I just wondering if you guys has the similar problems with me or not ....
I've done registry hack for changing the default storage of rings to \storage card\rings, occasionally the ringtones will automatically change back to "windows default". I've check that my O2 mini able to play the selected tones. After a while, when i suspend it or soft reset, it will change back to "windows default".
Does anyone has this problems ? Is this because of my SD card speed ? I got a 256mb Kingston SD which is included from the package.
Your help and comment are appreciated.
Thanks
Ringtone back to default
If you installed pocket player.. try to uninstall it...
Hi,
You dont need to uninstall pocket player. Just go to pocket player options and remove the file association. This should solve your problem.

Vishal
hi... i dont have or ever installed pocket player but hansip's problem is happend to me aswell... anymore idea how to use our own ringtones without have to copy them to the windows folder?? thank you
I had the same problem...
and the solution was not to change the path to \storage card\rings...
instead.. you have to make it \storage\....\Rings and this will certainly work  .....
I believe there is some sort of conflict when you choose Storage Card
I know you won't be able to use all of your music... but at least you'll free up some memory from the RAM..
and if you have the BigStorage trick.. you'll be just Fine..
I have three ring tones in my Rings folder.. and I think that's enough for me.... 8)
cheers
After coming out of suspend mode or after a soft reset, the Magician needs some time to initialize the SD card. Since the programs, including the phone settings, are run before the SD is initialized, the Magician cannot find the ringtone on the SD card and therefore resets it to windows default. It does not matter wether or not you have a fast SD card, it is a flaw in the operating system. That is also the reason why today plug-ins are better run from main mem or internal storage than from SD card. Try putting the ringtone in your internal storage, you'll see the difference.

just hold the stylus on the music file you wish to make as a ringtone, until you get the pop-up menu, then choose Set as Ringtone

Not really. First of all you need a special .cab file for that, which you can find attached at the end of my post.
Second, that just copies the ringtone in Windows/rings, thereby taking up valuable RAM, which he wants to evade.

Thanks for the input guys .... I solved this problem by changing it into \storage\rings instead of put in on \storage card ..... Well I guess, the reasonable explanation for this is because when the phone rings, the device is trying to access the rings into the location that we specified in the registry and i guess the process get too fast .... So the device having a difficulty reading the \storage card ... and that's why it straight goes to "windows default" cause of course that's ring store in internal memory
By the way I'm just curious what's cab file does Koksie provide us ? Could you please explain more on this cab files ? What it actually does for our Mini ?
Thanks again guys for the input.....
I am having this problem after swtching directories too but it is not fixed after changing the registry to /storage/rings, /storage/.../rings or even windows/rings. They all go back to the default ring!!!
Please help !!
Thanks!

The cab file will enable you to set mp3 as ringtone when you hold to the file.

What software do you have eg.. phonealarm, spb, etc, it may cause the error
The .cab I posted enables an extra option in the pop-up menu when you tap-and-hold on a mp3 files. Use the build-in file explorer, go to the folder where your ringtones are stored, tap-and-hold on a ringtone and in the pop-up menu you will see an option "set as ringtone". tap on it and the ringtone will be copied to windows/rings and set as your default ringtone in the phone options. Only drawback: the ringtone will be copied into main mem, taking up a lot of space if you have a full sized mp3. If you shorten it to 10 seconds and decrease th quality, it should take up less space. I have no idea if hacking the registry to make storage/rings the default ringtone location will work with this .cab. Maybe the .cab only looks at the registry for the default location and copy it there, maybe it just always copy the file to windows/rings.
I have all the sbp software- pocket plus, weather, gprs moniter etc.. also all the PHM software- but this wasn't happening when I instaalled that stuff- it happened after I changed the ring directory-
I have tried chaging it to everything- and it still goes to the default ring!!
thanks,
Daniel
Not only that-
The defaultt ringtone seems to play thru the speaker regardless of whether or not the headphones are plugged in- please tell me I don't need to hard reset!!
Having the same problem here. I have changed the ringtone directory to be
"\My Documents\My Music\Poly" (the same registry hack).
Now, whenever I change the default ringtone to something else, it is done. But when an incoming call is received, the old windows default ringtone is assigned as the ringtone.
HEEELP...
I did a hard reset and it fixed the problem of switching back to the default- I recomend tht anyone who tries this registry hack make a register backup to revert to- soething went wrong-
anyway- I am still having the problem of the rington laying out load when I have the headphones plugged in- is this a standard flaw??
I don't remember having this issue when I first got my Magician...is there a setting to change???
Thanks,
Daniel
I'm also experiencing problems with this but was bale to move the things to the Storage. However, during my experimentation in Photo Contacts, when I do a preview, the default ring tone does not play.
not possible!
hi... according to some ppl that replied to my question (exatcly same with this tread), the answer is WE CAN NOT put ringtones files in SDcard and use them from there.. even we edit the registry.. it works when we preview them, yes.,
BUT
during standby mode, and some1 call us, the window cant find the ringtone fast enough (coz they are in SDcard, access is slow!) so they use the default one..
try to edit the registry to /storage (instead of storage card) then it works. but ofcoz, u must copy all ur ringtone to /storage, now u r using xda memori, not sdcard
dont try to buy faster sdcard, i dont think that will work.. the fastest sdcard is still far to slow for xda... but i any1 success, let me know like you, i have hundreds of ringtones and i dont want to put them in storage...
I found another solution for the problem
I haven't tested the suggested solution while i am writing thsi post (too excited)

Selecting Ring Tones from your Storage Card instead of \Windows\Rings\
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moving Ring tones to your Storage Card.
Ring tones are choosen from \windows\Rings\.
However, you have to copy your ring tone files there and that takes up
valuable RAM Memory.
Wouldnt it be better to choose your ring tones from your Storage Card, better
still you can place hundreds of ring tones on your storage card without taking
any RAM at all.
Here is how you can do it.
You will need a good file explorer software like "Total Commander"
from http://www.ghisler.com/
1. Run Total commander
2. go to \\ (at the very top)
3. open \\\registry\HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring \Directory
4. Change the content of this file from
\Windows\Rings to \Storage Card\Rings\
Note: \Storage Card\Rings\ is the directory I created on my storage Card to store my personal Ring Tones.
To select a new ringtone, Start->Settings->Phone.
The Ring tone are now selected from \Storage Card\Rings\
and Best of all, your ring tones doesnt take up any valuable RAM Space.
I hope this helps
Merry Xmas all,

My first post in this incredible forum, I have all ready found so much help here and are most thankful, please keep it up.
Is it possible to make your own message sounds and use them when recieving text messages etc.
If possible at all what format should the file be in (mp3 wav)?
Tried with an mp3 placed in the windows folder it seems it cant find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not an expert so hopefully one will reply, but I think they have to be .wav and I think they have to go in the \windows\rings folder.
cheers

Actually, you are 1/2 right, they need to be wavs, but they go directly into windows, not in the rings folder.
Steve
Yep steve is correct the sound file will need to be a .wav and place into the windows folder, ring tones can be mid,wav and so on and they are placed into the rings folder within windows.
Sound file converter???
Morning all,
My first posting also and yes this has to be the mecca for knwledge of all Wizard related things. My question:

You might try Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It's a free download. I use Sound Editor in Roxio's Media Creator 8 -- one of the MANY useful tools in that program.

YW -- (but I'm a GAL -- not a guy)!! LOL!! But, that's ok -- none of my friends can believe how "techy" I am, either. But, I'm the first one they come running to with a problem. Go Figger!!
Cheers all,
You keep refering to ring sounds, I am looking for Sounds for alarms and recieved messages, and alerts in general.
But I will try it now with wav files in stead of mp3.
Manindesert,
I'm using Sound Forge 7, but then again I really need it for all my music stuff, so give Audacity a shot.
Update Works fine with alarm and message sounds, thank you all.
Is there any way, hack or otherwise, that will allow you to point your rings/sounds to your SD card? Thought it would be nice to free some space and stop having to move files on and off the card. I change my ring tone with my mood
Javahater,
I've been loking for a hack/program/setting that will do that, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, all SMS & ring tones must be located in main memory!
But there's a possibility to create a program that will browse a folder of ring tones on SD card & once u select a tone, it will be copied to main memory (and of course erase the old default tone from main memory) & will set this new file as the default ring tone for the phone.
Javahater and Ezzkht,
Maybe you should look here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks scroll down to this "ANY FOLDER RING TONES"
You will need a Registry Editor like Total Commander 2 or PHM Regedit
Hope this helps
Javahater,
Have been trying above solution for about an hour, seems that this solution doesn't work under WM5, or at least it doesn't make any difference if you change the folder or not (it only points to windows not windows\rings)
Will have to keep looking.

AGREED !! I've got WM2003SE tried the steps mentioned http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks no use.......it still picks up the default folder from \windows\rings, where as I am pointing it towards \Storage Card\Sound\ not working
ok just double checked.....in sounds and notifications options it goes to \windows\rings folder.....but I have o2 plus installed as well...and in o2 plus sounds and notifications options it points me to \Storage Card\Sound any ideas ?
Ezzkht,
Happy t worked for you, can't say the same for me.
Well it is getting more and more weird, when I look in my registry it only points to \windows\ not even \windows\rings\, despite this it still manages to pick up ringtones/sounds in the rings directory, and all sound files placed in the root of the SD Card(go figure).
I'm out of ideas right now, but am still looking for a solution and will be back if I find one.
I just used Resco Explorer with the registry editor add-in.
It worked with me without a soft-reset!
What device do you have, Mike?
Maybe some nice sounds
Hello everyone!
It's a little bit off topic, a little bit not
My advice: SD card is not really a good place for sounds, at least in my case. Why? Sometimes it happened that when I got a phone call, instead of my nice ringtone I've heard the standard one. I think it has sth to do with powering up SD card while changing from standby mode. It's just my impression.
Secondly: I'm looking for some nice SMS ringtones, not the funky ones... I'm getting a lot of messages and it's really boring if you hear "Heeeeellooooo! Your message is coooooomingggg!" every now and then. I will appreciate if you could share your ringtone with me
TroLoo
I have some mp3 files in my storage card.
I am aware of software line mRing , Ringo etc. but is it possible to use mp3 files as ringtone from Storage card WITHOUT using 3rd party software ?
Any registry settings to change the ringtone folder from main memory to storage card ?
also, whether or not the above is possible, what is the best mp3 ringtone solution WITH software ?
thanks...
Well I just realized something. But is this normal ?
If I put the mp3 files in the root directory or in a 1st level directory, I can see them in Ringo sotware and but I can't see them in default contact ringtone selection.
If I put them in a 2nd level directory I can't see them from Ringo and default ringtone selection screen.
If I put the files in root directory I can see them both in Ringo and default ringtone selection screen.
is this normal ?
If you search the forum, you'd find that you've found the answer to your question. Now if you need an explanation of the solution rather than the solution itself, please contact Microsoft.
hi,
so you mean it's normal behaviour ?
I don't need an explanation of the solution.
what I want is to be sure that I'm not doing something incorrect or I don't miss something.
btw, I had searched the forum before opening this thread. There are so many threads about mp3 ringtones.

Yes, and I'd be cautious anyway. Having ring tones especially anything not in a vanilla wmv or similar format can slow up time it takes for your phone to start ringing. In addition storing the file on storage card makes this delay even worse and finally can cause phone to crash on incoming call. Not saying this will happen to you but if it does you'll know why. Once you have it set up test out delay until first ring and response time from off/sleep.
Mike
well, I decided to use "mring" as ringtone manager on my Hermes.
I would just pay for this great application but I found a problem with Hermes.
If I use mring , I can't connect to my GPRS connection after disconnecting.
To re-connect to GPRS I need to reboot the Hermes.
This means I just have "one" time connection to GPRS (for each reboot of the device)
If I uninstall mring, this problem disappears and I can connect to GPRS each time I try.
So ,I think there is a conflict with mring and GPRS connections.
Can anyone confirm this ? Does this work for anyone ?
What else can I use as an alternative to "mring" ?
hey guys, I am really desperatly looking for ringtone managing software.
please advise...
You can also put them in "\storage card\My Documents\" and they'll show up in the default ringtone manager but as mikechannon said, it takes a while for the ringtones to load. Like it'll say incoming call, then ring 2 seconds or so later.
What i do is i put all my ringtones in "\Storage Card\My Documents\My Music\Ringtones\" and then just copy the one i want as a ringtone to "\Windows\Rings\" and when i want to change it, i'll remove the one i have there and replace it with another one i want.
well, that's a nice idea but mring was also adding features as "ringtone to contact/category/know caller/unknown caller" , "sms to contact/category/know caller/unknown caller"
it also has "vip" settings for contacts marked as vip and it has profile support like (discreet/loud/normal...)
I am also looking for such features which the OS itself does not include.
so I am still looking for alternatives to mring.
any idea ?
The stock rom from T-mobile had the ability to use my MP3's from my sd card but the new OT prog doesn't have the ability. There's a couple tones on there but nothing that can wake me up. What and where can I put my MP3's to get the alarm to use them? I've tried searching but nothing.
Also, does anyone have any obnoxious and alarming tones to recommend?
usually under /Windows folder. just paste it there and see if it show up. i am having problem with doing this with Ranju 7.7 ROM on my Unversal device
tried that and under the Sounds folder under Windows. Neither. Anyone else?
Yet another thread I can't get help with. lol This forum doesn't like my questions.
You can take any mp3 or whatever and clip it or use the whole thing and just convert it to a .wav file and put it in the window folder. As long as its .wav it'll show up.
actually i tried it and it didnt work maybe to big? 8mb.. but there is some software out there that allows you to use mp3 and from sd, search for Gentimer or spb timer, that wha i have used .... btw O.T. 3.0 has nothing to do with your tones OT is a ROM
I know OT is a Rom but why is it on the stock Tmobile Rom the mp3's worked as alarm tones but now that I've switched to OT, denied?
Hi all,
I am using Elfin for past 4 months.
Earlier i used to put my own ringtones in folder "/Application Data/Sounds" and they worked.
But for past 1 month, no external ringtone put in "/Application Data/Sounds" is working. whenever i set my ringtone through Settings->Phne->Ring tone, it automatically sets it back to Ring-WindowsMobile.
I tried putting ringtones in /windows folder. but still i can only see those in Settings->Phne->Ring tone list and not able to set it.
somebody please help

somebody please help

Hi Kaplesh Patil,
1. Did you install any new softwares in your device after which this issue came.
2. Did you check your .mp3, .amr, .3gp, .mp4 file extensions and properties.
3. How do your rip those file. Do you use any specific software to do it.
4. If possible can you attach one of your not working file.
Hi HDR87
1. I keep on installing softwares. so its difficult for me to guess after installing which software this problem has started
2.Did you check your .mp3, .amr, .3gp, .mp4 file extensions and properties
???? what do u mean by check, i mean how to check.
3. i usually rip .mp3 ringtones by SoundForge. but what i am saying is all same files used to work fine before. but now they have stopped working.
4. Even built-in (factory) .mid, .amr and .mp4 also not playing with WMP.
5. to aggravate my problem, now even built in ringtones like Ring-WindowsMobile have also stopped ringing
It sounds to me like you have something you installed that is causing conflict. You will have to try to figure out what it was that you installed- Try by trial and error remove an app you installed see if it works and so on. Start with apps that are related to the devices audio capabilities - I have read about several people having problems with SRS WOW application.
Note that if you installed an app that created a Registry change, it is possible that even uninstalling the app may not change the Registry values back to normal and if this is what has caused the problem than only a hard reset would work (unless you can figure out which Registry values you need to change and what you need to change the values to.
Sorry I can't be of much more help; however, if you figure out that it is a registry value change and you figure out which values need to be changed, just let us know which ones and we will check what our values are set at so you can make the changes manually.
@ hotrod101
I am currently exploring my registry... If i figure out the values to be modified, i will share here, so anybody having similar problem might be able to use it

Dude - you shouldn't be hijacking other peoples threads to ask your question. Use the Q&A Section and start your own thread or even better do some searching. This question has been asked before and even made it into the hall of shame.
To answer your question: If you are going to put a song or a long sound to message tone the whole song or tone will keep playing until it reaches it's end. (it's not like ringer wich is instructed to end as soon as you answer the call. Don't use a long tone or song. If you want to use a song, make sure you edit the song to make it just a short clip of it.
