Telus is supposed to get the Hero on the new Telus HSPA network on Nov. 5. Do any of you devs know if it's gonna be able to be rooted, etc? I'm pretty sure these are the specs (link from pdadb.net):
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1966&view=1&c=htc_hero_us_htc_hero_130
It's the same as the European Hero, so it should be able to be rooted, given that HTC doesn't patch any exploits before shipping the phones to Telus.
i'm so stoked for this phone!

don't be..i am using a white European hero right now, and i can tell you the software is so disappointing...having flaws everywhere, searching apps is not working, searching bar in browser landscape mode is unusable, people are reporting missing text messages, etc. i am not sure how many sms i have lost. I hope HTC can fix these in donut update
i think you should wait for Motorola Droid or just get a iPhone if you are not so obsessed with android
well, im also using a white european hero, and im very pleased with it.
Ive been an iphone user since it was released (ive had both 2g and 3g) then the 3gs was released, and it was time for a change, so i considered the 3gs, but felt like it was time for something different, and i went with the hero... and i dont regret it at all...!! the hero is awesome..!!
Hmmm... well Telus mite have a fix installed for this. I had the iphone before too, and although there is a lot of good apps for the iphone, I hate itunes and other things about the iphone. I do love android and I think it is only getting better. I heard that HTC is working with android 2.0 so maybe we could have an upgrade coming soon?
well...try it to see if the bugs is still there before you buy..i wouldn't count on Telus to fix the bugs..make sure to let someone send you 20 sms or so to test it out once you have the device...
i'm still stoked. i'm gonna have to let you guys know how it worx out
google just released android 2.0 sdk!! so all of our htc phones mite just skip 1.6 and go strate to 2.0

Have you tried installing the 2.73 update? It fixes the issues that were in the initial ROM.
I can confirm that the Telus Hero is rootable. I'm rooted and running the custom Modoco ROM. However, I didn't write down the Telus APN settings before I did that, so I'm kinda screwed on data right now...

Are you saying that Roms for the European/Asian Hero can be flashed onto the Telus one without problem? That's a really great news.
So what method did you use to root? How is WiFi, wireless tether, market enabler, etc? I still wanna get one, I'm trying to get a deal from my brother-in-law who works @ future shop.

I did. Here's how it was written under an untouched phone (standard/vanilla android installation):
TELUS SP:
APN = sp.telus.com
Proxy = 74.49.0.18
Port 80
Username = <not set>
Password = <not set>
Server = <not set>
MMSC = http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS proxy = 74.49.0.18
MMS Port = 80
MMS Protocol = WAP 2.0
MCC = 302
MNC = 220
APN type = default,mms
However, I too am wondering how did you manage to root your phone. I'm fairly new to the whole android community, but after a bit of tinkering I realised I had a perfect SPL, making it harder to boot custom images.
Care to share??
Thanks

Wow, I've had a ton of people PM me about this. It makes me wonder if I'm the first person to ever root the Telus Hero. I kinda feel special, but at the same time, it really doesn't seem any different than what European Heroes require.
Anyway, here goes:
I used the recflash.apk method. The fastboot/usb method wouldn't seem to work, even after downgrading to 2.73.405 using the Gold Card method.
To summarize, I used this:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how...can-be-rooted/
then this:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how...-in-one-click/
The Gold Card took me a few attempts. One thing I didn't notice in the guide is that when you go through step 4, you need to have the same SD card in the phone as you plan to use as your Gold Card. (I believe the SD card I used was the 1GB Sandisk that came with my Telus HTC Touch 2 years ago.)
Good luck!
@bilange: Thanks for the APN settings. I got the "sp.telus.com" by calling Telus, which got me data back, and no MMS. He wouldn't give me the extra details, saying nothing else was required. I'll enter this data and try out some MMS.
EDIT: @dvice19: I haven't tried tethering or Market Enabler yet (I'm hoping that paid apps come to Telus before too long. I don't like the idea of hacking my market settings, after the vogue-android community had severe market issues when moving to Donut.) Bluetooth seems to work a little better with the Modoco ROM... smoother audio... but still not perfect. I'm hoping the Eclair update fixes all these issues, as my HTC Touch had much more stable BT. I haven't noticed anything wrong with Wifi yet... everything seems kosher. I installed Modoco's WaveSecure add-on, which works like a dream. All in all, I'm really impressed with the phone and Modoco's ROM.
Thanx craig0r! My Telus Hero is coming in the mail. Can't wait!

Note that I had these settings verbatim on my STOCK Hero, even with the sim card not triggered by Telus for usage yet. For what it's worth, the URL gives a HTTP error 404
EDIT: I just got back from my Telus store to fix my sim card not being activated yet on their network. Now that my phone is fully working (with an 'enabled' sim card), I can confirm that those APN settings I posted above are kept untouched after my phone synced (when it used my sim card for the first time) with Telus .
EDIT #2: Maybe it's just me, bot craig0r's URL are not well formatted, and I can't see a part of the URL (I see them as 'http://www.somethi......../ndex.html' ). Here's the full URLs in the same order:

All I can say is lawl. The forum backend automatically shortens them.
EDIT: Also, I can verify that MMS works with those settings, both outgoing and incoming. Although I had to call telus to get them to fix the incoming.
I still can't downgrade. I made a GoldCard and tried flashing 2.73.405.5 but it gave me ERROR[130]: MODEL ID ERROR.

Try using the Connection wizard??
I downloaded it, installed it, run it...but the drop downs for "Country:" and "Operator:" are blank.....
Have you soft reset first...usually the program will begin to find the settings automatically.
I did a soft reset, and nothing... It didn't start automatically, it still had blank fields when I opened it up, and I'm still not getting MMS's. Any other ideas?
I know your profile says Phoenix, but just want to make sure you aren't in South Florida, big T-Mobile issues there at the moment.
Nope, Phoenix

Its should do because on the box of the uk version it lists all of the countries that it works in and im sure NO will mean norway?? Email HTC and double check tho?
It does work in Holland
I bought an unlocked G1 in the USA last week and it functions perfectly in the Netherlands. The only thing you need to do is find your country code and provider code. With these codes you add your APN.
hey!
I'm in spain and 3g work fine, you only need to know the APN from your carrier

No problem, I bought the phone off Ebay.
I'm using the G1 with a Hello simcard. (Telenor network)
Both 3G and Edge works perfect. (I usually disable 3G because of battery drain)
The only problem I have is MMS. At the moment there is from my knowledge not possible to have two different APNs. And Telenor do not have a single APN (that I know of) that support both MMS and internet profile. From what I read this should be solved soon. (Then we can have different APNs assigned to different functions such as MMS, Browser etc...)
The APN I use at the moment is:
Name: Telenor
ANP: internet
Username: dj
Password: dj
I've tried several other combinations with the MMS server, proxy etc... but never got it working.
FYI, I updated my phone (orig US RC28) with the modified TC5-RC8 update found here. Keeping root and getting rid of myfaves and the US number format in the dialer. So make sure the phone you buy is Pre RC30 and don't allow any pushed updates from google.
Løp og kjøp!
First of all, I've got to say that there is more Norwegian guys here than I'd expected. I am used to being the only Norwegian (and sometimes Scandinavian guy) on forums like this.
Hilsen nordlendingen
What about special characters? (æøå)
APN for Telenor - solved
I finally sorted the problem with mms on telenor network. (Norway)
Here is APN parameters i use:
name: Telenor
apn: telenor
username: dj
password: dj
mmsc: http://mmsc/
mms proxy: 10.10.10.11
mms port: 8080
mcc:242
mnc:01
Others not listed are <not set>
With this setup both sending and receiving mms works perfect, as well as normal data connection for browsing/mail etc...
Love the G1

You just hold down the corresponding character and you get what you need. Hold down A and you can use Å , O gives you Ø etc...so no problem.
I am having some problems with the æøå support.
Sometimes when I try to use æø or å it mark the entire text I've written, and when I move the cursor with the scrollwheel I am left with either 'a' or 'o' depending on which character I attempted to write.
It happens in the browser, and sometimes other apps as well.
I'm from Norway too
Have bought a G1 on eBay, and it should arrive in a week or so.
Anybody got the APN-settings for Netcom/Onecall?
Hilsen Østlendingen
Just create a new APN,
(name networknorway)
APN : internet
MCC 242
MNC 05
works like a charm on onecall just so you know =)
Thnx.
Wrote you a message on androidcommunity.com but never got an answer.
Now I have all the info I need though.
Looking forward to using the G1 =]
I live in Norway and want the G1
Hi!
Well, now that Google is offering the G1 for 399$, I might want to pick one up. However, I see that its not available in Norway, (although Sweden is one of the lucky). I am considering ordering it to the US or Canada then shipped to Norway.
This should work out fine, right?
Yes, but you'll want to make sure that you have an unlimited data plan, or you'll find your data usage to be high. By limiting your data usage, you'll completely miss the point of the G1, which is really great for internet-on-the-go, streaming videos and music, etc
Thanks for the tip! Ive been looking for an unlimited data plan in Norway for ages, but unfortunately, they are horribly expensive here in Norway for some reason! Makes me mad!
Just ordered.. 264$ for shipping to Canada! What a ripoff! Laughable, but oh well..
The phone works in Norway, no problem...
In regards to unlimited data plan, it's not a must - but still nice. My data traffic is about the same as my last phones. (nokia n82/ htc hermes setup with push mail etc...)
The wifi works great with the G1 and I usually use that when downloading off the market etc..
I do miss some good maps (auto routing) to go with the gps though...
How about Norwegian keys, such as æ, ø and å? How would I be able to use them on the hardware keyboard? Are they mapped to fn + [keys] somehow, or are they handled as special symbols, or what? I guess the G1 has no Norwegian regional settings, or anything?
Kind Regards

They are built in natively. Push and hold "a", then you'll get a list. It works for other key varients also.

Hi.
I've used many, many APN settings over the past 6 or so months, and on top of living in a valley and get really bad data inside my house my APN setting weren't helping matters I've came to realize. If I walk 2 or 3 doors up I get 5 bars and 3g or H getting over 5 MPS. Since I've used these settings, I always have at least between 1 and 3 bars in my house and constant Edge with 3G on and off. This is due to my new APN Settings. With ANY OTHER APN setting I used I would barely ever get a bar in my house and I had to end up putting money on my Fring account, and I tried Truphone too.. they both worked great but I don't want to pay an extra
$10 or $20 a month to make calls from home. With these new APN settings I don't need , (fring, skype, truphone ect..) anymore. Here are the settings if anyone wants them.. Remember, these are for the HTC HD2, running android, T mobile USA PERIOD.. Just Tmo US.. nowhere else..

On your phone go to Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access point names. Once you are there you can edit an existing APN if there is one. If not, press Menu and then you can choose to add a new APN. After you enter all the info for your new APN, press Menu and then save. Great Advice!! Walked me thru perfectly, and I don't even know what an APN is
Good Job
First off let me say I've been searching EXTENSIVELY on this issue.
I'm in the US on T-Mobiles HTC HD2 (obviously).
When I purchased the phone it had already been rooted (I believe that is the correct term). It was running winmo 6.5 along with Android on an SD card.
I haven't had the phone long but I've learned so much from this site regarding modding and such. I can NOT send MMS messages on Android (I believe I remember sending one on Winmo). I don't have a data plan and I've tried every single APN I've found. Still nothing.
I recently flashed my phone with the new MAGLDR. I used "MDJ_Revolution_HD_v._2.2_NAND". It runs pretty smooth.. Except no mms capability =(. I've updated the Radio to the most recent. 2.15~ (I think).
I've read that possibly it's the ROM I'm using. Like I said I've been searching, please bare with me on this question, but I'm a little confused on what a ROM actually is. From what I've read everything I've found is a "winmo" rom. I beleive the rom that came with my phone (note: it came from someone else, its not stock) is Energy? It's a blue logo at bootup.
Would I have better luck with the MMS if I flashed to another rom? And if so, how would that affect my android? This site is full of information and sometimes it's hard to sift through what I need and what is extra. ANY help on this matter would be greatly greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I didn't know that you could send an MMS without a data plan. Most Android builds won't send MMS over Wifi and without a data plan. Some of the new NAND builds have MMS working over Wifi.

My old Nokia would send good quality MMS without a data plan so I just assumed this would be the same. If you think this is the case then I suppose I can stop beating my head against the wall.
Thanks

I have tmobile W/O a data plan, but I have unlimited texting. I send MMS all the time. (Tmo had to work untill 2am to get it working on all 3 phones, though.)

I knew it! How did they get it working?
There were three phones on our family plan and none of them would send/recieve MMS. I don't know what they did to get it working, however, they sent information from the cell towers to the phones repeatedly until all three phones worked properly.
2 things u need to check out is to fix the problem,
1. (Boot Android) if u are in roaming area u need to go to your settings go to wireless and networks then go to mobile networks (NOT MOBILE NETWORK) and simply click on the checkmart data roaming to enable data tranfer over roaming coverage and then go to Accesspoint names and clik on the one avaliable. ( you should now be able to send and recieve MMS messages or send them over your network.

No sorry that wasn't it..
It turns out I needed to use a SPECIFIC APN if I didn't have a data plan. It was wap.voicestream.com and then the other stuff. I don't remember it. It works now!

Thank you

The MMS should be setup as follows:
1. Settings --> Wireless and Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names
2. The APN should be named "T-Mobile US"
3. Edit that or create it and the settings within should be:
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: 216.155.165.050
Port: 8080
Username: (leave this blank)
Password: (leave this blank)
Server: (leave this blank)
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50
MMS Port: 8080
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: (leave this blank)
Once done, back your way out, maybe reboot the phone for good measure but shouldn't be required. To test success, send yourself a picture message (mms).
Hope that helps
My Streak actually had two entries for APN's. One as above, and one called T-Mobile MMS

Thanks, but that one never worked. I heard that was for if you HAVE a data plan, seeing as how I don't I was able to use this one:
Name: mms
APN: wap.voicestream.com
username: mms
password: mms
MMSC: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050
MMS Port: 8080
And it works now!
Ok update: Now all the MMS I receive are very very small. 4KB~ Average. Any Ideas?
New Problem
I have all the MMS Settings set up properly. The onlu problem that I have is...
I am able to send picture messages aka MMS Messages ( I am on an unlimited messaging plan and hence the picture messages are included)
However I have problems downlading and viewing them.
Lets say my friend sends me a picture message ( a .jpg file) It shows me in the subject that there is an attachment but when I try to download it (first it doesn't even automatically downloads it when I have it set up correct )
the error message comes up " Unable to download message from __"
Can anyone help me ? I don't know how this issue started. I only remember that MMS messages used to download by themselves once before.

OK, this is dumb, but try this...
Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks
on the drop down list select T-Mobile MMS. Then, Edit. Tap & Hold on black dot T-Mobile MMS, Then Connect.

change the APN used for the Internet and toggle the moble Internet on/off
Hey guys,
I was using andriod for awhile via SD, then I switched over to a NAND install of it.
On any install of Android I've used, I've been having problems sending / receiving MMS.
I have the following APN settings plugged into my phone, but obviously something is not right with them.
Can someone who has Android running on their T-Mobile US phone that has MMS working please chime in and let me know what settings you have used.
I've search and found several variations of the settings, and I've tried every one I can find but nothing is working so far.
Here is what I currently have :
NAME : T-Mobile US
APN : epc.tmobile.com
PROXY : 216.155.165.050
PORT : 8080
USERNAME : none
PASSWORD : none
SERVER : none
MMSC : http://mms.msg.english.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS PROXY : 206.155.165.50
MMS PORT : 8080
MMS PROTOCOL : WAP 2.0
MCC : 310
MNC : 260
AUTHENTICATION TYPE : none
APN TYPE : none
Like I said above, I've tried others settings that are simular to my current ones but nothing has worked so far. I as well tried calling T-Mobile to get the APN settings from them, but they will not release them to me over the phone for whatever reason.
My 3G is working great, and I can send/recieve normal text messages. Just the MMS is not working correctly (pics, video, sounds, etc).
Thanks for any help
edit :
on a side note, it would be nice to know what each setting is for. where can I find that info at?

well first of all, this should be:
MMSC : http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc (not .english.)
MMS PROXY : 216.155.165.50 (not 206.)
and on my data connection at least, i dont need to set the proxy or port for the apn (the two above mms, i just leave them blank)

proxy is 216 on my phone. typo in my OP sorry.
However, the mmsc was wrong I guess. Changed it and things are working now.
Realy blurry mms pics though....
MMS
This is due to tmobile not being able to identify the phone and because of such is limiting MMS size to 2kb or something? I am currently looking for a fix to this..have not seen anything. Thankfuly the pics you send are recieved in full resolution
i belive you edit: root\system\etc\mm_property.conf and change: "wapprofile=(whatever its set as)" to: wapprofile=http://www.htcmms.com.tw/Android/Common/NexusOne/ua-profile.xml
the wap profile is what your provider uses to identify what device your using and resize the images correctly for your device while in transit.

Thank you for this info
I was having the same problem, I entered the info you provided and now I'm able to send and receive mms.
thanks again
Ok I have found where to put this info but how do you pu the info there?
Here are the files to push to the phone, use adb shell.
Forewarning, this may not work, not because the files are incorrect, but because other then these files being there during initial setup, they dont always take.
I recently switched to zip roms (Using Clockwork Mod) which gives you the ability to change these files in the zip rom before flashing and loading to the phone. So far its the only method I have found to work.
But your all more then welcome to the files.
I dont remember which post I got them from, but no credit goes to me other then attaching them to this post.
These files fix the MMS re-size problem, the blurry pix sent problem, the recieving size problem, Picture size options: 300, 600, 1024, And all the APNs possible for near all phones.
I'm a noob so how do we do this step by step!! Thank in advance. I am running the zip Jaws-MIUI.

Take the rar you just downloaded and unrar it, after unraring it zip the files using rar and compression using store mode. name the zip update.zip, go into clockwork choose update.zip, and it should install the updates from my understanding.
In this form, it just may install and work correctly. post back with results.
I uploaded it and still nothing. I can send a pic to everyone except this certain person who is on att network.
