Hi Guys,
I recently purchased an HTC Magic, a great piece of kit. Updated to 1.6 when the update was available.
I now want to root it but found the method of using the recovery flasher and the associated guide (http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/) no longer works for 1.6.
So the question is, can I downgrade to 1.5 easily (note I'm on Vodafone not T-Mobile), and if so how?
Alternatively, I did identify the following guide, but not sure how compatible this is with my model:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream/Magic32B_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Anyone have experience of rooting this model from this provider?
Cheers in advance.
I used universal androidroot to soft root it,
then installed Rom Manager and ASTRO file manager from the Market.
Then flash recovery image in Rom Manager and after that you can either update your Radio+SPL or just go ahead and install GiO's Froyo 2.2 ROM from here:

I just got my Hero today not noticed that under the "Locale" all I have available is English(Indonesia), English(Vietnam), and English(Malaysia). This gives me the impression that I am running an Asian version of Android.
I would like to change to the world wide english version, however the ROM I downloaded did not work (RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe). It kept giving me an invalid carrier ID I believe. The phone is completely unlocked.
I then tried to install MoDaCo's 04/11 2.9 - MoDaCo Custom ROM Core. When I tried installing the patched recovery image when I did the 'fastboot-windows boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.2.3.img' it gave me an error and wouldn't let me go any further.
I am currently running:
Firmware Version - 1.5
Baseband - 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
Kernel - 2.6.27-8dd6dee [email protected]
Build - 2.73.728.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
Software - 1.0.0.A6288
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
I have also the same set with same problem. Cannot change the ROM. Anybody did it? guide us please.
I just did that yesterday, exact same issue.
Follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683
Works like a charm!
I also downgraded my ROM to 2.73.405.5 using the method in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683 but I did not used the QMAT for reversing cid instead i used http://hexrev.soaa.me/. One of my SD card did not work so I used another one and finally I got it worked.
Now I have non-rooted ROM (Origional) and I am little bit hesistant to root my phone. Is there any advantage of rooting the phone. I changed my ROM just to get rid of Chinese and get the android app market access.

Hi, appolgies for being completly stupid, If someone can help me i will be very grateful!
I have an orange network locked hero. After getting tired of waiting I attempted to debrand by installing the generic HTC rom ...
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver
With the idea of installing and letting the OTA update occur...
So i installed goldcard tool created and image. and then installed the htc image.
2.1 is now installed but have the network locked message.
I considered trying to unlock via one of the vendors on ebay, but decided it probably wouldnt work so decided to roll back to the orange rom.
By mistake I ran this update which i believe is the HTC 2.1 update
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed
Now when i try an run the orange uk 2.73.61.66 release I am getting an error message 140 bootloader version error.
The phone isnt rooted, is there any way I can roll back or unlock 2.1. Am i going to have to call orange an confess?
Please help!!!!

There is a STICKY at the top of the G2 Hero Development section called Villain Roots 2.1 RUU,.. tried that?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
By doing this would it allow me to reflash the original orange image?
Sorry for being dim, finding all this a bit confusing!
root it via that guide, put in a radio that works with orange sim cards, and you should be good to go
Use this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
Once done you can reflash the original official orange release.
Apologies for being thick...
So I have gsm root running, phone in recovery. What do i do next?
Do i have to flash the rom on using nandroid - never used this before.
try this method - its easier
tinyurl DOT com/3242ljv
you'l need to remake the link as newbies cant post links
Tried the simplified version.
When I try and run the zip file it says it cannot open the file and says it is bad.
Tried a couple of times and with both orange updates..
Arghhh!
Try using a different SD card - hboot couldn't find HEROIMG.zip on one card, tried another and hey presto!
Well in the process of trying to get the orange 1.5 build back on i have got 2.1 working!
Tried flashing an older radio on there and gues what it works. I've now got the standard htc 2.1 build on an orange uk contract, network locked handset.
Quite pleased with myself!

Hi,
Please could you give us the radio version you installed, and how you did it. You'll find the version under Settings > About Phone > Software information > Baseband version.
Many thanks,
The radio version i'm using is
update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15-signed
I tried the one before that also which worked.(Basically I started from the oldest one and worked my way up)
I tried the two most recent ones first and these didn't work (Network Locked)
Hope that helps
I've noticed Orange have started rolling out the preupdate, think i might as well stick with the htc build.
Cheers
PLEASE HELP...
i have unlocked and debranded, using RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.66
im still on 1.5 how the heck do i get to 2.1 ? i don't have the option to update software and the udates on the htc site are older than what i have? confused
i dont think its possible.
i mean if it was, people would have mentioned it, with threads dedicated to updating to 2.1
although i do believe these threads may be onto something.....

i hear the search tool finds even more, who knows
Change your date to about a month forward and you should see the update (if your provider has released it).
O wait you're on a generic rom. Maybe change the rom to an official from your provider and then wait for the update.

sorry my poor English
choice 1: download offical update of 2.1 from pc and install it directly
choice 2:hack your device, but a little complex make gold card(gold card is a special tf card which have some codes and program that could approve you to flash any custome rom ) how to make gold card you could look up some information,I have some chinese information, but I think it's so difficult for you to read them.
If you have root,it's more easy, download rom, press home+ power to get into Recovery ,use recovery to backup your original rom, then wipe all ,and then flash your new rom, reboot system.
some device will notify you to update rom,but official rom i think it will forbbiden you root your device,it's not convenient. using the modified edition is recommended.
I used the Goldcard method my my 3 UK Hero then loaded the official 2.1 ROM downloaded from the HTC website. Very simple to do, as said you can also have a look for Universal Androot and go down the root path.
Hi all,
I recently purchased a DHD for the wife from ebay and the seller claimed it was new and factory sim free.
I already have a factory sim free HD so I knew what to expect.
However, upon turning it on, it boots with a Vodaphone logo and is full of Voda's bloatware.
The seller has obviously just unlocked it but not bothered to debrand it.
It has been sim unlocked as it accepts my T-mobile sim fine.
What's the easiest way to get a stock htc rom on it?
I don't know if the seller has already used goldcard to sim unlock it?
It does have 2 dubious looking files installed on it that are not on my stock DHD:
HTC Function test Program
HTC IME Test
Both of these have unofficial-looking icons
The software build number is:
1.39.161.1 CL278886
Thanks for any help I get
You can just root it using visionary with that software version, once rooted look in the android development section, there are two one click tools for s-off, run them both, once s-off, you can download rom manager from the market and flash cwm recovery, then you are free to install a custom rom or a stock like rom..... or you can make a goldcard, and then flash a generic htc ruu. I know the first method looks complicated, but its alot easer than messing about with hex editors making a goldcard

Thank you.
I've done it now.
It was easier than I thought it would be but it's all thanks to you.
Hi,
I have a locked HTC Bell Legend, which as some of you might know is now upgradeable to 2.2 via an OTA update as of last week.
The problem I'm having though is that my phone isn't seeing any updates (gives the "your phone is up to date" popup when I check). I have tried rebooting, going through wifi, using *#*#checkin#*#*.
Does anyone have any ideas or know of a place I can manually install the update?
Thanks for any help.
You can either root your Legend and install a custom FroYo ROM or go to the following website and install the Bell 2.2 rom.
http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped/Legend/
Thanks!
I've never installed a ROM this way before, can someone point me to a helpful guide? I searched around a bit and didn't find much.
EDIT: to clarify, the links above are to the official Bell 2.2 ROMs, but doesn't have the RUU. I can't find any resources on how to install an official ROM release without RUU on a locked phone.
make a gold card, download the htc 2.2 world wide english edition update, with the gold card in your phone runt the update, it worked for me i installed 2.2 a month ago without rooting my phone. I have also sim unlocked my phone.
when its done put in the apn data for your carrier and your good.
addition to first post:
im also with Bell.
email me and i will send you the link for the one step gold card.
I *do* get the update, but it fails because I removed some of the stock apps.
I've been trying to find the APKs for these (yes, I know, I should have made a backup).
Does anyone have, or can point me in the right direction for getting these apps back ? In particular the stock (DCSSTOCK.apk) and twitter apps.
Thanks,
Rob.
You can switch the rom.zip inside the ruu with any other official rom I think. If you don't want to make a gold card.
