THIS IS A THREAD FOR CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK AND UNBIASED OPINIONS. IF IT DOESN'T APPLY TO YOU, PLEASE HIT "BACK".
Hi, im currently waiting for the Touch HD, but the past few days have posed many questions with much criticism going on about HTC's new flagship product. This has brought up the idea again, whether i should go for the iphone. Im no fan boy and i would value anything thats factual and unbiased.
this are my most important needs for the phone off the hat, in order of importance.
1) text messaging. i need a good keypad to message and such. i know the touch hd uses a resistive and the iphone a capacitive. but bearing in mind that the resistive screen used by the touch hd is by far the best, is it really far of from the iphone? If the apple gets a score of 100%, what would the touch hd's touch screen get?
(i sorta do MMS messaging at times too)
2) web browsing, the easy of web browsing is kinda important. less the navigation but more of page viewing. this is where the 3.8" screen comes as a huge plus. i know navigation on the iphone is more user friendly, but in terms of amt of information in a scree, is the touch hd much better?
3) videos. just one question, can the touch hd watch SMOOTH and CLEAR videos with the correct codes and resolution(reasonable size please)?
4) extra stuffs. i know that WM has many 3rd party software out there, much more than the iphone. ignoring the design and such, does the boundless quantity of software provide sufficiently functionality as compared to what the app store offers?
5) the occasional picture. iphone or touch hd? in terms of speed and quality.
Edit: I do have tons of time on my hands to tweak the Touch HD to my liking and such. lol.
(Just gotta wait for it to be out in Singapore...)
Note: I dont appreciate flaming nor do i feel i deserve any :/

1) no answer cos I dont have my HD yet
2) same as 1)
3) use Core Player v1.2.5 and it will work out of the box
4) Absolutely...Wait another month and you will find plenty of stuff exclusively for the HD. Thats xda any people in here are outstanding
Hope could at least help a little.
Ascenca
Sounds like the HD will be more up your street.
I think you'll probably get bored of the iphone interface after a while (with the HD you'll be able to customise and tailor it to your needs)
I'm waiting for my HD to be delivered within the next 2 days (fingers crossed), but according to the slashgear review, the HD has the best resistive touch screen available (almost on par with the iphone).
The touch experience is extended over to Opera so should make web browsing a doddle.
Plus you can play high res div-x videos smoothly - not sure about other formats.
Here's the review - http://www.slashgear.com/htc-touch-hd-slashgear-review-part-2-0721942/
With respect to camera quality - it'll have to be the HD as you've got a 5MP camera (i know pixel resolution isn't the only factor for measuring quality but it has to beat the iphones 2mp) plus you'll also get more options on how you want to capture images not to mention the video recording ability.
Hope that helps !
I've had both (got the first iPhone when it came out in the US and got rid of it a month later for various reasons - mainly things that it just didn't do well or at all that I really need from a phone) - but I was struck with the UI and how good it was (the capacitive touchscreen I guess basically and how polished the visuals were supporting it)
Anyway, I've never really understood this ludicrous 'fan' loyalty mentality [over EITHER brand]- it's an effing phone, it's not like a member of my close family make them or anything.........anyway....I digress....I can't answer all your questions, as one or 2 are a little technical and require more detail than I can provide I tihnk - plus I've only had the HD a few days and so I've not managed to try certain things (will try video in a sec though
1. Txt messaging .... '=IF IPHONE=100%,TOUCH_HD=97%,IMO' ;-) (seriously - it's v. good, I think so anyway)
2. Screen 'volume' browsing advantage - it tips a little in favour of the HD for obvious reasons - not much in it really though - definintion is fantastic on the HD
Jumping to 5. The HD just gets it I think - speed is about the same IIRC but the screen definition on the HD blows the iphone away (and anything else I've seen quite frankly, including the diamond, if only because it has a smaller version of the same screen and was a bit flickery on the brightness)
HTH
FWIW - I really do like the iphone...but.....it just lets itself down badly on several points for me at this stage - it may get to the point in a couple of gen's time where it becomes a contender for me again - but IF I can get ANDROID onto my HD [oh please oh please oh please....] ....I feel the bar will be set waaaaay up high - too high in fact!
so the touch HD can be said to be more "open sourced", especially with lots more apps and such out there?

Oh certainly. But not just the apps, also the ROMs, radios, unlockers, SPLs and all the other stuff the geniuses here dabble in.
One more factor to think about is the actual time and energy you want to spend on your phone. Buying the HD (or any WM phone) and participating in XDA-Devs is a dangerous recipe. Most people I see on here (myself included) don't just set up their phones and live happily ever after. It is a never-ending and frustratingly enjoyable experience trying to make the phone work exactly like you want it to.
The iphone on the other hand, just works. But probably not exactly like you want it to
Having owned both... (well still owning HD now and it's a keeper so yes I am slightly biased):

For typing, the differences between any touchscreen become much smaller as all you do is press your finger down on an area contrary to sliding and brushing and such. The HD types better in that regard as there is more keyboard options (I really dig suretype) and even on similar keyboards (qwerty) the HD utilizes the additional screen height with some additional controls.
To answer the other question: well both screens are 100% to me, maybe the HD is 98%... The differences in responsiveness are so damn small I can barely tell. Behaves a little differently though, mostly depending on UI differences, not screen differences. But the HD has a sharper, cleaner presentation and both UIs are very good, so I prefer the HD, by a small margin.

HD hands down. The huge screen and high sharpness are all major criteria for me, and this is mainly why I chose the HD (and why it has its name ). Navigation on the iPhone is barely more user friendly, multitouch is nice for pictures but annoying/overrated for browsing... I really prefer the doubletap.
There is not much more information on the HD screen as only the widescreen factor gets you more info, but because of the super resolution it is a lot sharper and thus you don't need to zoom in as much to get readible pages. In fact, I do global reading/site skimming without zooming in at all. Iphone won't let you do that as easily.

I watch DivX mostly on it, using 800MB and 1,5GB files. I use coreplayer, perfect for me... I don't do benchmarks so I can't tell you the scientific performance, but if I see razor sharp 800*480 and smooth playback movies with super fast seeking, I'm happy.

I would not let the WinMo platform cloud judgement here. The Apple App Store is huge and only getting bigger each day, it's got great developer support. Don't buy into WinMo because of applications. IPhone has got apps for anything you need, just like WinMo, biggest difference is that WinMo has 10 apps for anything you need, so you got more choice
However, WinMo is much, much MUCH more customizable. Like I said WinMo has 10 apps for each IPHone 1 app, well it's like you got 10 OS versions contrary to 1 as well... WinMo is a broad term and IPhone OS is always the same damn thing, and all these kids got the same apps on their phones

HTC, Apple, Blackberry... Don't buy these brands for good camera, but yes, occasional picture, it's fine. You get the same quality from an IPhone and a HD, but the HD picture is much bigger (5MP contrary to 2MP), but sensor quality does not differ much.
But... Here comes WinMo again... Of course the HD camera lets you do 10 times as much as an IPhone cam, making it more suitable for the occasional picture.

True for the most part, well, it works ... But many software updates were required to get there Bad call reception (still an issue), locked OS features because they simply weren't ready yet, temporary freezes, lockups, horrible battery life.... It reminds us that Apple phones are made by the same mere mortals that would make any other phone
and most imporant of all, with HD you have Voice Command available. There is nothing even remotely close on Iphone i have htc x7500 and iphone. HD coming tommorow
Ok guys just trying to get opinions out there. Currently using the Touch HD. Came from a Nokia device so I love the speed of symbian compared to Windows. It seems like the time has come for me to figure out if I want to keep the Touch HD or not.
Pro:
I love the big screen.
It looks sleek.
Easy to flashfirmware and tweaking performance is fun.
Con:
Incoming calls is a little laggy. Sometimes calls come in as unknown.
Phone feels a slower than ones I've used before.
No TV-Out.
*Having a keyboard would be a plus. But without it is not a Con*
I'm actually debating getting rid of the Touch HD for either the Xperia X1i/X1a so I would gain a keyboard and overall use would stay the same.
Or I thought about getting the Nokia 5800 tube, so that I gain the TV-Out feature to display gps on my indash and have the feel of symbian again.
Or ultimate would be to get the new n97 which has a large screen and keyboard.
What do you guys think? I think the biggest thing bothering me is the phone feelings a bit laggy compared to my previous nokia phones.
try keyboard in landscape mode man it works very well.
incomoingcall work well to me too.
after using it i dont wanna come back with symbyan anymore
Sorry but you knew it had no keyboard when you got it so if it is a "con" and not a "pro", why did you get it in the first place?
well then I guess I should list it as a neutral thing. I would like a full keyboard, but I'm satisfied with the compact querty at the moment. So good call tboy.
I dunno, going to the X1 isn't going to do much for you other than the physical keyboard. It sounds like love Symbian so maybe just wait for the N97.
I have both Nokia n95 an htc HD, HD is much better! 1 thing above all: HD is fully customizable, and you can improve it with new official roms or with a lot of cooked roms.......
Hello
I have the HD and the Nokia Tube.
The Nokia Tube is crap.
Slow as hell, and the worst GUI i have ever seen.
Flash a few cooked roms first... see if that makes your HD the device you always wanted...
do you recomend any?
I also own a n95 and the hd, and the nokia is no match for the hd in any aspect. Once you get used to the hd big screen and lots of features, you wonder how you could waste your money in the nokia set.
The hd is fairly fast for me, the gps works much better than the n95's. It fully customizable, the battery lasts longer, the rds radio of the hd is much better that the visual radio of the n95 (in Spain the rds system is spread all around the country while the visual radio is scarcely used), there's a lot of sotware available for the hd... in summary, i would't change it.
But each user asks for different features so...that's just my opinion.

You could try SPB Full Keyboard
Symbian UI sux the biggest time ever!!!!
There is no Symbian or Nokia I have ever tried that is nice or fast, the N96 is a piece of s..t! I stompted on the damn thing into pieces, seriously, kept freezing and the menu's are a nightmare, menu's within menus within more menus.... The "cons" you mentioned are nothing compared to any Symbian.
"TV Out" its a gimic function of Samsung and Nokia, the quality of TV Out function is way way below VHS quality making it a whole waste of time IMHO, anyway just my 2 cents in a useless topic.
Perhaps Symbian seems more suited to your needs
I went shopping for a new HTC device yesterday.
I looked at the Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia X1, G1 and the Touch HD.
I found the Diamond's screen size to adequate, but the lack of storage card baffles me.
The Touch Pro was just to heavy but the keyboard was very useable + storage card.
The Xperia's keyboard felt better, but the weight killed it for me. The screen is also far too small to handle WVGA.
The G1's 16million colurs makes the same difference with the screen as an iPod. HTC really should move to 16M colours asap. The interface was great, but you can tell it is in its infancy. I will be watching Android keenly over the next year.
Then we have the HD :
The screen size makes a huge difference - 3.8" WVGA is the perfect size for this res (2.8" is borderline too small).
The device is the exact same size as the iPhone (I think the box matches Apple's packaging as well...) This fits nicely in the hand and feels very light.
The screen size also helps with finger inputs, even on the standard keyboard!
The device is fast. I found no lag running through the programs, even while leaving 10 open. The 512Mb RAM certainly helps there.
A hardware keyboard for me is a con. When I moved to one (XDA Mini S), I found it strange to get used, but percivered, when I moved back to an onscreen keyboard, I certainly did not miss the physical kb.
After playing with all 5 devices, I have payed up for the HD.
It'll be delivered on Tuesday.

davideuck, believe me!
Thanks for input guys,
I do like the ability to flash new roms as I am trying to keep up with Laurentius26 and the L26 roms. It seems the V7 seems to be pretty responsive. As far as the tube VS touch HD Speed comparison, thanks for the info.
On the TV-Out feature, I would only use it to display GPS on my indash so I can easily get around by getting a decent car mount I guess. I've been keeping up with that thead and haven't found one I liked yet.
Bringing up the point that symbian isn't as customizable friendly I guess it would advantage me to stay with the touch so that I can always flash different roms and see which I like better. And between the Xperia and the Touch HD, thats going to be a hard button keyboard VS big screen.
Now to go read up on some more interesting apps/games to install. Thanks again guys! Keep the input coming if you like! I appreciate it.
My first post here at xda, so forgive me while i get used to it ;-)
the touch hd is quite impressive as allrounder. i'm more than a little jealous of the screen compared to my own omnia.
but omnia is till my personal choise of today; huge internal memore (i currently use 16 gig + 16 gig sdhc) although it's 3.5mm jack is indirect, if does come as adapter in the sales box. it is a bit fatter than the hd though but not too much- 12.5mm. and it has the tv out u mentioned. anyway it is to my taste right now.
if u have the patience for future model i found some interresting ones here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/the_8_megapixel_samsung_i8910_records_hd_video_ready_to_roll-news-776.php
it seems the next generation of omnia. though rumor has it that it'll be running symbian instaid of wm... and by now i have gotten stuck on wm and its flexibillity. i'm not sure that i can go back. still if u look at its specks they doo make my mouth water- heh he.
http://www.gsmarena.com/toshiba_unleashes_the_tg01__the_ubersmartphone_to_rule_them_all-news-768.php
this one is a pure wm platform wich seems to leave even hd trailiang in the dust. but remember that with a screen as big as 4.1 inches u may need to resow your pockets in all shirts and pants. still size matters when using gui's and you hd is already a good example there.
none of them packs a built-in thumpboard though. for that u may need to to go n97, touch pro, xperia, HTC dream or G1. i've no experience with android yet. but as for wm's i hear experia is annoyingly slow, and if u already have trouble with the speed of the HD u may need to stay far away from this one. all of them packs better screenresolutions than omnia, but the benefits of higher resolution without bigger screen on these devices is argueable. on 3.2 inches i don't miss the extra pixels on windows mobile.
a good thing might be if others told about their experiences with various models. my dad for one would never trade in his HD for my omnia. but if i had to buy a new one today i'd still choose it over the others out there.
needs and tastes differ.
a little off toppic- sorry.
does anyone know if if it possible to mod s60-5th the same way as SPB and PointUI does it for wm? my only experience with it is n93 wich i kept as my primary for one and a half years. never thought of costumizing it though. and i've fallen in love with it on wm.
Cheeze,
I have the same problem.
X1 will have the same problem in terms of the lag.
keyboards are good, but you dont need them as much, you need to get use to the touch screen... give it more time...
If you want something just as good as the HD with no Lag, go iphone, but then you drop alot of good things with the HD.
i did at first contemplate selling off the HD and going in for the iphone, but i have used the iphone, and liked it for the whole 2 months i had it before i went to a smaller phone... and then to the HD...
the iphone was basic to what i needed it for, the hd works perfectly...
let me tell you, after 3 months, you will be fine with the hd, but the lag will increase... especially in calls... and if you are like me.. with an ever increaseing phone book addess list.. it doesnt help... due to work, my phone book is now at 500+, and that was after cutting it down due to the financial crises...
in all likelyhood i will go back to the iphone depending on what the next update is in July.. then in august will truely decide....
I to went from the HD to the iphone. I do miss the big screen and badass resolution but after a few weeks and jail breaking i dont even think about the hd or windows mobile for that matter.
Im currently looking to move from my Nokia E90 to The HD. I have never used a HD before so i cannot comment on it, but the Symbian email system is awful which is one of the reasons that im looking to move away from Symbian.
I have looked at the 5800 but it will be a "downgrade" from my E90. Also the N97 does look good but it only has 3 rows with the numbers intergrated into the top "qwerty" row.
That totally puts me off it
I've been looking over and coveting the HD for quite a while now and wanted to get some input from those of you with time using the device. Is it worth it? I've read tons of reviews and watched a million videos of the device and really, I am in love with it. I just don't know if I can justify the $700+ pricetag and the fact that I am in the US and can't get 3G (Not to mention the fact that 3G doesn't exist in my community yet).
I also saw the Toshiba TG01 and I think that phone is amazing. Although the guy that does the reviews for it has some nasty fingernails.
I want the HD now, but with HTC projected to release some 1Ghz processor phones later this year I am thinking about holding out for one of those.
I am currently using a Mitac Mio A701 which has been good to me for the past 2 years, but I need an upgrade badly...
Any input you guys could give me would be Very much appreciated!

Given the fact that you don't have 3G in your area I would strongly consider the HD. However since you seem like the type of guy/girl that doesn't buy a lot of PPC / PDAs it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait and see what is officially launched by HTC this year.
I personally like the HD. The huge draw back for me is the lack of 3G in the US. I'm in a strong HSDPA area and it was very hard to give up 3G. The screen size is well worth it though. The size difference between the Touch Pro (Raphael) is quite signifigant in my opinion. It's also nice to have everything bigger when you have big hands and big fingers. Lot easier to select what you want without having to pull out the stylus.
The screen is also very responsive for me. I also like the fact that HTC put a 3.5mm standard headphone jack on the HD. I use the headphones from my Zune on the HD and it works perfect.

One thing I didn't mention is I work for a university and they have wireless over the entire campus so that would be nice as a kind of replacement for 3G since a lot of my time is spent there. The screen size is something that really has attracted me. I tried using the iPhone for a day and only made it about 3 hours before I decided it was awful. Windows Mobile is my home, so the HD fit into the category of having a screen I was very attracted to. The 3.5mm audio jack is awesome too... I forgot about that.
Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!!!
I think Htc Touch HD is fit your most requirement.
of course Toshiba TG01 and Htc 1Ghz processor phone must be better. but the price will not be the same.
you'll never get a perfect machine because the perfect one is the next.
HD is a perfect phone for me, the size;the screen;the battery and the running speed..everything makes good performance.
I like it and I think I will not change it within 2 years.
just keep in mind that the major drawbacks of the hd are the slow and flash-less camera, the lack of good and working hardware-accelerated graphics drivers and the occasional stutters every now and then when you play music...
if those are not big issues for you, go for it
I recently upgraded from an Omnia to an HD and I'm so pleased! The camera on the HD is not nearly as good it seems but everything else about it is great.
Put it this way I've always been pleased with other smartphones/winmo phones I've owned, but I'm delighted with this.
The HD is to Phones as Casey Ryebeck is to cooking.
Three major points to take a decision :
- need or not windows mobile
- need or not a keyboard
- need or not a 3.5"+ size screen
If the answer is I want a pdaphone under winmo with a big size screen, and I do not need a keyboard, you will love the HD.
My previous love was a XDA Flame who was the only one in this category, during roughly 18 months.
Moreover, I have had a lot of pda or pdaphone under winmo from 3.5, and I cant tell that this one is most finished of all. HTC has made a good job.
And last but not least, even if HTC has made a good job, you can continue to have support of the XDA Devs to get even better rom.

They're software issues as far as I know... so in time I expect they'll be solved.
I think the HD is an amazing device. Of course there will be one out in the near future that will have a little more functionality. But I can't see many things that are necessary that the HD isn't capable of doing or emulating.

I just got my Touch HD yesterday. Wasn't sure if I wanted it because I love 3d speeds, but went with it anyways. I really, really, like this phone, way better than my ATT Tilt. It seems faster as just about everything, but internet, but browsing the web is not too much slower. For Youtube and stuff you just have to wait longer for the stream to start or use an Open WIFI.
What really makes me like this phone (so far), is the large screen and fast responce (most of the time).
However I have found a few problems, 1st I could not get it to talk to my PC. Tried on my laptop and worked. I had to un-install the Windows Mobile Device Center off my PC, then re-install from the inclosed CD. Worked perfect after that. Another problem isn't really the deviced fault, it is some programs I have from my old WM dont work well or at all on it. I also miss the real keyboard, but getting used to the touch only one (so over time will like it better).
The camera isn't that slow, at least on mine. It is better then the one the Tilt has all around. I have had no problems taking pictures with it so far, seems to work pretty fast for a device that has to focus before taking that is that small. Sure a real digital camera is faster, but they also are meant for taking pics only.
I have waited faithfully for a long time for Android, but now I have fallen in love with Diamond2...
I am a student, and will mostly need the phone for entertainment purposes. For my use, (mostly internet, skype, taking the occational picture, watching .avi's, mp3, old school games like nes or scummvm), which one would you pick? It's important for me the the phone is fast and responsive, and that it can edit .doc files (word, openoffice, something like that). I also would love for it to have a file-organizer (something like norton commander would have been excellent), ability to run and install files from the phone directly, and the ability to download with it (torrents, etc) and if possible, stream online content. So basically a mini-computer. Which phone do you think is best for me? I do not care about calender, email (e.i outlook) integration, or anything that has to do with planing and\or actual work, in other words
Also:
Do you belive android will get ported to the diamond 2 in the forseeable future?
So to sum up, Should I just go for the Diamond 2 or wait a month or two for the Magic (thats the earliest it will be released here in norway)?
im not an expert at this (ive had no luck with my herald), but if you check around, there are diamond android ports.
most likely, they will be on the diamond2 if they r on the 1st one.
winmo - buisiness/planning/work
android - consumor, but can do buisiness and work
(i can say this because, like i said, i had a herald, and i have the dream)
ur choice buddy ;]
just want to add my opinion. I have had 4 WinMo phones in the past, currently have the Blackstone, which im trying to get rid of. Anyways, I am a "medical" student, who really doesn't use all the features that can be found on a WinMo phone. I have played with a friends G1 and was honestly amazed at how much it just "fit" with me. I know I will probably be bashed for saying this, but phones like the android (G1) and the Iphone are really what I am interested in now. They are simplistic to use, but still can outperform your normal plain old phones. For me, if the G2 Magic doesn't wow me when it hits the U.S. shores in a couple of weeks, than I will probably purchase an Unlocked Iphone. Now, you have to base your decision on what you will use the phone for, especially if you are a student. This is my opinion, but if you are really into business type stuff where you would need all the necessities of a PC than go with the Diamond. If you want a cool, visually appealing phone that isn't as powerful as the Diamond but still gets the job done! than go with the G2.
I agree with redrazr's post above, but I would also like to add that for me a big part of going Android was to be part of something huge, right from the start. I mean, the first Android phone (the G1) has been out less than eight months and Android is already this good? That's pretty damn amazing. WinMo fanboys won't like this, but give Android eight months more and it will blow WinMo out of the water in every single aspect.
And no, WinMo 6.5 (and not even WinMo 7) will not revolutionize WinMo since they're still based on the same old crappy, sluggish platform/core. My understanding is that WinMo 8 will be the first WinMo based on a completely new and/or revamped core, and won't be out until 2013 or so.

He he, I have a D2 and I will not flame you for supporting Android (but then I am not a microsoft fanboy at all, I am typing from ubuntu right now ).
The problem with the smartphones imho is that they still are differentiated using their OS, sometimes even from the carrier customization. Their are more carier network toy than than their are your own toy, while they should be judged on their design, hardware specs and support only imho. Like a PC, where you can install any OS and applications you want, and are even expected to do so.
Thanks to xda-devellopers, HTC phones are closer to what every smartphone should be: an handheld computer with a large array of network connectivity options on which the user (you, that have paid for a device that is now your own, damnit ) can install the OS of his choice.
All that to say that Android should be installable on the TD2, and likely will be installable quite soon. Which is only the absolute minimum to be expected for an open-source OS for which google took A LOT from the opensource community to develop. Android should be installable on any device that has compatible hardware to run it, no excuses (HTC is at fault here, it should halp xda-develloper in the porting effort if not offering multiboot himself from the start, especially as all it's top-of-the-line smartphones are so close to each other hardware-wise).
So once the playfield is levelled and Android is installable on the TD2 (as it is on the HD, even if it is work in progress), I think that the TD2 and Magic should be compared from hardware and design alone. That's why I have chosen the TD2 (I like its design more, and a higher resolution screen is a big plus for me, I read a lot on my smartphone). But for other people the Magic could be better (digital compass, larger battery, more physical inputs like the trackball and additional buttons are its advantages imho)

Could not agree more. I'd pick Android over WinMo any day of the week, but let's be honest; WinMo phones have the best hardware. The few Android phones on the market definitely can't hang in that aspect. The only thing I can't stand about WinMo hardware is the resistive touchscreen they're stuck with. WinMo does not support capacitive screens as far as I know.
im going with the magic
i dont really like the look of the diamond 2 and the magics screen is bigger..and plus its going to have a 5mp camera for the US version ..i miss android..i went from the G1 to the Touch HD to the iPhone...touch hd was the worst expierence..windows mobile was dreadful for me...iphone..i dont feel as free with it but the variety of apps is quiet appealing to me especially after you jailbreak it..and android..lacked alot in the beginning but it was awsome i just hated the fact that i have to open the damn keyboard for every little thing i needed to type and i didnt want to wait for cupcake..but magic here i come
So in the last 15 or so months I have had 8 PDA's... 6 of them were WinMo, & Honestly I love WinMo for its versatility & The touchFlo interface is freeking awesome.. But.. I am using a g1 now & The only phone I am looking at other than it is the MyTouch (magic) the day T-Mo releases it (if not sooner).. The android OS has shown me to be much much more intelligently designed & Has yet to have any major issues (I have only had to soft reset the phone 2 or 3 times in the last 2 months).. The App Store is also a huge factor as well.. With free apps that actually work & improve the value of the device.. My last phone before this was a Touch Diamond (unlocked GSM) & I loved it for that beautiful High Res screen & The fact that movies on it were Absolutely Amazing.. Not to mention the small form factor.. But on the other Hand using the Cinema App downloaded for free from the android app store My movie playback looks almost as good (ie 1080i vs 1080p ish) & on a bigger screen.. Also Much less herky jerky to start & stop...
I am super excited for the Magic to come out, but if I had my choice I Would have kept my Diamond & Used Android on it & Somehoe managed to make a MicroSDHC work on it.. That would be my absolute perfect phone.. The Diamond 2 on the other hand I Think only had 1 thing over the diamond & thats the MicroSDHC slot as the increased screen size isnt in my opinion enough to be worth the increased mass.. Its like an inbetween size from the original diamond & an HD & I Dont think thats a necessarry spot to fill..
My 1 And only complaint with the G1 is the bulk & The Magic will obviously resolve that & only a Pocket test will be able to tell if it feels as small & easy to cary/use as the Diamond was..
The port for the diamond 2 will never be complete and always behind the current release of Android.
While the Diamond 2 has a higher resolution screen than the Magic the Magic is capacitive and performs much better in direct sunlight. Android will never run as well on the Diamond 2 as the magic.

Capacitive vs resistive is not so simple an issue: After testing the iTouch, I was all for capacitive, partly because it is more responsive to fingers, but even more because it offer a hard glass screen, much harder and durable than soft plastic resistive screen...
However, after testing the TD2 resistive screen, I must say that reactivity is almost as good as capacitive (not as good, but it is ok for me).
Durability could still be an issue, but the screen seems harder than my previous PDA, and with screen protection + flip case this is not an issue anymore.
BUT with resistive screen I have the possibility to use the stylus, which is very nice for accurate pointing (not relly needed for android, but very usefull for WM) and freehand drawing/ handwriting recognition. this may look like a gadget, but given the number of time I use my PDA as a notepad for quick drawing (abroad, when you do not speak the local language, a picture is worth a dozen words, and a thousand innacurate gesticulations ;-) ).
Capacitive do not allow the use of a stylus (except of the fat-and-soft tip variety, which I consider as completely useless, because it offer no real accuracy improvement), and, for me, this is a significant drawback. If a capacite technology evolve to allow for a pen-like stylus with pinpoint accuracy, then it would definitely burry resistive technology. Not before, especially for asian countries where the ability to draw characters is really useful.
For the direct sunlight, I agree: TD2 is not good under direct sunlight. Barely readable with high contrast large font text, but nothing more. Older PDA were better for this, and I believe you that Magic may be better too. I would be surprised if it was great, though, besides e-ink or passive LCD (reflective technologies), no screen has ever been great under direct sunlight ;-)
And for Android not running as well on the TD2 than on the Magic, yes, but the difference should be minimal: the hardware is almost the same, and Android is opensource, so the porting, once the bootloader/HARDSpl is done, should be quite straightforward...
I have owned winmo phones, played with an icrap, and now own a g1, and I will say I'd never ever go back. Android is always improving and will never stop improving. We have a few great developers that are always making this o.s. better. If you are looking for a phone for hardware, wait till one come out with Android. Otherwise get a magic. From what it seems like from your post, you'd be happier with android and the "wow" factor.
Being smaller and offering a resistive screen plus still being a good phone are there any advantages of the HD over the HD2?

woooop another manc i only got my HD like 2 weeks ago, upgraded from my touch diamond, i cudnt afford a HD2, so i got the next best thing lol
I too have a diamond, the reason i'm interested is that i'm outdoors ALOT! So a cap screen is rubbish with gloves on.
I could go for a S200 or TG01 but XDA DEV have no support for these. So a nearly new HD is tempting, but the performance of the HD will be no better than my Diamond other then the extra memory...
There are a few of us Mancs about
i have maybe 50% free ram, when using my HD and thats running Sence 2.5, on the diamond tho it soon shot up to like 20-30% free ram only using TF3D 2.1, but on the other hand, even tho the HD has a higher resolution, things looked alot sharper on the diamond, maybe cuz of its smaller screen size, i like being able to use a sd card tho, im not limited to 4gb like on the diamond and the large screen is gr8 for watching movies, The HD dosent offer that much more than the diamond tho so yeah the HD 2 is the better choice if you can afford it lol I could of got a TGO1 for £200 pound, £35 pound less than i paid for my HD, They got em in the fone shop nr picadilly station in town if you want one lol
Near the train station or those near Picadilly Gardens (bus station)? A TG01 would be tempting.
Near the train station, its just at the top off the hill, they got hundreds of fones in the windows, theres another site floating about called wmdevelopers or sumat, its ment to be like xda but for other wm devices, you'll be able to upgrade a tgo1 there i assume
I'd say you wait for some time -- see what comes out and maybe there will be something even better than HD2!!
As for me (a Touch HD owner) I wont go for HD2, because:
1) it has snapdragon - I was waiting for Tegra
2) There are some rumors about Tegra2 (two times more powerful than Tegra)
3) Im saving some money for a Yamaha WR125X , so I cant afford to spend it on a new phone, of which I will get bored after a few weeks
4) I've also heard some rumors about Toshiba next models (those after TG01) -same snapdragon cpu, but some nice features like 3speakers (good for me as Im a melomaniac)
if i didnot own touch HD already i would be sure to buy HD2. now for me there is no significant advantage of upgrading
right...i have a HD and cannot wait to get my hands on the HD2...im using a custom rom by L26 which uses the Leo interface. using half the power of the HD2, the Leo interface is bearable, very usable actually, however i can just tell that some of the nags will not be an issue with the extra 500Mhtz of processing power and double ram the HD2 will have. i think using my HD as a backup phone will surfice!
=D
I use a stylus almost 100% of the time so will not be buying an HD2.
More likely to get the acer, even after a bad experience with an F900, it's smaller, has better battery life, look's to be a bit faster and is far cheaper.
Couldn't care less about TF3D or sense.
My HD is OK for the moment, I would have preferred them to just change out the crappy msm7201 for snapragon, make the screen "a lot" more sensitive like the S200 apparently is, leave the rest alone.
The HD2 is a windows mobile iphone because of it's input and has no appeal to me because of it,I can barely stand not having a d-pad, let alone no stylus.
imo a resistive screen with a stylus is better on a finger-unfriendly windows mobile, isn't it?

Absolutely. There are all sorts of threads on the Leo forums where people are having real problems with the capacitive screen, and having to practice hard for a couple of weeks before they get the hang of just typing with the standard keyboard.
Also some folk are finding that the capacitive screen is registering all sorts of crazy inputs when they're not even touching it. Someone's got a hack hat seems to improve things, but I would say wait till WM7 comes out, and HTC have sorted their screen technology/sensitivity.
If the HD2 was resistive I'd buy it without hesitation.

I'd like to think issues between Microsoft and HTC would be resolved with wm7...........but if I was a betting man I'd bet that it would just cause more issues!!
Unfortunately for me (in the US) I have to wait until a branded version comes out. My Touch HD 8585 gets me 3G for now.

take in mind when u first brought the blackstone u had to get used to it just as well as any other phone u will buy in the future

when we first bought the blackstone we are surprised by the huge screen which enabled some finger operations on the finger unfriendly windows mobile, but, whenever you need a stylus, you got an option at least. Not really need to go over a learning and compromising process to get used to it.

Touché, I would tend to agree with you on this
Yep. The 4.3" Screen is just too big - not pocket friendly at all. That and the capacitive screen...
I would personally love to trade my HD for an HD2. The HD2 has a larger screen, led flash and most importantly: a 1ghz cpu... too bad it is not going to happen
