comparing HD2 to Touch HD...I found this...and I didn't want to believe it.
(source: www.pdadb.net)
RAM capacity HD2: 448 MiB , 201.28MiB accessible
RAM capacity Toch HD: 288 MiB , 195.5MiB accessible
ROM capacity: HD2: 512 MiB, 207.13MiB accessible
ROM capacity: Toch HD: 512 MiB, 327.15MiB accessible
Full accessible ROM HD2: 207.13 MiB
Full accessible ROM Touch HD: 327.15 MiB
after some research...2 members helped me to get a screenshot and those numbers (thank you)
Touch HD (english rom) on the left side and HD2 (german rom) on the right side.

any1 care to explain? I feel like I'm disgusted. Where are those 512 MB Rom and 448 Ram? I mean 512 MB is disgusting itself..but these numbers are way lower.
As far as RAM is concerned, the screenshot seems to be from a beta firmware. There's over 300 MB in the final version, you can look up newer screenshots if it matters much for you. This is a lot of available RAM if you ask me.
As regards the flash memory, the ROM image is over 300 MB, which leaves around 200 MB available. There's a lot of stuff there including navigation software, and the new Manila aka HTC Sense is huge. Custom ROMs may free around 30 megs or more by throwing away stuff like CoPilot (which belongs on the storage card, IMO), and if you don't like Manila you can probably save another 50 megs or more.
I'm not sure this will help you feel less "disgusted" though, but hopefully should count as an explanation.
thanks for the reply...what you say does make sense.
still wondering tho why the total storage is not 512 ROM and 448 RAM but barely 200 ROM and 320 RAM...
even if the storage is in use, it should be mentioned what the total capacity is.

I think they only show the total that is available to you, not the part they have used for the OS and everything.
This has always been the same on all devices, not just HTC and its been pointed out on every new release.
Not 100% sure, but think thats why anyway

Yep, that's exactly the case. As regards ROM, they report total minus whatever is taken by the image (and can't be used). As regards RAM, that's total minus Page Pool (and probably RAM required for video). So both numbers are "real" numbers available to user software (WM included).

Hi there. I just bought Galaxy 8gb yesterday. Today i've noticed that in my either computer or in phone settings it showing me only 5.78gb. So where is my 2gb gone? Help please.
Still there. 1+Gb is partitioned for applications. The remaining 5.78Gb something is for your personal storage.

Samsung uses the 2Gb to store the cache of applications. It is formatted in a different filesystem and not supposed to be accesible to the user. Thats why you only see about 6GB.

Thanks guys.
that is why the 16 GB version is better
16 GB version have the same 2GB partition for applications.
The difference is that you have 14GB left rather than 6GB.
I use to remember on my old old original Palm V almost 10 years back, it only have 2MB and THAT was considered a lot for all your contacts.
Talking about Palm V, I still have it and it is sturdy as rock! I wish Samsung or other manufacturers learned from the past. The curves and the feel of the magnesium alloy is unbeatable.

GSMarena then is incorrectly listing the details:
Internal 8 GB/16GB storage, 512 MB RAM, 2GB ROM
When I read this I assumed 512MB for CPU, 2GB ROM for operating system, 8/16GB for applications and storage.
What your saying is the 2GB ROM is actually a partition of the 8/16GB?
Then is that not false advertisement or am I missing something.
That's not correct either. There is a 2gb rom chip but in order to allow you to install more application (especially things like navigators) samsung moved the cache for the applications off the ROM in order to save space there.

indeed.
i still have and use my old Palm 650 and 600
i still cook update ROMs to reflash it every now and then to keep it current, and squeeze every little bit of RAM i can out of it, else it runs with a log of lag without enough free RAM

For those ppl who dont own a webtop dock or will never use webtop interface,
it there a method to remove or disable the webtop interface
that can release the 512 MB ram for Android usage?
It would be blazing fast if we could do so!

If its not running, its not using 512 ram....
it's just like an app, if it's not running it doesn't take any of your memory.

I think he's referring to the face that the Atrix has a 2GB RAM chip inside, but half is used for the phone, and half for webtop.
At the moment there's no way to redistribute the RAM, but perhaps there will be in the future. In the meanwhile, don't worry too much about free RAM, with 1GB of operational RAM, it's not going to be what bottlenecks your phone.

erm 2 gb ram? where did you find that?
I think he means Atrix has 2GB ROM.
About RAM: You can see through comparision between Atrix and Galaxy S2:
- Atrix has 818MB Ram for Apps, with stock apps ( included bloatwares ), free Ram ~ 480 - 560MB. My Atrix free upto 620MB with many apps installed
- Galaxy S2 has 848 Ram for Apps, same condition, free Ram ~ 454 - 550MB.

So you can see webtop won't effect your Ram in real life usage!
See below Screenshot guys.... and tell me how it comes that i got only 766,3MB RAM.
Got a HK Version.... you got same issue ?? ... am i the only one ?? ...
Quadrant Benchmark shows me same ..... a Bug of the Firmware ??

I noticed this also on my HK 7.7 version. I wonder if it's a firmware issue.
On every phone there is less, because of android, gpu and so on

This is normal. Android manages RAM differently. Essentially, core applications and system resources receive a dedicated, high-priority slice of that 1GB RAM pie. That slice then becomes basically invisible to the user, so you see what's left over.
Not just Android, but most any OS. Look at your available RAM in your Windows system info. If you have 4GB installed then chances are Windows will tell you it's only 3.2 or thereabouts.
You're fine.
Well ok i know that but i had a HTC Flyer when i pushed there to Harware information there shows 1GB RAM ... and here it shows only 766,3MB and the rest of the RAM is hiding by samsung Firmware ????
It is the same on my Galaxy S(1).
512mb Ram but it only shows ~320Mb

The reason for that is slightly different. 32-bit versions of Windows can only 'see' and use about that much ram due to limitations of the 32-bit system, once a decent graphics card is installed. On my 64-bit Windows 7, I see and can use all 12GB of my ram. I don't think Android runs into limitations of this sort under 1GB.

I´m think he doesn´t mean the Sd card , but i think what he mean that his RAM is about 372.73 mb .. I checked that on my HD2 (Europe with Xboxyuki rom) , I´ve got that size too .. ._. , Did the HD2 don´t have 512 mb ram ?
Sorry for my bad english i´m from germany ^^
Well i don't see the problem, NFS undercover runs just fine (the demo, didnt want to buy the game) my HD2 also says it just have 372.73 mb ram, i dont think it's a problem
i dont know if u sideloaded the game or bought it from the store, or it was a demo, but the game from the store runs just fine for me
I don´t see a problem with games ect. too. But i prefer my HD2 more for school and that kind of things .. NFS runs fine (with a few lags maybe but nevermind ^^). Office and everything runs perfekt on HD2.
Ok, but what about the size of RAM? Why it is showing this much???
your SD card not working (not supported)....
relax guys, the other part of the RAM is being used by the gpu..

Free RAM isn't bad RAM IMHO. That old and outdated saying is only applicable to those who only have 512mb RAM or lower because cached sessions are stored in the memory. But if your used up RAM is occupying 3/4 or more of the device even without any applications running then "used RAM is bad RAM" because you don't expect any cached session to use over 1GB of memory. It should only occupy a few hundred MBs. Which means cache aren't the ones occupying your memory but (unoptimized)background apps does.
I don't care of free ram.... if it uses all when it is running ultra smooth, so be it..... that's what counts.... i'm using stock rom with boeffla kernel.
