I am trying to install debian on my rooted g1, us rc33.
This is what I type in the telnet client and I get this error. I am following this guide.
Code:
# # insmod $kit/ext2.ko
insmod: init_module '/sdcard/kit/ext2.ko' failed (No such file or directory)
What is wrong and how do I fix it?
ext2.ko isnt there..... i have the same problem.... my first problem was the bootdev wouldnt run. secondly, i dont/didnt have that same file, so i googled that sh*t and downloaded it. i stuck it in, but still doesnt work. could you tell me if your bootdev worked? i'll try to help you out too if i can get passed this damn problem first...
The thing is that it is there !!!
For some reason it show up on ls but insmod doesn't recognize it!!
ok, i got fed up with my own little problem. i fixed whatever i did before, then deleted everything and restarted. now i got the same problem as you. is there anyone else out there that would know about this?
im trying to work on this as i type btw
ok i have found something very interesting! is the partition on your sdcard fat32? mine is.....and i am having this problem. i noticed that you cant chmod any permissions because its a fat partition. in curiosity, i made sure of this, and i copied the file to the data folder, and voila, i was able to change permissions. im damn sure we need to create an ext2 partition on the sdcard, then re-copy the debian files needed to that partition so the linux kernel can manipulate the files we need to. im in windows right now on my laptop, so let me do my thing with this card, and i will post what happens after that....
edit: thus why the system can not "see" the file when trying to read it because it doesnt have the right permissions to do so...
This is a basic gui I wrote to unlock my encrypted partitions during boot.
I'm running my /data and /sdcard partitions encrypted, and the "luksunlock" binary is launched from init.rc to read the password and unlock the encrypted partitions.
I have included my somewhat modified init.rc for those interested.
For more information about LUKS on Android see this blogpost, written by shawn (Seems I'm not allowed to have urls in the post, but Google for 'android luks' , first hit)
This works good on Wildfire, altough it should work fine on other phones as well. Just remember that you need to set up your partitions as in the luksunlock.c (or change the defines).
Dont forget to backup before you start playing around!
Good luck!
Thanks! i'll give a try!
Hi,
I tried to use your cryptsetup binary from your blog, but I have some issues that you'll sure have an answer:
I run ./cryptsetup luksFormat -c aes-plain /dev/block/loop2 and after i put the luks password it says 'Command failed', no logs, no other output, even using the -v flag...
Any clue?
Thanks in advance!
PS: the module dm-crypt is necessary for cryptsetup? could be this the error? I don't have it installed on the system because I can't find it for 2.6.35.9-cyanogenmod

CM6.1 for wildfire uses a 2.6.32 kernel (see HCDR.jacob's post about his custom kernel for more info)

Yeah you really need dm-crypt support, either compiled into the kernel or as a module. You also need the AES ciphers support.

Hi! Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.... ok, but the problem is that i'm running CM6.1 with 2.6.35.9 which has no dm-crypt module neither compiled in kernel... where can i find some kernel with this modules included? Is for an HTC Desire (@Sympnotic )
Thanks in advance!
Great work and thanks for sharing @Sigkill. Working on building it here for my NexusOne with CM6.1.
BTW, I’m the lead on a project working on general secure Android distro – we’ve ported Tor, have an OTR IM app, and have supported other projects along those lines. Would love to talk more about supporting anyone working on this specific capability.
wow! awesome work!!! Very exciting news. Gonna give this a go on my MyTouch Slide

Seems really nice. I like the secure phone concept.
New Makefile and wiki info up
_hc from the @guardianproject has a new build process up for Crypsetup/LUKS which includes a Makefile compatible with Android NDK r5.
We have new instructions up on our wiki, as well.
I cannot post links under this account, but you can find the info on github if you search "LUKS" or just under our guardianproject account.
How did you create the encrypted partitions? Could you give some pointers for that. I am familiar with using dmcrypt/cryptsetup on desktop linux, I guess this works similar. What are the relevant device names? Did you run into any problems?

Hi, sorry for the late answer,
/dev/block/mtdblock5 is the "userdata" partition. I formatted it and mount it to /encrypted-data during init:
mount yaffs2 [email protected] /encrypted-data nosuid nodev
The only file on this partition is "data.encrypted" file, which gets created in init.rc as a loopback device:
exec /system/bin/losetup /dev/block/loop0 /encrypted-data/data.encrypted
I created the "data.encrypted" file on my computer with cryptsetup and losetup, and copied all files from my old unencrypted userdata partition to it and then copied it back as a file to the formated userdata partition.
The sdcard "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2" partition is formated with "cryptsetup luksFormat", I did this also on my computer, saves some time. And then copy everything from the old unencrypted sdcard.
I did run in to one problem recently, my phone hung during boot, about 4 months after I started encrypting my phone.
Had to copy my data.encrypted file to my computer, mount it as a loopback device and do a fsck, and then copy it back to my phone.
I suspect this has to do with the filesystem not being umounted properly. (I have had this on my to do list for a while hehe)
Probably should make a script run during shutdown to cleanly "luksClose" the encrypted partition and then umount them. Not doing this is probably very crazy
I also want to fix it so my "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2" partition gets presented to my computer when i attach my usb cable (as it should do), so i can unlock it in ubuntu and copy images and files. Right now i have to take my memorycard out and put it into the computer.
I hope this post makes sense, it was written in haste =) Good luck!

I figured most of that out without your post and tried it on my desire (I created the luks partitions with adb on the phone though, worked anyway ). Then I couldn't figure out where my regular init.rc is stored (I could only find the one used by Clockwork Recovery), and then I figured I already spent enough time, tried a reboot (which of course didn't work). Then I couldn't even get into recovery (probably because its init.rc tries to mount /data which doesn't work? I didn't investigate any further). Flashed my backup with fastboot and was stuck again with my un-encrypted pre-experiment state
Oddly enough, it was no problem to unlock my encrypted SD-card from my computer (running ubuntu) while in recovery (clockword has an option to present the sd card to a computer connected via usb). Maybe the booted system handles this differently than recovery though? I didn't get a chance to try, as I couldn't boot after my encryption attempt.
I will try again after my algorithm and data structure exam this friday and report back
Is anybody using the UI on another device than the Wildfire? Does it work?
How much is the performance drain when using an encrypted /data partition?
Amazing work!
Did anyone manage to make sigkill1337's luksunlock build from source ?
I would like to change the path of the data/sdcard partitions to match my device but I tried many ways using the NDK and I can't get it to compile properly.
Is there any way to do this ?
I have been trying for days, I am getting literaly insane !
@sigkill1337 : could you give me some pointers ? I would appreciate a lot.
mount manpage said:
The bind mounts.
Since Linux 2.4.0 it is possible to remount part of the file hierarchy somewhere else. The call is
mount --bind olddir newdir
or shortoption
mount -B olddir newdir
or fstab entry is:
/olddir /newdir none bind
After this call the same contents is accessible in two places. One can also remount a single file (on a single file).
This call attaches only (part of) a single filesystem, not possible submounts. The entire file hierarchy including submounts is attached a second place using
mount --rbind olddir newdir
or shortoption
mount -R olddir newdir
Note that the filesystem mount options will remain the same as those on the original mount point, and cannot be changed by passing the -o option along with --bind/--rbind. The mount options can be changed by a separate remount command, for example:
mount --bind olddir newdir
mount -o remount,ro newdir

If nothing helps, you should always be able to bindmount it
I'd rather get sigkill1337's UI to compile...
Lots of nice security tweaks and settings could be done with a pre-boot GUI
Anyway, concerning encryption, I'll use the bind option for now, thanks for the tip.
But if anyone here could give me some pointers about compiling this stuff it would be great.
I managed to compile it by integrating luksunlock in Android source externals and main.mk but when I push it to my phone and modify init.rc to call it, it just does not work...
Other modifications are working (mount, mkdir, etc.) but the GUI won't show up
Sorry for the late reply.. But you could try running it from a shell when the phone is booted, just to verify that the binary starts (thats how I tested it without having to reboot my phone all the time)
My environment for building the source was setup using one of the tutorials online, nothing out of the ordinary
Im still running this on my phone, for almost 8 months now, I havent noticed that much in performance problems, the Wildfire was slow before i started using luks.
When i get a new phone (maybe SE Arc) i will be easier to see if performance is affected
There is an Issue for getting CM support for encrypted filesystems during boot:
Issue 2736: support encrypted filesystem from boot
If you want to get that feature, just "star" it, so it may get more attention.
I have tried searching forums here and google and am just running in circles with same solutions to every problem except mine, the few times I HAVE seen a problem similar to mine, it has been added to an existing fix and no answer posted.
I have an old NC (stock 1.0.1) and quite a while ago i put a new honeycomb rom on it that worked great for a few days, then black screen. following various guides here I have seen the "need to update CWM" and all the like, but here is what I have and the problem:
I have CWM 3.2.0.1, I have tried a variety of restore to stock and custom roms, but it doesn't seem to matter what i add to the sdcard after writing the CWM image because no matter what I do (tried TWRP and got same results) I always get the following errors:
Turn on while plugged in with sdcard in --
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log

Error formatting /data!
Formatting /system...
Error formatting /system!
When I try to mount sdcard --
Error mounting /sdcard!
When I try to mount USB --
E:Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)
I am able to see the device with cmd adb devices...it gives me a bunch of 0's instead of the actual s/n and says "recovery" at the end of that line.
Have i managed to completely brick a NC or is there a way to fix this? I have learned quite a bit since I decided to try and fix the black screen, but nothing I have found has given me a solution to this.
I appreciate you guys being here and thanks in advance for any help you may have!
**UPDATE** 06/18/2012
by following this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919353 ) guide, i am able to get some result with sudo:
Code:
[email protected]:~$ sudo android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
0000000000000000 recovery
Then I try entering the quoted commands and even attempt to edit them, but the result sucks:
Code:
[email protected]:~$ dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
dd: opening `/sdcard/boot.img': No such file or directory
[email protected]:~$ sudo android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/adb shell
~ # dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
dd: can't open '/sdcard/boot.img': No such file or directory
~ # dd if=/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
dd: can't open '/boot.img': No such file or directory
~ # dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
dd: can't open '/sdcard/system.img': No such file or directory
the reason for this is that I can't mount the sdcard. if i could mount the sdcard, then this would be an easy fix and i never would have posted in the first place. using CWM 3.2.0.1 in place of nookie froyo since EVERY link for nookie froyo i have found has been a dead link or the instructions require mounting the sdcard which is the problem i am having. Also, CWM 3.2.0.1 and TWRP 3.2.0.1 or older are the ONLY things that actually allows the NC to turn on.

Look in my tips thread linked in my signature. There is an updated CWM SD listed there. Try using that. Read items A8 and A10.
Edit: I suspect your internal partitions are somehow corrupted. Search the threads for references to restoring stock partitions.

Ok, first of all, thanks for the fast reply. Second, with CWM 3.2.0.1, I can see the CWM menus and navigate them, however, with the 5.5.0.4 I am left with the black screen. I have so far attempted including restore zips and nothing but the 5.5.0.4 with no success.
I believe that somehow, with all my attempts to fix, the internal may be completely wiped, but I still find it strange that from a NC I can only use the 3.2.0.1 or older CWM or TWRP to get anything besides a black screen.

I suspect the 5.5.0.4 did not get burned properly and it is not trying to boot from it. It just is still trying to boot emmc which is corrupt. But I'm not sure that it would have done you any good anyway. Like I said in my edit above, I think you need to somehow rebuild your partitions. And that means more than just trying to flash a stock ROM. You have to find a thread that tells you how to use adb to rebuild the partitions.

I used win32diskimager and received no error messages, so i guess it was the long shot.
I have been digging through all kinds of recover partitions threads but have thus far been plagued by dead links. My searches for adb partitioning keeps showing me recovery zips that I have already tried multiple times. Atm I am working on IOMonster's method, but have my doubts.
I will post results and if I manage to find an ADB guide, I will link it or repost it with citations and keywords to make it easier to find

No error messages and being able to read in your PC does not necessarily mean it will boot from it.
But like I said, I'm not sure it would have helped you anyway. Did you look at this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25433167
Your problem is that your partitions have gotten corrupted.... you will need to dd some img's back to the nook... I have all of them available... but for /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 and 0p3 you will need to do some editing... since they are device specific.
If you're lucky... /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 is still "normal" and the device can recover 0p2 from the rombackup.zip on there... if not... editing is in your future.
Anyway... if you need the img files... I can make them available... have helped a few out with this problem.
Thanks guys, I'm gonna dual boot linux and get to work on the harder to do things now, but with my kids running around it'll take me some time to do.

I've been flashing N7 with no issues as recently as over the weekend. Today I tried to flash a new ROM and it failed. Tried a second, different ROM, same result. Do not know what I did. Any thoughts?
Error log would help greatly.
How do I get/generate the log? Haven't had to do it before.
Thanks,
Paul
The logs= errors displayed on the screen provided by the interface you use to flash the rom (recovery, computer...)
Does this help any?

Have you tried completely wiping the device? And pushing a ROM from ADB or using a USB OTG and Memory stick?
I had issues with my nexus becoming VERY unstable. Leading to issues.
I completely, and I mean completely, wiped. To the point that all that device basically had was a recovery, and a bootloader.
I proceeded to flash again, BOOM all fixed up.
Is there a new TWRP?
I did a factory restore after wiping everything thing, if that is what you mean?
It was working as expected last week, don't know what I did to screw it up

None of the instructions currently found in this forum alters the partitioning of the N7. Not fastboot & not the custom recovery, either.
You are chasing a red herring I think. That message you see is about the recovery performing a scan to check to see if there is a change in file systems (or partitioning of external devices) ... which might have occurred in preceding (custom recovery) operations, but didn't in this particular case.

You can also soft-boot a recovery without actually flashing it, e.g.
Code:
fastboot boot custom-recovery.img
I suppose you could then poke around and see if it is having troubles mounting any of the normal partitions (/data, /system, or /cache). Look in the kernel boot log of the recovery (cat /proc/kmsg or "dmesg") to see if anything looks strange, etc.
There have been a couple of reports from folks who developed problems that looked like eMMC flash media errors - loss of partitions, failure to mount /data, et cetera. At the moment though, your symptoms are very generic and non-specific, as in "it doesn't boot".
I suppose you saw no errors at all reported on the screen during that stock-install-via-fastboot procedure?

The only error is that it can't open the zip. I've tried downgraded TWRP, then upgrading back. Tried flashing the existing rom.
Nothing has worked. The N7 is functional, just will not allow me to flash

Well, if the source material can't be opened, then there is nothing to be flashed.
So maybe it is better to call this a "can't open files" problem instead of a "can't flash" problem.
Are there any special characters in the file name ... or spaces? If so, try renaming the file so the name only contains [a-z], [A-Z], [0-9] plus dash, underscore, and dot.
The other thing that can happen is if you drop a file in /data/media/0 as the root user, it will show up under /sdcard, but can't be read by non-privileged users via the /sdcard/ path. I'm not sure what the exact details are here - much less why this would effect the recovery (as you would expect everything to be running as root there) - but you can detect this problem by using a terminal emulator, and looking for differences in ownership or file permission:
Code:
$ su
# cd /data/media/0
# ls -ld *
use chown and chmod as appropriate to fix files as needed

The file names are from the developers, once of which I recently successfully flashed. Tried coping the log to the SD card, but unable to find /data/media/0. Do I need to recreate a partition?
(FYI there was an auto-correct typo in my prior post - "su" not "such". Derp)

No. (There is no way to do that with the tools we have anyway)
Unless what you mean by "recreate" is rebuild/reinitialize a filesystem in a partition - that's a possibility.
You need to try and figure out why you can't read files.
As a workaround, you can put files on a USB key (FAT formatted, not NTFS) and using TWRP access them by putting the USB key on the other end of a OTG cable.
Your posts are a bit vague - I can't even tell if you have tried other ROM files, whether you checked them to see if they are the correct size/checksum, etc.

At this point, your best approach is still to follow the initial advice of 'ibsk8'. Look in the log file for any further details about errors that occurred.
The logs are typically in /cache/recovery/ or (while the custom recovery is running) in /tmp
Use "adb pull" to get the log file to your PC and have a look at it. If you can't find anything obvious in there, then cut-n-paste the file to http://pastebin.com and provide the link to us.

I am not familiar using ADB pull. Tried using a root file manager to access the log but don't see.
Greatly appreciate your help, let me know what other info I should paste.
Thanks,
My Razr M is running BlissPop-v3.4-moto_msm8960_jbbl-Official-20150531-0035. It's been solid for a few weeks now. My external SD card is 16GB.
My external SD card (sdcard1) now has an errant file with empty date, time, and permissions. Unfortunately, it appears to be an important file, as it's called ".android_secure". Ghost Commander no longer will read sdcard1, even in root mode, as it fails on that file. Total Commander will read sdcard1 just fine, but not that file. I've tried to rename this file and change it's date/time/permissions with no success. Even in root mode, Total Commander won't touch it. I also fired up the Terminal Emulator and tried chown and chmod; both gave me a "permission denied" error even after "su".
The built-in file manager (Cyanogenmod) sees sdcard1 just fine, but doesn't show this file.
My best guess is that ".android_secure" used to be a folder, but something messed it up. I'm not sure what caused this problem as I've done nothing unusual that I've not done before. I got an error during an SFTP transfer this morning when I was copying my latest set of backup files from TiBu, but I think that has happened before. I restarted the SFTP transfer and it worked just fine. I was using Ghost Commander to do the transfer.
I have never moved any apps to sdcard1. Everything else seems to be working fine.
What I think I'll need to do at this point is unmount sdcard1, remove it, then use my desktop to delete that file. I can't do anything to it with any program on the phone. I'll do a "fsck.vfat" on it while it's plugged into my desktop (which runs Linux) and see if that shows anything.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Update:
I played with it a bit more just now and things seem to be working, though it's confusing. I will blame whomever invented the VFAT format and Google for creating such an ugly kluge to get around its limitations.
I'm using Ghost Commander for all the following:
- In root mode, I can't look at /storage/sdcard1 without getting an error: "lstat /storage/sdcard1//.android_secure failed: permission denied"
- In root mode, I can look at /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 just fine. .android_secure shows up as a folder "drwxrwx---" from Apr 30 23:54, and it's empty
- Not in root mode, I can again look at /storage/sdcard1 just fine. .android_secure shows up as an empty file with no date
Anyway, probably nothing was wrong, but because of this ugly kluge, somehow I ended up in the wrong place even though they all look the same.
Please give a try a new beta version of the application.
