oops.. accidentely renamed HKLM/software.. is it possible to fix? - Touch HD General

Hiya..
I found a neat program today.. to record my phonecalls.. all was well.. i got it to work (yay) but not entirely satisfactory. there was a loud BING when i started recording.. but there is a thread about it here on the forum.. just edit some registry settings and yer good to go...
alas.. i went into the registry with pocket commander and it was then it happend.. when i was clicking on the folders in registry i accidentely renamed the folder Software in HKLM to sz.. aw well i thought.. no problem i'll just change it back..
the thing is.. it seem like my blackstone didn't take to kindly to not having the Software folder.. so it created a new one... with not quite so much information in it as there was in the newly named sz.. ok...
this meant i couldnt rename sz back to software... so.. i thought i could copy the content of the folder sz into the newly created Software.. and i did.. and it seemed to work.. until i did a soft restart..
it hangs with the "smart mobility" screen.. it displays the red numbers.. but it wont go any further...
so.. is it possible fix the os in some maintenence mode or is a factory reset my only way to go?
Yours. Masterkong
oh.. and ive searched the forum and read the wiki..

So, now you should know how to hardreset your device. It´s written in the wiki:
Switch off your device, hold both volume keys and shortly use the power switch.

sorry. but i actually asked if there is any other way than doing th factory reset.. i really dont waht to lose all my customatation..

in order to change your registry you must have a running os. In case that it doesn´t work you have to hardreset.

Thanx man.. that means i'll do the facory reset now and maybe go for a freshly cooked rom tonight.. cheers..

ozVGA killed my exec

Hi all,
First post and all that, so hi! I've been lurking for a few days, but thought i'd post this as a) I might be doing something wrong, and b) if i'm not, it might help someone..
Basically, I installed ozVGA last night, and it turned my exec into a nice-looking, albeit ineffective doorstop.
I may have done this completely wrong, let me know if i did, as i really would like a 640x480 res
This is what i did:
1. I had upgraded my exec to the latest ROM released by o2.
2. I downloaded ozVGA from http://oz.sciox.org/
3. I followed the instructions on the above URL.
a) "unzip this file VgaRes.zip and put its contents to the \windows directory"
b) After that you will need to unzip this file OzVGA053.zip and place OzVGA.exe file wherever you want on your PDA
4. I launched ozVGA
5. I pressed the ozVGA button, it rebooted, the o2 bubbles screen with the red writing stating the ROM versions etc. appeared, and the SELECT and EXIT buttons were visible at the bottom. These were in the 640x480 resolution! Yey!
6. But...it stayed on that screen for a long, long time. It would not progress from that screen no matter what I tried, or how long i waited.
7. in the end, i had to do a factory reset, then install the new o2 rom again.
So... did i do something wrong :S I hope i did - as i would really like to have my exec in 640x480!
Cheers for any help
You need the VGA res files that are on the xda-developers ftp. The ones on the OzVGA site don't work IIRC.
You didn't need to install the ROM again. A normal hard-reset would have been fine.
Thanks for replying rilot.
Are the files you mention at the start of this thread?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32217
If so, they dont actually seem to be on the FTP site.
Also, in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37448
"Soft resets result in it powering backon, but stopping at the boot screen, after displaying the ROM versions in red text. "
The poster also says: "I had just installed OzVGA, and was testing it when this occurred, but that is probably just a coincidence"
Do you think this could be related? Just wondering
Grab them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7513
I've never had any problem with running my Exec in VGA mode. I don't actually use OzVGA though. I hack the registry manually.
Those files bricked my m5000
I just downloaded the zip archive from your link, unzipped, copied the windows file folder contents to the windows folder on the spv m5000(orange switzerland), and the ozVGA.exe to the programs folder, then started the .exe.
Result: the well known imitation of a brick. The thing booted to the orange screen with the red version info, then stayed there with two buttons showing at the bottom of the screen. These buttons did show the small VGA font, but none of them caused anything to happen. Soft resets didn't help either.
A hard reset worked (without re-installing the ROM) and I'm now back to where I was before.
Has anyone with an orange device had any other(better) experiences with ozVGA?

Right, that's 2 deaths from ozvga... if this can be confirmed, is it worth adding a sticky on this forum or something?
Did you run the signing app (sdkcerts.cab) after coying the files?
If not, that's your problem.

ahh
it's not mentioned until the 3rd page http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...der=asc&highlight=sdkcerts+cab+ozvga&start=50
which is why i didnt see it
Right then - before i try it again, is there a way to back up *everything* on my universal? So i dont have to go through the misery of setting everything up again if it goes wrong?

Sunnysoft's Backup Manager works well for me. But don't rely on restore from a backup after a ROM upgrade, since you will be overwriting those newly upgraded files with possibly older versions. Another useful trick for those difficult to configure apps, is a registry export.
As for the OzVGA glitch. Yep, the culprit is not running the signing app (sdkcerts.cab) after coying the files. Forgot to do this once myself, just at the end of re-installing everything after a ROM upgrade , so had to start again.

Weird enough, but after the hard reset, I tried again last night, and this time it worked. Beautiful VGA bliss on my m5000. A million thanks to the authors.
Now I can hardly wait for the international (german) version of vj555's BigPhone.
So just to check (before I end up hard resetting from not following instructions!) In the VGA files I downloaded from this thread, it contains ozVGA.exe, some files that need copying to my windows directory and sdkcerts.cab.
What order do I do things? I would first copy the windows files and the ozVGA.exe, then run the sdkcers.cab I take it i then need to soft reset. Where do I put ozVGA.exe? Does it just perform a registry hack or does it need to be placed in the Startup folder so it runs every time I soft reset?
Any help would be great!
Cheers
Fin
1. Copy files
2. Run SDKCerts.cab
3. Run OzVGA
4. Soft reset
OzVGA performs registry hacks so doesn't need to be placed in start-up.
Thanks for your help. Will try it tonight!

Stuck at Step1. None of .dlls or gifs that already exist can be overwritten!
2. I am able to copy SDKCerts.cab in the WIndows folder and run it.
Tried a soft reset as well. But still can not do the step 1.
Please advise.
to all,
look at new Helmi3.5 rom
ozvga is integratted
very easy to use and if necessary to revert back to qvga
Those who stuck at the boot screen, suspect that it is not properly install.
Only way out is hard reset, you will lose everything if you do not have the habit of backup.
You need to copy the *.96.* files into Windows directory. Think Windows hang when seaching for this files.

OzVGA v0.53
Noting the cumbersome method of installing/uninstalling OzVGA - I just decided to make a CAB Installer from the resources listed in this thread.
Also, given the fact that http://oz.sciox.org seems to be offline or maybe defaced, the attached archive might become even more relevant.
The attachment, OzVGA v0.53.zip, contains 2 CAB files:
1. OzVGA + DLLs
2. SdkCerts for DLLs
It's advisable to run the CABs in the order above.

2nd splash disappeared, not a welcomehead.96.png problem!!

My second splash screen (Windows Mobile) has disappeared. ATM only a white screen and fortunately I can boot.
I copied welcomehead.96.png to my PC to see if I can edit it (YES) and back to Wizard \windows folder and still same white one...
Any suggestions (I do'not want to flash or something like that because it takes a lot of time to shapen up the programs installed)
BTW, I have AKU 2.3 Mr. Clean 2.24 ROM. I can't edit extended_rom because of Wizard Extended_Rom 2.xx restrictions (no solution yet, at least I couln't find anywhere, Just Buzz was working on it)
:?:
I had this happen to me too, if you are using your own one, just replace the files again. But if you are not sorry you will have to find someone with that file. I copied it in 2 times and it works ok now!
Find what? an original "welcomehead.96.png file" ?
ya, cus i have changed my, but i did not like it so i did not keep a copy of the one it came with!
(cus the 1st file i put there did not a thing but then the 2nd one said to replace the file and i said yes!)
...It isn't dissapeared. Just delete the new one and voilà, there it is: the original.
I myself got a white screen after I installed pocketRSS reader...
Exactly the same program "pRSSreader". After installing it just a white screen. Will give a try to delete.
I have replaced it many times but nothing changed. Deleting might be a solution as yours
I'll post if I manage
Thanx

NOPE, didn't worked for me. I deleted ones, there u go, the original ROM file. but nothing changes.
...only when you uninstall pRSS the whitescreen disappears. It doesn't matter whatever you do.
But IF you have no pRSS anymore then you can regain the original welcomehead.96.png, because it's not gone but hide away...
Easily changed 1st splash with rom update (seems harder) but I'll give up the 2nd one because I like to use pRSSreader. Maybe ask the developer for a bug.
Thanx anyway
I tried deleting the welcomehead file but Resco says it can't be deleted as its in ROM.
I have the same problem, installed pRSSReader, it made my screen disappear. So I uninstalled it but the problem is still there.
Any fixes?
I would try the ones above but I can't seem to delete the png file.
Thanks..
copy welcomehead.96.png from Windows folder to anywhere(can be your PC) and copy it back to Windows folder.
think it will work
I tried that. It doesn't seem to work
I renamed the welcomehead.96.png file and then I deleted the renamed one. It created a new png file which, when I open, I can see is the Windows Mobile screen.
But it doesn't show on startup.
I also tried copying it to my storage card and then copying it back to Windows.
Doesn't work
Any other suggestions, please?
if you navigate to
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin
Change the value of Enabled to 1
Soft Reset
do you get your logo now ....
I know changing the value to 0 should give the the default windows mobile screen
It was already set to 1 so I took a chance and changed it to 0.
Well...its still the same.
This is unbelievable. I also had a go with Total Commander and some of the instructions around this forum. Nothing.
I can't believe the developer of pRSSReader can screw up so bad...I am going to make sure I tell everyone I know to steer clear.
Thanks for your help, though...
try to create another welcomehead.96.png with properties 240x320 24bit (important) with your PC copy it over PPC windows folder. it should work.
i have done like this way and i change whatever i want but pRSS reader get things conplicated if u want your welcome screen do not use that program as well.
Should the image be 320x320 or 240x320? I know the resolution of the device is 240x320 but many people who have posted here on how to change the boot images say it should be 320x320.
I will do the above and let you know how it goes.
I can easily change my 2nd splash before pRSSreader and now and will after (uninstalled that RSS program)
I posted this thread becuse I wanted to learn if that program created the bug or not and if it's possible to overcome that problem without uninstalling. Asked the buddy who wrote pRSSreader and absolutely he was not aware of the issue. maybe will solve it eith the next release who knows ??
all my images are 240x320 24bit .png and they work perfect.
let me know how it goes as u told
Well, I edited the original 320x320 image to 240x320 and then copied it to my Windows folder. It still doesn't work! It's so strange
I can't imagine how its not working because it seems to be for everyone else.
I can confirm that the problem took place after I installed pRSSReader as I didn't install any other program before that for at least 3 days. It's a very nice program (and free, which makes it nicer) but not worth the trouble if it messes up my system.
Well, I guess I'll learn to live with it...till I decide to do a hard reset and install all my stuff again (which is just scary as I have a lot of stuff and it'll take up tons of time).

keyboard SIP stays open

hello everyone..
before i start i just have to say i was amazed at the quality and quantity of information found in these forums. you have done a great job! i mean it!
so having said that.. let's get to the real point cause i'm about to throw this thing to the wall
to start with, i have a Qtek s100 flashed with the NL 1.13 ROM.
it's a great ROM and i don't think the problem i'm going to describe is related to that, but just in case.
everything worked fine till today, when i tried to "skin" the standard keyboard with a mui file found here... i was stupid enough not to pay enough attention if that mui was for wm5 or 6 (i have wm2003se)
anyway i copied it in the Windows folder and did a soft-reset..
at first when i clicked the sip-button nothin happened so i thought "well that mui isn't written for _my_ .dll"
i renamed it.. did a soft-reset, deleted it.. and that was is.. from that point something really bad happened..
when i press the sip-button nothing opens.. (except transcriber) and when the transcriber opens and i switch to the keyboard no matter what it stays there not being able to close it.. like the function or sth behind the button is messed up
i did a full backup, hard reset.. with the ROM clean installed everything was ok
but when i restored the backup the same prob was there..
any ideas how can i fix it? could it be a faulty Registry issue that can be fixed without having to reinstall everything from scratch?
thanks in advance!

How to get back the original TF3D Backgrounds

Hi guys
I used a modification to get backgrounds in all tabs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2869354&postcount=571
In the beginning everything seemed fine until I saw something strange in some undertabs like for exemple the tab, where you can see all the installed programs (this long list with the white background).
Now on my phone the background is white in this section, but not entirely. In the upper part of the screen there is like a bar in the background in which you can see the background witch is installed in all other tabs. Dont know how to explain.
Best would be to send you an image of it but how? How can I make a image of the phone?
Hope someone knows how to reset the background to default or to solve my problem. Perhaps someone could post here the original manila files (at least the 5c9aa261_manila and 4a087e41_manila ones).
edit: when I delete the file "4a087e41_manila" I get all tab backgrounds white. Perhaps its a good hint for the solution.
Thanks in advance.
Ascenca
There is always the hard reset option which definitely would bring it back.
Hehe, yes I know, but like you already figured out it is the last option for me
I first want to know if there is a quicker (peerhaps also harder) way to get it right.
Only for curiosity: How is the hard reset performed on the Touch HD?
Should have made a backup before installing anything new .if u dun like sumthing that cannot be simply removed from remove program list than a hard reset and restore always work..i learnt that the hard way though
Well in fact I did make a backup of the 5c9aa261_manila file. The problem is, that also when I replace the file with the original one the problem arises. And when I delete the 4a087e41_manila file (which is not part of the original system, only needed when using the modified 5c9aa261_manila file) then I get all white backgrounds, like mentioned above.
Couldnt someone post the original 5c9aa261_manila file here? (only people who didnt do changes of backgrounds til now). Would be great.

AFAIK that really doesn't matter, since it does not depend on any language pack and is the same for all language versions.
Oh and while I am at it I might as well help you out LOL
Here it is, 5c9aa261_manila, it's from the WWE rom... haven't changed a single _manila file yet, and the ROM is still stock... So I guess it is 100% identical to what you had on there before switching background mode.
Also ALWAYS keep a copy of ALL _manila files before using manila customizer...
Have fun!

I also had to restore the black background. Expecially in the music tab i could not read all the tracks and it was annoying. Still... it was nice to have a background in a certain tab. Is there possible, for example to have a background in "home" and the same (or another) in "weather"?
all i did was delete the 4a087e41_manila file and the modified 5c9aa261_manila file, and then the ROM version of 5c9aa261_manila reappeared. I then soft reset my HD and i had the original background file again.

Shot in the dark, but try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6508642&postcount=133
no.....
what you can do is use a file explorer...
best one i can think of is resco explorer
and go to \windows\ delete all the files that are
similar to ie: 2342342_manila (the numbers will all be different)
also find and delete the manilafull.xml file
then reset your device. when it comes back on your sense should start.
note: that any special mods like cookies home tab.. facebook tab special lock screens
etc will all be gone. this will in essense revert your sense back to default.
it will however, be working..
pfft... (post above gps fix) pffft.
-cope
same happened here.. to avoid all the poo of changing settings and delting files, just hard reset ur mobile.. without the sense launched u can still go to start menu setting etc etc.. its the quickest way but u'll loose all ur apps
cioa
First of all, before doing a hard reset or deleting every single manila file on your device, just try deleting \Windows\ManilaFull (.xml) as restart the device.

YES.. try this first. I should have said that in my post.... but ^^ this is correct ^^
also i should mention... regarding deleting your manila files; you wont be able to delete them all because alot of them are stored in the ROM. The ones you CAN delete are replaced with their un-modified version from the ROM automatically. So technically your restoring your original manila files from rom as opposed to deleting your manila files; it doesnt need to sound like a scary procedure. Far less scary then sense not working at all.
