Hi all,
Has anyone seen the top side of the HTC HD2? I tried to see in the official website and also in youtube videos but think there are no notification lights like the HTC Touch HD. I find it very useful in the Touch HD, saving it from taking it out of the pocket and pouch.

Other than that, it's a nice device plus micro usb now read on BBC that they are going universal in mid 2010: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8323018.stm "The charger has a micro-USB port at the connecting end, using similar technology to digital cameras".
Mayb like the kaiser next to the earphone...
Like xmoo said, it is on the left of the earphone. I have seen two videos on YouTube where you can see a green LED which blinks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBlAjD4ZKr8 - here it seems to glow red permanently
i'd guess the permanent red glowing would be due to the phone being on charge
Very nice, didn't notice that in the videos! =) Thanks!
As I don't possess a HTC HD...what are the notifications usually for (red, green, blinking,..)?

The EU forced the manufactures to agree on one universal connector by (I think) 2010 or sth. . I think that was about 1-2 years ago. So if microUSB is the universal one, than probably every device will have that in the near future.
Just saying that, because it seems like everyone is kinda (positively) surprised that all the new devices have microUSB now =)

Blinking green for missed event (SMS, mail, reminder)
Solid green when fully charged and connected to external power source
Blinking red for critical battery
Solid red for charging
Off for anything else (i.e. it doesn't indicate signal reception status in any way)

was true on the HD as the light was on top, but since the HD2 has the light on the front, you still have to take it out of the pouch to see the notification.

Some people are surprised plus it's been a while. But I think this is great, don't need to carry the charger if it's universal when travelling also for those who read the news will know it will be very good for the environment.

You are right, unfortunately we will still need to take it out of the pouch now. There is nothing on the top, I would of thought a lot of people found that useful in the Touch HD although the led was very small but still useful

it wouldnt have helped if it was in the top, since the 3.5 output is at the bottom hence most people will have the top downwards

I do like the idea of having the output at the bottom which is what I wanted in first place (makes it harder for dust to get in when in pouch) but having the lights at the top should of remained because when you are listening to music you would have your headphones in and if there was a sms or call you would hear it in your ear piece.

It's a voluntary thing, which is why it's surprising - HTC loves ExtUSB.
Who cares about a dedicated notification light ?, the HD2 has illuminated buttons which could be programed to show notifications. Much more efficient.
That's nt red it's orange.
Orange on HTC means charging.
Red is low battery.
Hope just like the kaiser notification, we'll be able to edit the led colours as how we want them.

Hi! On another forum I was told, that the Touch HD has the LED for signaling missed calls/sms/e-mail etc. built into the power button. Does somebody have any pictures or a video of this in action? Just curious how this looks. Thanks!
Hi all,
I too would like to know this... and I also noticed that www.gsmarena.com says it has video out functionality???? But this feature is not listed on htc.com
Did anyone hear anything about this???
The guy of the frensh video on youtube was live on yahoo a few days after the release of the video.
While he was showing the device it looked to me that the on/off button was blinking or emitting light. At the time i didn't know what it was, but reading your msg i think this must be the LED signal.
So yes, it has a LED signal in the on/off button
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431850
check out this forum thread for the TV out stuff... at the moment it is unlikely that the phone will have this feature, like Raphael, because Raphael was the only one with the required USB connection... Videos show that no such port is on the Blackstone... still hoping though.
The DPad showing the status was a good thing as I got it in the cradle all the time. Having such function on the power button makes it harder to see, but cool nonetheless.
Wish they did it Blackberry style - placing a single very bright LED near the speaker hole on the front... Subtle yet rarely overlooked.
Hi,
Is their a way that the call answer|home|Back|Call End keys can be highlighted in the dark with say a white light?
That would be so cool when using the phone in the dark!
I guess it really depends if there's some kind of light behind the buttons?

Yes it is so stupid that I think a ten year old child designed it. They are impossible to see in the dark and often I press the wrong one and are almost throwing the phone in the floor in anger
I suspose a skillful "Mod-er" could silkscreen some glow-in-the-dark paint on an adhesive layer (perhaps as simple as scotch tape) and adfix it to the front. Who knows might even be a market for this. I'd pay $4.95 US for it.

A lot better without any additional lights, imho.
I like reading ebooks in the dark with the phone, and experices with other phones have shown that leds etc are annoying.
solution number one would be a sw controlled led system that could let you decide on/off, intensity, color, animation motive, strobosystem connected to audio output, blinking and blinking speed, for each key independently...
maybe i just exaggerated but what the hell since it's all impossible as the leds aint there i don't see why i shouldnt

You could probably use available GPIO lines (if any are not used) to control the leds, but modding mobile devices without some kind of blueprints is next to impossible It's unlikely there's enough space inside the HD to house the leds and wiring required for such mod.
just hold your hand below your HD so the light of the screen reflects onto the buttons, simple enough imho
The buttons are overrated. I hardly ever use them. The only one I use is the very left buttin for Voice Command.
And I am able to find the button in complete darkness!!!!
I wish they would be gone in favor of a bigger screen.
HTC wanted to illuminate the hard buttons, but couldn't. The strategy behind the touch hd was to create the first device ever that will totally disallow its user to obtain any useful information whether a call has been missed while he was away from the phone. Moreover, part of the strategy was to *make sure* no matter how much the community will try to correct this situation, that they will stand no chance.
For this, HTC went with a tiny, faint, green led missed-call indicator at the side of the on/off button, and to make sure nobody will be able to program a solution, they had to let go the illuminated hard buttons (since otherwise the community could have programed it to behave like the Diamond, and so it would have been possible to know if you missed a call). It was a compromise for HTC, but the manager of the touch hd product recently was quoted saying that they feel satisfied with this compromise, because they feel that sacrificing hard button illumination was well worth it if the prize is to create the very first device that can be 100% inefficient at showing the missed calls you had while being away from the phone (and no less important: is 100% bulletproof against any attempt of the community to disable this cutting-edge feature).

Actually it's 99.99999999999999999999999% inefficient, but in this situation (where you'll have to miss several billion calls in order to notice one) I thought it was safe to round it up to 100%.
Surely the simple way forward here would be through the use of quantum technology.
We know that there are no lights behind the buttons, but that doesn't prevent the butons being illuminated, because in another parallel universe some HTC designer might have accidently designed a useful and practical version of the HD (of course, this is where my idea falls down, as it's impossible for any HTC designer to be so forward-thinking).
Anyway, as I'm sure we all know, you don't actually need an object to exist to have an effect in quantum physics - it only needs to exist in theory to effect the time/space continuum.
So if we could co-ordinate a mass simultaneous experiment, where we all throw our HDs up into the air, and let them all hit the ground at EXACTLY the same time, we should find that we will have easily removed the problem of non-illuminating buttons for all those partaking of this exercise.
A small side effect of this is that we will also remove the issue of poor video playback, poor call handling, crap Today screen ..........
"Anyway, as I'm sure we all know, you don't actually need an object to exist to have an effect in quantum physics - it only needs to exist in theory to effect the time/space continuum."
Boy this is scary, if your theory is right, we could all be subjects of an quantum physics experiment. What if the HD in fact doesn't exist att all!? have you concidered that? If your theory is right, it could just be a flicker in the time/space continuum. :O what the hell, as long as it's persistant I don't care.
To the more real issues. Honestly, do you guys really don't know where the answer, home, back and hangup-buttons are located?? I had not even thought of the fact that they aren't backlit. Most time I don't use them at all, but I'm pretty sure most user here in fact can point them out in pitch dark if they had to. But I must admit the lack of light underneath them is a little bit odd from a design point of view though.
For the missed call isue, isn't there a way to make the screen backlight flash with very short quite frequent flashes to indicate missed calls? For those who check the phone for missed calls every other minute this could be a good med against hart attack (or atleast blue fingertip from pressing the power-button a million times).

I really like those side effects, only problem is that we'll also lose warranty, so if in the distant future something bad will happen to our beloved touch hd, we will not have coverage...

Impossible !!!, you make it sound as easy as typing on a computer keyboard without looking at the keys... why do you lie to us my dear friend when we all know remembering the location of the 4 keys in the touch hd is orders of magnitude harder ?

Well... you have a point... but in the other hand your statement is pretty contradictory in itself. My computer (a macbook, I'll probably get my ass kicked for saying that) has no backlit keyboard and has something like 80 keys so it sounds pretty weard that it would be easer to learn the location of all of them. or have you written a program that alters the location of the 4 HD-keys so you honestly can say that it's impossible to learn?

yes, but that doesn't disable the lights, so its not an answer to the question, but possibly the only workaround if not possible. i don't have a "naked" phone so i'm also not sure if without a case the trackball wouldn't be in the way of facing it down
i'm interested in this too as i'd rather have my phone face up at night vs. down so that instaed of having to grab my phone to disable an alarm, i can just reach over and swipe it down or snooze...
R
I run a clock on the phone at night. I got desperate enough last night to carve "endcaps" out off styrofoam to cover the lights...not very elegant, but works for now I suppose.

He said the lights keep his wife up, so I would think it is a solution since the light would be facing downwards and thus be much less visible.
I was going to look in to this since I already know how to control the leds via command line... but I would rather not re-invent the wheel.
Search the market for leds hack (put the s in leds or it won't find it. I believe it's also a protected app so make sure you're on a rom that shows it). Run it, select Nexus 1. Done.
The trackball led stays on at first but just hit the power button and it turns off. I know it says it only works for droid and nexus1 but I just tested it for you.

I put my phone on a dock, and it serves as my alarm clock. I like to be able to see what time it is, so turning phone down is not an option. Right now I slide the top of an old phone holster over the top inch or 2 of the phone just to block the LED.

Wow, I have to say I envy you guys who get to sleep in such dark rooms.
For the past 20 years of so I've been so close to bright street lights that even with heavy curtains something as dim as the LEDs on a phone isn't even noticable (much less be enough of a bother to keep me awake...).
It's one of the things I absolutely love about camping, getting to sleep in actual darkness.
I know I'm not offering any solutions here, just saying that if you can even notice the LEDs on the phone at night, be thankful that you don't have much light pollution to deal with.

The phone I just turn upside down though so it's never been an issue.
Luckily for me my wife hasn't said anything about my Hero keeping her up. But then again, I don't charge it while I sleep. My old phone had an LED all the way across the top of the phone and blinked every 15 seconds. I had to turn that one upside down or cover it with clothes.

I'm aware of the LED(s) under the speaker grill, but I didn't see a thing about the one for the optical trackpad.

There is ongoing discussion in the G2 forum about getting it useable for notifications. Its still (very) early days so keep your eye on the topic (will get the URL as soon as i can find it).

Hi!
I'm considering buying the phone, but I'm being put off by some things, among them inconveniently placed notification LED. Afaik it is in the power button, which quite sucks. So I'd like to ask what some handy alternatives there are? Probably something that would turn on the screen and it would stay on for some time?
Thanks
No one? How exactly do YOU solve this problem?
Got soldering skills? Buy micro led, solder it in front of speaker mesh, enjoy.
retsam88, it is better to be quiet if you don't have a reasonable answer.
The majority of us just don't consider this to be a problem.

Frankly, i never noticed if HTC Touch HD's led is blinking or not when you have missed calls/sms and have been using it for 2 years now. Only noticed it blinking when battery is drained. But you can use S2U2, which is a free lockscreen application and has the options of reminding you about missed calls/sms/emails by playing sounds at certain intervals.
Eh... is there an application which could be used to tweak the LED? Thanks
yes i have on top let blink for mesage mised call etc
