Hallo,
I have a world-wide gsm version of the htc Hermes. The device is simlock-free and always has been. I put the official, albeit leaked, WM6 rom on it and it works great. But: last week I switched providers (for better data plans) and here is the result:
Data connection works just fine
SMS works just fine
But, I can hardly make calls and I don't receive any. The problem is not the network, because I switched phones (I put my SIM in a €26 SamSung phone which I use when I go camping) and I receive all of the calls. When someone calls me, they hear silence for about 30 seconds and then end up with my voicemail.
Any ideas as how to solve this? Both my old and new carrier are GSM. The only difference between them is that my old carrier (Belgium, Proximus) uses has a 3G/HSPDA network whereas my new carrier (Belgium, MObile Vikings; uses the network of BASE) has an EDGE network. Both operate on Dual Band.
EDIT: Would a radio upgrade do any good? If so, any suggestion for a radio version?
Thank you!
Come on, 80 views and no reply. Someone must have had an idea!
I did a radio upgrade (1.48-> 1.50) but that didn't solve the problem. Any other ideas?
I have TyTN and similar problem. Installed WM6, and worked fine for a 6 months. Few days ago problem (Strange?) started. I have GSM signal, I can make calls, I can receive calls from fixed lines and other GSM operators, but I can't receive calls from users of my domestic network?!? They get info Connection error? Please, HELP.
Also, when I ask request service for Call Barring I get info "Can't read specified service..."
Change the Sim
Long shot but have either of you thought to get a new sim from your current provider (port your number across if necessary) and see if that works?
WB
I've changed SIM card, it's still same problem! But, with a SIM card of other mobile operators I have no problem.

Sounds like a problem that's related to the network provider you are using. Have you chased down their technical dept for help? All else fails, move providers.
Once had a problem where I could not get mobile signals at home but could everywhere else. Turned out my service provider had issues with broadcasts to the cell near me.
They fixed it and gave me my charges back equal to the time the system had been out.
Good luck with it.

Hi everybody
I have recently started to use "push" email on my XDA Exec and so my data connection is active all the time. I have found that when I am in a 3G coverage area, I occasionally miss incoming voice calls (about one in five got missed in my testing today). The caller gets diverted immediately to the voicemail system. This does not occur if I don't have a data connection active, or if my data connection is a GPRS one.
I have contacted T-Mobile to ask about this and they tell me that it is not possible to receive a call when there is 3G data being transferred. I am not sure about this since I thought that one of the advantages of 3G over GPRS was that it allowed a data connection and voice connection simultaneously. Indeed even a GPRS connection gives priority to an incoming voice call so that the call can be received and the data connection gets suspended for the duration.
Does anyone know how to make the 3G data connection not prevent incoming voice calls.
My phone is an O2 XDA Exec with radio version 1.09 and with a T-Mobile Web'n'Walk SIM.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mark
I'm sorry I don't know the answer, but I can tell you I have the exact same issue (O2 Exec with T-Mobile Web 'n' Walk SIM). I got fed up with missing practically every call. ..instead I get voicemail a few minutes later. I'm stopped using push e-mail with a hosted Exchange account and I've reverted to checking via POP every 15 minutes or so, to see if that helps.
Thanks for the confirmation that it isn't just me, Izzard-UK.
I have done a bit more testing and discovered a few more things. It seems that I always receive the call if my phone hasn't received a call for a while, but once I have received a call, I can't receive a call for several minutes afterwards(I don't know how long but it is in the tens of minutes). And just to confirm, this is only if I have a UMTS data connection at the same time. Without the simultaneous data connection, all is well
Izzard-uk, can you confirm whether this "first call works - subsequent calls don't" behaviour is the same for you as well.
For me, the temporary fix is to send my phone to "GSM" instead of "auto" so that it uses a GPRS data connection instead of UMTS. Of course, data transfers are much slower but I can live with that!
I am going to try upgrading my radio ROM tonight (to 1.13) to see if that makes any difference.
Mark
I have tried upgrading to radio version 1.13 but it made no difference.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help.
Mark
Hi Guys,
I use TMC option of TomTom on my Universal with data connection always on (essentialy UMTS 3G) and email checking every 30min and I can receive calls without any limitation... I did it with 1.09 radio rom and actually 1.13 radio rom.
Everything is ok for me. But I noticed that on UMTS (not happening on GPRS only), signal indicator is set to 0 when I wake up the universal and get real signal strenght after few seconds. But I can receive call any time...
When i was with orange and had a 3g signal i could surf and talk, i also though this was the normal with 3g....
How ever on t- mobile it seems not my phone is set to check email every so often so im always getting missed calls where they dont get through when the mda is checking emails so ive had to lock it to 2g annoyingly enough
I have an O2 contract as well as T-Mobile and if I do a test with my O2 SIM in my Exec I don't see the missed calls problem at all. It seems to be only on T-Mobile that I have this problem.
Unfortunately, as I said in my original post, T-Mobile say that it isn't a problem because simultaneous voice and 3G data isn't supposed to be possible!
Argh!!!!
I suppose I will have to put up with it since their Web'N'Walk deal has no competition at the moment in the UK.
Mark
whos says its not actually possible out of interest?
I raised this as an issue with T-Mobile Customer Services. They asked me to make a list of when missed calls happened so that they could trace the calls and determine the reason. I did this and sent them the details - out of a total of 19 test calls over a 24 hour period, 5 had gone straight to voicemail even though I had a perfectly good signal at the time.
But the annoying thing is that, after going to all this trouble, they just sent me an email by return saying that it was not possible. I have quoted the email below.
Hi Mr Burgin,
I have just received feedback from our engineers who have tested out the problem you have described. The has advised me it is not possible to receive a call whilst transferring 3g data. I hope this sheds some light on the problem you were receiving.
Regards....
Not a very satifactory answer, in my opinion.
Mark
Hmm, no that's rubbish! Clearly other operators can manage it. You just know this is a checkbox in some management software somewhere:
"Allow telephony during UTMS transfer? Yes/No"
I've gone back to my HTC Wizard. Yeah, smaller screen and no 3G. ..but it feels a lot snapier than the Universal I've been using. And I can receive calls now, too!
Mark, I've had a thought. Do you (like me) have an old 5v T-Mobile SIM.
These SIM’s can be identified either by SIM serial number 893044 05 or 16 – up to and including 893044 50. SIMs with serial numbers 893044 52 and above will be ok- anything lower is likely to be a 5v.
There was an issue when I 1st got my MDA Pro. It had to be network unlocked by T-Mobile for it to work with my SIM. Is it possible that the ROM update as "re-awakend" this problem?
If there is anyone who owns a dopod 838 I need help. I need to know if GSMbeam works when you are using an ordinary gsm sim in your dopod. I don't care if the dopod is doing the sending or receiving, just that you are on a normal gsm network. I can't test myself because since I bough my 838, I transfered my number. Until I buy a new prepaid gsm sim I am stuck.
Give us a call.
SecureGSM see my pm. You must have encounted this problem. I have called three and tried to varify if they support umts csd but I am less than confident the modem support tech guy even knows what I am talking about. He said it is not supported but only after I sloooooowly explained what it is. The thing that bothers me is that my remaining gsm sim gives unreachable from the dopod in the same time as the 3g one. It should take a bit longer. I think the dopod is not realy doing anything when I use LINEMEDIAMODE_DATAMODEM. I have tried to use a plian LINEMEDIAMODE_INTERACTIVEVOICE call and that dose get through, I then do lineSetMediaMode(hCall,LINEMEDIAMODE_DATAMODEM) with both ends before using the call but it makes no difference as it is not supported.
Without LINEMEDIAMODE_DATAMODEM no negotiation takes place and even though on the sending side write attempts return success it dose not work.
CSD is not supported by carriers on 3G networks.
Please see for details:

Thanks for that cab, impressive. It is much better seeing the manual band options! The problem may well be with the 3g provider but I suspect that my regular gsm functionality is also not working on my dopod. In a few hours I will have another gsm sim and I will use the manual settings with that sim to test.
Using the cab from SecureGSM it is now possible to configure my dopod to work correctly with GSMbeam. I did vodafone to vodafone and it was smooth. I was also able to configure my 3g provider to put me into roaming mode using gsm bands but unfortunately no data call (csd) would go through. The bands tab did however disapear after resetting a few times and the cab needed to be reapplied.
next step- find how to use dual sim, setup call forwarding from my 3g number to my gsm number.
Thanks again SecureGSM!
I have two Dopod 810 running on Optus network. One running windows5, the other windows6 Dopod release. BOTH phones have the same problem of repeatedly disconnecting the phone call if the phone settings are
Network …… Auto
GSM/UMTS ..Auto
So to correct the problem Optus told me to change the the settings too
Network ……GSM
GSM/UMTS ..GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
This would stop the drop out, but I now don’t have 3g network, hence no MMS, video conferencing, web access is at dialup speed.
I had the Optus service department take both phones and they found they could not replicate the problems, installed the windows 6 pro upgrade on them and sent them back. Guess what, I still have the same connection problems. Put the phone settings back to the second settings above and have a phone back, but none of the 3g.
Any ideas why and what I can do? The only thing I can think of is to get Optus to replace the sim cards and see if that helps?
Ohh and this has been a problem since the phones were new.
I have the same problem too in indonesia Telkomsel network.
a incoming and outgoing call always drop or disconnected. and really difficult to setup a call. and very often my voice couldnt be heard.
anyone can help me?this is network failure or handset failure?
thx in advance
Hello all!
I've made some searches, but I could not find a resolution to my problem (and very few people seem to have this problem!).
Sometimes, in Android only, my phone will drop signal to zero. This most often happens when coming out of sleep, but it happens sometimes when I'm just holding it, too.
I'm thinking that it most often happens when it switches from HSDPA to EDGE or from EDGE to HSDPA or when it gets a particularly strong cell signal (rarely, though; I'm on T-Mobile USA).
I've read about PPP drops, but I don't think this is the same--in my case, the signal just goes to nothing. It's like I'm in a basement. No voice calls, no SMSes.
Once, I was able to get to the choose-a-network-screen; there, I chose T-Mobile, and it told me that the SIM was not the correct one for the network. Other times, I've gotten to that screen and T-Mobile could be chosen. Another time, it'll give me an "error when searching for networks."
Does anyone have any suggestions for this?
Thanks!
Edit: I thought I'd clarify; this happens across every Android build. I've tried 15 and 14 radios. The Europeans seem to have this too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796713 ... Is there a solution for this? Thanks!
Have you tried using secret setting to get onto phone options and change cdma preferred to gsm auto prl. I used to have this problem too. Dial *#*# 4636#*#* to get to those settings or download free app "secret phone setting" from market. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for your input! Unfortunately, I think this disables 3G in general as well... do you know of a workaround that still lets me keep 3G?
Thanks!
Edit: My apologies; other solutions that have mentioned GSM seem to think that it keeps it at 2G. Looks like this might work, even for 3G! I'll keep y'all updated. Thanks again!
How does this work for you?
I have ths same problem, and I can't get the 3G to work regardless of all the setting.
Also tried the secret setting.
Still limited service
Using tmobile usa, t-zones, rafdroid 3.0
Was okay and slightly on and off intermittently until yesterday, totally lost connection.
Please help
Hi,
Did anyone here able to resolve the problem? I have exactly the same problem. I am on T-Mobile US (HTC sensation 4G), my phone has stopped picking up any signal. It always shows "limited service/no signal". T-Mobile customer center is saying that there is no issue of signal strength in my area. In the phone, under wireless and netwoks setting, I am unable to check "mobile network" option too. I did factory reset too but thats also not working. I have also contacted T-Mobile and tried using the settings they provided for APNs but that did not work too?
I tried searching at various places but no one seems to have faced this issue. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Limited Service, Emergency Calls Only - No Signal
Our HTC HD2 is showing Limited Service, Emergency calls only.
We are running Android From NAND by aMAGLDR V1. 11 build DEC 31 2010 Cotulla 2010. The Limited Service, Emergency calls only began today
at 9am and the issue hasn't been resolved.
Is there any step by step suggestions?
Changed secret settings WCDMA to
GSM auto (PRL) with no resolution.
Would a hard reboot resolve this issue? How is a step by step hard reboot performed on the HTC HD2?
Thanks in advance.....
First step tho I'm sure you tried this already would be to reseat the sim card, followed by testing the sim in another phone, then another sim in the hd2.

When T-Mobile opens we will install new SIM.
The HTC HD2 is new so have no idea if the issue is
any of the above you listed. T-Mobile has the best service plans
but the worst customer service.
We require a true unlimited plan because 90% of our calls are
to landlines.
Thanks for your response.

Required sim card upgrade!
7 NOV 2011 UPDATE ON LIMITED SERVICE, EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY!
Visited a T-MOBILE store and the SIM card was 2G and they upgraded
the SIM card. It resolved the issue.
We thank everyone who contributed to this issue.
T-MOBILE representative stated the HTC HD2 could never achieve
4G. Attempted to upgrade us to a Galaxy 4GS II. We will never
pay retail for a phone.

Network Mode
I had this issue as well on my HTC Sensation. What worked for me was to set Network Mode to "GSM Only" (Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Network Mode).
It was weird, when I had 4 bars I could make/receive calls, but when reception was 2-3 bars it wouldn't. It has been less than 24 hrs so not completely sure the problem has gone away but worth a shot.
Bonne chance.
My solution
Hey Guys!
I had the same problem after upgrading my Moto Milestone 2 to 2.3.6 Vivo ROM. When I went to class at university I had "Emergency calls only" - not "limited service" or "no service". So I had receiption... Also I could select any other provider but not my own (T-Mobile Hungary). The same thing happened when I was at home, in the house. The strange thing was that I didn't have any problem at any other place. Also, when I locked my screen and didn't use the phone, I had bars and could receive calls&sms, but after waking up the phone, the bars went down to 0 and got the "Emergency calls only" message.
I Googled a bit and found an answer which was worth a try before asking for a new SIM card from my provider ('cause that was the only solution I found in every other forum).
So the things to do are:
dial *#*#4636#*#*
go to Phone information
Scroll down to "Set preferred network type"
Select "GSM auto (PRL)"
My default was "GSM only" and after setting to auto I had full bars.
One thing to note: I don't use 2G or 3G or 4G or any other G. I just use WiFi for browsing and other than that, GSM to receive calls and send SMS. If you need 3G I think you need to change to some other settings. But you should give it a try.
Cheers!
Emergency calls only; When Android pie sleeps
I notice several times since I loaded Android Pie on my Oneplus One that the system, to save battery, is shutting down apps, even system apps. One of these is the phone service causing my phone to read Emergency calls only. After picking it up, about 30 sec, it registers 3 bars as normal. I am concerned that I am missing calls and text messages because after it turns on I get text messages. So, what is going on here? Any Ideas?
Hi people,
I've searched the forum for an answer to my question, no joy so here goes on a new thread.
I recently bought myself a Chinese dual sim smart phone, named "Longhorn" (no sniggering!), but pretty sure it's better known as a STAR MTK6573. Great phone for the money, 1GB processor, all the bells and whistles. My problem is that I want to use two sim cards, one from a British network, one from a Norwegian network. Right now I'm in Norway and the Norwegian sim is working faultlessly, the British sim works when the phone is switched on first, but then after varying amounts of time the British sim drops out of service. If I turn the phone off, then restart the UK sim comes back into service but again goes off after some time, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.
I've looked through the sim related settings but can't find a solution, and even contacted the British network operator to see if they know any answers - they don't.
I'll be going to the UK shortly so it'll be interesting to see if the Norwegian sim starts cutting service when I'm there, in the time being does anyone have any ideas for a permanent solution?
Thanks to all for reading, and musing on the problem, in anticipation.

Hi, thanks for your answer. I haven't installed any sim "enhancing" software, and the phone is brand new. Swapping the sim slots doesn't seem to make a difference, even though only one is WDMA. I think the problem is to do with roaming from my UK sim, when the signal strength drops out the sim loses service to the roaming network, but doesn't reinstate the service when signal improves.
Update
OK, so a little progress was made! The phone only has the option to set one of the SIMs as 3g. The local SIM was set as the default and therefore had the 3g setting applied to it. If I force change the 3g to the roaming SIM the roaming SIM stays in service for longer, and is more stable but still loses service periodically (at least twice a day). Any further suggestions?

OK, so I now have a working dual sim phone using two networks from two different countries. My initial headaches were all caused by the overseas network SIM. Either faulty or incompatable but after a SIM swap from the network company it now works faultlessly.
