Recuring XV-6800 issues (keyboard, resetting) - Mogul, XV6800 General

I thought I knew the meaning of "a love/hate relationship" until I got the Verizon XV-6800. I love having a syncing calendar & contact list, Office Mobile, WiFi tethering with WMwifiRouter, & all of the other software available for the Windows Mobile OS. Unfortunately I hate the durability of the phone. It seems it can't even stand up to daily use. I'm now on my sixth replacement which I've had for 5 weeks now. Suddenly it's having the same problem the 2 phones prior to this one had; dropping keys, not responding to input (keyboard or on screen,) & randomly resetting upon hitting the power button.
I'm posting this here not just to complain somewhere, but more to see if anyone has had any similar issues or has any recommendations. I doubt these problems are the hardware, so I'm starting to wonder if anyone may have dealt with similar problems by flashing a new rom. I've considered it for GPS functionality, but if it would solve these issues then I'd definitely be all for it.

It is likely a hardware problem. The mogul a becoming way outdated. I would upgrade if you dont have gps abilities. I would think that means you have WM 6.0 is is old itself. What is your carrier. Please update it in your profile so help is easier to come by.

Alright, updated that. I'm with Verizon. It's really annoying to watch them lock down GPS on their phones, only to change their mind, and open it up on other phones just leaving XV-6800 users hanging.

Gps is easy to get going if you have a data package. Not as easy if you don't have one. I can help you get gps if you need it. Also what is your rom version under device information.

Ya, I've got the data package, and I've had GPS in the past using Valhalla (until VZW shut it down.) I'd love to have it back! It looks like I'm running 5.2.19212 (Build 19212.1.0.3)

If you had vahalla before then you have MR1/2 then it is easy. Just install the serf cab for vahalla then *22899 and gps works again. This assumes you have vahalla already installed. If not reinstall vahalla first then *22899. Then serf cab then *22899. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3555579&postcount=703
Let me know how it works.

As I said in my initial post, I've replaced this phone many times. The last phone that ran GPS was maybe 3 devices back. At the time I had flashed that to MR1 & windows 6.1. Since then each replacement phone has come to me with WM6 loaded. My current one says 6.1, is it a fair assumption that this has MR1? I guess I need to reinstall the Valhalla stuff as you mentioned. I'm going to get started on that process. Where's the best place to find the Valhalla cab to get started?

If you see under rom version:3.57.605.1 or 3.57.605.2 then you have MR1 or MR2. You are then ok to install the vahalla cab the serf cab using *22899 after each install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2936378&postcount=17

Ok, I'm using 3.57.605.2. I did install as you said; Valhalla, *22899, Serf, *22899, check location settings, check for active data connection. All successful, but no fix. Any suggestions? (I've been reading some other posts, and I'm afraid I'm running into the same problems.) Are there additional steps I need to be following?

I suggest you use HTC gps tool or gps viewer to check your lock status. Do you see any satellites come up under satellite view? Are you outside or near a window? And your location is turned on from 911 only correct?

No, it's still not getting a fix. Location is on, and the data connection is active. Still nothing. Are there any other steps I should try. I was reading some additional steps on the wiki...
I see that your running DCD 3.3.4 & 3.42.40. Since I've got this keyboard issue as well might that be another way to fix the GPS issue and simultaneously also the keyboard issue?

A new rom wont fix a bad keyboard. I suggest a hard reset and then install vahalla, then serf, then gps software. Then checking for lock. I have done this before so I know it works. Just for kicks try the vahalla cab attached because the link I provided could be different. I couldnt find a link for my version. Also I will ask again did you see any satellites under the satellite view for either gps software(blinking red dots).

The keyboard works fine at times; right now for example... I think the problem is software based. I'm just looking for a really clear how to on the flashing process.
I'll try working with the Valhalla cab you supplied, as I'm not sure if the version I used was the correct version. I know there's no uninstall for the valhalla cab, are ther certain files I should delete or just install over the old one?

Ok first i doubt it is software issue. Second why not just get another replacement handset, they are free. I dont know if installing the other vahalla over will work. That is why I suggested a hard reset. But if you dont want to do that now just get a another replacement and start with them on it.

Wifi to GPRS/3G

I have searched this and other forums and have not seen either this problem or an answer to it. Per AT&T's suggestion, I just upgraded to the new AT&T rom version that adds PTT and seems to have big problems. My current issue is that when I first boot up and connect via GPRS/3G all works well. When I get to a wifi area and switch to wifi, again all works well. However when I leave the wifi area (or just turn off wifi) I can't get any data via GPRS/3G. The balloon comes up saying it is connecting. The little "G" and bidirectional arrows in the top left indicate it is connected. However in the browser, it just continues to grind away with "Locating" in the bottom right corner until it finally times out and puts up a screen that says that the "page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost". I open the connection manager and press and hold the "Data Connection" icon until that goes off and try again, same problem. The only way I can get GPRS/3G data connection to actually work again is to reboot. Any ideas what is going on or how this can be fixed? Forgot to add that this is an HTC 8525. Thanks.
From your description I wasn't able determine whether AT&T's suggestion was aimed at remedying the issue, or if it's something that came about with the update.
Assuming the latter, you may want to try a hard reset first and run it for a bit before loading any other apps. Failing that, reflash the ROM. I had a lot of trouble with my radio when my 8525 was new, but it mysteriously cleared up after a few radio flashes.
Thanks but still a problem
Thanks for your thoughts here. I hard reset and reflashed.
Yes the firmware is the latest one that AT&T has suggested that everyone who had the older Cingular phones upgrade to. It provides the AT&T logo, the "push to talk" feature, and some other junk. I have contacted AT&T about this and their response was to send me a new phone that they claimed had the old firmware, since they have been getting a lot of complaints about the new firmware. It didn't have the old firmware and also it's SIM card reader appears to be broken. I called HTC and they said that they too have had lots of complaints about the new firmware quirks but had nothing to offer to solve them. Anyway, the old firmware had no problem switching between wifi and CGRS so I don't think it is in the hardware. On the other hand I'm surprised that nobody else is encountering the problem from the upgrade.
I'm having the same prob. Purchase three of these phones and the other users have little technical expertise. First I set up a sync with my office PC. Then loaded the ROM update. I run MAC's @ home had difficulty connecting to my home wifi. Finally determined that the 8525 would not accept the 13 key ASCII wep password. Needed to use the HEX. So I connected. Went to work and had problems syncing with my PC. Active sync had to rediscover the device. Now I'm back home and can't connect again. My Device ID changed names upon "resyncing" and I updated the Airport Base Station with my new name. I've spent a lot of time on this issue.. Maybe I need to send em back for an iPhone!
Well I found a solution to it
This is a great forum - though somewhat hard to search through thoroughly. Anyway the solution for me was to go back to ROM 1.34. Found how to do that through flashing from the micro card at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311704&highlight=cingular+8525+rom+version and getting the production ROM version at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades. Back to normal - everything works fine. Just for a trial, I also downloaded ROM V2.1.1 and it works find also - but sure seems a bit large - ends up with 42.9M of storage free vs V1.34 that has 50.25. Think I'll try the the memory expansion process at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298327&highlight=want+more+storage. That seems to at least provide a more than 9 megabyte smaller MBH file but I don't know what that translates to in memory usage yet.
Suspect there is a way to fix this problem but I haven't seen anything in the forums on it.

Finally Telus HTC Vogue WM 6.1/GPS rom update

Alright.. after much anticipation.. the rom release for the Telus HTC touch.
I randomly have been checking the site since I found the download page was updated on the HTC support page.. I ended up getting sick of the fact the the d ownload page was taken down so I copied down their server website and have been checking that. That is where the roms are actually upladed to so when the page is up it would link to the rom. Well on the server page (or whatever you call it) the telus update is there.
Check it out:
http://216.139.227.226/Telus/
So there we go. I'm going to flash my phone and see what goodies it does come with. Obviously rev A but I have my fingers crossed for gps too.
Oh and heres a direct link to the HTC support page for the Telus Touch... as you can see they havnt put up the download support page yet. So it was sort of a fluke I found this when I did as they havnt advertised it.

Great work.
Everyone download it ASAP, in case it disappears.
EDIT: It works, but I lost my internet connection in the process.

Had to call *22803 to program my phone (set PRL). That fixed the internet connection.
Rom works well, everything seems to be there. Have not had the chance to test GPS, yet.
will this work for bell phones too?
modified rom or official telus launch?
i have been waiting for this rom for a while. i knew it was in development and if you are wondering, the official rom will include rev a, location based services such as gps in google maps, tom tom and is bundled with Telus Navigator. It will enable threaded text-messaging, eliminate most of the freezing issues and help with bluetooth reliability. it also has an auto-pair with common passwords for bluetooth acc so it will speed up the process. my question is mainly to the starter of this thread? the file date i downloaded from the ftp site, is dated a few days ago and you said that you just found it. this does not seem to come from the htc site directly as most downloads come from members.american.htc.com unless thats just a masked address. simply put, is this an offical release or a modified version of what is out there?
i installed it and it works quite well, but i noticed a few odd things with it. the XT9 predictive is now not an option and its automatic for free typing fields, but you can't just turn it on by choice. internet explorer has crashed on me a few times, but this is minimal as i was trying to use the zoom out function on a content rich page. also, overall,t he device feels a little sluggish while going through the menus, but overall program support is speedy enough..
.
also, i happen to know for a fact that the telus rom version is:
3.00.661.1
but what you offerred as a download is:
3.07.661.1
why is it that this one seems to be a newer than the official one that telus released?
no, it wont work on bell, but the HTC website already has the bell update available... i don't believe the gps is unlocked for that model.
also, everytime you update the rom, all telus phones will lose their programming and you will need to OTASP... *22803 press 1 for english and 1 to program. as well, after it is done and the device resets... do the same, push 1 for english as well, but push 2 to upgrade the roaming list on your phone. it is import as you will have the most up to date preferred roaming list available from telus.
Hi mike.. I actually have NO idea.. The link I had (which is down now by the way) is the main server address for HTC.. if you were to go to say.. the altell support page for htc and click their rom download it will direct you to the http: 216.139.227.226 bla bla altell. same with Bell and the others. When I had orginall found this I figured that it would be uploaded there before there was a link put back up in the telus page since last time they did that and didnt have the rom I'm pretty sure they were bombarded with tons and tons of emails saying "what is going on wheres our rom!!!"
That said I installed it.. everything works fine. explorer hasnt crashed on me but I havnt messed around with it alot. I did however notice that my internet speeds arent any faster then they were before. I'm downloading between 700 and 850 kbps. Sometimes faster. But that was the same with the previous rom that was already on the phone stock. It also says EV in the top menu and 1x when its downloading sometimes. Not Rev A. The connection says CDMA1X (dial-up).
In regards to GPS I havnt been able to get tomtom to recognize the internal GPS yet. I tried using the gps launcher program which is supposed to prime it I think but still doesnt lock on. Once I switch over to my external bluetooh gps receiver it locks right away. So I dont even know if GPS works. I installed the telus navigation program and it said it was looking up the gps status and then found me on their map but I have a sneaky suspicion this might be through data.. I dont know though cause it was pretty damned accurate. Maybe I just need to try another gps priming program or something. Frustatrating though.
For those of you who have installed this do you have the same data info I have? the EV in the top menu bar? I could have sword I saw some screen shots of the rev A updates and it shows Rev A in the top menu. Maybe its cause I dont have it in my area? But I'm in London ontario.. so not some boon out area in the middle of no where.
Thanks guys!
ps.. any ideas on getting tomtom to work withought my external would be kindly appretiated as well. If anyone has been able to do so with this rom.
that sounds fair. i was just wondering if it was a hacked rom as i didn't want to bother upgrading it without something official. internet explorer hasn't caused me a single issue all day since then. i do find that the available memory has dropped to roughly 50 mb from about 70mb or so before with windows 6.0 and the device can get a little sluggish, but has yet to freeze on me once, which is a very noticeable improvement. thats interesting how the link was taken down and that would be really cool if we all got it in the nick of time. it wouldn't surprise me they pulled it with the touch diamond coming, it would be better to hold off and sell some of those and then launch the upgraded rom..
i can confirm gps works 100% for me. i used it in telus navigator and yes, it does use tower triangulation to assist in finding your location. i tried google maps and for some reason when i select "my location" it says my handset isn't compatible, but if you select use gps from the menu, then everything works 100% and my location shows right where you are and very accurately.
you said there is a program to prime the gps? where is that located? i still have yet to have an issue with it, but just in case. as well, i am unsure about the rev a icon, but it is still EVDO, just "revision A" i believe so i don't think the icon would change much
link is dead, I've uploaded the file to rapidshare.

This Rom Saved My Telus Vogue !!!!!
A huge thank you to Aaron for posting this rom. I had given up on my "bricked" Telus Vogue on Friday and if it hadn't been way too hot Friday to go, I would have already been to the Telus store and bought a replacement. Make a long story short (am a newbie too) something went horribly wrong with the flash I tried. The boot screen still displayed the old version (2.36 i think) but some random boot screen would follow and that as far as the boot got. I tried flashing tonnes of roms but just kept errorring out. I happened to sit at the pc today and noticed a few new posts and 20 min later came across the Telus update by chance. So for a final effort I slapped the HTC onto a USB and gave it a shot. The first try was unsuccessful as windows suddenly recognized the handset as a PPC rather than the mass storage device it had been seeing up till then and jumped to Found New Hardware Wizard. Or at least thats what I think may have interrupted the update. I shut down the update after waiting 20 minutes and simply started it again. It picked up where it left off and now I have my Vogue back even better than it was.
So the reason I went through this long saga is #1 to say thanks and #2 to let anyone that thinks they killed their Telus Vogue............INSTALL THIS ROM TO BRING IT BACK!!!!
JAY
Jay,
Glad that this rom worked for you! Saved you alot of hassle with Telus I'm sure. I am already on my second touch from them as I had a dark spot on my screen show up about 3 months after I got my phone. So far this ones been pretty good and with this new rom even better. I've been reading up on some ways to increas the GPS sensitivity and locking on our phones and will post it in here shortly.
Telus GPS to Bell
I will wait for someone to rip out the portion for the GPS to port it to Bell.
It should work in theory considering they are both the same phone/cdma.
Alright.. Thanks to

the settings should be as follows
Allowed = checked
Assistanc-Spherical = checked
PDE IP Address = 216.198.139.92
PDE Port Number = 8889
PDE Transport = IP
Position Calculation = PDE
This process is a bit.. not tedious or anything but just safty's sale for a good read look at the thread linked below for a guide to getting the QPST program working.. how to get it to connect to your phone etc. Side note.. You have to install the WModem drivers on your computer in order for it to connect properly and you'll need to install the GetSPC program on your phone in order to get the service programming code. That said.. you also need to download the QPST program (obviously). All of which (including the guide) here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TitanGpsFix
You'll need to run the GetSPC program on your phone. when you open QPST and you add the COM4 port and you open the service programming it should say your ESN HEX at the top put that code into GETSPC (again GETSPC runs on your phone) and then it will generate your SPC..in the service programming click read from phone and enter the SPC it generated for your and it should work. Thats the code you need to get access into the phone via QPST.
Now follow that in order to connect to the program and go pretty much to where you have to put in all that information ghettofreeryder gave us. Make sure you redial the ##3424 code to get out of the settings in your phone.
Then once that's done. Download a1Jatts smartgps cab which will activate the smartgps in the registry of the phone. Do a soft reset and you are good to go. Make sure you put in ALL the right information. I forgot to put in an 8 in the PDE Port Number at first so I had 889 not 8889. I didnt get any quicker locks so checked and put in the right number and worked like a charm. I got locks on 6-7 satellites in my basement with a few seconds.

Wow. That procedure was really frightening. I got it working and it was well worth the hassle. Your addition (missing configurations) was needed for me too. I hope for poor average Telus users that they release a final ROM with this sorted out.
Edit:
Every time, before using this, an already established data connexion is needed BEFORE looking for GPS satellite. The GPS will not establish the connection if it's not there. A simple solution is to open Google map and move the map up to a download is required BEFORE making the GPS satellite connexion.

The wiki procedure have been experimented on many device/carriers.
But I think "PDE IP Address = 216.198.139.92" is carrier specific.
On another forum, a Bell user reported using the Telus leaked ROM with that procedure but with IP=195.207.101.126 and got it working well.
no internet.
i tryed calling that number *22803 after updating rom from telus. still no internet connection. any reason why or what else i can do?
First time i tried with Telus support center, they gote me goiing thrue the french portion of the programing (#2). After that did not work, I did it again in English and it worked perfectly.
So here it is in detailes.
Call *22803 + press 1 + press 1 again. Whait till its done then the phone will reboot.
Call again *22803 + press 1 + press 2. Dont remenber if the phone reboots again....
This should work.
If not, try pulling out your batery fo 15 sec. Then restart your phone.
Thats all the info I have got from telus service.

Hey guys, XV6900 newb here trying to enable GPS...

I have been reading around and talking to friends about the Touch phone, and could use a little more assistance on enabling the GPS in my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robbie
have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.
Also a Newbie
I was wondering whether there was an app that I would need to install on my xv6900 to get the GPS working or do i need an external device like the TomTom Go series to get the GPS up and running.
Any help is much appreciated.

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.

7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

Is Usb tethering still working in 2.1?

Hi
Just tried to use usb tethering for the 1st time since 2.1 update.
All still looks like its working but no internet access. Tried under Linux on the same pc that always worked under 1.5
Also tried it on xp although I have never used it on there before I got the same kind of symptoms. Itooks like its all working but no internet, no pings, no nslookup.
So..... can someone try it and let me know if its working for you.
I am on T-Mobile UK. Ota 2.1 update, non rooted, stock Rom.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem. I have spoken to TMob UK support who have not yet managed to solve it.
I'm wondering if they've not set up the phone right in the 2.1 update.
Glad its not just me. I will report it tomorrow as well.
I have a mate with a desire on tmob - will do a side by side with him tomorrow (and confirm his is working) and see if it is just settings - although it feels like a deeper problem to me.
I'll post findings.
Same here - tethering works fine on my Desire, but the missus Hero doesn't work - hoping for some resolution soon
Just moved house so am without internet for the next week, so tethering is bloody useful right about now!
Have put a 2.2 rom onto my Desire and am using WiFi tethering for now, but doesn't help when I'm not in...
If you are rooted, there is an app that works fine.
But custom roms don't have this issue afaik. VillainROM 12 works fine with tether, as I had to use it at work to test external connectivity to a system.
It's an option and one I will look into.
It worked fine under 1.5 and so far its the only thing that us causing me an issue.
T mobile tech support were able to reproduce, and in their testing they found a factory reset fixed the problem - I have confirmed (as has another user over on the tmobile forums).
Gave me an excuse to clear up the rubbish that had accumulated on phone.
All working now.
its working fine for me :/

and me, just done the Orange OTA 2.1 update and tethering works fine on the phone right after the update... if you need to factory reset to get it working it must be something you have installed on the phone.
Or maybe tmobile did something different to orange. Or maybe the radio roms are different.
Was quite a few tmob users and tmob support so if it was a rogue app then it was a fairly common one
Either way. It's working now.
Wish all problems were resolved as.simply.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I certainly think it has something to do with the installed apps on the phone after the update else why would a factory reset solve it, its not the Rom that is the problem... I take it you had heavily customized your phone.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Actually no- 5 apps, lastfm, xda, facebook, ambling audio book reader and handcent sms - restore took less than 5 minutes after factory reset, all contacts and calendar info on google.
Given that the functions like handing out dhcp address worked, it was fundamentally was "all there" I can easily imagine a startup routine that says something like
if file exists "some config file" then leave it alone
else make a new one
When you reboot, config file exists so leave it alone in, when factory reset - file doesn't exist, make a new one.
Perhaps the key thing is I was a heavy user of tethering before the update, perhaps when I did the upgrade I forgot to "stop" tethering and just pulled the cable - can't remember, so maybe I had a config file/param that the newer kernel, ip stack etc. didn't expect to see and didn't handle well.
The key thing about factory reset isn't the rom I agree, the code is the code - but it's the wiping of the configuration and volatile data - something got broken for me, and the guys at tmobile, and about 5 other users who reported the same problem - so whilst it obviously works for some without a reset, equally it didn't for others - for at least 3 of us (2 end users and 1 at tmobile) a reset was needed.
If it was a one off, absolutely agree, it must have just been me/my setup - but it wasn't an isolated case.
Personally, I was surprised when the 2.1 update didn't wipe the phone, I was expecting it - so in my case no real problem once suggested to me - others might have more dependency on the installed apps and config but for me this was an easy fix.
Either way, it's back working now - so if it works without a reset - great, and if it doesn't work, a reset looks to fix it - so great as well.

[Q] GPS stopped working after upgrade to Gingerbread

I went into a T-Mobile store and had an associate upgrade my handset to Gingerbread. Everything works fine except for when I go into Navigation to use GPS. I type in the location where I want to go, but it says, "Searching for GPS..." and then it never finds it. Of course, I'm trying to use it in locations where GPS previously worked fine.
Here's what I've done to try to fix the issue:
1. restart the phone
2. download an app called "GPS Status & Toolbox" It has a tool that allows you to reset your gps data or something like that.
3. factory reset
Does anyone know of something else that I can try?
http://teamroyal.net/gps.html
this is may/may not help.
I would recommend you root and d/l a AOSP rom with new panache radio or similar, but that's another story....
Thanks for the reply, h22aboi. Unfortunately those procedures didn't work either.
I called T-Mobile tonight, and they couldn't give me an answer on how to fix the GPS. But the lady mentioned that others were having the same problem, and they were working on a solution. I asked her how many people were having this problem, and she said ten. That's not exactly a huge number, so I don't want to hold my breath for a fix.
I'm thinking about rooting my phone, but I'm under the impression that I would need to first downgrade to Froyo. I found a guide on how to do that, but it looks really complicated, especially for a total noob like me. I don't even know what an ADB is.
