MT3G on Docomo Japan - myTouch 3G, Magic General

So I bought a T-Mobile 3G off ebay, unlocked it.... Phone works great...
but the 3G... docomo has 3 apns.... one regular, one for what they call bizhodai (their unlimited plan) and another presumably for 'settings'.
Heres the kicker, the phone will connect to the two that are not unlimited... but not to the unlimited APN... I also have an HT-03A (the MT is for my girl), I put my SIM in the MT and no love... Her sim in my HT-03A and instant connect... I am perplexed...
I could understand if none of the APNs worked... maybe it is a different freq, but two work...
any ideas...
anyone know the tmobile freq?

I found this, http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/board/message?board.id=myTouch&thread.id=1646
Restrictions
Roaming in Japan requires the use of a special Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) or 3GSM handset. T-Mobile does provide you with the ability to rent one of these handsets; see Rent a Handset for more information.
So there ya go, a MyTouch 3G is NOT compatible with Japan's network. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but hope dat at least now you've got your straight answer.

So, now what does that mean...? Can one APN be on a differnet freq?
More searching... So the ulimited APN i use on my HT03A mpr2.bizho.net wouldn't work but the non unlimited one mopera.net would...so searching google and guess what leads me back to XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470062&page=4 where they mentioned another bizhodai APN mpr.bizho.net (notice its missing the '2' from my APN) but it works... I am going to ask docomo tomorrow if that apn will work with the price capped data plan...
so MAYBE...heres hoping...

I will post the update just incase anyone else trys this...
I went to Docomo, and went over and over with them about adding a MT3G IMEI to the filter...no love.
Long story short, I ended up buying another phone directly from Docomo, only because it would be capped at 5900 yen... But the MT3G works on softbank like a dream, capped and all, because apprently they do not filter IMEI... Yet another Fail, Docomo. (though from where they are standing, a win)
So let me state this clearly, for you to have a capped 3G connection on Docomo's Bizhodai plan... you must be able to connect to mpr2.bizho.net, anything else and you will likely be looking a hefty bill...

So does this mean that ultimately you weren't able to use the unlocked MT3G with Docomo?
When I went to talk to the Docomo people yesterday, I asked them specifically if I could get a SIM-only subscription and bind the IMEI of a handset I bought overseas to their biz-hodai plan. They said that they could do that. I haven't actually done this yet, as my handset has yet to arrive from the states, but I'm going to give it a try anyway.
Did you purchase her SIM explicitly for the MT3G, or did you just take it out of another phone?

No she already had a phone, so no I did not by a sim only... Congrats if you can get that to work for you, but No I never got it on the biz-ho plan. The phone worked fine, just not capped.

Okay well, I'll let the forum know how it goes. Phone is due to arrive this week sometime. Hopefully by Monday I'll have it up and running with the capped plan.

Wish you luck on this. I also asked docomo the same question and was told that no non-docomo IMEI could be used on docomo. And do be careful with the APNs ne.

Update on this:
Got the phone, took it to Docomo and got on their BizHodai plan. BizHodai APN did NOT work, mopera one did, but wasn't capped. Nobody at Docomo shop or telephone support could tell why or do anything about the absence of capping. Cancelled with them and took the phone to Softbank.
Signed up for a 'silver' account with Softbank, able to find the APN details online (lady in the shop didn't know them), and phone works fine, with cap.
One caveat, however. While connected to Docomo network I was able to see the paid apps in the Android market. With Softbank, I can only see the free apps.

Yeah, thats excatly the end solution i came up with... but didn't want to leave docomo...
try "market enablier" (google search it) and it will get you the paid apps on the market..
I do want to mention, as a word of caution... I have heard, that unless you are useing a black softbank sim that no matter what apn you connect to you are not capped. The black sim is ones sold with the iphones only, the silver sims will let you connect to the capped apn, but does not cap... good news is if you sign up for an iphone with contract, you can get the 8gig iphone 3g free, so you aren't really out...
Be careful brother...

Docomo to allow IMEI registration
within a few months, anyone should be able to use a T-mobile branded G1 or mytouch on Docomo

I have the silver sim, and it definitely is capped using smile.world APN. My Jan statement said I used > Y100k in packets through the 17th, but I was only billed Y8k.
This month I'm up to 300k so far in packet usage. Living life on the edge!

It depends on what you mean by 'work'.
If you want 3g.. then you need a Rogers HTC Magic 32A from Canada. This will most likely be at a premium since there are not too many floating around and the phone is a 32A. I'm also on ATT and ebay'd one for 450.
If you are okay with 2g EDGE, then you can just unlock a T Mobile myTouch 3G 32B. It will not be able to use the ATT 3g. The two networks operate at different bands of the spectrum and are not compatible.
The latter option will be cheaper (350-ish) as there are plenty of myTouch 3gs floating around. I'm even selling one because my brother didn't like it.
As a frame of reference, I raced the two phones on the ATT network, loading NYTimes.com and the 3g came in at 16 seconds, while the 2g came in at 26 seconds. It's not an earth-shattering difference, but it depends on how reliant you are on bandwidth.

Oh, you need to be a bit careful about unlocking Rogers HTC magics. There are a few batches, where Rogers changed the codes, after receiving them from HTC.
Unlocking services won't work and Rogers does not give out unlock codes... period. It does not matter if you purchased the phone at full price (610CND). They claim it is to keep them from being liable for the user experience outside the Rogers 'network'. This is a load of bull****, but they won't budge. I managed to somehow get one of these little suckers and really took a hit for it.
okay cool i found a mytouch for 150 im cool with the 2g so how do i unlock it once i get it
eBay again
Buy and unlock code on eBay. There are a few vendors that run skype and you can have in in 10 minutes. Search eBay for "swiftunlocks" or email hime at [email protected]. I have bought 2 from him and they work perfect.

Officially... yes.
However, ATT can only differentiate smart phones (30$ unlimited data plan) from the dumb phones (15$ unlimited data plan / 10$ family unlimited data plan) if the IMEI is in their data base.
In the case of a phone from T-mobile or any other carrier, the IMEI is not available to ATT, so the phone will show up as 'Unknown Device'.
Thus, if you ask for a data plan, you can get the dumb phone one.
As long as the APN settings are correct, you will get 3g for half the price.

Thinking of getting HD2, Anyone has it for ATT? Help me make up my mind

Hello guys I have been a HTC guy since I got my very first TIlt, then my FUZE, and my PURE. All of these phone were ATT branded, and I used the 10/month medianet plan.
They are now catching on and have changed my plan to the 30/month one. I do not like this since I do not really use the web. So I did some research and need your help.
I know if I get a T-Mobile branded one I wont get 3G, butt what if I get a non branded HD2, would I get 3G then?
If I were to get a T-Mobile or a non branded HD2 would ATT still change my medianet plan to a PDA plan? I know they are doing this with non branded Nexus 1 phones but I am unsure about HD2.
If you have this with ATT tell me how you use it, do you have 3G, what web plan do you or if you do not.
Thanks, I hope on buying one of these soon.
well i'm a att guy... but.. i'm going over to t-mobile.. due to this phone... cheers

I know what you mean dawg but T-mobile has poor service in my area, they only offer edge.
I am switching to T-Mobile for the HD2, and the cheaper prices, Las Vegas has a big blanket of 3G from all carriers, at&t has been sucky lately due to the iPhone.
Even though they where my first carrier(Original at&t), they wont be my last. I cant wait to go Magenta.
As for your situation, you might have to settle for the retail price then just unlock it, since the service on edge for at&t rather than on T-Mobile.
i have it on AT&T i get 3G speeds in san diego just fine works great. my version is the australian version from telstra.
been using the european version with at&t and edge speeds are fine (have access to wifi at work and home). i have been paying for the $10 data plan since October/November with no problems. At&t website lists the phone i am using as other after i had selected an old motorola razor i was using previously. So i am not sure how they detected and switched you over to their smartphone plan.
You'll need the Australian Telstra version to get ATT 3g. It costs like $800 for imported versions though.
I have been using my Euro version HD2 since Dec with ATT. Have been paying $10/month for data. Just signed another 2 yr contract with the Nazi's (yea, I know) and got a free Blackberry. When I registered the Blackberry.....or activated it with the new sim ATT had in it, I got a text saying I needed to pay for the $30 data plan. Long story short......I told them I wont be using the new phone, I will be using my HD2 that I have been using. Gave them the IMEI and they said that it was not considered a smart phone. They are such geniuses! Even though it is EDGE, I am quite happy with it.
I also called the next day and explained how I travel international a lot, and asked to get the unlock code for the new Blackberry. Had the code the next day, unlocked it, so I guess I will sell it and try to recoup what I am going pay over the next 2 years!
Been using my European HD2 since they first came out, on AT&T.
Works just fine.

They found out because, chances are, your phone is not SIM unlock...or you somehow stupidly give them your IMEI number. If you want to get back on the old $10/$15 medianet plan, call them up and tell them that you're using some old phone (like a razr) and would like to get out of the PDA/smartphone data plan.
I'm on AT&T ($15 medianet) and I would never think about jumping to a worser carrier/service over a phone. That's retarded.
^^ how about for a free phone bill??
as i said i'm att right now.. but i spend about 130 a month which is frickin insane... as a student.. my father offered me one of his lines that he has open anyways (kept open in case one of his clients needed a temp phone or service) and because he's already paying for it regardless.. i get it free of charge.. which in my opinion totally rocks... PLUS i get the HD2 which makes the situation even better....
but no, personally i rather keep att... the call quality and reception is just so good everywhere... i never drop calls.. nor does my antenna recieve less then full bars... and i have done my fair share of research.. and t-mobile's reception is kinda bad... and in my apartment complex.. (my sis has tmobile) i'll probably manage about 2-3 bars... yea.. totally sucks.... but as i said before.. free phone bill...cheers

Like i said, it's probably because the pure wasn't sim unlocked since it's AT&T branded (meaning that they already have the IMEI for that particular phone). I always keep a few unlocked dumbphones around (samsung x820 and samsung u600) just in case I run into situation like this...
AT&T service in Northern Chicagoland area simply sucks. I have AT&T phone from work and use T-Mobile as my personal phone service carrier - cannot compare at all. AT&T 3G appears to be somehwat faster (in miliseconds) but no drastic speed difference between the two.
Where do people recommend buying a Telstra HD2 and having it shipped to the U.S.?
Thx
I tried the TMO HD2 today and Tmo's signal sucks in my area.
I have a telsa hd2 and i use it on att and i get 3g coverage. it works fine. the only i dont like is i cant access the media mall that att users use to download games and apps.

MyTouch 3G from Craigslist: what about OTA updates?

If I purchased a MyTouch 3G from Craigslist and then used it on ATT, how would OTA updates work when released (from TMo)?
Are OTA updates possible via WiFi or do you have to be using TMo SIM to get it to work?
Can't get out of ATT contrac for a good while but keen to try Android phone.
Can I buy a $10 prepaid SIM from TMo (if that is indeed a possibilty) and use the MyTouch that way? I don't want to buy an extra monthly paid SIM or anything like that cause that would be a waste of $ as I currently have coverage. Hope someone in he know can help. Thank you.
If you purchased a MyTouch 3G from Craigslist and then used it on AT&T, you would NOT get any OTA update from T-Mobile because the updates are pushed through T-Mobile data connection, not WiFi. So even if you were using the phone on T-Mobile (say via a $10 prepaid SIM card) without a data plan, you wouldn't get the update either.
But I don't see why not getting OTA updates is such a big deal, as any official T-Mobile update will appear on XDA 10 minutes after it becomes available. Also, the joy of using Android is flash custom ROMs onto the phone, and custom ROMs are often WAY ahead of T-Mobile's.
Just so you know, AT&T will detect that you're using a smartphone and automatically sign up for a data plan (if you don't already have one) without telling you.
The myTouch is really crippled without a data plan though. For instance, the deal breaker for me is that you can't send or receive MMS (picture/video messages) without a data plan.
I know when I had my G1, I received the cupcake OTA over wifi.
I'm on AT&T and don't have a data plan.

How would ATT know I had a smartphone if the phone is a TMo phone that is unlocked? I thought they only knew about smartphones from "their" arsenal of devices?
Can anyone confirm for sure if you would need a data plan using a non-ATT (smart)phone?
I already have a data plan (GRRR!) that I "had" to have, so hopefully I could do all the "nice" things the MyTouch can do.
I phoned TMo and asked about a $10 prepaid card for a phone purchased on Craigslist but the CSR said I had to have a monthly tariff thingy with data. Was he just trying for a hard-sell or can I indeed just get a simple cheap $10 prepaid SIM and play with the unit until it can get unlocked?
Thanks for the help.

They do automatically tack on the data plan for people who buy the Nexus 1. They are only able to tell it is a Nexus One however because Google gave them a list of all of their phones IMEIs.
If you are using a T-Mo phone or from any other carrier, their is no way for AT&T to beable to tell what kind of phone it is unless the carrier the phone oringinally belonged too decides to share their IMEI listing with AT&T. Which they don't do.
but you already have a data plan anyways so it doesn't even really matter. What sucks tho is that you are paying for the data plan and you will be stuck with EDGE. You will not beable to use AT&Ts 3G network. You should have looked for a Rogers over a T-MO.

I'm not sure how but AT&T WILL detect that you're using a smartphone, regardless what kind of smartphone it is. I'm currently using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1i, which is not supported by any of the US carriers. One day, I popped my friend's AT&T SIM card (he had been using a RAZR without a data plan) in and voila, I was surfin' the net after less than a second over EDGE (the X1i can't use 3G in the US). The next day, my friend checked online and a data plan was enabled for his line. Luckily, he was able to turn it off but only after an hour of explaining. He was reprimanded by the AT&T rep for putting their SIM card into an unsupported device which could potentially cause damage to their network (WTF?!!!).

And yes, the Tmo CSR was just trying to sell you the data plan. When I had my myTouch, I was using it with a prepaid SIM card without data plan and it was fine. But, ON A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: you will need a SIM card with data plan to activate the phone. There is simply no other way around it. When I bought mine from Craiglist, I wiped the phone right on the spot and borrowed the seller's SIM card to activate it (your AT&T SIM card would work provided you have already unlocked the phone - which can be done on eBay for about $12). Luckily, back then the myTouch was still running Android 1.5 which allowed for rooting. You should do the same or don't wipe the phone until you have root it. However, if the phone is running Android 1.6 or higher, well, you're out of luck. The process is a bit more tedious. Check theunlockr.com for how-to.

They activated a data plan on your buddies account because you put his sim into your smartphone and started browsing the web with it over edge.
Did you think they weren't going to charge you for that?
They didnt know you had a smartphone. They knew you were browing the web using data.
If you hadn't begun browsing the web, they wouldn't have tacked on the data plan. They tacked on the data plan because you began using it.

[Q] HD2 USA and AT&T

Hey I'm gonna buy a tmobile HD2 from a friend of mine and I want to know if it can be use with AT&T.
Also do I haave to get a data plan with this phone?
Yes it can be used with AT&T but you will not get 3G speeds due to the specific bands the phone has.
I have an international HD2 and am using it on AT&T without data plan because AT&T does not have the IMEI for my phone in their database and thus cannot automatically add the smartphone plan. I'm not sure if they have the T-Mobile HD2 IMEIs.
I too have an international HD2 and am runing it on AT&T. You can't use the T-Mobile US one - the bandwidth doesn't work on AT&T only an international version will work.
I was going to say the same thing they said
You can use an Australian HD2 with AT&T and get 3G speeds. Mine works just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633404
I am running an unlocked TmoUSA HD2 on AT&T and it works just fine. Other than the fact that I have no 3G with this on the AT&T network. I am very happy with the performance since I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. I have to drive 15 miles to get into 3G coverage area.
Yeah Baaaby AT&T .... not!!
When in the hell is AT&T going to take expanding their 3G coverage areas seriously? I wonder what it feels like to be the AOL of the cellular world, all those customers and so little speed. This really sucks bigtime!

I used a T-Mobile HD2 for 5 months on AT&T without any problems except for no 3G. I used the $10mo data plan and still am. I now use a Telstra HD2 and enjoy full 3G coverage on AT&T. Both HD2's are unlocked and yes, the AT&T sim works fine. Just don't walk in to their store and expect them not to hammer you with the $30 data plan.
There's a real nice fellow from Australia that sold me my 2 HD2's. Very honest and reasonable. If you want his eBay ID, anyone can PM me and I will forward it. Beware of other internet store sellers! Some are selling the same phones for $100+ more and some people have been either screwed out of their money or have gotten refurb/used phones. Honesty is in short supply these days so be careful.
I unlock it... Just call T-mobile and ask for the pin that was yesterday and today got it by email.

It IS mandatory, that applies to ANY smartphone. Whatever you do, DO NOT tell them you are using any smartphones. iPhones are all in their database since they were the exclusive dealers for them so it's impossible (as far as I know) to use an iPhone on AT&T without them nailing you for a $30 data plan since all the IMEI's are pre-loaded in AT&T's system. At least with the HD2's and other non-AT&T branded smartphones, they don't have the IMEI's and can't just hit you with the data plan.
It's in their contract, any smartphone use requires a data plan. Of course, they also hit you for a tethering fee as well for the privilege of using tethering (computer to smartphone connection) even though there's nothing special about it nor does it use the data service any differently. Just another way for AT&T to stick it to the consumer.

For those with GTabs going straight to Tmo's site

Just spent about four days with TMobile on the device getting connecting on their network (Even had a ticket). Finally found out that they had me on the wrong data plan. The device needs the Web Connect plan to connect. Being so new of a device, they had the wrong plan provisioned for me as I went straight to WiFi and did not check. I currently have my device subsidy unlocked to use my AT&T and added the Ad-Hoc supplicant which I thought was the cause. After several days, someone finally realized the plan was incorrect since a Tmo Blackberry Sim worked perfectly fine.
Moral of the story, have them check to see if you have the Even More webConnect Overage Free Plan for $39.99.
Same thing happened to me and I didn't discover it til yesterday... had been using wifi all along... but in my case it was because I was on a voice plan...
effing Tmo.... just about to kiss 'em goodbye. Which makes me sad because AT&T is really not an option for me... and I don't think phone calling will be enabled on VZ or Sprint.

we all new this, this is nothing new...
I cancelled my Tmobile account today. After I got the Tab, I went to my account online and switched it to a voice/data/txt plan, which took effect today. I quickly tested it, and It was blocked, so I called up and cancelled.
The first customer service girl said "Awww!" when I told her I was cancelling.
The second one asked if I would like to be switched to the proper web connect plan. I said no thank you, your service plans are inadequate for my needs.
They just lost my $2300/year
Asshats!
Yeah... I think I'm heading down the same path... after I discovered that the voice plan was causing me to be redirected to Tmo on 2G/3G... no flashing, nothing else ... I just figure, **** 'em.
If they want to make it this difficult to use it as a phone, when AT&T didn't go to any of the efforts Tmo has gone to to block calling plus data, it's just not worth fighting them anymore.
Sadly, this is probably the death knell for the Tab for me... unless I just resign myself to carrying two devices... or perhaps I might try the ATT and see if wifi will work okay... their 3G service is terribly spotty in my area.
If it's only going to be an internet device and not a phone, might as well go for the less than half price Archos 70...
Call me stupid i guess, but im gonna try to stick it out and see what happens. Is there any prepaid plans out there that will work with att and get 3g? I dont want to have to get a contract with them if i do have to give up on tmo.
Sent from Jt's Samsung Galaxy Tab!!
Edit: just read turckboattruck thread. Omit question about a prepaid att plan.
Lol
I don't know if it's just because you guys generally do everything bigger in USA compared to over here in the UK, but why would you even want this to be the only phone you're carrying around? It's huge, and you have to use it on loudspeaker if you're not connecting the headset.
How is it that it wouldn't be a hindrance to you guys?

It's just the fact that U.S. carriers decided to not include the phone feature that is getting us to want to do it. if it came with phone half of these discussions wouldn't even exist(obviously).
Change IMIE
Can we change IMIE on t-mobile tab to get what we want. I think we all know tmobile is blocking tab because the IMIE # is in their database.
I wanna stick to t-mobile bcoz I have 5.99 Tzones unlimited data plan. Im currently using iphone 3G.
I can use a TT Tab but then it works only on Edge. What Im looking for is a Nexus 1 like Tab which can be used for 5.99 tzones plan.

Clear the US carriers seem to think that if they don't include voice, you'll be forced to have two contracts - one for the phone and one for the Tab. The irony is that most people wouldn't even attempt to use the Tab as a phone except in a few limited situations (note, I said most, not all! ), so would've probably had two contracts anyway.
I find it very hard to believe that all 4 major US carriers came to this conclusion on their own, at the same time, which would lead me to believe there's a cartel here.

Dave
I feel sorry for our American friends.
Here in the UK, We can get iPhone on any network at very competative prices and the Galaxy Tab Standalone for £469 unlocked and use any network we choose with it, including Phone, DATA, etc..
Where in the US the networks seem to take advantage of the monopoly they have and charge rediculously high prices for equipment and services.

Sure looks that way doesn't it, not that I would buy an iPhone again. But in the case of the tab, I can't believe they actually locked down the phone capabilities.
