UPDATE
Now working but........
...You need to have ChangeScreen installed for this little app to work. I have included the cab at the end of the post.
I have updated the cab below.
The screen now turns off when the phone is face down and turns back on as you turn it over.
When the phone is face up normal operation is restored.

Previous Release Notes
I put together this little APP after a post by Maverick777.
Install to your device and when you place the phone facedown the backlight will turn off.
When you flip the phone over the backlight will turn back on.
Hopefully, a few people will find this useful.
Thanks for this

I have updated the cab. I suspect it doesn't work because I did not realise you need to have ChangeScreen installed to make my little app work. I am a ROM Flash Junkie and after flashing a new ROM I tried hAndyFlip and it did not work. I had not put ChangeScreen in my auto setup and once installed it worked.
hAndyFlip reads the registry keys to establish the rotation of the device and at present the keys that dynamically change are created by ChangeScreen.
To be honest ChangeScreen is one of the cab's I install after every flash. I would give it a try whether of not you find hAndyFlip useful.
Thank you for this program. But I have a problem.
When you flip the phone over the backlight will turn back on.

This doesn´t work. When I flip the phone, the display remains black.
The other way around (phone is face down) it´s o.k.
Is there something to set up? By the way, i didn´t find an icon of handyflip.

Have you installed ChangeScreen ?
I have it on my device and it works - in fact I now install it after each Flash.
The ICON is in \windows\startup
Would you prefer it in programs ? and maybe the option to toggle on/off ?
I deleted the shortcut in the autostart folder and made a shortcut by hand. I don't know why but now the program works as it should.

I think it's ok how it is because you can "deactivate" it when you push the power button to turn the display off by hand.
Thank you,
Max

Max,
Just realised that I made an error in the cab. The shortcut it creates is wrong ! That was the problem.
I'll recab it tonight and upate the first post.

Thank you, Andy!
Could it be that the application drains the battery? The battery has drained very fast although I haven´t used the phone (Touch HD) as much.
Has someone else noticed higher battery consumption?
Or maybe ChangeScreen is the culprit?

Max, I've a feeling it maybe changescreen.
I'll do a bit of testing and come back to you.
I observed that that the cpu-usage of handyflip is very high (about 17-20%). So I deactivated it and now the battery consumption is normal (although changescreen is enabled).

Dahoarty,
Thanks for this very useful application. It works fine on my HD.
Looking forward for ur next version
This looks like a really useful app. Noticed though that the startup link is still broken and also high CPU usage as per previous posts. One request, when I turn face up and screen comes back on it doesn't just switch the screen on but it also takes me back to the home screen. Can it be adjusted so when I turn face up the screen light comes on only and it will still be in the program I was using (say music player etc).
Cheers
Barney

waiting for update.
have there been any update? I really like the idea of the program, but it doesn workin on my tillt2
got it working.but
so I changed the path in the lnk file and got it working.. but it works a bit too well... it never allows the phone to go to sleep.. If I suspend the device and leave it perfectly still, it will stay suspended . if I move it at all, it wakes us.
I wonder if there is a way to only have the script fire if your phone is face down .. and then once it is face up, it doesnt run again till it is face down again..
I figure that is why the battery drains so much
thanks!
Nice little app - useful when you're listening to music. Thanks, I have been looking for something like this.

You mean to put Athe into sleep mode, cause this is what the button does?
Many ups have this feature, but it is usualy a feature of some bigger up. First to look for would be pBar, then wkTask, then SPB Plus and some more. There are also options to swith off the screen without putting the device into sleep mode. But I never heard of a file which would do only that. It would be a waste of space.
Thanks fore the reply. I'm trying to do this without putting another program on. I had wisbar lite which did this but most programs are memory hogs and slow the phone down some. What I'm looking for is the command the sleep button gives to the phone to make it sleep. Thanks again...TJ

Yes, I know what you mean, but you need a good task manager anyway, so it is better to have one with some other functions, but still light for the OS, then not to have one. Forget about HTC task manager. This is rubbish. Get yourself pBar or/and wkTask and then you see what I mean. Both of them have this function on board. pBar is very light for the system, so light that I use wkTask as well, cause I like them both.
OK thanks I will try them. I appreciate your help. I am going to flash a new Radio/ROM as soon as I can learn how to without bricking the phone...TJ
I just installed pBar and I like it, thank you again.
1 thing that bugs me about the X1 is that when I make a call or receive a call I press the display with my ear and I'm entering menues and possibly even changing settings without knowing it.
Is there a way to automatically lock the screen when making a call or receiving a call? (like it's done with the power button)
Any help is appreciated
It should be possible to steal the registry settings from a TyTn 2 device or Touch Pro for that setting. Anyone here know the specific registry settings?
As an alternative search the Kaiser forums, someone over there will have the details.
My x1 does this anyway
After being on a call for around seven seconds, the screen locks and only activates again by pressing power, hang up or answer call (Green/pickup)
No idea if this is intended...but its certainly a good idea.

I works on the X1, but sometimes the app fails to bring itself to the front. So it appears nothing happened when in fact the display is locked. This happens alot in landscape. To set things right again just go to portrait mode and tap the iLock icon twice (if it's already running it will shutdown itself, tap again and it starts).
EDIT!!
I found a fix for the landscape bug. Change display from direct draw to Raw Buffer.

Mine does the same, it turns off and I must press the power button to activate again..
I think that S2U2 was fun for a while but nothing more than that. What i wan't is something that uses the standard lock activated by the "No"-key and turns it on automatic. Dosen't some other WM phone have these issues?

As a non dev and just returning to WinMo after a long absence, please can you advise how I would get the hard keys on the X1 to work during a call and just disable the touchscreen?

for all s2u2 fanatics out there. run the version 1.22 its the most stable for X1 and disable backligt check and direct draw off, never hangs or anything at all.
there are better solutions for win mo phones then s2u2, otherwise buy an iphone...
Hi everyone! I tried a search, but wasn't exactly sure what to search for, so I'm just going to post and ask. Are there any apps out there that will make it so that, during a call, when you're phone is up against your head, the screen turns off, but, when you move the phone away from your heard, the screen comes back on (like the you-know-what-phone)? I find that I waste a lot of battery b/c the screen is on during my calls. I was looking at all the "lock" apps, but I wasn't able to discern if they actually do this or not. Please let me know. Thanks!!
Screen off?
If the screen is on during your calls, you've tweaked some settings to make it do that... or flashed a ROM which has been set that way on purpose, because the default setting for stock ROM's is to switch the screen off automatically during a call - obviously to stop you pressing unwanted keys with your ear, and to save battery (you can't see the screen anyway when it's against your ear). It would be great to have the screen come back on automatically admittedly, but it doesn't take much effort to press the action key (centre D-Pad)!
My XDA Ignito leaves the screen on during calls as well, bloody annoying.
It's the standard Uk 'O2' ROM, I haven't messed around with it.

It is worthwhile downloading and installing the latest version of Diamond Tweak. In the settings there is an option to stop the screen from going off when you make or receive a call.

How did you do that. That is so kewl.
I have a program like a stopwatch that I need to be able to see what time it has, but the screen goes black whenever you don't touch the phone after a while. The program itself doesn't have this option, but is there other programs that will allow you to customize which programs CAN do this?
bump.........
I think if change the back light settings you should be able to achieve what you are looking for!
Start/Settings/Sound & Display/Backlight there will you find the settings you need!

No, that would do it for all programs thereafter. I'm looking for something so it'll know specifically which programs to do it for.
I've wondered this as well but never came up with anything... Backlight settings do not have a 'Stay Continuously On' option.
I want to leave the screen on while playing Slacker radio with my HD2 connected to a desktop cradle but the screen always dims
Perhaps there is a registry tweak?? The search continues...
+1, gets annoying for bejewled. =)
i would love this fix
KeepAwake works great for this

I don't need it, and it's a pain in the a$$ because I often read mail and surf the web before I go to sleep, and laying down with the phone will sooner or later make the screen rotate. Sooner (like at once) with mail, later with websurfing (because I have set the rotation check to a long time on Opera). But can I get rid of that unwanted bull completely and totally? Cab, reg hack, burying a dead cat in a churchyard on a Thursday with full moon, any method will be appreciated!

Try changescreen and set it to display only in portrait mode.
There is an option in BSB Tweaks to disable rotation. I have it disabled too, however it still rotates in Opera. I'm still trying to figure out how to kill rotation for that program.

It seems like the only workaround to the auto-rotate in Opera [9.5/9.7] is by going into the registry:
Code:
HKLM\Software\Opera\GSensor\IdleTime = [enter a large number, like 5555555]
The large number you enter (IdleTime) is the time (in ms) it takes for the screen to change in orientation.
EDIT: Another way is changescreen. If you add opera9 as an exception and set it to display only in portrait mode, Opera will not auto-rotate. It worked after I added it to the exception list and soft-reset.
Thanks! That worked! I have been using that idle time trick before, but that meant that even at the highest setting it would rotate before I went to sleep... And the mail/SMS app I couldn't stop rotating with BSB tweaks. Now it rotates for half a second or so the moment I turn it before it's going back into the correct mode. I would of course like to avoid that as well, but it's a lot better.

You could go in the registry for changescreen's idle time -- the lower the setting, the less "accidents" I have with the exceptions rotating in different ways:
Code:
HKCU\Software\idevelopstuff\changescreen\Delay = 50 (my setting)
**my changescreen delay time matches my phone's Gsensor's polling time**:
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\GSensor\PollingInterval = 50
I hope that helps.
That's weird. I don't have that setting, only five other settings (ReOpenSip, PocketOffNoLight, ScreenOffNoLight, VibrateOnRotation and ScreenOffOnFaceDown). Should I add that setting?

I suppose.
I'm just wondering why you don't have it.
In the changescreen app this is what I have checked:
Code:
[B]General Tab:[/B]
-Enabled
-Run on Startup
-Portrait, Landscape (left), Landscape (right)
[B]Advanced Tab:[/B]
-Sensitivity: slider is all the way to the left.
Then I press Save. Then I have that "Delay" value in the registry.
We definitively have different versions of the program, because there is no such slider on my advanced tab. I have one called 2.5, dated the 13th of March 09. What's your version?
ive tried turning mine off, but its very difficult, havent found a solution, ended up bricking my phone once lol

Oh, that's why!
I'm running the latest (maybe the final) build -- 2.78. I attached it for your convenience.
Thanks, that helped! I thought the version at the top of the thread was the latest... Silly me. But if I put the delay time any shorter than the 250 ms that's the fastest on the slider it will stop reacting. I will try to experiment with changing the time on the polling interval for the sensor. It's 200 ms on my HD2.
Edit: Setting both sensor polling and Changescreen delay to 50 ms made the flash to landscape and back to portrait go much faster, but it didn't dissappear completely. Still, this is a lot better than having to exit Opera or the tmail program to get the screen the right way again. Thanks!
Why not try downloading and installing the HTC update for the Car Kit Mode.
Then run NaviPanel (in the Windows folder). In the options you can set it so that it stays in either landscape or portrait mode. Select the Home hardware button to continue reading e-mails or whatever.
Sounds interesting, but does that mean that it has to rotate first, and then I have to press the hardware button? If it does, the Changescreen works better because I won't have to press anything, only wait for a few tenths of a second before it pops back to the correct portrait setting.
you could try touch tools
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683951
there is a rotation manager within this set of tools, you can add and also remove programs from the rotation list.
I know opera is in the list as i use touch tools but i wont delete it as i use the rotation.
Hope this helps
Thanks! That was the perfect solution! I simply deleted everything that was in the list, and now it seems like nothing rotates!
