Stock SD Card Class? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I've got and old version of CM, and before I upgrade to 2.25, I want to partition the SD Card that came with the phone to allow Apps2SD. The manuals suggest that you need anything above a Class 2 SD Card, but I can't find any information on Google as to what the stock MyTouch SD card class is. There's a big '6' on the card itself, but I'm hesitant to think that it came with a Class 6, considering that a class 6 is top of the line.
Thanks.

the stock sd card that comes with the mytouch is a sandisk 4gb class 2.

Dang! No Apps2SD then.
Thanks.

You can still do apps2sd with a class 2. But on a mytouch it is unnecessary because you have nearly 300mb for apps. the g1 only had about 80 and that was with the hard spl giving you extra space.
If your memory card has a 6 on it, then it might be a class 6. anyway that you can post a picture to confirm?

Hmmm, maybe I misunderstood the purpose of Apps2SD then. I assumed it was so that if you wiped the OS of the device, you wouldn't have to go back and re-download all of them. Is it just for extra space?
I don't have something to take a picture with at the moment, but it sure gives the impression of a class 6. I'm going to skip the partitioning for now, and do it later, since it's not vital to CM 4.2.5

If you are just upgrading to a newer version of the same rom, or wiping a rom, then yes, you do keep your apps. If you flash a different rom altogether, it is recommended that you wipe your sd card, including the ext partition. so you lose the apps if you do that.
It was originally for extra space because the G1 could only hold like 30 apps and the memory would run low, or you could download some apps that are about 6mb in size, and you would fill it up even quicker, and with the cache being stored on the phone, bye bye phone memory in a flash.
The mytouch fixed that by having all that much needed extra memory for exactly that purpose. If you are worried about having to redownload all your apps again, get backup for root users. It will backup your apps, and if you wipe, or jump from rom to rom, you can get them all back with just a couple of key presses.

Ah, okay then. Thanks for the help.

that i dont know. i just use a card reader and format then depending on what build im using i wipe and start fresh
same thing happened to me last week on one of the dudes builds. My sd card was ruined. I tried to reformat it and then repartition it but it wouldnt let me repartition even though i deleted the old one. I messed with it for hours, before some one told me that it was ruined. all the transfering of info back and forth fried it i guess. I ended up buying a new one, this time class 6 (old one was class 2) I got it for 20 bucks (8gb) not to shabby of a price! sorry for your misfortune. Good luck

The same thing happened to me about 4 days ago, however Im running cyangones 3.4 Rom not the dudes, tell me ....were you running any themes at the time like the hero theme or any other? Are you using apps to sd as in do you have your sd card partitioned ? Im trying to figure out why this happened to me also, as of right now it has happened twice in 4 days then, I wiped my phone, reformatted / repartitioned my sd card and am not using any custome theme with cyanogens 3.4 rom and it seems to be ok. I only have a few apps right now because I want to make sure it doesnt happen again before I load up my sd card again with apps.
i had no themes and i was using app2sd. but i wasnt using any apps at the time.. just thought i would ad my 2 cents

ok
I reformatted then put files back on G1(including the dudes cupcake 1.3r2(cant give up on the perfect mod lol)) then wiped and Alt-s....only diffrence this time is that i am gonna use appmanager and not put everything on class 2 8 gig so it will not burn out...and hopefully it want destroy my sd card.Thankx to everyone you guys were a big help.
very interesting topic....
same here:
I tried with 3 other sdcards, 2 of them are 100% ok, NO GO, doesnt work anymore. First I thought that my G1 reader has a problem, some time it works, some time not. Im on dudes 12b with apps2sd. The fact that no card works tells me:
- Phone error
or
- Software problem (really strange if this is the problem)
I wipe right now and will tell you if the card works again....
i had similar problem last week when switching from cyan 3.4 to dudes 1.3 i first tried just doing an alt - w and that gave me a lot of errors and force closes so i started over and reformatted/repartitioned my sd. Now my sd card doesnt read when i plug into pc but still works in phone. everytime i want to change/edit sd i have to pull sd out and use an adapter..it sucks cuz the lil sd latch is such a pain to open and close on the g1..
ok wipe didnt anything... really strange thing I can do nothing anymore, card is not readable (in pc it is readable, but not in my g1)....
Config:
Dudes 1.2b
No themes, no extras
APPS2SD, 500 MB EXT Partition
8 GB Class 6 Card
If anyone has a hint for me, any help is welcome.
could this have something to do with apps2sd... this is happening to me as well, and it only started when i switched from jac 1.4 to the dudes 1.3rc1 it works good for about 24 hours sans the bluetooth issue. then the next time i check the phone its all whacked out and says to reformat the card.
Found this, hope that helps, unfortunately I dont have an external reader here:
source: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/unable-to-retain-formatting-on-sd-card-17338/index2.html
Turns out this is no more than an annoyance affecting the 1.5 JF builds. (not sure it's exclusive to those).
Anyway, long story short. The phone will always complain about the partitioning on the sd card and offer to "fix" the problem by re-formatting.
The key to the problem is to reboot the phone after the card has been re-partitioned. This will make the annoying pop-up dissapear and keep the partitioning table as defined.

Rerun apps to SD, uninstall reinstall all listed apps.
I had had this happen also. But I think most of it was my doing. I have a bad habit of not removing device safely after I copy files, I just use the eject button lol.. my p.c. even told me that I had removed usb device before the files were finshed bing prossed.. well whatever happend it didn't fry my card I just had to reformat it and. Run martins great skrip over agin and it was good to go.. I even went to buy a new usb cable just in case lol .. on hero/rosie running smooth ; )

Ext3?

So ive had an ext partition on my sd card since the mytouch first came out, i never ever use more than 20 apps at any given time so my question is, do i really need it?
You need a EXt partition if you plan on installing 100+ apps that are atleast 1MB each.
so there is nothing in the rom that depends on the ext partition besides ap2sd?

Depends on the rom. Some Hero roms use the ext because they put certain folders on the sd, like /system and parts of /data I believe. I have tried to run Hero roms without the ext and they will not boot up if you don't have the ext. I have tried it in Qtek's 1.8, Eugene's Espresso, and a couple others. I believe Sensehero does not use the ext, so you can get away without having one on that one.
All donut roms do not require the ext. I think some Eclair roms use ext.
Just gotta look through the specific thread of the rom and see what it calls for.
alright, i guess i'll be leaving my ext intact. Thanks you ace & tazz

i wouldn't suggest it unless your rom calls for it as i think tazz said... its going to kill your sd and if its not needed, i highly recommend you get rid of it. its a waste of space, ends up killing that part of your sdcard, and again a waste of space.
ok well im on my hero revolution, so thats cupcake which means i dont need ext?

and does it kill the sd card simply because of app2sd? if so cant i just keep the ext but disable ap2sd in my user conf? that way i can keep my sd without having to keep repartitioning my 8gb sd card every time i flash a rom that calls for it
bump, please someone answer?
well depends on the rom. if you disable the ext all together, it won't run because some of them have the /system stuff on it. If it's just apps2sd like JAC's new eclair, you can disable it with a simple edit to the user conf. and just keep it partitioned.
Anything whether it's ext or linux swap will shorten the life of your sd card because it's constantly reading and writing to the phone with those things. It's not like it'll be a drastic noticeable difference, unless you just got a bad card and it craps out on you. Most SD cards come with great warranties (my transcend 16gb class 6 comes with a lifetime warranty) nowadays so it really doesn't matter, just always remember to make back ups and keep them on your pc.
Thank You very much

Guide to upgrade to larger micro SD card when using apps2sd

I thought this might be useful to anyone else in my situation. I had apps2sd installed on the stock 4GB card but purchased a larger class 6 card and wanted to seamlessly switch over without reinstalling all my apps and have my application data work correctly etc. I couldn't find a straightforward guide online so I gave it my best educated shot and it worked for me. If you got apps2sd working then you should be familiar with the partitioning etc.
I got it to work upgrading using the following steps:
1. Nandroid +ext backup!
2. Copied all files/folders from old (stock) card onto folder in computer using a card reader (apps2sd and linux swap partitions aren't visible but are included in the nandroid ext backup) (Put aside old/stock card with all original data and partitions just in case the rest doesn't work)
3. Inserted new card into phone and booted into 1.6.2 recovery (go Carebear!)
4. Partioned new card. (I actually changed the partition size from previous setup so it shouldn't matter as it worked fine for me. Made 32MB linux swap and 512MB ext2 and the remainder FAT32)
5. Upgraded ext2 partition to ext3. Shut down.
6. Removed new card from phone, insert into card reader and copy all files from folder backup of old card onto the FAT32 partition of the new card.
7. Insert new card back into phone. Boot to recovery again and do a Nandroid restore of your +ext backup and VOILA!! It boot looped once but after second boot it has been running flawlessly with all apps installed on ext3 partition and all original data in place etc.
Hope this helps anyone confused, as I sure was. It really was much simpler than I thought it would be.

Thanks for the procedure, that will be very useful!
I'll also take this chance to ask you how were apps2sd performing with the stock 4Gb SD? this is the one thing that's keeping me from going the apps2sd way, not knowing if the stock card is too slow for it to work correctly.

Honestly, I didn't notice ANY difference in performance once I got it set up correctly. I have a class 6 card now but really, they seemed to run perfect on the stock class 2.

The real difference between a class2 and a class6 has to do with the swap, not so much a2sd, although the apps may load a little faster(nominal difference)... it really is all about the swap, and being able to write and read it faster.
On a G1, with 96MBs of swap, and most of a Hero ROMs RAM being on the swap partition, it was a huge difference, very noticeable, with the N1, very little will ever end up on the swap, and mostly is there to make it so that you can open a few more apps.

What do you recommend for size with the swap partition on an N1? I just went with the default 32MBs. Will I see any increase in performance by increasing that?

It is all about preference... with the N1 there really is little to no need for a swap. If you use it, yes the developer recommended 32 is probably best.
But this phone has so much RAM, that swap isn't really needed at all. The whole idea behind the swap partitions was so we could boot a larger ROM than the stock phone could handle, ie a Hero ROM on a G1.
None the less, there are some small benefits gained with swap used with one of the Desire ROMs... for me, I don't use enough different apps to really see those benefits, but others that use tons of apps will see the added RAM.

Finally upgraded my microSD card...questions

Semi Noob question.
I just am finally upgrading my SD card, bought a 16GB after using the stock since I got the phone. I had moved all apps to SD via Titanium backup, so...
1. Will copying the contents of the old SD over to the new one suffice or will other steps need to be taken after I put it in?
and 2. What is the idea setup as far as formatting goes, for Apps2SD, best performance, etc? Is there one way that's better than the others?
Worth noting that I'm on CM7 right now.

1. Should be fine.
2. I don't know if ext a2sd still works but 512mb ext3/4 with the rest fat32 works for me. No reason for swap.
A2Ext can still be used, if you partition via recovery it will wipe the SD card, so do that before copying stuff.

1. I would backup all the apps using titanium backup. I'm not too sure that moving them to SD is going to do it.
2. For Apps2SD, I have 512 megs ext 3 partitioned with no swap. I'd say go with ext3 because more roms are compatible with it...
I also upgraded from stock SD to a 16gb class 10 - all I did was copy all contents from one sd to the other. Everything worked right away.
Sure ain't like moving sd's in Symbian ... oh what a mess that was.

Space is all I want!

Hi all, so to start with, as the title says im constantly running out of space on the FN model 2015, so ive dived into the forum looking for help. First thing i tried was the sd card hack to combine my 64gb sdcard with the 8gb internal. Harra! it worked, but then i still run outa space as it dosen't seam to to use the sdcard space as i had hoped. It's like it just copys some of the data from the apps to the SD card like normal but without having to go into the each app and selecting external sdcard. Kinda thought no probs I'll download a custom rom with no samsung apps and with a min gapp giving me as much storage space i could get. I can't see one, starting to think there isnt one. So my question is, is it hard for me to take my backup of my stock rom and strip what I can out bearing in mind I'm a bit of a noob and have to follow instructions from the clever ROM makers? not to bothered about increasing the speed and looks just the space. Would be able nice to update them without having to delete a few and re-install the ones I deleted. Any advice on what coarse to take would be great. Maybe theres a ROM I've mist I could use and give thanks for?

Hi,
Instead of using Adoptable Storage, make 2 partitions on your SD, 1 FAT32 for photos, music, documents and another EXT4 for apps data. Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd , i tested it.
You can make 2 partitions using PC or with TWRP Recovery.

Thanks for your reply! I went down the apps2SD route in the end. Kinda mest it up a bit but have free'd up nearly 1gb of space so thanks, that's more than enough! %) I ended up partitioning the SDcard and linking all the apps I'm not interested in, excel,Skype,Samsung etc. Anyway what i didn't realise was that i had mest the other part of the partition up. Ended up re-formatting the SDcard in recovery back to normal and those apps I didn't want 90% of the data of those have now been wiped %)
