Help: Short and to the point, how to update rooted phone - Hero CDMA General

My phone is rooted, I can not retreive the original image through the backup, applying the zip to sdcard failed, OTA update failed.
1. Where can I get the original stock rom?
2. how to I copy it back to my phone with out ereasing all my info i.e. contacts, sms etc
3. after I re-install the original image, to i get the update OTA or any other way.
4. than do I have to re-root it?
your help will be greatly appriciated.
(sorry I am a newbie to android)

original sprint rom is here
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hero/Official-ROMs/RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release.exe
If u flash ur fone with it u WILL loose all ur info except for contacts if they synced with ur google account. Basically ur fone will become just like u took it out of the box brand new.
Then u will have to do OTA update
Then reroot again
OR u can just install a custom ROM that already has that update (Fresh Rom)

i backed up all my data with a backup program so that should do it, and my contacts are in outlook
???????????

then u should be fine probably, i never used any backup programs so i dont know if it will work for sure.

How to get started

I've looked at the wiki n such, but i'm still a little lost.
I want to update to the new 2.1 rom that was leaked off the eris, i know it's not perfect, but i still wanna give it a try. I have a sprint hero and i've never done any hacks.
Will i need to root the phone first?
Anyway to backup the phone just in case i want to go back?
How long will it all take?
nevermind.
Yes, you need to root your phone. Once you root it, use nandroid to create a mirror image of your phone just in case you decide to go back to 1.5 (note: this will not un-root your phone). And itll take about 10~15 mins maybe less, maybe more.
Ok i rooted it and on the guide i'm stuck. On step 16 of the commands, i type in su and it says permission denied, I allowed my phone to completely reboot and everything any it still says it.
Which guide are you following?
the one by theresthatguy
won't let me link to it cause i'm new or something. but its the one in the wiki for windows
Thats weird, thats the same guide I used way back when and it worked fine. You can try Fresh's kitchen auto rooter and see if it works. Link.
i got past the step where it says its rooted, i think i'm just flashing the recovery now.
ok i did it all over again and it worked fine, it's performing the backup now. now to install that 2.1 rom. will i lose my contacts if i do so?
You will lose all contacts but if they are synced to your Google account, they should sync after you log in.
yea my contacts arent on my google account, they're saved as phone contacts and i cant seem to find a way to change this. Any other way to back them up. HTC sync doesnt seem to detect my phone :/
Youll need to go to your contacts and change where it says something about contact type (2.1 doesnt show that) and select Google instead of phone.

How to reflash/rebrand ?

Hey guys i have successfully rooted my phone however i had an awesome app that let me check how much of my phone account i was using (Optus) and is wondering how to revert back to that firmware i used SEUS to grab two files ones 112MB and the other is 16MB i have followed the method to change the files in blob_fs but when i repair my phone it deletes the files i put in and starts downloading the new firmware again is they any way to restore my phone to Optus's factory default? Thanks for the input
This is the complete way of how to rebrand your phone with the new SEUS
http://www.xperiax10.net/2010/04/14/debrand-your-xperia-x10-tutorial/
Basically, the different is that you copies the two files, just after SEUS finished with the downloads and before the installation happening. Having the windows explorer overwrite confirmation dialog waiting while SUES downloading and hit OK before installation can do the trick. No need to actually waiting the download finished, and do the copy paste, overwrite then confirm.
I'm now also wondering about the SEUS next update that will prevent all debranding method to work, as now it just a matter for them add checking for the checksum of the file downloaded and the actual file before flashing, then we are toast, we cannot debrand anymore.
I've been looking around in this forum with no luck of make it happend, about how to decrypt our own branded ROM which most of us have them in back up, just for precaution in case that we need to use our original branded ROM for whatever reason such as warranty claiming.
Would be nice to see that we always have all decrypted branded ROM for flashtools up to the latest, in case we need them. then no worry about rooting, customizing, because you can always revert back (now i'm worried to root )
All you need to do is find what website the account app linked to. I had the same problem with my Telstra phone after root. But I bookmarked the Telstra site and added the bookmark to my home screen. Now the only difference is the icon.

New SEUS...

The new SEUS says that if the phone has modified software then it cannot be updated thus it cannot unbrick the phone right?
so if the case is like this. if i brick my phone with the installation of a custom rom then reverted to my working backup (Android 2.1 clean) will it be able to repair my phone even if it is rooted? has anyone tried this?
thanks
I only know this
When you bricked your phone, just enter to xRecovery and restore your backup
When you bricked your phone, just download and use x10flashtool and flash the X8 flash file
Sorry i just know this.. I didn't know anything about SEUS (because i never use it, when i use it, the update failed...)
I installed original firmware yesterday. Here is what I did. I had froyobread installed on my phone but since SEUS requires the original build.prop file of the SE firmware, I restored a backup of a SE ROM. Then the process went normally. SEUS didn't refuse to repair the phone.

howardmatthew168 is right! If you brick the phone you can flash the stock firmware with x10flashtool!

Has anyone done a stock Vodafone update from android 2.1?

Had to send my phone back to get serviced and am now rocking a k800i!
Grabbed my g/fs phone to surf and watch iplayer.
SHE'S STILL ON 2.1!!!!
Isn't that eclair?
I asked if she wanted the update done and she's worried about losing app data and all that. I can't find out if the standard vodafone update will nuke her phone when it updates.
Does anyone here know? (better answers from here than actual voda forums I'm guessing)
Hi,
In most case, a firmware update make you lose data (App installed, SMS...)
You just keep what's in the SDCARD (Pics, mp3...)
I think there is just the minor upgrade let your data on the phone...
So if you upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3 you gonna loose your data...
- So before updating i suggest you to backup your SMS, CONTACTS with a software (You have Backup&Restore i think). You also can save your app with configuration with an app like titanium backup
- I also suggest you to root your device to make a full backup of your data...
- And if you are courageous (lol) i suggest you to unlock your bootloader, install a new Kernel (Like that your phone will be faster and you will have Recovery). With recovery you can backup all your rom (Like a windows restoration)
- After that you can choose to stay in the stock rom or to install a custom rom (More customizable, faster...)
If you want to unlock, root, flash use Flashtool .. there is a guide in my signature...
If you want to install a new Kernel search one on the site and refer to his thread
If you want to install a custom, do the same...
I hope it helps...

Backup the Rom

Hi there, i have my SI9000 and hava had a lot of problems when installing any rom other than the one who came with my phone from the carrier i bought the phone, my carrier is Digitel from Venezuela and the firmware is the 2.3.4. I try installing the Gingerbread from SamMobile from other carrier and the phone work great for a week or so, but then it turns crazy... I did not find anywhere my carriers firmware, so a friend turn my phone dead and i went for a warranty replacement, thats when i get the phone with 2.3.4 again... I will like know to update ti JellyBean Custom Roms, which i have read there are pretty stable, even more than 2.3.4 so i will like to give it a try, the inly thing is that if I dont want to keep it for any reason and want to go back to my carriers firmware i dont have that firmware, so is there a way to create that rom file from the one already installed in my phone?
The exact version is: i9000uajv2
kernel: 2.6.35.7-i9000uajv2-cl566490 [email protected] #2
I would say flash kernel with root Semaphore for example and make a nandroid backup
Nandroid backup with JB blob folder
Hi there
I am using Jelly Bean and Sem 2.5
When performing a nandroid I obtain a backup folder plus hundreds of folders in a blob folder for incremental backup
For me, it costs too much space.
Is there a way to get around this?
I just delete the whole folder clockworkmod from internal sd after I saved it on ext sd & pc. When I need 2 restore i put it back on internal sd in cwm mounting it.
