A couple of pains...

Right, so I've had my Wizard for a couple of months so far and it's struck me as a wonderful piece of miniaturisation. But I've found the OS lets it down - WM2005 tries to do too much and thus fails as the basic features, stability and user-friendliness. Anyway, bashing Microsoft isn't why I'm here today
I've managed to sort out most of the pressing concerns with the device, especially the sluggishness (fixed with a firmware upgrade from O2, my carrier). But there are a few things that bother me still:
1) When adding a new ToDo task or contact, the first field loses focus after a random amount of time, halfway through typing. This is incredibly annoying as I have to, after typing in thef first few letters, refocus the cursor at the end of the text to continue typing. This only effects the default (first) field selection, ie, the contact or task name.
2) When plugged into my PC, it appears as a network device. Fair enough, I can see the logic behind a phone being classed as a network device. What's annoying as that whenevr I plug it in, a network connection is set up which become the primary - overruling my LAN connection to the internet. Now I never use my phone as a modem, but I still have to unplug or disable it if I want to access the web or do other PC-based networking activites.
3) Hotmail. I can't believe this was built into the email client. How can it be removed? And can the 'Outlook' email be made to download email directly? It's completely pointless to have to maintain two email profiles for the same account - one for email received via Outlook and the other for directly downloaded messages. I need to reply to SMSs for them to be marked as 'read'. Anyone know if this is usual behaviour? Better yet, are there any decent alternatives to the messaging suite? I really loved the threaded SMS views of the Treo and its email client, but haven't found any PocketPC equivalents.
4) I'm really hating Outlook on my desktop - the only reason I installed it was to allow (half) my emails to by sync'ed. I've been yearning to get back to Thunderbird but have been held back by my phone. However, recently, I heard of something called FinchSync, which claims to allow Thunderbird-WM2005 email/contact sync'ing. Anyone used it?
5) Skype. I like Skype and would love to see it on my phone. I knew when I brought it that it probably wouldn't be able to run it and my tests (even if OC'ed to 252MHz) show that it doesn't really work (gets tantilizingly close). Yet I hear people claiming it works perfectly on their devices - I was wondering if there's a clever trick to this.

it has to be related to your PC networking settings[routing i think]. right now my wiz is connected and I use net ;]

I think this is related to way of managing mails. Outlook is build in acount fo handling sync'ed mail's and standard pop3 is for handlig popped mails. Actually I am not syncing my e'mails (my inobx on pc is larger thn my sd card ) but imo there is another way of managaging (ie. on my pop3 account emails are deleted from device when read and older than settins)

on my OC [240] wiz skype is working flawleseverything I've done is oc my wiz. skype was included on rom I am using.

Thanks for the reply - I'm thinking you're right about the networking issues being on the desktop.
You got your Skype on a ROM - I downloaded mine from the Skype website. I opted for the 'low power' version, I assume that's the one everyone else uses?

BlackBerry vs Xperia

Hi All,
I'm looking at upgrading my phone. Last night someone stole my BlackBerry 8120... I loved that phone! I was able to do all my work emails, surf facebook and browse the internet fairly easily.
I have read a lot of mixed reviews regarding the X1, however I do seem to like the look of them... A LOT.
Now, am I able to receive all my emails fairly easily and manage them the same as I would with a BlackBerry? Does it have Facebook applications and MSN messenger...
Any "beginners advice" would be great

^^windows live messenger is already preinstalled. u can get the facebook panel and windows live panel in norti's sticky thread.

i'm WM beginner from symbian, just owning x1 for third only what I can say is WM need your patience to getting started, lot's of tweaks and softwares to try and to learn. the uses requirement that you asked above can easily done on xperia. anyway, I feel good with my xperia now and it's games much better than symbian one,hehe... plus I reply this message using x1 now^^ so, join us, xda has cookies ))
p.s. what I watched on youtube was the blackberry storm bootup in few seconds! looks miracle....

unfortunately Windows Mobile is much slower than BlackBerry's interface.........
but at least it's the most versatile mobile platform in the world hehe.

ive never owned a blackberry, and the x1a is my first winmo phone too. i like the x1a, only downside is the screen is a little to small for me. i mean the screen resolution is awesome but i sure wish the screen could have been bigger. i mean 3.2" at least. it may not seem like a big difference in numbers between 3 and 3.2 but it is.
if your happy with blackberry's email, i would stick with it and maybe get the storm.

if u dont want touchscreen..then BB Bold is one of the best smartphones out there...very fast interface.

Thanks for that link.
So, this will convert my Winmo to BlackBerry Operating System?
I've read through the topic and I didn't see a mention of it working with o2 UK.. Are these things usually easy to install? Would I need to pay o2 for a BlackBerry tariff... or will unlimited internet tariff still be sufficient?
The problem is, I liked my 8120... but I don't want to ugrade to another 8120, that would be silly! I also like the Storm (but not available on o2). However, the Bold is slightly too big for what I'm looking for... (and has a smaller screen than X1).
However, if you're all saying you like X1's, i think I might give it a shot.

Which unfortunately for some unknown reason refuses to work on the X1.
There are other "push" solutions out there including the built in ActiveSync (which works with Hotmail), but if your work server has BES then you might be stuck.

No, our work server does not have BES. I just set it up as a normal email account and every 15 minutes it pushes my work emails through.
Surely if the X1 has Winmo I can just set up my email address as normal through the email client, and set it to send/receive every 10 minutes or something?

Just my two pennies worth having had Blackberrys, quite a few Symbians, the iPhone and now my fourth WinMo...
going to WinMo is about getting the flexibility to have almost anything you want, BUT also having the frustrations about bugs, some incompatibilities, flashing new firmwares all the time, etc.
So, if you're patient, willing to use the search button and share you experiences with others, in my view Windows Mobile is the best thing out there today.
Otherwise, get a blackberry or iphone. They rarely crash or go wrong, but are a bit limited.

You can do that, and if you have an Exchange server its possible to have true push with ActiveSync.

BadTasteUK; thanks for your input. I have had an o2 XDA before... and that was Winmo. I thought it worked pretty well.
To be honest, I'm not a huge techie, and probably won't be tweaking anything major on the phone. However, I do like the flexibility and option of being able to do so... Hopefully the phone won't have a memory leak my BB 8120 did... my text messages would often delete at least once day due to running out of memory on the phone.

i got a bb bold and a xperia, both are excellent devices i find the bb more stable and faster, the xperia is more configurable and there is loads of software for it ie youtube.
at the moment the bb suits my needs so im using that. it all comes down to what you wanna do with the device.

I suppose all I want to do is use the phone mainly for calls, texts, facebook and searching the internet if I need a phone number, or google maps if I'm slightly lost etc.
Other things that I will be doing from time-to-time. Checking email and occasionally replying to them.
Things that would be nice; Youtube.
Overall, I'm sure I will be more than happy with either the BlackBerry Bold OR the X1... However, the X1 is smaller and has a bigger screen... that will be better for me.
PLUS - It's something "different" to the BlackBerry I have been using over the past 12 months... will give me something to play with for endless hours.

bb internet browser is poor xperia beats it hands down... sounds like xperia is the answer mate

Anybody moved from Blackberry with BES?

just wondering if anybody has moved from a Blackberry in a BES environment to
the Android platform with google apps?
How are you finding it??

Hi,
I was formerly using a Blackberry with BES, and switched to the G1 back in October, with my email hosted by Google Apps for Domains.
In general, I'm pretty happy with the G1 as a Blackberry replacement, with a few caveats:
1. The actual emailing experience (i.e. sending and reading email) was definitely slicker with the Blackberry. That being said, I now think a little bit more about the emails I want to respond to on the G1 because it is that little bit less ergonomic, so that is not necessarily a bad thing!
2. I sometimes find it hard to find the particular message in a thread I want in the GMail app on the G1.
3. I miss the ability to add more than one email address - the GMail app only supports a single address and whilst I could use the "standard" email app, I really shouldn't have to.
Other than that, it's been fine and I've no intention of moving back to a BB because the G1 hits a lot more boxes - I did consider a BB Storm, but the lack of WiFi put me off.
Certainly, now that I keep my calendar and contacts on Google, I really see it is a good alternative platform *if* you are prepared to make the switch to Google Apps for Domains.

bb storm would definitely be FAR FAR LESS ergonomic than Dream for emailing due to the crap onscreen keyboard, crap touchscreen (it has a stupid clicker), and lack of physical keyboard. Dream also beats out all other bb's when it comes to long emails due to the larger keyboard and generally better keyboard layout and function. For quick emails, the bb/palmtreo format is more convenient since there's no need to flip the keyboard out, however, droidsans virtual keyboard or the soon-to-be android 1.5 with integrated virtual keyboard takes/will-take up *most* of what the Dream lacks regarding short emails, i.e. virtual keyboard for quick short emails, big physical keyboard for long emails.

I already moved my email to google apps for domains a few weeks ago (one less thing to worry about!) so I'm only really using BES for calendar sync now, although I do find notes and tasks useful but I don't think there is any google alternative at the moment?
How did you get along without using the Blackberry "Password Keeper" ? I pretty much have all my passwords, pins etc etc in that app, I think I will miss that!?
Having played with the google calendar application I find it very nice, I like the ability to embed a map in to a appointment by just putting the postcode in the "Where" field, I'm guessing that does not carry over to the G1 calendar?

Hi Mike,
Personally, I never used the BB Password Keeper, but I notice there are quite a few similar apps available for G1 for free on the Market.
I've just tested to see if the maps pull through to the G1 calendar, and your guess is correct - they don't!

I use OI Safe it works well and is free on the Market

Exchange Mail on the GSII

I've been using Android for some time now first with the HTC Desire and now with the HTC Desire Z. I'm sorely tempted by the GSII and have already pre-ordered on clove (can always cancel but need to be in queue).
For me the app that I use the most is Exchange Sync (E-Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Corporate directory lookup). Something stock Android sucks at (and even Cyanogen mod doesn't help on that score) but HTC have done quite well with the HTC mail client on top of Sense.
Never used a Samsung device before and have been hunting high and low on how well they do Exchange sync. The press release does mention full support etc however can anyone point me in the direction of some screen shots or feature lists. Lots of minor niggles in stock android like inability to view inline images, unable to lookup corporate contacts, unable to forward calender invites I'm hoping don't get carried over to the Samsung implementation.
Please don't suggest third party mail clients.. I've tried them all and just don't like how they always feel like they are layered on top rather than fully integrated and a lot of them are resource hogs as well.
Any feedback appreciated. TIA.

Email View Dissapontment. Any one else?

I had the Note for a month and I love it. I have and iPhone $S and an IPad2 hand the Note has replaced the two for me. I now keep as my iPhone as a backup phone only. After installing some apps to my Note I have had no problems with my iMac, iCloud, and google syncs. I feel like freedom is at sight from the big digital vampire of apple. The only thing left is to get my iTunes and photos taken care of. It is like breaking out of hostage captivity.
So far my only gripe is the email list views. The Note displays subject first line then the sender. I personally find it makes it difficult to manage my emails. It is would have been much better to see, on the list view, the sender of an email first. This makes it a lot easier to sort out junk mail and unimportant mail from the stuff sent by senders I care more about. Unfortunately the settings does not provide an option for it. I find this surprising.
I tried Kaiten Mail which solves this problem by providing many list view options but it seems to be slow app. It takes several seconds load list views.

I am using the Official Hotmail application from the Market called:
Microsoft+Seven,its very good and fast.

hi, if i click menu->more->viewmode and choose 'standard view', i be able to click menu-->'list by'. there you can select what ever you like to sort your mails after. at least my stock rom version XXLA4 behaves like that.
