I have had a HTC phone since the Apache. I just switched jobs and they are a mixed shop of Mac Book Pro's and iPhones.
I won't get an iPhone and the AT&T service sucks in my state, cuts out all the time. (Co-workers have to leave offices and go to entry way to make/receive calls....) So I have a Sprint TP2 but I really need a way to tether it to my Mac.
Anyone have a solution? I would like to use the usb cable if I can. I know about the wifi router on the phone but need to save battery as much as possible.
Thanks in advance.
on my recent trip to Vegas i used wifi router and had it plugged in via USB. It'll charge... albeit painfully slow but it will. At times it would tell me that the power wasnt enough to charge so i turned down the backlight while charging to the bare minimum since wifi router kinda cut off on me when I pressed the power button. I'd still get that message but i would just unplug and plug it back in.
I dunno if OS X can do internet connection sharing via bluetooth, but if so, you could try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=560865
The easier and best option is HTC WIFI router.
I have it installed in my US Tmo TP2 and my macbook works perfect. Even my daughter connects her Ipod touch.

ooops. you're right.
Sorry, I can't help then, because I tried to connect with the USB cable several times and didn't work. I think you still can charge the phone via USB while using the wife router...

Hi,
I was searching the forum but haven't found any useful info about that.
Do you know any WM5 software which can change TyTN into wireless router ?
Something like WModem, but using 3G and WiFi in the same time.
My idea is to come back home, plug the charger into my phone , run WRouter and have wireless internet connection everywhere in the flat from my mobile connected to 3G web'n'walk T-Mobile network.
What do you think ?
Cheers,
BenOne
IMHO -
no way
no driver support for that
AFAIK no application
why? power consumtion on highest power setting is terrible, and battery is soon completelly depleted, there is also neecesary to left charger in phone...
if you need wifi router (w/ NAT, firewall, VPN...) you can buy inexpensive router for few bucks and it is more compatible, more stable, more usefull, more secure, far better manageable etc...
yeah right, but for what another device if I have one ?
I am charging my tytn everyday, you know how it eats battery...
just wanted to know, it could be quite useful. cheers
U can use bluetooth on the tytn as a router with a reg hack u can connect more then one computer, not the same range and speed but it is possible.
yeah but then everybode have to have bluetooth in their notebooks. we have 3 laptops in the flat and nobody has bluetooth in it. but what then ? everybody are connecting using dial-up, like thorugh normal usb cable, but instead of it, thorugh bluetooth ?
now we have like that - I am commin back home, connect tytn to my laptop, dial-up, and wireless in my laptop is ad-hoc configured, so everybody are connecting to my machine, and modem (tytn) is shared. if tytn has wireless, I thought, that I don't have to leave my laptop all the time turned on. It could be great to leave connected to charger and that's all. All the internet and local home network could be through that. If there was a linux distribution for this phone I am pretty sure this option would be one of main in netwokr configuration...
anyway thx. just wanted to know if there is any piece of soft for that...
benOne
have you seen this official htc link: http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/htctytn.html?lang=en
it seems it could be possible with vista... but I'm not sure...
EDIT: NO WAY... This is just wireless modem driver for vista... but not for wifi connection! Sorry!
Anyway, I'm very interested in... it could be very interesting for other connections as well... to get online a game consolle...like nintendo wii...
I really hope this dream will come true!
yeah, imagine you play in the bus online. cool!
battery problem. in this configuration I give our tytn 1 hour working on wifi and 3g used together in the same time...
anyway at home you have charger, in a car aswell, you can buy few batteries on ebay and problem resolved heh
sooo, who can start write this application ?
to which company or open source coders team should I send this idea ?
You could tether your Tytn to your laptop using either a usb cable or bluetooth, then setup an adhoc network through your laptops wifi connection. All you need to do then is do internet connection sharing between your bluetooth DUN connection and your wifi card and you should be in business to let your flat mates connect to your adhoc, which essentially turns your laptop into a router. Let me know if that helps or if you have any further questions.
I've done this myself with my mates and it works flawlessly.
Yea, I searched around a while on this way back but there is no solution that I could find.
Your best bet is to either just use PAN bluetooth, or tether just one computer over bluetooth and share your connection via wifi. It's super easy on a mac, not sure about windows.

ehehe...NO, MATE.... There's NO adsl connection where I live... So I can just use my tytn as a HSDPA modem and I use to share his connection on my PC, BUT I'm not able to share it throug wifi on my wii...
I really hope a coder could solve this... even if I'm not sure it's possible.

yeah, cheers pal, I've already written about that above. I have this kind of network at my home frome the begninnig of using tytn. What I want is to stop using my laprop as a router, my tytn has everything to be a router itself, it needs just a piece of software. This thread is only about piece of software.
is it possible?
on the Market, i could find 'Wireless Tether For Root' which requires netfilter in the kernel so it doesnt work on the X10 , and i could also find 'Barnacle Wifi Tether' which only tells me that it 'Could not find wireless interface!'
use Barnacle Wifi Tether go into settings and set lan interface to athwlan0
then it will work, you dont have to turn wifi on... just leave it off. Thats all....

i have root but its not working any ideas anyone?
yes you have to tape athwlan0 in LAN config barnacle
Dont press start.. go to settings n type athwlan0.. make sure ya wifi is off and ya 3g is on.. then give it an attempt! if it doesn't work first time try once more!!

Barnacle works like a charm for me

Yep, you need to enter the LAN value: "athwlan0", and after that should work fine. I find it doesn't really like to work when using "GSM only" APN setting, and can be a bit finnicky at first start sometimes, but otherwise it works well.
Does drain my battery pretty quickly though. Even plugged in via the X10 charger, the battery still drops, though my 3G connection isn't great at work so it may be that it's pushing to maintain the connection.

It worked great! Just too bad that I've spent up my 6b GB this month. So the internet connection is EDGE instead of HSDPA :/

If I dont remember wrong, it is an Atheros AR6000 used in X10 for wifi.
hey guys, that "athwlan0" thing did the trick
one quick question, if a computer connected via the ad hoc wifi is running a webserver, can i just type its lan ip address (which is assigned by barnacle's dhcp) into the phone's browser and access it that way?
i've set the LAN settings. i have root. and i can get the connection up and running on the phone. my laptop see's the connection and connects to it. but there is no internet access. doesn't allow me to surf.. any ideas.. does a DNS need to be set?
Another point to make is the X10i defaults the spelling of Athwlan0 with a capital A, remove the cap and put a small a like the others have spelt and all will work ok.
Only thing I'd like to add after using Barnacle all day at work every day since rooting:
Be aware it eats your battery for lunch... even if plugged in.
My battery life seems to vary pretty wildly (likely depending on how bad my signal is at my desk that day). But, at best, while plugged into the X10s 700mA charger, I'll get a full day's use (8hrs) and be sitting at 45-50% charge. On bad days (like today), I hit 30% charge by noon (3.5 hours into my day), and had to turn Barnacle off and let my phone recharge for an hour or so.
it'd be nice if i could get barnacle to f'ing work. i can connect to the connection it creates via my laptop just can't surf.. soooo frustrating.
if you are connected to Barnacle and plug into USB it will not let you surf even if it says your connected so if you need to charge your phone use the wall charger instead.

That's not correct, I'm surfing right now using barnacle. I plugged in the phone a few minutes ago without any issues. Connecting with USB works fine when using barnacle.
Title says it all folks. Who here is using an Epic, rooted and tethering just fine via USB? Only one catch....without using PDAnet or other third party apps. Just the phone.
Thanks in advance.
I have no idea how to do this for the life of me, but why not stick with wifi tether? You can lock the phone or put on access control so only you can access it...

Because these phones heat up quite a bit when running a 4g radio, plugged into a charger, and the wifi radio. I want to tether via usb so that I'm getting power while I tether AND don't have to turn on the wifi radio.
Cut down on heat, increase the life of your battery and phone.
Besides that, it's a feature of the phone that I paid for and I want to be able to use it. Lol.
Ues this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388 to root your phone and install clockwork mod

Then instell this moded wired thether http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803335&highlight=Usb+tether
If u need more help let me know and I can try to help
O BTW USB tether works just fine ;-)
Cool. Thanks for the tutorial here.
I've been trying to be nice about my data and pay for tethering through Sprint without rooting and doing wifi tether/usb but I'm finding that this Epic doesn't play nice with Mac and USB and there's a glitch which doesn't allow me to do 4g hotspot AND voice at the same time. Every time I get a voice call, the hotspot drops the 4g connection as if I was using 3g. ONce the call ends, the phone reconnects to 4g and continues on. I've brought both of these up to Sprint with no resolution as of yet.
is there any advantage using usb vs wifi? besides what you mentioned, but speed wise. is one faster than the other? or are they pretty much the same. i tether alot with wifi and i usually have my phone plugged into the wall charger whenever i do and notice it can get kinda hot sometimes. if there is no speed diff id prob go wired also

Speed is the same with 3g as for 4g I have no idea its not in my area :-(
Zulu have u tryed the wired tether app I linked to with a Mac? I'm going to have to test it on my friends macbook. I'm at my girls right now and the only pcs arond are both runing win7 32
I'm running SRF 1.2 w/Genocide 1.1. Earlier tonight, using qbking's excellent video, I used the Spring Hotspot hack. Everything worked perfectly and I can now wirelessly tether my Epic to my PowerBook G4. However, trying to do a wired tether is another story. Although my network preferences lists the Samsung SPH-D700, clicking "connect" doesn't seem to work. What happens is that it'll saying "connecting" for a few seconds, and then I'll get a pop-up reading: "Internet Connect A Modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." Is there a proper way to configure the network preferences for this modem so that I can wire tether my Mac laptop to my Epic?
just wondering if it would be possible to make this badboy work plugged into the transformer I'm too much of a noob to even try to make it work myself

that link has all the linux installers, as well as source it looks like
Your link is just a page talking about setting up devices in Linux.
However, your subjects mentions a MiFi - since that sets up a wireless hotspot, it will work without any need for the Linux drivers etc referenced on your link.
You should probably be able to use the dock to keep it charged too if necessary, though you'll still be connected to the device via WiFi.
Regards,
Dave
Think of it in the same vein as a wireless router, and you're good to go.
nah, it's got 4 hours battery life, and turns off the wifi when plugged in :-( super lame

Does it still turn the WiFi off when plugged into the TF dock? I'd have thought it would just see the TF as a "charger" and thus leave the WiFi on.
Regards,
Dave
nah, it senses something making a data connection, even though there are no drivers and shuts her down. no worries though, I just finished cutting the usb cable it came with and getting rid of the data wires, so now it charges while connected, and keeps the wifi alive. this will do for now, although having two wifi modules and a 3g module all running for data is not going to be happiness for my battery
I have a Huawei MiFi from 3 in the UK. When I originally bought it, it would turn off the wifi when plugged in to a laptop, but there was a subsequent firmware update that "fixed" this issue, so there may well be a firmware update for your Novatel device.
Moot point now though if you cut your cable!

Dave
I've been trying to figure this out for awhile now and seemed to be stumped. I have my HD2 setup to dual boot into WP7 and MIUI Android, on WP7 I can seem to connect to my WiFi router at home but it shows the one dot on the meter instead of all of them. On the Android side it will show my network but then says it's poor and won't ever connect. I've tried to flash different radio's on here and nothing makes a difference.
So is it now hardware related? Or am I missing something on what to try and do? I haven't loaded a NAND build of Android on but anytime I've tried to load straight WP7 it seems to be the same thing.
My router is broadcasting in G-Only, would that be the cause of this? I didn't think I need to drop down the router broadcasting
Just loaded a nand version of Android and still the same issue.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Does anything else get connected to the WiFi?
What is the security type on the WiFi router?
I think its probably your router,
try it around someone elses house maybe?
My laptop and my wife's laptop connect to the router as well as the Wii, 360. My old myTouch and my wife's myTouch connects as well
Just the HD2 doesn't. I think it might not like Linksys routers
Got it to work...had to open it up and make sure the wifi antenna cord was connected and now I have full strength
hehe. glad it worked out for you.
and for anyone else who might have same problem...the best way to check whether the cable is loose or not just put on ur BLUETOOTH (yes i said bluetooth) and see if u can connect that as well.
if you cant...then its definately the loose cable.
why? cos on most of the htc devices including my hd2 and diamond and htc touch, the wifi / bluetooth cable is the same cable.

Yep I tried to connect with BT and it wouldn't find anything...now the wifi signal is rock solid and makes me enjoy the device. Since I already listed it for sale I might actually keep it I dunno lol
