commands and never picks anything up. I have left it 20 mins and still nothing.
I have tried soft reset, hard reset, disabling A-GPS, updating QuickGPS thousands of time and disabling windows auto management but nothing seems to work and its driving me crazy.
Im nearly convinced that it must be a hardware issue, is there anything else I can try before I contact HTC.
I have used latest HTC stock ROM but im currently on Duttys brand new WM6.5_Sense_2.1_Holy_Grail_R0.
Cheers

I have to ask but you are outside when you're trying to get a signal aren't you?
If so then I would probably agree that it's hardware. When I first got my HD it got a lock in about 2-3 minutes while outside.

Yep, I can confirm that I was outside at all times. Its so strange. Would people suggest I flash it back to a stock ROM and phone HTC??
What can I expect from HTC's customer service?
Thanks

If your going to return it under warranty it would be advisable to return it to stock rom unless you want to void warranty
HTC should replace device for you or fix device you've got and return it

Don't know if you want to give GPSToggle a shot. It is a Today screen app that turns on the GPS chip for you and displays its progress with green bars when it locks onto satellites. Four green bars mean 3D satnav is capable.
You can find GPSToggle as ARM download in this post:

[Q]GPS dead after hard reset. Whats wrong?

I have now walked around freezing my ass of in 20 minutes. I'm using tom tom 7 and have also tried google maps. Before hard reset everything worked just fine, it had full reception after 20 sec.
What can have gone wrong?
Maby you forgot using quickGPS?
Nope, used it several times
You have to hard reset one more time. I had the same.

Already did it a second time. Don't know what more to do.
I've had this happen on my Touch Pro and my Kaiser. It takes an obscene amount of time after a hard reset to get a gps signal. Try just leaving it on for a couple of hrs. If it never comes up then u have something serious to worry about
Ok, but you can't catch signal of gps or software can't see any gps hardware?

Well, Tom tom tells me that it has found the hardware. Then it starts to search and I can see in the gps info that it hasn't even found one satellite.
I have contacted the support my mail. If they can't help me the phone goes back to the store.

Here's what I did when I had your problem, I went to the settings of TomTom and then GPS-status > Configuration > Another Bluetooth GPS (Instead of built in GPS) > COM 4. All of a sudden it started working again!

Yes this is what happened to me. It detects the hardware but doesn't find a satellite for a quite a while and then after that first run of the GPS software it works fine.
I did one more hard reset today. Ran quickGPS, walked up a hill and placed the phone on a table for 30 minutes today. I have also restarted the phone and tried wayfinder, google maps and tom tom. At best tom tom gave me 3 gray bars. Wayfinder tells me that the signal is 25% but doesn't gives me a position. Goggle maps gives me a position but not so exact. I give up. Will leave it for service tomorrow. ohh, by the way. The support couldn't help me with any extra information.
GPS dead after hard reset
Hello,
The GPS of my Xperia is also dead after a hard reset.
Before it worked for weeks without a problem. After a hard reset is totally dead.
You should both install Chartcross GPSTest and run it. Set it to Auto. If you have no luck, kill the QuickGPS program from task manager and try again.
NB: When I had this problem, changing the baud rate to 9600 solved it, until the next hard reset when I had to set it back to 4800.
Hi Guys,
I'm having a similar problem with my X1.. I turn TomTom on after a hard reset and after a minute I get a GPS signal which is fine but then within a minute of using the app it completely freezes the phone and then the only way to get the phone working again is to remove the battery and start the phone again.. it seems to only happen when trying to make use of the GPS all other functions of the phone are OK as long as I don’t use the GPS..
Any ideas..?
I had same problem with gps refusing to get a lock so I just returned it to shop as it doesnt work as its supposed to. I think these forums are brilliant with lots of helpful people but at the same time I think £500 is enough money to spend that I shouldnt still have to search for help to get the phone to work as it should.

same issue... return device is nonsense, should be a software problem
make sure you set the GPS port as COM4, rather than Intermediate Driver. The latter is supposed to act as a virtual driver above the physical com port (com4), and selecting this "virtual" port will hang (at least on my Garmin MXT). I don't have that in my Touch Pro so I really think this is a Xperia bug.
must I deactivate "manage gps automatically"? can you tell me exactly ALL gps parameters? tnx
so has anyone found a solution to this yet?
SE support say they haven't even heard of the issue despite the number of posts about it around the forums
solution for me was: hard reset -> gps test -> tomtom and all others apps work fine

No satellites seen on any GPS software

I had GPS working well and could see the satellites on the concentric circles using both TomTom and HTC GPS Tool and then get a GPS fix. After a month all the satellites disappeared from the circles when using both pieces of software. I tried a soft reset which did nothing, then tried a hard reset and after reinstalling tomtom and htc gps tool I could see all the satellites on the circles and get a fix without a problem. It has now stopped working again.
I have ROM version 1.14.405.3. With both pieces of software I am using COM4 and baudrate 4800.
Anyone no how to fix this or has had the same problem?
Would really appreciate some help.
I have noticed that when its not working and I run HTC GPS tool and open the COM4 port the text displayed in the box is completely different to the text displayed when it is working.
I had also this problem one time. GPS came back the day after. I have no explication nor clue for the reasons why the GPS went off and came back.. I soft resetted a few time, but with no immediate results. No hard reset.
Fortunately, this does not happens too often (one time only for me), but I'm pretty sure this problem will come back when I'll badly need my GPS..
I have another problem which comes more frequently (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448148), but I have a workaround.
I hope HTC is aware of these problems ans will provide a fix very soon.
Unfortunately for me when this happens it is permanent and the only time it started to work again is after a hard reset. When it was working I could get a fix without a problem. I have also disabled A-GPS. It is very annoying.
What I see In TomTom with the GPS status is '' poor GPS reception" so the GPS is recognised. Please if anyone can help, its driving me mad.
I can only use programs allowing to set the gps manually to COM 4 and 57600 Baud. I cannot do this manually in the Windows settings, because they are not saved.
Right, I tried the program GPS test and I get the message ''starting GPS" with a yellow dot next to it. I think for some reason the GPS is not starting properly, maybe its because of a piece of software I installed although I tested the GPS after every installation I made and it worked and then suddenly it stopped.
I got fed up again and did another hard reset, installed only TomTom 7.910 and it is now working perfectly again.
I think I wont install anymore software for the time being and then see how long the GPS lasts for this time.

This will make your HD an expansive navigations system .
hehe, Indeed it will, don't know how long I will last before I get bored and start installing stuff again. Not sure what else to do.

GPS becomes locked/dead

I've encountered a problem with 2 seperate TouchHD's...I use Google Mobile Maps and all works fine. Then a few days later the GPS (internal) no longer responds.
I've soft reset, tried the HTC GPS tool, etc. Nothing...GPS dead. If I hard reset it comes alive again...
I tried flashing to the .25.25 Radio ROM but the problem remains. Does anyone have a solution? Hard resetting every few days is getting tiresome.
where do you try?
mine never work indoors only outside and in my car
It's not a problem of no satellites - the problem is that the software can't communicate with the GPS chip.
Even the HTC GPS Tool can't open the GPS port...no response. I tried TomTOm and it says "No GPS device". Lots of soft resets etc, no difference.
After a hard reset, all software can see the GPS again
Very strange
luckely i don't have such problems, I hope somebody can help you with your problem
I have had similar issues with other devices, unfortunately the GPS Chipset in HD is known to be a little buggy, also the Touch HD is still quite new and more stable firmware and drivers are bound to help,
Try a port splitting app like GPS Gate etc even just to check the GPS itself.
It could also be conflicting third party apps/tweaks especially seeing it comes back to life after HR. Check power saving mode, this can disable GPS as the battery get low same as the Phone Module. I have to say my HD GPS has been perfect with Tomtom no issue at all so its not out of the question that your device is faulty.
I had some issues like that because of a somewhat defect microSD
changed it and that fixed it
I had the same problem, then did a hard reset and com port 4 works again.
Easier solution is to disable and then reenable the Comm Manager options you have turned on. I noticed if Blue Tooth is on then it can cause an issue. I no longer have the problem since I turned off bluetooth by default, which is also a good safety tip!
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. It's not always, but after some days (2, 3 weeks) the GPS becomes dead. If I hard reset the GPS comes alive again.
Could it be a hardware problem on my device? I still suspect that is some application I install. Does anyone has a clue or a pattern on the applications installation and GPS stop working?
The last applications I installed and GPS stopped working was WM6VoIP and the Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3. Still trying to figure it out.
I have ROM 1.14.410.0 (24011) PTG
Radio: 1.09.25.14
Regards
I had the same problem when I installed second today.
Hard reset and problem gone but thats not the solution I think ...
to be sure there is no hw fault, maybe you can use your hd for a while with no extra software installed, except fixes and navigation software
if the problem still occur, then go to the htc service with it.
if not, you will have to have a lot of patience to find out wich application or setting cause the problem, but, at least, you'll know is not the device
Yes, I must do that. I already hard reset three times. For every app installed I always check GPS signal. It hasn't been critical but I'm afraid it may be hw fault. Let's hope not.
When I have some time I'll try WM6VoIP and the Advanced Configuration Tool again. I'll report to you later.
Thanks
Just in case someone has the same problem...
I finally found the cause of my GPS death. After installing WM6VoIP.cab the GPS is no longer recognized by any GPS software.
Regards

GPS

I cant seem to get my GPS working all the time. I've got some Freecaddie software but the GPS seems to work when it wants. What do I need to do to get it to work everytime I use the software?????
It should work out of the box, and works very well.
For the first fix though, stand under open sky for a while.
Are you using the GPS indoor? Getting a fix indoor is quite difficult and not possible in most cases until you are not standing next to a window.
i have a similar problem, i´m using igo on my hd and it worked very good in the beginning, but since a while when i start it, it gets a normal gps fix but then the gps connection only lasts a few seconds (5-6) and then looses connection for about 30 secs and when it finally finds it again it lasts again only 5-6secs...
can anyone help me? it´s very annoiying when i´m in a foreign town where i don´t have a good orientation and my navi system won´t help me at all
Hmmmmm - this should work "out of the box" whenever you use a GPS application.
Try this free app: Chartcross GPS Test 1.04 http://www.chartcross.co.uk
It will scan for a GPS device if you have one (as HD does).
that´s not my problem, igo finds my gps receiver...
GPS signal dissapears for 30 seconds then re-appears.
This is resolved by a soft reset, although in one case (When I actually was lost) it took 6 consecutive soft resets to finally start working whereas normally it only takes one or two...
I would be very interested to hear if anyone has a resolution to this issue?? or any idea's what may cause it not to work properly before one or two soft resets??
mine kept stopping for 30 seconds while I was driving, soft reset is a bit of a pain.. does QuickGPS help ?

Definitely, having QuickGPS updated won't hurt. Some people says it doesn't help much, but it should. It downloads updated data from satellites so that the internal GPS does not need to wait for that info. Anyway, GPS worked for me out of the box, without QuickGPS; it does the work very well and is quick fixing the position. Try GPS Test, as said above.
I have Duffy's 1.7 ROM (and admittidly this issue has only started since I loaded this ROM, Quick GPS is on, but shouldn't affect anything ONCE the satalites are locked... what happens is the satalites pick up for 30 seconds then off for 30 seconds then on then off ad infinitum. I use Tom Tom 7 and CheckPOInt, other than that fairly standard apps... core player etc. At the mo I'm just in the habit of soft reseting before starting GPS, from a soft reset button in touchflo programs its not so bad. Anyone else experiencing this exact thing of 30 on and 30 off??
The problem of losing GPS regularly happens if you have assisted GPS active. Uncheck this and all will work fine.
Does it still lock on fairly quick without Agps? I must admit I have not tried yet.
I have a problem where I've tried TomTom7 and in the GPS status screen it shows up to 7 or 8 satellites really quickly (maybe 10 seconds) then they all disappear a few seconds later, and it says something like "Are you sure you aren't inside a building?" (yes, I just didn't notice obviously!), then a few seconds later they all appear again & then off & on etc.
It's annoying but when they are showing they give a relevant position and speed.
Is this the same problem? No-one knows what is causing it I assume?
Crett, ( and a bunch of you above) sounds like you have AGPS enabled. AGPS (assisted GPS) must be disabled or it will do exactly what you are describing.
Cheers, and yes, I have got Agps activated. But it doesn't explain why it happens though.
Does the gps still work well without the download assistance?
It works flawlessly without AGPS and from what I remember (not 100% on this) , the AGPS is a bug through all HDs (drivers prolly) might even be throughout other htc phones

as i understood it, if your cellphone provider does not submit a proper agps signal, the htc always resets the gps with the faulty data. so switch of agps.
how do I disable agps??
cheers
Start, Settings, System, AGPS Settings, Disable.
And yes, it's working fine with it disabled.
Thanks

hmm haven't heard that but good to know. Now is the problem that htc coded it wrong (waiting for a wrong signal that doesn't come?)? That would be my take on it, since i haven't heard of anyone having the agps working (otherwise I'd think it would be the cell companies fault).
not sure if this helps, but i was just pratting around with settings in tomtom as mine was loosing signal every 30secondstoo. changed to max baud rate on com 4 and its now working sweet as

GPS unable to find my location.

So my G1 can't find my location via GPS no matter where I am. I am standing in the middle of a soccer field and it is "your location temporarily unavailable." So I installed GPS status from the market and it is showing that 0 satellites.
I am using JF 1.51, radio 2-22-19-26I, and the DEV SPL(the one with androids on skateboards). Anyone have this problem or know a way to fix it? This has been going on for a few days so it's not a satellite problem. It is phone related. If more info is needed from me I will do my best to get it to you.
Thing I have tried(updated last 16 JUN 2009 12:18 PM -6:00GMT)
-Toggle GPS on and off
-Reboot
-Combination of the above two multiple times
-device wipe(alt-w) and re-flash the JF1.51 ROM
-Toggles and reboots again
-wait for more ideas from you guys
Now I tried installing the dudes cupcake(awesome by the way) but GPS still doesn't work. It picked up one satellite for a couple seconds then it disappeared to 0 again.
Try toggling GPS off then back on. Maybe reboot the device too.

Did you try waiting a few minutes with GPS status ?
At some point my GPS was very very slow to get a lock.

I let it run all night(6 hours). Still reading 0 satelites.
Update. Got one satellite to show up for a couple seconds then it disappeared. This is after I wiped and installed the dude's latest rom. Still getting 0 satellites in GPS Status and no location on my maps. I have tried the old and updated google maps.

Do you have another GPS equipped device that shows satellite lock? If so, your radio might be dead.

I was afraid of that and I think it is. I just rooted my friends phone and everything works fine. Also I have a Blue Force Tracker(US Army advanced GPS monitoring computer, in laymans terms) and that is working fine. I'm gonna un-root and hope i can get an exchange with t-mobile. I've only had the phone for a month or two.
Just got off the phone with android support from t-mobile. It's funny when you relize you know as much them and then some at times. This place is great.
But back to the main point. I told them the GPS is out, and I have re-flashed the OS(i left out the root and other than t-mobile os's part). Final answer from the rep, we will send you a new phone, sorry yours broke. So that's it for that. JF and TheDudes ROM's had nothing to do with it. Just a bad model I got. Now to un-root...
I just reflashed my phone with stock JF1.51 to clear out some cruft from past experimentation. Upon loading up my complement of apps from the Market (including the 3.1.0 Maps app) I opened Maps and noticed it would not lock onto GPS with a clear view of the sky.
I was able to fix it by opening settings and turning off the Use Wireless Networks option then opening maps again. After it got the first GPS lock, I turned the Use Wireless Networks option back on. All is fine.
Might wanna try that out? It's worth giving a shot.
I don't know what happened but i have reflashed my phone over 5 times today. I was trying to put apps2sd back on JF1.51(skipped a step and bricked it, twice lol) and now it is working again. Strange.
