mtkates posted a great SPB mobile shell theme, the VGA customizzation of the DIAMOND SPB mobile shell 2.1 theme http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402021
I have tested it (SPB works in 192 DPI) and works fine on X7500 wm 6.1 ROM!
In the same post there is a mini guide to convert QVGA in VGA themes
WOW! It looks nice, but must be memory hungry application.

does this works in landscape mode or only in portait?
portrait AND landscape
Hello...
Can it be use in 96dpi? Did you try it?
Last time I try I need to make a hard reset because my device didn't recognize shell 2 themes!
Regards.
nah its ****ed up in 96dpi
192 works great though, but only 5 tabs? weird
Ah well great none the less

I agree, SPB Mobile shell don't show correctly at 96 dpi, although all functions work. A solution was suggested on how to fix it. I tried, but it did not work for me. I always get a blank screen upon launching SPB Mobile Shell. The device did not froze, I can get out off it using the normal functions. I must have messed up somewhere, but with my innexperience, it was just too over whelming. Although, the suggestion was really a good and valid idea as he was able to make SPB Mobile Shell run on a square screen.
What version of RealVGA are you using? The updated version of this theme (only version I've tried), hangs when trying to go to the 'Now' screen for me.
Got it working with the cab version of 1.1, the files only version didnt work for me so I doubt upgrading would work either... shame, the VGA version looks a bit rough and ready on mine.
None of this works at all at 128dpi. Just in case anyone wondered.
Strange. After I copied all the *.dat files to the device's folder, the spb menu does not start anymore. I'm in 192 dpi.
Tried twice with the same result. Once I recopied the original *.dat files back, it springs back to life again.
Okay, the dat files override method does not work, but a cab file from responderman does it.
I'm beginining to reaaly like spb mobile shell now. It's much more customisable than I first thought.
Edit: Solved. All the skins in those threads for for QVGA only. There are only two VGA compatible theme AFAIK.
After installing spb mobile shell, download and install the cab in this link. It works for VGA devices.

eaglesteve,
I thought i had read in another post that you have been tweaking with the SPB MS 2.1 settings and have been able to speed up the VGA Diamond interface for Athena?? Is this correct? If so, can you share the settings you used because I am finding that although the program works, the interface slows down my Advantage 7501 dramatically and the device speeds back up as soon as I uninstall the SPB mobile shell program.
I am currently running the Taxist Ultra Lite (1st one) ROM

Photons2,
I don't remember having made such a post, but if you come across that again, I've be interested to know too. For me, I don't notice too much slow down yet.
Ok, just checking back, I have since upgraded to the
Sogarth's Base Vanilla Rom (SPL 3.5 and 1.2) which has worked great! The SPB Mobile shell is nice and smooth now and no problemos so far (about 5 hours into it)
If your going to use the Diamond interface with SPB mobile shell V2.1 then I recommend the Sogarths / Irus Vanilla Rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410139
Now if I could just figure out mtkates' tutorial better (QVGA to VGA Mobile Shell Conversion Mini-Tutorial) I could get some better graphics out there however no luck yet...
Check this out: VGA diamond skin for SPB Mobile Shell. Fresh from the ovan.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=412052
After installing the standard SPL Mobile Shell, simply copy the files in the above zip into the spb menu shell folder. Done. You now have a beautiful diamond interface.... Well.. not exactly. The layout is still the version 1, which looks like standard Mobile Shell in terms of control but diamond in color. In vesion 2.0, they have layout which gives buttons and controls that resember the diamond more closely. However, there is no VGA diamond skin for that yet AFAIK.
This one works great, and it is a REAL VGA Interface.

Thanks a lot for this work.
.... this here is not for free, but its really great and only for VGA (640x480).

Sorry, i forget the LINK.
hi everybody.
as i found much cool apps for my former windows mobile device here, i thought there is maybe someone who can help me.
i will get a e-ten x800 device soon. with vga resolution.
now i'm asking myself if i can use the htc apps from here at this device too.
i use the retouched dialer skin and die htc action screen and the htc homeplugin at my old qvga device. can i use this skins/apps at vga resolution. will the display be automatically reszied to vga resolution. or will be the dialer for example be smaller ? another question is, the eten x800 is a device with videocall function too. it comes with windows mobile 6. will be there a special dialer with videocall function or will there be the normal dialer i know from windows mobile 6. so i can use the retouched dialer instead?
would be very nice if someone can help me . i really would like to get my old interface with my skins and apps on this new vga device.

My question is simple...
I have been using QVGA screen devices for a long time and I have invested a good ammount on softwares that display well on QVGA screens.
Now I'm thinking of doing an upgrade and I have pinpointed the HD as my next device, but since I have invested a lot money on softwares, I don't want to upgrade to a new phone and find all these softwares unusable on a WVGA screen.
Will the programs designed for QVGA display properly on a WVGA screen?
My common sense tells me that no, it won't but I have read that it will display without problems.
Any thoughts anyone?
where did you read that it will display with no problems?
Very few apps are made for WVGA and I cannot image that HTC lets this be a show stopper, since it will take years and years before WVGA is as standard as QVGA is.
The same goes for VGA though, which is also just catching on in mainstream, yet my VGA Diamond has no problems running anything whatsoever. Some QVGA apps just get blown up to fit the screen and run just like on a QVGA screen, yet I wonder how this would work when the aspect ratio is no longer 4:3 (as with QVGA, HVGA and VGA) but instead 16:9 (WVGA). Stretching is ugly so with apps that need to maintain the aspect ratio (anything other than apps that can resize infinitely like Operah, Windows Mobile etc) we would likely see black boxes on top of and below the app.
Copy pasted one of my own old posts from another topic, which had the same question but for VGA on the Raphael.
WM has a so-called compatibility mode. If an app is not specifically compiled to tell WM it knows about resolution and DPI settings, WM presents your device to the program as 240x320 QVGA. This way, most QVGA apps simply run on VGA. (And I can verify that at least on the Diamond, most apps just work). WM then simply scales the application to fill the screen. (One way to notice if this is happening with an app is that you can see the text is smooth and looks high-res, except on the menu bar at the bottom)
Actually that was quite a nice move of MS. However, there is a bug with compatibility mode and 320x320 devices (like the Treo800w) that prevents some apps from running. Luckily, the Raphael is not one of those devices.
However, of course, some apps do tell WM they know about resolution and DPI, but aren't made to support 480x640 devices like the Axim v51, Diamond and Raphael, those apps may look weird (though they don't seem to be numerous), but generally still work.

If I recall correctly, however, non-resolution/dpi-aware applications ran on odd resolutions like WVGA for the Touch HD are still represented as 320x240, and will be stretched to use the entire screen (in other words: fugly). I know this is the case for 320x320, and I think it would be a safe bet to assume the same for 480x800.
For applications that are resolution/dpi-aware, it all depends on how the developers did it. Black border at the bottom and top, correctly scaled, etc, it's all possible and completely up to how the developer handled this in their code.
Chainfire
Thanks for the answer.
That was very well explained.
What I read that it won't have problems was perhaps with the fact that WM will stretch the program to fit the screen, but it wasn't as well explained as your post.
So now I know that it's possible that half of my programs will be stretched on the screen and it will look crappy, the other half will have black borders around...
WVGA Themes
I just wonder if all the (beautiful) themes created for Diamond will be correctly displayed with the Touch HD ?
As I'm creating my own (for Diamond) and first one, I hope I can use it with the HD WVGA screen.
Thanx for informations.
WVGA has the same aspect ratio of the WQVGA
WVGA 480x800 (Touch HD, Sony XPERIA)
WQVGA 240x400 (Samsung Omnia)
Being an owner of a Samsung Omnia I found out that there are very few software that wont run on non a standard QVGA resolution.
Good thing about it is that most important and recently updated software do take into consideration the modern variable display sizes and aspect ratios.
This is a promising trend, software companies tend to release fixes/upgrades for their software for these new resolutions
So I wouldnt worry so much!

I recently installed Manilla2d on the omnia, the themes have to be modified for the omnias resolution 240x400 images, backgrounds, icon possitions etc, therefore no theme for diamond will be directly usable with the touch hd, there will have to be modifications on them to work

With this Forum and community and the other WVGA topphone Xperia, these forums will be soon filled with people working on these modifications....
I am not worried at all about this
You can try Force high resolution. You can find it at pocketpcfreeware.com.
hi,
i'm trying to work out which shell replacement to use on my experia. i've used the full version of spb mobile shell on my kaiser and quite like the functionality although it looks pretty dull. i'm tempted to install TF3D but would like the opinion of someone who has used both as to which is better ?
unfortunately, i need the ability to go back to the standard wm homescreen as i don't think any of the shell replacements can take advantage of standard wm today plugins (i'm thinking david andr birthdays here which i use to warn me in advance of upcoming birthdays so that i can get a present in time ...)
does anyone have any opinions ?
thanks in advance ...
I use all.. I use WM today screen. and spbshell and tf3d.. I choose what I like at that moment. Thats why the panels are so handy
thanks kev!n - you don't find that your phone slows down at all ?
how do you access all 3 ? do you have TF3D set up as a panel od you access all 3 from panel 1 on your x1 ?
thanks
Yes I installed it as a panel. And acces it all with panels. And the phone did not slow down for me so I think its great
thanks for that. did you manage to get the full version of mobile shell working as a panel or are you using the panel version ?
mobile shell + pocket plus + phone suite all the way
TF3D is only a little eye candy no more, and I prefer more info on screen than good graphics on screen.
I have both installed (as panels). No problems here, running very nicely.
Using TF3D more, for the most part simply because the HTC Music Player is more touch friendly (although the eye candy doesn't hurt either if I'm being completely honest).
Can't really see a reason not to have both, especially now that TF3D is available in panel form (and also more stable in that form if others reports are to be believed).

I agree 100% i'm using both and they both work great. I'm hoping someone comes out with a WVGA skin for spb mobile shell panel. If not who knows i might try and make one myself.
Ever so slightly off topis but....
I've got the normal version of SPB MS installed rather than the free panel version. I can access the normal today screen at any time.
A senior member called GREATBAL has made some fantastic skins/mods for mobile shell, these worked perfectly on my Kaiser but unfortunately due to screen resolution they don't work on the X1.
Anyway I have PM'ed GREATBAL and he gave me this reply
'The Xperia-ish theme won'twork on the X1's screen resolution. But it would be very interesting to get hold of the graphics files in the X1 so we came make it into an MS theme. Those graohics files would be hi-res and suitable for VGA/QVGA devices. The images i used are drawn from scratch using photoshop based on screenshots i found on the net. but they are low-res suitable for QVGA devices only'
So if anyone can send these files to the great GREATBAL you never know what magic he could do for us!!
Greatbal has a wvga spb mobile shell theme. Ultimate Windows 7 or something like that. I doesn't work on the spb mobile shell panel but it might work on the full version. I dunno.

yup that is it. I took some screen shots and they are shown here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407487&page=64
I followed the installation instructions in the post and installed this last night including soft reset.
It crashed my X1!.........but soft reset again and its been fine.
It's an OK theme (for the time being).
Hmmm it didn't work for me at all. The theme is chopped off on the bottom.
Does anyone know how to change the default view on the panel version of SPB Shell so that it displays the 'home screen' when opening rather than the 'shortcuts' view?
I hope I've used the right terminology, I'm a bit of a noob.
Cheers,
Ronnie
Bump...
Thanks in advance.
Hi all,
on yrgo's forum, you can find first beta version of the yrgoManager - an application used to create your own skins, wallpapers and color themes in your PC, so you can make it comfortable.
Link: http://2daysoft.com/yrgo/forum/viewforum.php?f=19
EDIT: this application is used to change skins, etc. in yrgo only - windows mobile shell replacement (take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3623606)
Regards,
Luky
can i create wm6.5 skins??? tsk
yrgoManager is used to change skins in yrgo, not the whole WM.
