Motoblur from Motorola Cliq 0.76: Android for Vogue - Touch CDMA General

Oct 18, 2009
loserskater uploaded a new motoblur 0.76 build with some fixes. it's up at vogue-hero.
Oct 8, 2009
I uploaded a new motoblur with working data. Create a new motoblur account with whatever username and your gmail address. If you want to login to your google account make sure to use the same user name/gmail you used for your motoblur account. This is a beta test so have fun. Use it like ion. You might want to use the hero resolution. I haven't tested any others. Call/sms/audio/fxcamera all work. Haven't tested gps or bluetooth. Make sure you turn on animations.
Here is a video from Drizzys G1 port. Ignore some of the info about sdcard/wifi since it doesn't apply to the Vogue Port.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJhqxcpUK4o

How is its stability and speed? Appropriate for everyday use?

Aaaaaaaaand downloading. Any issues you've noticed right off the bat?

use task killer to kill of some apps that load up at start. other than that it's runs like regular cupcake builds. sms goes through fine. calls work. speaker phone. in call volume. it might need the audio hack to get the volume a little louder. camera should work but not tested. if not i'll bring over the pulse default camera because that actually works.

So far this is pretty effing sweet!
I've noticed the keyboard is a little laggy, sometimes it hangs for a sec, causing doubled letters or mistypings. It could just be that I have a slow SD card though

nah it's just the build. i'll tweak some stuff tomorrow and put out a beta2. picture gallery/video gallery hangs so those are getting replaced.

ill see what i can do as far as getting some of the pink out later
EDIT: wrong thread lol, for the pulse

oh, n as far as resolution goes, i've got it goin at 240x320 @ 120 lcd.density..most things seem to work s'far.
I'm finding power (end button) no workie..just me or known issue?

Damn, I'm running at 320x480 with no lcd.density entry in default.txt
also, I have no power button action either
PS: This is awesooome! Totally revitalized my interest in the Android Vogue projects. Keep it coming, Zen, you rock.

Confirming BLUR at 320x240 on a Kaiser. Only shtick is that without wiFi, I can't resolve the setup process.

I like this so far. anyone using it on kaiser? also I get the error message about invalid number

the trick is to auto enable mobile internet in your default.txt. do you have that? or do you rely on wifi?

Running MotoBlur at 480x320 with backlight at 120 on Sprint Touch. Does run a little sluggish though, but still going through setup so it might just be during this time.

From mobile-review.com:
The DEXT makes use of Google Android 1.1 operating system with MOTOBLUR tacked on top of it.........
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/motorola-dext-en.shtml
So it is android 1.1? :-(

how to power off?

If you push the menu button, you have access to network configuration (APN and wireless conf).

The Mototrola builds expect a seperate button for power on/off instead of using the red phone button. The hardware key mapping may need to be adjusted.

I will confirm that it is working on my kaiser quite well actually I have gotten a few force closes mainly voice stuff.

is it possible to run this build without connection?

I'm really liking the feel of this, the status icons on the desktop are cool (facebook, etc..)
Making calls is kind of challenging, face hits the hangup button, and screen won't power off in a call. Some hangups, slow downs, and the lack of a power button.
I'd like to see this one further developed though, i think it has potential.
Thanks Z!

Some froyo findings (BUGS / ISSUES ETC.)

looks like no FM radio for us for now..
multi-touch still snaps axis (obvious hw fault), but i can no longer get it to swap axis, can anyone confirm ?
flash works ok~, flash elements seem to lag behind when scrolling/panning the screen (kinda like they are overlapped, not really "embedded" in the render cycle.
is the launcher smoother or is it placebo ? either way launcher PRO is much faster anyway.
-- ( LauncherPRO works fine with FROYO still blazing flast, but the google search widget just gave me a crash after "acting up", never cared for it anyway )
new taskswitcher GUI, now says "recent apps", and fades out the background, displays more than the default 6 apps.
gallery is MUCH MUCH faster at loading photos ( i have around 200, and it just swept thru those thumbnails), ZOOMing in has better resolution, still not 100% quality.
new gallery PINCH-to-peek works great, looks very animatish too
another placebo to check, WiFi seems better, i just connected to a router that usually disconnects me allot because its too far, works ok atm, 1 bar.
power control widget now allows switching to auto-brightness (thx mortzz)
multi-calls from same person now grouped in contact list/recent calls
power button ends call
come on, share your findings
the stock messaging app is quite different. shows pictures of the contacts for each message. and... its white.

So LauncherPro does work with 2.2, no problems? I was curious of this.

Based on previous mods all it should do is give apps like Missed Call , Missed Reminder , Gmail Notifier access to trackball.
I dont think youll be able to set them from base OS.
can anyone help me why my installation keeps getting aborted no matter what I do?
i found no way to set trackball notifications, looks like they left that for us developers/modders to tinker with.
perhaps a non-root trackball notifications app is possible with the new SDK

From my experience, you will need a ERE27 to update to froyo
Can anyone explain what pinch peek for gallery does?
Noticed that any pictures you posted on buzz will pull up in your gallery. I reformated my SD card trying to get the app to sd card thing working and since i don''t have photos (yet to move it back on there) i figured that cool feature out.
Looks like moving to the SD card is something that might need to be enabled by the apps.

wishlist for this phone...

i love this new phone and new os but some things are really annoying and i hope they will be fixed in a future software update
no custom ringtones and no seprate volume control for ringtones this really sucks cause if i turn down the game or music volume it turns down the volume for everything.
playing a game like need for speed and hitting that stupid search button will kick u out of a game ur playing.
setting wallpaers u cant set a full wallpaper u always got to crop the image first i hate this.
no turn by turn directions for maps.
the dialpad and message theme kind of sucks i hope this can be changed
i would like to be able to set a wallpaper for the main screen just not the lockscreen
headphone volume output need to be way louder
the phone tile when u miss a call or get a message would be cool if it would show u who u missed a call from and if u got a text message it would show who text u and half of the message or something like that kind of like what the me tile does when u post something new
putting contact tiles if it would show messages and misssed calls alerts on there tiles that would be great
the top menu bar should always show battery lift signal if u get a txt message etc.
improvment on loading time for games etc..
cant think of anything else i want changed right now
other then that i love this new os i been using iphone since the 2g iphone and this is just way diffrent i also use a android device
I'd like more options within text messaging. I'd like the ability to initiate a call from a text message, and the ability to add a contact from a text message.
I've been a Windows mobile user for quite a while, and made a switch to Android, now to Windows Phone 7, it's great, but I agree with everything you posted, but adding a file explorer it a must. The ability to select or hide different photos that show on the picture tile, an option to hide/show the keyboard while typing (so you can see the whole screen), and the ability to turn on/off wifi, Bluetooth from the main screen instead of digging into the settings each time. Plus a few more settings, like wifi rules, (turning off Wifi automatically after unused, if you like). It would also be nice to be able to remove that little white arrow in the upper right corner of the main screen, it takes up so much real estate on the main screen. Landscape mode on more screens would be nice too.
Oh, and the option to remove an account, I already have a Windows Live account that I don't use stuck on the phone. I don't see a way to remove it, and cant' change the email address or log in id info, only the password.
I'm sure updates will be rolling out to resolve some issues, or possibly apps.....??
surround
you can just add a second windows live acccount and disable the first one by unchecking everything effectively disabling it. I wish you could delete the main one too. However, I posted this somewhere else, the phone got corrupted and after i did a hard reset and connected to my computer, the Zune software restored all my programs (in the backgrouind without my knowledge) and all was good again. There are some bad reveiws of this phone on youtube, but some of the reviewers got it all wrong. For instance the screen resolution for movies is EXCELLENT. It takes the zune software a long time to convery and copy some movies but worth the wait. There are some bugs and some things could use improving. I would say the one thing that bugs me the most is when you zoom in on a net page...the text could be sharper. But I can live with it. All in all the phone is a pleasure and I look forward to the updates.
Thing i dont like about video watching is Netflix over 3G is good quality.. but youtube is crap over 3G. There NEEDS to be a setting for this. Its just a hub extension, but hopefully something gets fixed.
A lot of your suggestions are for the OS, not the physical phone.
It would be nice if the OS could utilize the awesome speaker on the phone a bit more. For example, speaker phone is pretty weak. I also dislike how if the speaker is not slid out, everything is muffled. I guess they expected the sound to reflect better, but it just doesn't.
That's really all I can think of besides the lack of a microSD slot that's visible anyway. I'd take my phone apart to see if there is one, but I don't have a torx bit small enough.
Besides the OS limitations, I think the phone is awesome.

I second this. One of the things I miss most from my Tilt2 and all other winmo phones have been the blinking notification light.
Need more from microsoft
I want to be able to block unwanted call, more options in the settings menu and better functions for the camera.
definitely need to be able to explore the phone. more wifi options would be nice as well. also the speaker seems to be a bit lacking. ( sure thumps when i hook it up over the cd deck in my truck though!) I had the htc tp2 prior to this and i became completely addicted to the wifi router utility, so for me personally that would be the most important thing. if anyone knows about anything like this under development let me know. i'm always willing to donate to a good cause.
One of my teens got his old LG upgraded to a Surround for Christmas yesterday. I'd been thinking when my Tilt 2's upgrade time comes this summer I'd do the same -- but not after spending a frustrating afternoon helping him with it!
We played with it in the store several weeks ago. I think the slideout speaker is a gimmick but he's 16 and thinks it's great. We both agree the WinMo 7 tile thing is a bit silly but is FAST, and he loves the HTC Hub UI. The hardware is very good (though I'm not sure I agree with no micro-SD slot).
But using Zune software to sync is a PAIN!!! My Vista laptop took 1/2 hour to download the device drivers, then insisted on a reboot before downloading the Zune software (another 20 minutes). Then the Zune install insisted on checking for an upgrade (yet another 20 minutes) before going thru a rather painful 10 minute install.
Once installed, it was very unhappy when I changed the monitored folders, and took several attempts before it would sync with the folders I'd copied off the kiddos old micro-SD card. Of course what I was most amazed about was the lack of drag-n-drop support in Windows! What kind of lame-brained, Steve Jobs-style of engineer would nix that? (I did find the reg hack to renable that just a few minutes ago, but haven't verified it yet.)
Lots and lots of lockdowns in WinMo 7 that I don't like, as have been mentioned by previous posters. This whole thing reminds me why I disklike the iPhone's OS so much!
Maybe my next phone is gonna have to be an Andriod phone instead...
I kind of agree with all of you. Microsoft might have come into this having windows phone shut a little too tight.
However, that only means that there is more room for improvement.
Multitasking would be nice, especially ones that resonate when you dont have to see them, like streaming music. or at least faster app switching.
File Explorer is kind of important and Bluetooth file sharing too.
Tethering is not that important, but on my fuze I used to use it whenever I went on trips and the hotel tries to give me wifi for $30 a day...but eh... the screen is so much bigger, and it goes a lot faster too that I dont see any need for it, (besides plugins like java, or flash)
Oh and a definite must is the camera settings STAYING THE WAY I LEFT THEM. Whenever you exit the camera, it goes back to default. and on my phone at least, video recording goes to vga, so i would have to set it to 720p if i wanted it.
would love the call blocking and please a flash player!!!!!!!
Improvements
After Multi-tasking and copy and paste are added in the soon to be released update, I would like to see a few more additions. Flash player, Pandora, LED indicator light options for notifications, ringtone options beyond what they have allowed so far, the ability to send videos as MMS messages and a battery % remaining would make me ecstatic.
heh.... guys you will never see multitask like it was on 6.5 ..
as multitask they say - future CLOUD infrastructure update .. which will allow run signed apps on cloud infrastructure .. that means = you will be allowed to create ICQ client .. part of client will run on MS servers . that part will collect ALL YOUR ICQ EVENTS .. and then send to phone via PUSH notify .. on phone side nothing will be rly changed ..coz multitask goal does not collaborate with main WP7 idea - ISOLATED ENVIROMENT FOR APPS
Keyboard directional arrows
Is anyone missing keyboard up, down , left and right arrows? I sure miss them. Lifting your fingers off the keyboard to position the cursor on a particular spot in the sentence is really time consuming and not very precise.
Correct, I will really appreciate arrows in the keyboard
Sent from my Samsung Focus using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
My only feature request for all WP7 devices is gapless music playback. I really, really hate the two seconds silence between tracks, especially on electronic music or The Dark Side of The Moon (man, I love that album.)
Wi-Fi Router
The most important thing that is missing on Windows Phone 7, no doubt, is the wi-fi router function. Today I have to walk with two phones, because of the missing of wi-fi router.
Another important things are:
- File Manager
- Send photos/files via bluetooth
- Outlook Notes synchronization
- Office docs synchronized on the Windows Live could be open on a computer and vice-versa
Main software that I wish to be developed for WP7:
- Log Me in
- SQL Server Client
- Olive Tree Bible
- Google Maps (Oh Google Maps, you don't know how I miss you and your amazing Latitude)
- Auto CAD WS
- Skype
- MSN Messenger
I agree with everything else you published.
MMS Settings
Be able to customize the MMS Settings, some carriers have differnt tier's of internet with different APN's and it is a Necessity to have that option!!!!

2.2 Review

*** True Story ***
I am a member on Dell's community forum and have watched Dell's mouthpiece, Amy-B, post the lies and put up the smoke and mirrors regarding this for a while now. When she first announced that the update would begin on 11/15, I paid closer attention. By the end of the week when there was no update, I commented that users may have a potential class action suit. With that, I got a scathing email from Dell saying I violated their terms of use, some left handed subtle threats, and my post was deleted. I still laugh about that.
End True Story, my ongoing review below
I put 2.2 on last night and played with it for a little while before bed, then really started putting it to the test today. here's what's happened until now.
First, when I applied the update, it kept a lot of previous settings and applications rather than clean wiping. It also bypassed forcing me to login to google account, so when I tried to use the market, it couldn't. With that, I used my credentials to login to my google account and immediately started having some google calendar syncing error. It became a loop, each time asking me to report it, then asking me to force close the app, and then over and over the same thing. So I rebooted the streak, and it came up with the same exact issue not allowing me to do anything with it. I had to pull the battery to shut it down this time and when I get it all together to power up, I simply held the up/down volume keys and told it to do a factory reset.
The rom cooks itself into the streak as the factory install and 2.2 came up on the next boot, this time asking for google credentials. It worked that time, and I was ready to put the phone through it's motions.
Issues I've found
1. Voice Dialer via Bluetooth crashes each time I try to use it. It crashes to the point that it tells me to restart my phone. This is without fail.
2. swiping to unlock the phone, or pattern unlock are flaky. it will start then stop as if I've taken my finger off. I have to do it multiple times and crazy ways to make it work. Pattern lock same thing. Especially after coming out of my pocket... as if the heat from my body makes my finger not be recognized on the whole screen. This build makes the touchscreen no longer responsive as it was in 1.6... update, I've tested this over and over and over. yes, it seems to be the temperature, because if I blow on the screen to cool it, or something similar, the screen becomes instantly responsive to my touch. I never had this problem with 1.6 regardless of when I pulled it out of my pocket.
3. sometimes, changing screens gets choppy or laggy.
4. No widget bar or tray/drawer that allows you to turn BT or Wifi on or off. You have to get something from the market to do this (updated, this is available as a widget, I should open my eyes a bit)
5. Can't change the number of screens; can't add or subtract screens, stages, rooms, or whatever you choose to call it. You're stuck with 7, the center one being the default.
6. Multiple FC's for variety of reasons, many are while simply browsing the market. With that Microsoft-esque error reporting thing always popping up, I think they anticipated feeding garbage to the masses.
7. Have tried a few alternate launchers. Some are better than others, more functional etc.. .but no matter how weak an alternate launcher appears to be, they pretty much ALL beat StageUI
Likes
1. Have always liked the live wallpapers that we were introduced to in 2.1
2. landscape mode rights itself regardless of which side is facing up. could be a caveat since it puts the home/back/menu buttons upside down on the left instead of right with the hard buttons on the bottom, but still kind of cool nonetheless.
4. Support for Exchange is native and doesn't require additional software/applications.
the long and the short of it.. Dell is useless as an OS developer/tweaker and StageUI blows.
Samsung hit the homerun with it on its Galaxy S series. I was just at best buy, and the Galaxy Tab is pretty sweet but the price tag is ridiculous. Comparing 2.1 of my Vibrant with 2.2 on my streak, the Vibrant wins. no contest.
Day one of having the new 2.2 update on there and it's clear that this OS needs some patching already. I can only imagine what the people on O2 in the UK had to go through with their 2.1 fiasco
more to follow...
Here's a couple of things that I like in this build but before I list the items I wanted to address the comment you made about being able to turn of BT, wi-fi, GPS, brightness, etc. Under apps you can select Power Control and that will give you those options in a form of a widget. You do, however, will have to delete one of the Stage widgets to free up the room. Or you can just open the widget via apps. For my use, I currently prefer a different launcher than Stage. I am using the LauncherPro but there are a lot of other free choices like ADW, Zeam and so on.
Here are the things I like about this build:
1. Ability to hang up the call by pressing the power button ( you have to go to Settings-Accessibility-then check the mark for that option)
2. Radio feature - is absolutely great. The thing I don't like is the web ad that seems to pop every time I start listening to a station. If anyone knows how to turn/block that pop-up you would make me very happy )
3. Keyboard is awesome. Love the size, the options to switch to symbols, just love it. Haven't messed with SWYPE but I love the Andriod KB right now.
4. Flash - yes it works and it works well.
5. Speed - significantly faster. Whether navigating or downloading. Wi-fi speeds are faster than 1.6 or 2.1 I use to have.
6. Bluetooth volume is louder. This one was high on my priority list.
7. Music widget - looks nice and clean.
8. Camera works fine. I don't see an option for 720p though.
9. Security is beefed up by adding the option for PIN or password on top of the normal sliding lock. My slider works without any issues. But I prefer the pattern lock which also works great.
10. Haptic feedback can't be completely turned off, or you can turn off certain features alone like keyboard. I have mine off so the three main buttons don't vibrate any more. I don't think that option was available in the previous builds but I could be wrong.
These are the ones that I can think of right off the bat. I may add more as I remember them.

Long press home, then under widgets, then power control... thanks tons. that's what I was looking for.
So my quick review:
The good:
Loving the out-of-the-box Exchange support. Yay. Mobile e-mail/calendar/contacts without having to use Touchdown and the hassle of 'pushing' Touchdown contacts to the phone's contacts.
w00t. Ability to grab requiring apps from the market which require 2.x.
2.x features like portrait home screen, better multi-touch, etc.
The bad:
The Stage UI is just lame. Giving it a few days before I toss it in the bin.
I miss the old video playing app. I dunno what it was called, but there isn't even a shortcut for the new one. I installed ASTRO File Manager, browsed to my video directory and the file launched with some less-than-basic video player. What I liked about the old one was the order-by-date view which I have become used to but isn't the end of the world, the resume where you left off feature, and the delete from within the app feature. I guess Rock Player is the video player most people seem to be recommending, so I hope it has this.
For all its faults, I liked the old keyboard. I suspect it's still there, but I have yet to look. Using 2 (To/two/too) and 4 (For/four), etc in txt/IM/tweets now takes extra keypresses.
I never really knew how handy the Dell notification area was for 1.6. I'd turn off the cellular data and run Wi-Fi only, with just a couple of presses and it wouldn't interrupt the app I was in. Now I have to go to the home screen, press the menu button, and that's only to turn off wireless. I have yet to find the equivalent enable/disable for 3G.
Yet to check:
I've found the Streak's camera has taken pretty lame photos. I'm not photophile, but our 5 year old, 4MP camera takes better photos than the Streak. I've had the Streak set to the best quality (Lowest compression or whatever it was) and if you zoom in on a picture while viewing on a PC, it gets pixelated very quickly, while our 4MP pics are much nicer looking and they are twice the file size (4MP pic twice the file size of a 5MP pic?), so I'm interpreted this as 'The Streak takes crappy pics'. Been waiting to see what, if anything, the upgrade to 2.2 does for this.
So I guess it seems to lack polish, BUT, I think the reason for this is because it's actually near-to-bare Android, so I'm not going to criticise the roughness when the other option is more polish (Which one may or may not like) from Dell that means OS updates take 6+ months. I'm sure I'll be able to overcome anything I'm not liking with apps or through tweaking some options somewhere. Isn't this why we have Android?
But yeah. Stage is coming off pretty quick I suspect.
PS - You all might laugh: http://i.imgur.com/ULMLx.png
This build was far too laggy for my tastes. 1.6 was faster on some of the processes for me. I'm happily back on DJ Steve's build which is soooo much faster and has virtually the same features.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Something I'm surprised is:
2.2 doesn't have separate sounds for incoming:
E-mail
Texts
Reminders
...I dunno if iOS does, but my old Windows Mobile device did. I'd like a different sounds for these events, as I'll respond to them differently. Now I don't know if it's a calendar reminder which I can't ignore, a text which I might ignore or an e-mail that I can ignore...

Try "Quick Settings" which puts an icon in your status bar so when in an app, just drag down the status bar click on it and all your settings are there. Or, try "QuickDesk". Not sure if this is out of beta yet but its also an awesome app for doing exactly what you are talking about.....and much more.
Cant wait to get my Streak and to start rockin this 2.2. Would love to have vanilla 2.2 though.

Yes the led can work as a flashlight. I used the N1 Torch app and it worked fine.
Yes it does have wifi tethering.
I really miss the 1.6 menu bar/notification bar. Stage blows compared to the old ui. The swype keyboard is great. I have mixed feelings about the update mainly because of the ui changes.

Alright. Others have answered, but I'll pass on what I know. If you're talking Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) not talking to an Exchange server, a la Hotmail, I'm getting a "cannot connect to server" error... My EAS to work's Exchange is working flawlessly though.
And USB/Wi-fi tethering are working grand. I'm tethered by Wi-fi as I write this, so I can pass my 3G USB modem on to a colleague. w00t.
I am a little concerned about battery life. I haven't done that much with the phone today, unlike a normal day where I might squeeze in a few calls, texts, tweets, bit of web browsing, and three+ hours of video and have the battery at 20% at the end of the day. I'm at 20% left now, and I haven't done any of those things.
thnx
have you tried hotmail through POP3 ? it worked with k9 client.
what i meant is activesync on windows 7 64bit with office 2010 32bit.
yeah batterylife concerns me also. i have a habit of draining these in godspeed (A)
You can create a shortcut to the wifi & networks popup from launcherpro activities.
1. Long press on the desktop bsckground

4. Select wireless & networks

Froyo + Epic = Amazing Phone

Okay, I'm sure a bunch of people have been having problems with their froyo upgrades... But I have had nothing short of an amazing day with my first 24 hours of Froyo on the Epic. So I am making this thread so we can highlight the POSITIVE changes that froyo has brought us Epic owners.
I have discovered a few cool things that Froyo brings, and I am sure there are more. Let's get a list compiled of all the positives:
What I have discovered so far:
1) Battery life ( see attached photo) - it is so much better than 2.1. I can't believe it's the same phone, battery!
2) The screen rotates left or right now into landscape mode. I was always astonished on 2.1 that it didn't do that.
3) Apps 2 SD. Long talked about, but awesome when it's finally here. I have a bunch of apps and I have 390Mb open on my phone. My wife has 412Mb open on her Epic. #4 is helped by this
4) The phone runs smoother. Of course Linpack scores of 13.92 prove it, but I haven't had any screen lag or lag when opening the app drawer or in typical use the way my Epic got laggy on 2.1 before. Apps 2 SD definitely helps clear up phone memory for every day use.
5) Colorized menus. It may seem trivial, but now I realize just how drab the menus were previously. The icons 'pop' with the color added to them.
6) Separate Sound and Display options in the settings menu.
7) Flash. 'nuf said on that one! Huge improvement over 2.1.
8) Improved Gmail and Youtube.
*the rest will be either new finds by me, or contributions w/ credit.
9) Pinch whatever home screen you are on to reveal all home screens. (thanks styckx)
10) I just discovered that we finally have copy/paste options of text that WE choose! When you are in a field where you have been typing and you click in that field, you get a blue slider button. You can slide that button to whatever starting point you want in your text, and then you can choose to edit and you can highlight, copy, paste, etc only the portions of text you want, not just a copy all option like before! This is a huge improvement over 2.1. Text select was the only thing I missed from my Blackberry, and now we have that too. Not in all situations, but at least it makes editing your current text so much easier.
11) I read it somewhere else before, but just verified it works. If you swipe to the right on a contact in your messages list, it automatically calls them. If you swipe to the left, it automatically starts you up for a text reply. Genius!
12) Robust stock audio player with tons more features. (thanks again styckx)
Okay, I know I am missing things that even I have already discovered and don't remember. 2.2 seems a lot more than a .x update. It's not just 1 or 2 minor tweaks like we have seen previously. Please post anything you have noticed about Froyo that adds to the Epic experience!
* I know there are some things about it people don't like. I am unable to swipe on the notification bar to increase/decrease brightness. I really enjoyed that feature. Feel free to post what you don't like about Froyo also. But I would like to concentrate on tips, tricks, improvements, etc. that Froyo has brought us!
Pinch your home screen
As great as froyo is, there are a lot of probs with it.
Random services keep appearing.
Samsung widgets disappear occasionally
Wifi not working at times (not sure if that's my connection)
Idk, I'm just curious, what measures are you taking on battery life?

About all the bad I've noticed with the latest DK28 build is the auto-rotate is REALLY slow, and it doesn't seem to auto-rotate when on the main screen (only seems to rotate when I am in the "settings" menu). I had some odd issues with DK17 where it didn't like to delete messages from my Activesync accoutn that appears to be fixed in DK28.

I have been on wi-fi since last night. Not a single issue for me regarding that. Yet. So it may be your wi-fi.
As far as battery goes, I am straight stock everything, no battery juice defender sipper type apps or anything. Just rooted, with no Sprint apps. Nothing special.

I am getting the auto-rotate to work both ways on the home screens, and it takes maybe .2 seconds to do it. Maybe try and wipe and re-flash? Just a suggestion.
I am getting lag at random times. Sometimes the phone will just freeze for like 30 seconds as launcherpro slowly crashes. Rotation is slow, 5 seconds i mean come on. Wifi has been weirdish, might have fixed itself. So far, no where NEAR as smooth as stock DI18. Eclair on the epic was AMAZINGLY smooth and polished.
I like the new features, but there is no way that DK28 is ready for primetime. They need to do a lot of bug fixing on this to make it anywhere near as smooth as other phones running 2.2 that I have seen.
Also, I installed it correctly and several different ways, so its not a bad flash. I am currently running Stock DK28 with root and clockworkmod that was ODIN flashed from stock DI18 which I ODIN flashed. GPS is working.
One thing I really like a lot is the new Audio player. EQ, Visualizer, audio "effects", much better navigating of albums and artists.
I mean, I own PowerAmp which is THE BEST audio player period, but the new default audio player is leaps and bounds better than the old one and is fantastic for default (free).

Agreed. The features are all here. Now it just needs to be polished and smoothed out like the original Eclair builds were.
Bluetooth dialing is busted. Media hub wants to upgrade, but there is no upgrade. On the plus, my gps works now. I don't care what anyone says. This is a beta for hardware level.4 phone to test. I think we will see a newer release pushed to our phones.
I'm just going to keep it. It's stable and usable enough until the real (and hopefully more refined and stable) release is sent.
I'm sick of flashing and restocking my phone. I'm thinking a upgrade from DK28 to the real release won't require the dreaded WIPE WIPE WIPE and a rube goldberg puzzle to get the GPS to work.
If for some stupid, company killing reason DK28 as it stands now really is going to be the official release, I will go back to 2.1 and stay there. We'll see.

Hey OP you might want to try that again because I'm on froyo and can still increase/decrease the brightness using the notification slide-bar technique. The bar may hide but if you move your finger left or right even when its already gone you should see the brightness change.
Mine doesn't change orientation either unless I'm in a program. If I'm in a program, it's instant pretty much..on the homescreen I've waited and the only way I can get it to change is by flipping open my keyboard.
All of this is overshadowed by my sd not working after the update there by rendering most apps useless

Seems to be working good for me so far. The only thing annoying thus far is the lag in bringing it from sleep with the power button. There's a second or 2 delay before the screen comes on after you hit power. In 2.1 it was nearly instantaneous.
Im not getting it to rotate to the right,

Although many great reports.. and some not so..
This is obviously NOT the final release. lets remember that..
It is so close now and will be great. (or better at least)
I myself tested on 3 diff phones, found recurring and non- recurring defects which point to the fact that this particular release in its entirety wont be pushed OTA to the masses.. it cant. wont handle the endless differences out in the wild..
And to be expected.. Exactly the reason why upgrades take time.

List of issues, any solutions?

Cause I'm about to return this thing.
Software/OS wise:
- I guess this is an Android "thing", but the phone is constanly launching random programs in the background that I had nothing to do with, and it noticeably slows the phone down. If I see Sense stuttering, I'll run ATK, kill the dozen or so random things thta somehow launched all by themselves, and the phone is snappy again. Today I was typing a text message, and the phone was so slow, it was only registering one character every 5 seconds or so in the message. I went tho ATK, a whole ****load of random stuff was running, I killed it all, text messaging goes back to normal. How can you use an OS that randomly launches apps that degrade system performance? And as far as I can tell there's no way to remove the apps, or keep them from randomly launching on thier own in the background. I thought Android apps running in the background were supposed to not use any resources? But these a re having a noticible impact, clear as day. Sluggish UI, run ATK, kill the apps, silky smooth UI.
- I despise threaded SMS and you can't turn it off.
- I hate the little gray faces in the people list, and you can't turn them off
- Don't like the transparent folder backgrounds, and you can't do anything about it.
Hardware wise:
- The volume rocker is in a terrible positoin and is way to easy to accidentally hit. And apparently you need root to do anything about by remapping the keys
- If the phone is locked, sliding out the keyboard just a little bit wakes up the phone unlocked. andthen when trying to slide the KB back in you end up hitting buttons and hittingthe volume rocker, it's just annoying
- Suffers from the iPhone 4 "holding the phone in your righthand cuts your signal strength by 3 bars" problem
I mean, by themselves, none of these is a huge deal (except the OS slowing itself to a crawl, WTF is up with that?), but add them all up, on tp of the fact I'm paying $30 more a month over my Mogul, and I think this thing is going back to the Sprint store this weekend.
Kinda shocking that 5 years later the latest Androis phone still can;t match my Mogul in terms of useability.

Ok - a long list of complaints. I'll try to address a few, but I don't think there are any "fixes" for any of these problems.
1. Have not had this happen on this phone. Not sure what is running....what were you doing at the time? What apps do you have installed?
2. You'd prefer a single message? Not really sure I understand the issue with threaded SMS...
3. If you hate the gray faces, you can customize the picture for each person - if you don't feel like doing that, then stop complaining. To assign a picture for your contacts - Contacts - "Joe Smith" - Edit - then click the Camera to the left of the contacts name. You can assign any picture you want.
4. This is something that can be modified once we have perm. root, I believe. Is customizable if you modify LPP or ADW.
5. I see a lot of people complaining about the terrible placement. I've only hit them once when closing the phone, but they are almost in the same position as my Heroc, so it must be a habit from avoiding that rocker.
6. My slider needs to slide until I see the 2nd row of keys before the screen turns on. Not sure if yours is diff. or not, but that seems acceptable to me. Perhaps you want to put a lock code or pin on, and then it won't open to the homescreen, etc.
7. I have noticed that too, but really almost every phone has this to some effect. And I've only watched the signal strength bars in the notifications bar. We should watch the signal strength (dB) to see if there really is a drastic difference. It hasn't negatively impacted my use of the phone (on a call, or surfing the web) so I don't really see it as an issue, but more of a pet peeve.
Sorry to hear you are so turned off by your experience so far. hope some of what I've written is useful.
There is no need for a task killer. Just because you see those apps in the backround doesnt actually mean they are running. Android works different in the fact that those are stored in ram to actually save battery if you were to open those apps. It doesnt use more battery to have those apps stored in your ram. Since froyo was introduced there is no reason to use ATK unless there is an aftermarket app that you know will cause power drain.
There is an app called Volume Locker. It will keep you from being able to change the volume level.
Also, there are different dialers out there that offer different looks if you dont like the sense dialer.
I dont have any issue with my bars going down when holding my phone. The reason that happens to an Iphone is because they built the antenna around the case of the phone. It's not built like that with the shift.

1) if your talking about things like FM radio, Sprint navigation, NFL, Sprint TV, etc running in the background. they arent using processor time just small bits of memory they launch in the background after certain triggers like "SMS Recieved" occur and you cant change that without full root, or you can use the temporary root and set it after every boot
2 and 3) i believe you can with handsent or chomp
3) not without full root and nand unlock
as for the rest, havent had any issues with signal either on or off my airave so i cant really replicate your issue, havent had any slowness or slowdowns compared to the painfully buggy and slow mogul for sure.

but there is. Performance on the phone is noticably slower, sliuggish screen transitions, today my text messaging was barely working at all the phone was so bogged down. Killing tasks fixes the problem, so obviously those tasks are using some system resources. If they weren't I wouldn't care that they are there, but they are having a absolute impact of the phones performance and responsiveness.
none of the apps running were crazy stuff, there's maybe 2-3 things I installed from the market (Astra and Google Maps being the most frequnt) and the rest is preinstalled stuff, Teleus GPS, Voicemail, Gmail, Amazon MP3, etc. At the low point ATK says I have aorund 30M memory free, clearing the apps out brings it up to 160.

SOMETHING getting auto launched is using processor time, absolutely. When the phone is runing so slow I can;t even type a text message, and killing the running apps fixes the problem, then there's something running in the background slowing the phone down massively.
Might want to try killing apps 1 at a time to find out what the rogue process is... generally task managers do more harm than good.
You can also sync facebook photo's with contacts if any of your contacts are on your fb account... if you use facebook that is You can also assign photo's thru your gmail account on the web, that is an easier interface than on the phone.
There is really no getting around getting used to a new phone.. just takes some time to get comfortable with it. Usually a week or 2.

You need to read up on this article. like I said before you only need to use it when you have a bad app. Close 1 at a time until you figure out the lag issue as I havnt had a single issue at all with lag. Why you shouldn't use task killers
When you close apps that always run they have to re-open and that uses CPU. All those apps running (except the one giving you issues) arent using any cpu just stored in your memory and if they need to be ran it actually saves CPU. You obvliously have more apps running than you think because I always have at the very least 80mb free. If you decide to root your phone you can always use auto killer memory optimizer and make it so if you hit a certain point it will close the empty apps etc.
Give it some time. Your obviously and amateur Android user (Please dont take offense) and will learn how they work and love it I promise.
I think you're the first person I've heard about who prefers Windows Mobile 6.X to Android. If that's the case, more power to you. Rock that Mogul and cut your monthly bill down and save some bucks. In this economy, nobody's going to argue with you over that.
Sounds like a lot of your gripes are just getting used to the phone. I've never once accidentally hit the volume rocker but I'm coming from a Sprint Hero too, so maybe that's why. If I cup my hand around the bottom of the phone I can get it to drop a bar or two, but I never hold my phone like that under normal use so it doesn't bother me. And my phone doesn't wake up until the keyboard is halfway out (2nd row of keys). If yours wakes from barely moving, maybe something is wrong with it? Take it back for a new one and see if that fixes the problem.
I haven't noticed any slowdown but again, I'm coming from the Hero and that was just a dog trying to run factory Sense. Some people have reported improved performance after performing a factory reset (though that's typically related to data speeds). Might be worth looking into if you're still having problems.

I understand the who idea of android running crap in the background, and if it really worked as advertised and was using no CPU power, I wouldn;t care if there were 100 apps in the background. Whatever is running my my background is causing moderate performance issues most of the time, and occasionally severe performance issues.
Next time it happens I'll try the "kill them 1 at a time" thing and see if I can identify the culprit.
I recognize that most of this is just preference and getting used to the phone, but the performance degradation, the volume rocker, and the signal loss are, to me, enough added up to make the phone just not worth dealing with.

Well that sucks you find one of the sickest Android phones not up to par. Maybe you should go back to a Windows phone lol
There's always the Jesus phone.
Also, the battery is doubling as a heater. I played angrybirds for about 20 minutes, my battery is reading 106 degrees F, and my hand is starting to sweat.

Well, my windows phone doesn't launch mystery apps in the background to kill my performance, doesn't have threaded SMS, doesn't have transparent folders, doesn't put little grey heads next to my contacts, doesn't have any buttons that are easily pushed by mistake, doesn't have an overheating battery, doesn't unlock and wake up when the keyboard is opened, and doesn;t lose signal strength when you pick it up. So yeah, it's kinda dominating android on those points.

Herb, I am quickly starting to love your posts!

Uh, I'd be inclined to think the device is defective or you installed something janky. I have only in a few situations with z4root seen lag on this thing.
I would try a factory reset (hold volume down while powering on the device, choose from menu) and see if that doesn't help. It will wipe the handset so be prepared for that.

Hard reset fixed most of my issues, but the only big one was the battery life anyways. Try that and hopefully it works for you too.
Life is too short to be miserable over a cell phone. Take it back and go back to the Mogul. You clearly like it better and it's cheaper per month. Win-win.
Peace out! Go rock that bad ass mogul til the wheels fall off.
Scent phrum mie fone!

How can you back up your contacts? The Sprint store copied them over from my Mogul for me, so they're all on the phone, no on my gMail account.
I'd like to hold out and see if some of these issues are fixable, because there is a lot I like about the phone too. I love the marketplace, I like the proximity sensor, I like close to 99% of Sense, the screen is gorgeous. Is there hopw that when the phone is rooted I'll be able to fix some of this stuff?

I also got about a 50/50 split betweenn yes and no on whether or not I can go back to my SERO plan if I want to.
I'll give it a week, hopefully real root will be out by then, see if it helps/give the ability to fix some of this stuff, and if not, back to the Mogul. Much love for the 30 day return window!!
Unfortunately I think to get the contacts copied over to Google you'll need to log into your Google account and manually add them.
The nice thing is though, that once you start flashing ROM's they will automatically sync.
I find it much easier to go in and streamline my contacts on my computer.
Also, if you do not use Facebook or have pics to sync up from FB you can add pictures to your Google contacts and they will sync to the phone.
