Hello.I was wondering if i can power a high mcd led from the usb connector on the blackstone. It would give more light for night shooting.Anyone that has some info on the connector specifications?
i need something like this too... but will the phone recognise it??

It doesn't need to recognize it just to power it.
erhm, I think that won't be possible....
the usb port is used to charge the phone, IE. to receive power.
I don't think you can draw power from that port, the data lines are certainly not made for it, and the powerlines won't output anything I think

It's said in the title. Anybody know how to do that ???
don't know a way to do that cause usb is delivering power and kf will take it to charge ...

there should be a way, at least you can cut the power wire

That would be the only way, modify the usb cable to not have the power line.... Non~changing cable.
isn't that stuff mandated in build.prop or one of the items in system? find that edit it to usb mount off or something.

Has anyone tried using a light for the nook that is powered by the micro USB port?
I haven't found any USB lights with micro USB connectors, but was tempted to buy a laptop USB light and swapping the connector for a micro USB connector.
Plug it into your nook touch and you have light. Of course this will drain your nooks battery faster, but I would hate to have to worry about charging batteries on a reading light in addition to ensuring my nook is charged.
It may be possible, just check if the power drain is not very high, as the USB has a limit of 500 mA (if I am not mistaken). If it works, please tell us.
You will need the USB hack that is on the forum, but I guess there is nothing that would prevent it to work (just maybe frying your USB connection).
Good luck.
You should be able to draw some decent current off the USB connector.
I've pulled >100mA trying to power a hub.
I don't know how much current those LEDs pull but certainly less than that.
It's unfortunate that 2.1 doesn't support reverse portrait or you could have the light at the top!
Light working
Hi. I saw this thread and then I've remembered that I should have an old laptop light so I gave it a go

Nice....I just ordered a plug on amazon at the moment to do basically the same thing. I've got an old light at home that still works.
Plug: http://amzn.com/B005FUNYSA
Have you used it any with the light? How does the battery handle it?
I'm tempted to sell my current Nook Touch and get the one just announced: Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, IF the Nook powered light isn't great.
Edit: I received the plug, however the light i have doesn't seem to light up off of it. I checked to see that it works off of a USB port on my computer, so I'm not sure if it just wants too much juice or what. I wonder if I need to be rooted, to allow it to work (doubtful, but not sure)...
I bought a Nexus One with the infamous broken power button issue, and I am curious what would the effect be if I short the VCC and GND line in the charging port? Has anyone tried that? I am thinking that it will either fry the board or trick the phone to think that it is charging.
The reason I want to do this is because I travel a lot and I might not have access to USB charging if I want to swap the SIM card. I am familiar with the other tricks regarding remapping the trackball_center and I am going to install a version of CWM that doesn't support charging (that way the phone boots when I plug a charging cable).
So long story short... what do you think about attempting to short the micro USB charging/data port?

Not much.
Unless the unit is in USB host mode there will be no voltage on the Vcc line.
Even in USB host mode it should be current limited and do no damage.
Still, I wouldn't do it.
I don't know why you think that shorting it will do something useful.

I actually do not know, thus I asked... just trying to think outside the box about a way to trick the phone to think it is charging short of carrying a portable battery charger with me (which can be problematic on carry-on luggage).
Another idea I am thinking about is building a small flex cable using a conductive ink pen that permanently connect to the phone's battery on one side and a cut down male micro-usb on the other side (to slim it down). Such cable would be small enough to fold under the battery cover and allow it to close.
My question is: Will the ~3.7v be enough to get the phone to start charging? and do you foresee any issues with feeding power from the battery right back into the phone's charge port?

I think 3.7 won't be enough. Coz usb giving ~5V. So phone won't charge at smaller voltage.
Replaced the lcd, but before this it was left to totally drain.. now when it's plugged in to the wall it wont charge, doesnt warm up, doesnt pop up on my PC when plugged in.. I have the strangest thought the known issue with charging is happening but because it doesnt have enough power to get to the bootloader i cant force it to power off...
Will connecting a spliced usb cable to the + and - points on the battery and plug it in to the mains work to get some juice into this battery? i know it works for old nokias etc/...
cheers

In most cases it will work. Are you sure your USB port wasn't a part of collateral damage when you were replacing your LCD screen ? If you have a multimeter, just check the connection in the microusb. Probably the charging of the n7 battery may awaken it from its slumber, what else you can try is to use jumpers to connect another battery that you know that is fully charged with almost the same voltage and try to boot up the n7?! Maybe that will help ?

I've noticed when I connect my S8 via USB to my pc the metall frame on the left and right side feels different. It's feel a little jittery, like a very low vibration and it's blunter.
You can feel how the data move between PC and phone
When I charge the phone it's feel normal.
I think that is not a subjective impression because four other people which I ask to test and feel noticed the same.
Can anyone confirm this with an other phone?
I experienced this with a ZTE phone and some other devices. I think it's because of the voltage that "is on the phone" when it's connected to the charger. But I don't think this is a problem.
that's a bad or absent ground pole in your electrical connection
OK, I guess that you are right x-geo - because when I connect the phone to a laptop which works in battery mode the effect dont occur. When I plug the power supply it's starts to tingle.
But I dont know how this emerge the power supply is connected to a standard German power outlet.
Can this make a problem on a long term?

Not much of an electrician, but this could easily turn into a problem.
Electricity variations, when uncontrolled or when they happen when unexpected can damage the hardware.
So pay attention and don't let this issue occur very often.
Happily the effect don't occur when my laptop is on battery mode so I can easy bypass the problem.
Thanks for your support.

Does the problem also happen with the original Samsung wall charger? Did you try a different cable?
It's doenst matter if I use the original samsung usb cable, or any other ubs cable to connect the phone with the laptop
