Which is better, wm6.1 or wm6.5 ? - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

Does it worth upgrading from wm6.1 to wm6.5 ?
Or should we stick to wm6.1 ?
The wm6.5 interface looks nice, but I don't know whether it is buggy.
And I don't want a honeycomb start menu!!!

6.5 is imo way better than 6.1, I really like the startmenu and the lockscreen (now I don't need to install S2U2 anymore). It's not sluggish at all for me and I haven't discovered any bug(s) yet.

6.5 is much better if you compare to 6.1.
I know Microsoft does not give, as pexpected in 6.5, but TD2 is designed for 6.5. So no second thoughts.
Thanks.

Yes between 6.1 and 6.5, 6.5 is much userfriendly and touch friendly, good looking, but the original ROM that came with is much better, now with official 6.5 I have to restart the phone everyday and hang some apps like Live Messenger.

only downside is the honeycomb menu. admitedly it sucks and i don't know how to change it yet.
on the other hand though, its a much quicker, sleaker and overall better feeling OS. I say upgrade

Thank you for all the comments!
I thought wm6.1 would be better. (Glad that I was wrong)
The wm 6.5 sounds good! Mm...tempting...!!!
But the honeycomb start menu is still problem I think it looks untidy and I've seen people trying to arrange the icons. Troublesome. Maybe I will upgrade my TD2 until someone finds a way to change the honeycomb start menu.
One question, is there TF3D in wm6.5?
Thanks.

I have had roms with WM6.5 on before. There aren't many differences to my mind between this and WM6.1. There are just a few aesthetics. Other than that, there aren't any appreciable benefits.
The other thing is with the HTC upgrade WM6.5, this is based on Manila 2.1. I use and prefer Manila 2.0. Basically, 2.0 can show the next couple of weeks of appointments on your home screen. Manila 2.1, 2.5 and 2.6 only give you today and tomorrow. That's a show stopper for me in itself! Therefore, I'm sticking with the stock rom with 6.1. I did try ESSential (or something like that) which is based on the stock rom with 6.1 and manila 2.0. This was quite good in terms of speed/memory/stability, but there were a couple of bits that I didn't like, so reverted back to the stock rom. There is plenty of ram available on the TD2 and the stock 6.1 rom is very stable....

Having not installed it myself, that is the overall impression I am getting from this forum. If the Bluetooth had been fixed so that I could use it as an external modem, I would upgrade. Otherwise it seems a sort of 'sidegrade'.

That was my impression too based on the 6.5 ROM I tried a while back (I can say that safely now I see others are "coming out" too!). I think 6.1 and 6.5 are closely related underneath, it's mostly the new interface which differentiate them. If it was going to be that much different, it would have been called 7.0
@mitsi: First of all, Hi! I'm from Sutton (just round the corner). What didn't you like about !Aman!'s TESS 6.1 ROM? I'm using it now instead of stock, I sorted out most of the differences which annoyed me. It's nice to have all the latest versions of the apps in one package, and the storage space and RAM boost are useful too.

This icon arrange problem is why i use new cooked roms. 23017 build and upwards you can arrange icons with easy drag and drop style. Working ok...
And yes, there is TF3D/Sense...

Hi Pete from Sutton! Two geeks within 2 miles! That's a high density, isn't it!
Most Rom Chefs seem to be concentrating on Manila 2.1, 2.5 and 2.6 at the moment. It was Aman's rom that I tried. This was very good. But there were a couple of points which I didn't like. Plus points were the Aman ram (about 10mb more free than stock) and rom (again about 20-30mb more free than stock) but minus points were the manila was compressed (so I couldn't alter it with my manila modifier (that's not what the programme is called, but I can't remember what it was) and also I couldn't disable the HSDPA/HSUPA in the settings which doubles my battery life and doesn't seem to slow up internet. It was a close call, but the stock rom won for me as it has enough rom/ram (200mb/85mb free) anyway.
I'll look out for someone with his burried in his TD2....

No contest for me - 6.5 is much better. Lots of incremental and small changes make the overall experience much better.

I've got it in TESS: Settings-All settings-Connections-Advanced network.
I hadn't given it a second thought, always had it on "enable HSDPA" (thought it must be a "good thing"),must try without. T-Mobile is so slow anyway, doubt I'll detect a difference

Yeah, I'm the idiot on the Sutton to London train with that Sony Bluetooth stick clipped to my t-shirt which make people think I'm a right...

Hi Pete,
For the HSDPA, I know there is a setting there in the Aman rom, but it didn't seem to have any effect. Disabling it on the stock rom seriously improved my battery life from one day to two.
I want/need to edit the Manila because I don't like the HTC green, so I amend all the Manila, bmp's and png's myself to make them dark red
I think you are right about the speed, but to be honest, I didn't notice that much difference, so the stock rom is good enough for me.

6.1 by a mile, 6.5 was rushed out by the looks of it!

[19/10/09] TomAngel-ROM-GERMAN-WM6.5-23016 M2D+Titanium initial BETA!

Hi, all German Friends...
I'm proud to release my initial Beta of a German WM6.5 for our Polaris!
This is my first attempt to cook a Rom so if you love your Rom, don't use mine
For sure there are still many bugs and half translated apps, but I appologize for it.
I will correct it in further releases.
My Rom is based on gullums Kitchen with WWE 6.5, so I think it will not brick our device.
I only tested it by myself, so I can not guarantee for others.
It is really very BETA.
If someone is able to give some screenshots, feel free to add some
It is nearby like Kostas244.
I messed up 3g-Dialer, Windows live and facebook app.
I added custom PC-like Startup animation and Welcome, modified BootPackage 1.2 by Wajk.
Radio must be 1.59.xx.xx (1.59.46.12 recomended)
Dowload : deleted, too early beta!
PW : TomAngel
Thanks and Credits will follow...
Sorry, but Rom Version isn't 21016 but 23016

Hmm, no offense, I appreciate your efforts, but IMO it doesn't make too much
sense to release a language mixed up ROM before getting it fully translated.
However, I wish you best of luck with getting it to final stage.
Cheers, Olioaglio
Hi Olioaglio,
I think it is better to show, that someone is interested in releasing ROMs for the Polaris.
There are not many Devs left that release ROMs for our Device...
Android is nearby finished...
And all the others base on the same kitchen and build.
I am new in customizing ROMs, so all the beginning is difficult, and I want to do my best. Even there are 6.5 ROMs in German for nearby all the other devices, except our Polaris. And that's (Polaris) not as bad as it seems.
By the way,... I love your ROMs, I've tested every since Oct.2008.
Thank you for your great work, especially in releasing ROMs in my native language.
If you like to help me, it would be a great homor for me to get support by someone who really knows what he does.

Hi, I think that's right. I'm interested in learning how to develop ROMs with WM6.5 with the "new" Kitchen from Ervius/Bepe. In the past I developed some ROMs based on the old Polaris-Kitchen with WM 6.1. Cause I still have a good ROM based on WM6.1 I stopped developing new versions until now. Perhaps with WM6.5 I will restart developing. First I have to learn how to dump and how to build ROMs with the new kitchen stuff. Then the next step would be porting WM6.5 to language 0407 and then add some applications, Reg-Hacks etc.
You all know that's a long way for a lonesome cowboy. If there are many developers sharing knowledge it would be much easier.
Keep fighting...
Tom
Thanks
Thanks tomduke!
I think I did wrong releasing a ROM in so early beta.
But I'll keep on trying in a German 6.5 ROM, and in most times I finally succeed.
Nice to see that I am not alone... in whishing a translated 6.5 Polaris
Thank you
Hi TomAngel,
thank you for trying to build a german rom.
I´m searching so long for it. I hope you can handle it.
Dark Dragon
Every Cocker,**** a new Rom. I think, it´s the best, you translate a good WWE Rom for the first.
The Polaris is old and my pda goes to my wife when HTC HD2 is in the shop. And the last WM 6.1 Rom´s are realy good, fast and stable.
But when you **** a verygood WM6.5 German Rom for Polaris, you are TOP
hope still comming!
Development in process
Hi DreamCrasher,

I've built a jointventure with an other user to get a working Rom.
But the Release will not come under my name... But follow the threat, and I will announce a Release here.

Hi, nice that you like it.
Home Weather works because of Mortscript, it's still a bug of Manila.
In the case of the Theme, we will release one or two alternative CABs of Manila Skins to better fit for the girls !
Release is near, eventually at the end of the next week.
Build will be 23016 or 23081, SteveP86 is working on it!!!

Realease comming ...
Hi all,
release is near...
SteveP86 and I will release this German 6.5 ROM tomorrow in the evening.
There are still some minor bugs, but the others WWE have too!
There will be a few post installation fixes for some of them.
But I think we did our work for all the others
Stay tuned, release will open a new threat, link will be posted here...
@bugzbunny : If you like to move the startbutton to the bottom feel free to move it. we like it as it is. everyone should decide for it's own.

Windows 6.5 is here - what's new?

If you haven't heard yet the new TD2 WM 6.5 ROM is available: http://htcpedia.com/news/official-topaz-wm6_5-rom-upgrades.html
I like to err on the side of caution with these things but I know some will be wanting to get upgraded asap. So what's new with the ROM especially with TF3D? I know you get weather on the home screen but does TF3d run deeper as with the new Leo/HD2? Also are there any performance issues?
EDIT: Official Official ROM now available from HTC: http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=728&news_id=310
you sure
when i checked about 5mins ago (after spending all day checking every hour on the hour) it still shows no new update available for the touch diamond 2 to 6.5

compact v
isnt that the pure?
i thought that came with 6.5 already, but i think it will but not sure as they are more or less the smae phone spec wise, but i dont know if the internals are configured the same
Ive noticed ive had to make a few changes to my TD2 Tools application for WM 6.5. Here are the changes:
Enlarge Start Menu is now redundant as WM 6.5 uses a full screen Start Menu and in turn, HTC has brought back the Programs Tab in manila and got it working properly.
Most other settings have remained unchanged.

And a google search for 6.5 screenshots, all show this new Todayscreen with the slidable list. Where is it?
So what version of Manilla comes in this 'Official' ROM. Do you think this is the final release? Does it feel bug free? I'd love to flash but am chock full until the weekend.....

I didn't remove the memorycard before updating and it worked fine.
Just done, with card out....so far pretty smooth. Even picked up on my Copilot install once i put memory card back in
Now how do I rename my phone......
I think the interface runs a bit slower than the 6.1 ROM. Entering the dialer or an e-mail takes slightly longer (the phone sort of draws the the application to the screen instead of it popping up immediately).
Also, the Sense/Manila slider at the bottom (the tabs/icons) is not as smooth as it used to be.
Do you agree or is it just me?
i dont feel right about the so called "official 6.5 ROM" from HTCPedia, if it is really an official ROM, why up until now there is no 6.5 update from the OFFICIAL HTC Site?
it seems to me that the claimed Official ROM in HTCPedia is just a ploy for everyone to try it and figure out the BUGS themselves(they can just ask for beta testers directly and not like this)....what a shame, then HTC Folks will redo it addressing the bugs/problems being reported from public.
HTC guys are surely monitoring all forum site to get the much needed bugs/problem information from the so called "Official 6.5 ROM".
for me, that so called Official 6.5 ROM from HTCPedia is not final yet but in beta still since most if not all who flashed it complains of some bugs and problems with the psuedo 6.5 Official ROM.
I guess i'll have to wait 'till it comes out of HTC Support Site to be sure.....if not, then 6.1 works well for me....
BEWARE and be prudent.........

Yeah I'm not too impressed either. One example is the memory usage. After a reboot I have 49% RAM available, 30 minutes later I have 28%.
Will dfinately consider a cooked ROM to see if the chefs have managed to speed up the device.

Battery Issues with ALL 6.5 ROMs

I have tried ALL 6.5 ROMs
but it seems these have issues with battery drain
- whatever the reason, I don't know -
Battery lasts ONLY half a day - that too standby
You can actually see the battery percentage %
decrease every two/three minutes
and NO other software installed after flashing
(I flash Stock ROM then flash Cooked ROM then
I HardReset 3 times - please keep in mind)
- BUT -
I install Stock ROM 6.1 Professional - NO ISSUES
I install Androkkid as alternate UI
on the Stock ROM 6.1 Professional - NO ISSUES
I install other softwares like TotalCommander and
QuickMenu, Nitrogen for music, plus a few games
yet NO ISSUES
Some of these are good ROMs - Fast & Stable -
but ONLY & ONLY this battery issue puts one off
Is it only me or are there others in the same boat

It seems to be a procedure worth following

Hello my friend
Sorry dude - I tried this ROM too but the same story
Hi,
I've read all your posts that proves this forum is very fruitful and many members are here to help.
I don't know if someone shares me my opinion about unnecessary move to install 6.5 ROM. So far I've barely seen a good cooked ROM without major complaints like aaryaputra mentioned. I'm aware that it is good to change, but can't you use some shell software to change the look of your phone and stay happy?
It is just an opinion and frankly speaking, does the "start button" position deserve baring all bugs in the cooked version?
I use SPB mobile shell with the elegance pack, and it is adorable by all means. I know ROMs of new OS is very elegant even in functionality, but since the manufacturer himself doesn't provide an update (even with charge), I guess it is because of the expected degradation in performance.
Am I correct? Hope to see others opinion.

Welcome buddy to the forum yeah u r somewhat correct use some shell and be happy but then i or may be we all upgraded to wm because of two things... more userfreindly specially wm 6.5.x and new functionality like internet explorer etc.....

No offense to you my friend, i know you have been working day and night to make the roms stable and your contribution is unquestionable but do you think most of the users really care about IE 6 ?
All i can do right now is install Opera or other browser and call it a day, apart from that 6.1 is quiet capable OS and like i said SPB shell usually does the trick of making the OS as fancy as Apple (atleast that much i am satisfied)

There is always a counterpart of anything in this world so is here many really want ie6 and many dont, you know the real reason i upgraded my touch viva to wm 6.5 which i got newly was because of ie 6. And yes its true opera mobile is better (not 10 its slow compared to 9.7) but there are some particular site which will not open on opera or any browser in this world except ie thats why many commercial company still use ie. And about other things i like the look of wm 6.5.x i today just tried wm 6.1 again yeah to be honest it was fast but its gui and functionality is really worst. The same speedy rom i made with many tweaks etc for wm 6.5.3 latest build 23102 its as fast as wm 6.1 plus full features i love it... but again as you know i cant share that rom coz of that wifi bug. Since i do not need bluetooth so i removed bluetooth from my rom and now everything works but i think many do need that here. Anyways we had a nice discussion on this topic coz of this i resaw wm 6.1 and was successful in making much faster rom

See!!! you ditto my thoughts now.
1) You don't need WIFI and bluetooth, so you don't have it on your rom, but i cannot work without them, so i am sticking with Stock rom.
2) You like the functionality of WM: 6.5 so can't do without it. I have yet to find anyproblem with WM6.1 so no problems here.
Above mentioned points only prove that people here have different requirements of their phones, some people need lots of feature, so people need balanced and some people use it for only calling and messaging.
I'm quite happy with this discussion. I've been developing windows applications for 10 years, but can't deny that in mobile world, I'm an infant.
Besides the IE flash enabled browser, what are the most critical features that is not in 6.1?
Also is there any version of wm 6.5 that doesn't drain the battery? I'll be happy to accept recommendations.

No buddy you misunderstood me that wifi bug is only with the htc touch viva its not with any of the htc devices take elf which is almost same as opal but it has no problem but some people have solved it, iam unable so i removed just bluetooth others are working. Although i wish i had bluetooth too.
People need balanced one and calling i totally agree even i need but there is some prob while coooking thats why i dont share the rom which i use in my phone....got it? overall i can say that you can make wm 6.5 as faster as wm 6.1 or even better. Really beleive me i will try to make a video of how its working on my device its just lighting fast....

Beside IE 6 flash enabled browser wm 6.5 has some core upgrades and now we have 6.5.3.3 which which has more improvements. Wm 6.5 is more finger freindly, every thing just got more good like threaded email, more clearer fonts. And the best thing is it has widget support but right now we have very less widgets if you are interested you can develop some.
See i have attaches some images from build 23102, it has new font rendering feature.

Battery Drain
Hi There. I´ve been following the conversation and....
I have also changed my ROM from WM 6.1 to WM 6.5. I did it because I wanted a better shell without the neef of using SPBShell. I hope that I coud save memory and proccessor.
What did I get? Just the opposite. WM 6.5 has a lot of mem usage (6.1 averaged 40% and WM 6.5 60% without any application runnig) and I red thats the cause of battery drainning.
I tryed killing some mem proccesses with SKT Tools but it didnt work.
I thing I will change for 6.1 with a nice cooked ROM.

Okay with my experience till now i tell you the cause and solution of battery problem
1. Battery drains quickly due to more usage of resources, in wm 6.1 there is less resource to be used, no graphics that requires more ram. But its opposite in wm 6.5 and above what happens is in wm 6.5 and above there is large about of graphical components so gwes.exe most of you have probably noted with some taskmanager that this takes the most of ram, so it is large because it needs more ram to display the graphics.
2. Sometimes rom cheifs what they do is they use rom files as modules (okay it is little advanced for normal users) in simple words the battery also depends on the cheif i mean how they cook and what they cook cooking some type of files gives high storage but at the same time it consumes ram. Thus the resource.
Now the possible solutions
1. This problem yet to be clarified. But some temp solution are there one of the basic solution is use ur taskmanager and particulary the clean ram app. When u dont use any app close it it will save the ram (thus the resource) i prefer q taskmanager that is quick and accessible from any screen and some of my favourite are xtask but its little complicated at starting, but the best i would say is arkswitch can be accessed from any screen closes the app and istantly ram release is shown.
2. As One of the above mem said battery calibration
3. Due to more graphics more ram is consumed thus quicker battery drain so if we cant come up to the level of wm 6.1 then atleast we can come close to it. Like i have shown you one screenshot of getting 82 mb free ram in wm 6.5.3.
CatonElMenor I want your particular line to quote
What did I get? Just the opposite. WM 6.5 has a lot of mem usage (6.1 averaged 40% and WM 6.5 60% without any application runnig) and I red thats the cause of battery drainning.

So you say it consumes 60% ram, yes its true but and the same time the rom can consume less ram than wm 6.1 yes somedays ago i used phamquang rom dont remember the version in that only 60% ram was consumed. So i can surely say that its 100%possible that you can get up to the level of wm 6.1 or even better.
@All: All ppl's i know u are waiting for the rom but iam more impatient than you to release it so plz have little more patience. For me its 100% bug free rom (but u never know, people use there phone in diff situation so if there is a bug we will come to know eventually, for me as i said its totally bug free)

Congrats on your release bro
Nice one E!
downloading !
this rom sounds like just what i was looking for.
ill post again once i have it installed and running
thnx!
Can you post a mirror for the rom. It is messed up when i try to download it.
I will be posting a new link to download the rom on VBN soon.
I've tried the ROM and I'm sad to say that it falls in the "I've tried that roms already and it didn't work out" pile for me. This ROM has so much potential and I would use it on a daily basis but there's just too much things nagging me.
like why is there a Opera Mini 5 beta, Opera Mobile 10, Internet Explorer, and then the Opera Mobile 9.7 in the ROM in the Internet folder. why so much? Opera Mini doesn't even work. Just make a choice and put only 1 or 2 and save some space...
the HTC messaging client is the onler 2.14 which freezes on incoming sms....pretty annoying
I really like the sense theme though, quite elegant.
the icons in the start menu us quite the contrast to the nice looking homescreen. the icons are too bland....I would say get an icon set that goes along with the theme.
I have no idea what LMT is but it doesn't seem to work.
I don't see why the bing app is included if you already have the bing widget....however the bing app doesn't have any link to it in the start menu or anywhere else....saw it in program files.
again, nice rom, just needs some more work. looking forward to ur updated version

I gave all of them there so people have choice. They almost take up no space. Opera mini works for me. I would like to hear from others if Opera Mini doesn't work. Either way I was thinking of taking it off anyways since it seems to have problems with logins on sites. I really don't like Opera 9.7 but it offers multi-touch support I know others like that. I will try to get it down to two or thee browsers. It's just that they don't take up too much space. I plan incorprating UC So I can install then that way and users can uninstall as they see fit.
Messaging is getting an huge ugrade on the next release.
I am in process of going to using the Firestorm Icon Set with frames soon. Let me know what you guys think.
LMT is an awesome app once you know what is does. I will explain in one of my reserved posts for it. It is a multi-touch launcher in it's simplest form. Here is the thread on it to read up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629263
Bing Widget is going to get deleted. I didn't mean throw it in there. However the Bing app is under the Maps Directory.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Workign to make this an Everyday ROM that will run reliably if you don't like to flash all that often.
Didnt know where your ROM was until G posted a reply on the CleanEx thread..
...and yes there are two ways to go build a rom (atleast thats my take).
(1) Start with everything build into it and then filter out bad/useless stuff till you get a clean one
(2) Start with barebone and keep adding one or two things in every beta till you get a mature one
All the best mate !
Congrats on your release... This will make Tmous friends smile
@ nightryder21
Just dropped in to say welcome to the CleanEx UDT !!!

Keep up the good work..

I vote for the Firestorm iconset. It looks good
TY

what do you guys mean it doesn't work? doesn't start, doesn't let you guys sign in? please be more detailed so I can fix it.

@guybrush777 This IS the correct version I guess. It was actually a closed beta when it was released in June. I believe Jagan will confirm my opinion.
EDIT: I will post my testing reports in the appropriate thread to keep this one clean.

and I have just two problem here (ofcourse except MMS ) first in
start>Settings>Personal>Input when you go to optin part there is no way to come out either ok nor windows bottons work there.
and I can't find task maneger at top of page in today and also other place is this my problem I just can't find it?
No comments on Manila coz i haven't tested it yet.
But taskmanager, you couldn't find it coz its not there
My experience says, for windows mobile 6.5.3 default taskmanager or htc taskmanager = useless.
Install Arkswitch, the best one for Evo-Ultimate. Search the forum for it.
Good work in this rom
~ But the keyboard no are the ezinput

I've just downloaded the Beta and have it installed. Thanks for releasing your Beta. It's always nice to get a new ROM to play with.
I've installed the EzInput keyboard, Manila 2D v1.2 and ArkSwitch plus a few other minor apps. Will also post my findings here as they come up. So far so good.

Welcome, Glad that you liked. It will be great if you post the EzInput keyboard version you installed, see above our friend JoxeeM is sad
People! It is a very Lite rom. And it is a BETA!
-No Manila.
-No Ezinput.
-Original WM theme and icons. (It is very good)
-Stable only US region. (it is only one little problem for me, because I'm Russian... and I have programs, which are freeware only for russian region... )
(Original task manager you can find in "windows/taskMgr" and then create a shortcut in "windows/Start Menu/Programs")
I love this ROM, because there is only all necessary for work and nothing superfluous.
I can instal only that, what I really need. (PhonEx, SPB keyboard, Arkswitch, Core Player, Resco Explorer/Registry/Photo Manager.)
ROM very fast & stable. Very long battery life... That's all i need.
Thank you once again Jagan2!
