Hey guys,
Few of you in the cyanogenmod irc room the other night might have recalled me totally bricking my t-mobile mytouch by pulling the battery after a reboot... dumbest thing I have ever done. I consider myself a fairly knowledgeable linux geek, but unfortunately I panicked and did the worst possible thing, pulling my batt and completely bricking my phone.
I was installing the 4.1.999 cyanogen mod. Phone was so toast it wouldn't charge. Status led's wouldn't work, it was 100% toast. Fortunately I was able to have it replaced and would like to try again in a day or so.
Here is a video showing exactly what I did, please excuse the length of the video it goes from start to finish, backing up and flashing everything, up until the point where I pulled the battery. I'd love to know what I did wrong, so I can try again!

Ok, here's what you did wrong:
The first steps are good... You've installed the 1.6 update, then applyed the cyanogen rom... After that I've seen that it was installed a new radio... That might have killed your phone...
At least that appears to be the problem... But why a new radio was installed, no idea... (I don't think you did it on purpose)...
the phone you have there is a magic not a dream. For a start that dosnt help!! Other than that i think yiou have put Dream radio on the device, It not being a dream is the problem as when it detects its the wrong radio the phone goes into a safe mode where it wont turn on to save breaking it.
HTC might fix it under warranty as they did me but it WILL come back with perfect spl on.I have flashed the wrong radio on 2 phones yes 2! now i learn from my mistakes Oh and when/if it gets fixed and you bypass perfect spl, You cant put any ROM Other than donut based ones so no hero takes the fun out of flashing
All bricks I've seen are because you guys install new( in most cases wrong radio- from different phone or MotherBoard version) or changing SPL (exception: people with perfect SPL). I'm asking WHY you do this , WHAT FOR ? Putting different rom /rooting etc does NOT require changing anything and is simple as bread and butter, and you CAN'T damage the phone !! Sorry to see this I'm not 100% sure but it looks like you have flashed with wrong radio. As my predecessor said I think only HTC can fix it... To all people DO NOT TOUCH SPL AND RADIO IF YOU JUST WANT TO PUT HERO ROM OR ROOT THE PHONE (exception ppl with perfect SPL)
i accidently flashed the radio for ION on my 32A last week. got my phone fixed under warranty thank god. but i got the perfected SPL.
if you do get the perfected SPL, you dont really need to change your SPL to flash stuff on your phone.
just replace your recovery using the recovery flasher apk a.k.a the one click root.
reboot to recovery, flash a new ROM that is rooted.
then using the adb shell method, flash a new recovery permanently to your phone.
i have had no issues using that method since i got my perfected SPL.

after applying the 4.1.999 update you pressed the trackball to reboot your suppose to hold the home key while its rebooting on that step till the mytouch screen shows up also you need to wipe the ext. redo the last step then the my3g should be fine in other words reflash the cyanogen
u install wrong recovery
Install instructions for an HTC Magic (32B ONLY!!!)/ION/MyTouch3G
Same as above if you are using CM-Recovery 1.4.
OR
Same as above EXCEPT step 2
Download HTC ADP 1.6 DRC83 http://www.androidspin.com/downloads...ooted_base.zip
*You have to manually reboot MT3G and hold home.
he can use the ra recovery image it works because i used it on mine
Turns out I used the wrong recovery image before doing the cyanogen flash.
I followed this guide on my second phone (swapped out my old white one for a black mytouch) and am running 4.1.999 right now - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4666075&postcount=282

Here's my problem:
1) I had rooted my phone in the past.
2) I need to do a warranty return for a bad touchscreen and keyboard
3) I'm unable to flash back to stock because the home key is "stuck", so I can
only boot into recovery mode.
Is it possible to brick the phone so that it get stuck at the T-mobile loading screen before it default boots to the recovery screen?
If so, what is the most reliable way to brick my phone when all I have access to is the recovery mode?

That would be my first choice as well... except that I can only get to recovery mode, even when I hold down the camera button.
Closest thing I can do is flash an update.zip

That's what I was thinking... I figure I'd just use my phone as-is until the replacement arrived, then I'd flash it back to stock before returning it...
If it's just a bad touch screen, they'll replace it without much fuss for next to free (just $10 shipping). Which is a very fair deal... unless you rooted your phone (boo!).
Then the home key got "stuck"... what bad luck... It's obvious when you turn it on that it's been rooted because of the custom recovery image... I'd rather make it a bit harder for them to determine my warranty's void instead of just having to turn it on.
@coolbho3000: I noticed that a boot.img file is included in some random update.zip (JFv1.3_RC8.zip) I just downloaded... Any idea what to hexedit on it to ensure it'll brick if I do an update through recovery mode? Or should I just pull the battery during the update (many times if need be)?
Update: I tried randomly screwing with the boot.img file using notepad++, but the damn phone won't use it for the update because the digest failed during the verification process. I also pulled the battery out during the part when it says it's writing the boot.img file (twice) without success -- although in this case, 'success' would be a bricked phone.
Why is this phone so hard to brick? Others just look at their g1 and can brick it...
I managed to brick my phone! It was harder than I thought (well, considering my many failed attempts), but here's how I did it:
I downloaded haykuro's 1.33.2005 special spl, renamed it to update.zip, and updated the g1 with it through the recovery panel. It's now permanently stuck at the T-mobile G1 screen. Worked for me, YMMV.
If that didn't work, my next two ideas were:
1) Very powerful magnet... high power speakers, or something else that puts out a lot of EM radiation (I'm sure I'd think of something). These things must have a low tempest rating.
2) Microwave (but that smells like desperation)
Hope this helps others in the same boat. I'll update with the bad news if they do, in fact, figure out I had rooted my phone anyways. I'm sure it's possible, yet probably unlikely. Otherwise, no news is good news.
Be glad you didnt have a custom spalsh image lol

Pretty simple. First do a recovery to factory settings using the camera and the start button. then copy the latest SPL from this website,
in the instructions it says that you have to flash the latest radio first, don't do that, just flash the SPL... reboot, voila, you have just successfully BRICKED ur phone..

Magnets don't emit electromagnetic radiation -_-;;
A much easier way would just be to take a moderately high dc voltage (say ~48v) and fry part of the processor.

You didn't have to hard brick it like that you know. There are other ways which will convince the warranty people just as well. Now it's really bricked.
hmmm well this was my idea....if my phone ever goes wrong or sumthing.... i will just crack the screen lol. so they cant see if what software was on my phone...
the easiest thing to do is flash the danger spl before flashing the radio if u havent flashed the Danger SPL already. If u did, just flash an older SPL. That should do the trick

So if you have the danger/haykuro spl and want to downgrade that spl for w/e reason the phone will brick??? or are you trying to tell him to downgrade the radio?

If you use Haykuro's "Danger SPL" and will try to downgrade the radio, it should brick the phone for good.
Even if your camera button is broken you can still get to fastboot through ADB. Just open an adb shell (doesn't matter if it is recovery or not) and type:
#restart bootloader
and voila - you can get into fastboot mode and flsh whatever you want.

thats dumb as hell cuz if u crack ur screen u have to pay $130 deductable well at least in USA and if u send it back with out telling them the screen cracked u get to pay $370 restocking fee but ifd u just brick with spl u get free replacement just pay shipping which im about to do cuz my phone was ****ing up and i got replacement sent(20 bucks shipping thats it) but magically i fixed the phone but its rooted and fully working again so if new phone is PVT board then im bricking my phone and keeping new one.
I need help
Hey people I have a cracked G1 screen and a rooted firmware, I want to get a free warranty replacement by saying that the "Update Failed" and act like a total idiot to the tmobile people..
I also have Haykuro's latest radio and latest SPL, can someone give me clear guaranteed instructions on how to brick my fine cracked friend?
Oh, and I also want to make sure that the TMOBILE people cant go to cyanogens 1.4 Recovery image after this thing is bricked, so AANNY help would be appreciatede

Grab the RC29 file, name it DREAIMG.nbh, and flash via the bootloader. Since that will downgrade the radio to the 1.1 version, you will no longer have the 1.5 radio that 1.33.2005 requires
This has got to be the funniest topic I've read in awhile.
Good luck to all you seeking bricked phones. Haha.
So, I have just made a couple of changes to my phone. My mistake is that I did it all at the same time. So I dont know what fu***ed it up !
1. I formated the ext2 partition to ext3
2. I added a linux Swap partition (104Mb)
3. I loaded the CN 1.4 Recovery image
3. I installed the SPL 1.33.2005
I have been using JF 1.51 and I was having some issues after a recent corruption so I thought I will try JacHero 1.7 since I was planning on a clean install anyway. So the new SPL was for the Jachero rom.
Anyway, why i think the issue happened while flashing the SPL its because after I flashed the CN Recovery screen came up and it said "Formatting Cache" and it stayed on that screen for like 15 min. and I thought ok, it must be done and the Recovery menu was active so I just scrolled to reboot after which I was never able to boot past T-Mobile G1 screen.
I did eventually update to JacHero 1.7 after a wipe but still didnt seem to work. Still stuck at boot screen.
Any ideas ?
Any help is appreciated !!
Thanks.
If its the spl I know that one if I rem was the tricky one that couldnt be downgraded or so.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517593 is the only thread on top of my head I can link you to. Hopefully it helps.
Sometimes the only way the danger spl will take is if you rename it to update.zip and click on apply sdcard update zip. Try doing that and see, also try a non hero rom and see if it boots, if it does and a hero won't chances are it was the spl
ITS WORKING !!
So I kept on messing around, I went into the SPL settings pressed lots of keys (not much clue wut i was doing) and I tried a couple of restarts and after messing around with everything.......somehow it booted into the new Hero rom (Dont ask me how !) but it was completely screwed up. Meaning, This HTC screen is the only thing I can see. If i turn off the screen and turn it back on, I will see the unlock screen of Hero (which looked really cool) but as soon as I unlock im back to this wierd HTC black screen where nothing happens!!.
Soooo I went back into the recovery mode and tried the nandroid restore option (AGAIN) only this time it went through and completed the recovery ! (It wouldnt do that the last 3 times i tried) and now I back to my JF 1.51
Not really sure if I still want to try Hero anymore
and thanks alot guys for your quick responses......I REALLY Appreciate it.
Thanks again for your help !
It's up to you, cyanogen just came out with donut in his expermental line of roms so now we are gonna be passed cupcake roms soon
Hey there guys...
So I ****ed up. I flashed the Danger SPL for WG's build of cyanogen's rom and then selected reboot. I wasn't aware you needed to flash a rom after adding the SPL but now I'm stuck with the "T-Mobile G1" screen and it will not boot into recovery.
I hold the Home key down when I boot, nothing. I hit Home, Menu & End keys at the same time and it won't even reboot. any tips? Sorry I'm searching through the threads now for help. Thank you!
No, rebooting is fine. You didn't have the correct radio, which you should have had since 1.5. You can either get a replacement from tmo saying an update bricked it, replace the motherboard or buy a new one.
the radio was wrong?
I had the 26I radio I believe
Its of no help, but I am curious.
why flash DangerSPL for a rom based on Cyanogens ?
I didnt think you needed DangerSPL for that rom ?

you dont need too lol but some people do it just in case they want too flash a 2.0 or hero or 2.1/hero lol... but for the OP if you had the 26l radio then the spl was okay to flash does it boot up to the mytouch screen or does it do nothing I think its camera and power for the G1 to get into fastboot try that and see if it turns on
Take out battery for 10 seconds. Press Back button several times. Put back battery. Boot into recovery mode.
Well...
took it into t-mobile & just received by replacement phone yesterday.
How hooked up is that for xmas?
Brand new G1 running super smooth I love it

Great! What was your explanation to them?
a similar question has probably already been posted
i have a tmobile hd2
i successfully hardspl to it
i flashed the energy reference rom
then i realized that i needed to use the task29 tool before
i flash any rom... did that, hard resetted, and then tried flashing again (energy referecne) using the sd card method
and i just get stuck on the "NRG" screen
tried the other custom ruu method getting the same results
using the radio 2.07.50.27
i put back the regular spl to flash a stock rom but still no luck
i know the phone isn't bricked i can get to boot loader, hard reset
any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance!
Thanks!

ok as from my knowledge you dont necessarily need to do task29 if its ur first time flashing (cuz i didnt and i got very good results) so i think u messed up in tht part.. but its ok, now you prolly want to first --> do a task29 again... second ---> get the nrg rom and flash it.... third -->get a radio of 2.10 or higher and flash tht....and just to play safe flash everything using custom ruu (i got better results using them...just saying)... also when u do each flash and its suspenseful dont boot up the phone, just take out the battery and back into bootloader.
hope this helps... report back lol
^thanks man
Okay so heres how it goes, my phone is def not bricked
custom ruu has only worked once for me
now whenever i try to use it it always gets stuck at 8%
i found that if i flash it at night and hard reset. wait til morning and turn on the phone
then it loads past the nrg screen and into the OS.
i'm currently trying to get it back to stock and i downloaded the tmobile update
but it doesnt seem to work, it also keeps stopping at 8%
i disable the anti virus stuff and i plug it in to the back of my computer
sounds like a defect
sorry to bust your bubble bro but it sounds like you got a classic case of a defective leo, i too did the same steps you did and it turns out my main board wasn't any good and the phone kept overheating, turns out when flashing custom roms they tend to put more pressure on the snapdragon then a regular stock t mobile rom. i know this sounds crazy but i believe it to be true, so with that said you got two options, one get back to t mobile customer care and get a replacement. or do what i did and find a repair shop and let them know that your leo either needs a new mainbaord or a new heatskin like mines did, it cost me 80 dollars which wasnt bad since my leo was a gift and i couldnt give it back to t mobile... hope that helps in some way
p.s. sorry for the edit but if you cant do either of those of what i suggested, try this get yourself a nice icepack nthe size of your phone and mount the leo on top of it whenever your using it, so that sucker wont overheat. once again i hope i helped
Hi, after hours of researching to find the problem, i cant find it so as my last resort i will ask the mighty forums if there is anything they can do about it.
The problem is that its stuck in a boot loop, i can get in to bootloader and Hboot.
When i press to go in to recovery its just goes to the HTC logo and stays there.
When i try to do a factory reset same thing happened.
Anyway, the facts.
Its a DHD it used to have leedroid latest as rom, atm i have no idea it is supposed to be 1.32 stock rom for rooting and RADIO-26.14.04.28_M, kernel was also leedroid recommended but i guess that also is 1.32 stock.
It was ENG S-OFF but then i tried some PD98IMG and it changed to SHIP S-OFF
Things that i have tried.
Tried different PD98IMG to get the recovery working but nothing same thing happened there.
Tried patched/flashed the recovery part only with no luck.
Tried to get into recovery through pulling the battery inserting the usb and then inserting the battery again, no luck.
The odd thing is when i try to charge the phone and the led goes orange and when i pull the usb out it stays orange, it should turn off.
I suppose i ****ed something over but i have no clue of what that is?!?
Help would be most appreciated
I'm suggesting everyone to give this method a try although i have no experience with it but since it can be used to recover using computer i believe recovery isn't necessary here so that you can recover the firmware using the PC.
Hope this helps

Done and failed, same problem no difference what so ever.
SHIP S-OFF is OK!! U got it m8!
If you want to use your own Image do it within this way:
1. Flash this: http://www.multiupload.com/FKJ8B7Q0QM
and after this:
2. Flash this: http://www.multiupload.com/AURLLESU5V
And enjoy it! I don't know why the PD98IMG is not working on your device so I recomend to flash the RUU. Within the RUU you will also get the latest firmware for phone and wifi and so on. It's not a need, it's a must!
The 2nd ROM is same as above but it's ROOTED and contains the 4ext Recovery which will give you the option to flash whatever you want.
BUT!!! This ROM's are ORIGINAL. If you want to use a CUSTOM ROM I would recomend you will format your device by the 4ext Recovery or you are using the FULL WIPE 1.5.
Regards!
Sorry for the insane delay.
That did not work either, anyone else have any idea what to do, installing through PD98IMG.zip files seams not to work, will at this point do anything.
I'am a student so buying a new one is out of the question.
I tend to have to see things to understand them more. Maybe other people are similar. Is it possible you can video the process, put it on YouTube and some of the experts here can see it and talk you through it?

Dude, I plus 1 this comment.

Well, i am here again with some videos this time, dont really know if it will explain anything but here goes nothing.

Here is where i go into fastboot, just to show that i can do it and then back again to try recovery, same problem...
Anymore info you need, next time i will answer much faster, anyway there the problem it gets stuck on HTC logo forever, no restart no nothing...

when you flashed PD98IMG.zip does it give you a cid error?. If this is the error then a gold card needs to be made for your device first, then you flash the RUU.
Back again.
No CID error, its skips something called TP when i try to flash it.
I can use any simcard, its an unbranded phone i believe.
And also if it is to any help, when i plug my charger in the phone and then back out again, the little orange led keeps emitting light, as if it stills charging.
My English is not very good.
I want to know what did you do for it before its stuck in a boot loop?
You can get into HBOOT and connect the phone to the computer, then try to run RUU.Before you do this, make sure you have make golden card.
Try another pd zip..i came across a few corrupt ones, the answers in this site somewhere alterbatively google the sentence you want the answer to..or the key words,if the systems still working theres a 98% chance youll get it going boot loops from what i see are just a file or something causing chaos..once its gone voila.
Good luck
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Enter hboot and paste exactly what it says in there.
SHIP AND ENG don't matter as long as it's S-OFF. If you can't access recovery and if you're unable for some reason to flash a PDimg, download AAHK and use it to unroot. That will hopefully get you into the stock ROM and S-ON of course.
Use AAHK again to root. You will still have access to your stock ROM.
Now here's the tricky part. If the phone won't boot at all that probably means there's nothing to boot at all. Happened to me a lot of times. If you can still get into hboot then don't panic. See if AAHK will help you out.
