I am going to swap cellular carriers and want to buy a Touch Dual. I already have a CDMA Touch and know its features well, but what are the main differences betwenn the touch and the touch dual. I know the dual has a slide out keyboard and a smaller screen, but what else is different. What are your like and dislikes?
I suppose you can easily find out about most of the good/bad features simply by reading one of many reviews available via Google search. So, perhaps I'll try to point out some things that are often left out of reviews.
Touchflo - This is over-hyped. The default Touchcube is quite useless because of the unintuitive choice of shortcuts. Prepare to have to mess around with registry and image files to get the Touchcube the way you want it. Grab-to-scroll is great, but it's nothing exciting nowadays.
The new photo viewer - Also over-hyped. The gestures take time to get used to. Performance is slow if your photo collection gets large. Most importantly, it doesn't allow you to organize your photos in directories. I've since ditched this for Resco's Photo Viewer.
The HTC Home plug-in - Arguably the best Today screen plug-in available.
WM6 - Will offer you limitless customization options if you are willing to take risks with registry and ROM files.
The camera - Almost unusable. Blurry photos unless you steady your hand against a solid object. This is either caused by an extremely slow shutter speed or it's a driver issue. The consensus is that it's the latter. Fortunately, HTC will be releasing proper drivers soon.
Internet Explorer - The default browser is useless. There's a bug that makes viewing large pages painful. The more you scroll away from the top, the more lag you experience with scrolling. Fortunately, there a fix for that here in this forum. Also, you will need to add PIE+ if you want any functionality out of the browser.
HTC Audio Manager - This is quite nice to use personally. Don't understand why some prefer WMP. But I suppose this is a personal preference thing. The sound skips every few minutes. But it's not a big deal.
As a phone, the Touch Dual is a dream come true. There are so many ways to dial. You can use your quick contacts. You can scroll through the contacts list. Or you can simply begin typing your contact's name or number and it will search through your contact list in real-time. This is simply great. Writing SMS and emails are great either with the touch screen or the keypad. Absolutely flawless as a phone.

is it that hard to perform a search?
Stay away from the latest HTC phones until they've fixed that driver issue (www.htcclassaction.org).

That's your choice, I like the Dual and feel that is as fast as I need.

Agreed. It has it's flaws. But it is still a sweet device. After some tweaks, I'd it is a joy to use. And if HTC is going to release drivers as speculated, then it's just going to be that much better.

Its only an issue if you're a serious gamer though. And a serious gamer would be more likely to use a different device?
Unfortunately, it's not just with games and video. It's the entire GUI itself. You can't even scroll without getting agitated! Imagine running your PC in safe mode.. Or running your PC with the default VGA drivers.
For those who insist on getting a Niki. Go ahead. you're the one getting screwed anyways.
There are numerous video's out there showing things the HD can do but MY version certainly can NOT. And despite how cool these features are, surprisingly hardly Anybody talks about them, I find almost no information anywhere on this forum or on Google.
Check out this video, for example. A nice demonstration of LOTS of features that to my knowledge do not exist on the HD:
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-the-htc-touch-hd-windows-mobile-smartphone
- First of all, the thing that caught my eye the most, is THE LACK OF THE ZOOM TRANSITION EFFECT BETWEEN PAGES THAT WAS IN ALL THE PREVIEW VIDEO'S.
- Then, there's the the IN CALL RECORDER application. Where the heck is it?!
- And even more important (yes I like graphics), the OPERA TAB SWITCHING, with its Cover Flow-ish way of showing all the open tabs as separate windows in semi-3D... See the attached screenshots. Also note how the buttons in the browser (at the bottom) are aligned differently. Can I get this Opera version somewhere?
The list goes on.
Why are these things not in the HD, or are they in yours and just not in mine?? Is it some firmware update I don't know about?
Please, enlighten me.
why they have removed the tabbing feature is beyond me.
I wonder if these are features that can be enabled?
My girlfriend has the Nokia N96 and her version of Opera even supports this. No, it does not look as fancy with the reflections and all, but the same tab windowing is there.
Also they said this version would include Flash Lite 3.1 well I can't even watch a video on the YouTube site. It does show more than without plugin (the movie overviews) but no playback.
And the zoom effect... As stated in a different thread it may be a performance issue, I can imagine it can cause freezes and instability, just like with the Manila tab-to-tab scrolling where you would see one screen flip away and the other one in, like on the first Diamond firmware versions. They just removed that transition because it lagged a lot.
Too bad.. The zoom effect looked really nice, albeit a bit iPhonish...
The Opera tab navigation is a mystery to me though. It's completely unrelated to other software and so it would not cause instability, it's just a missing feature in Opera.
And where is my in call recorder?? Such a tool seems very handy in a lot of situations, such as when contacting help desks, customers etc.
hi guys,
i'm also very interested to enable or find the OPERA TAB SWITCHING like on symbian nokia or iphone, it is really great;
and another thing, i want to have more than 3 pages open at the same time in opera, and it is set to 3 maximum...do you know where to set more pages allowed.?
thanks
While I agree it sucks that some features were pulled, it happens. One feature I do like (a lot) that was left in was the zoom feature in Opera (not the tap on page thing).
Click on the magnifying glass (bottom left) when in full screen mode, zoom away.
There are two parallel projects to port HTC's Touchflo 3d to X1:
itje's Manilla:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442154
and
Daran Clarkes TF3DHDB2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428351
For people who have tried both please vote which has your preference at the current states of build.
Seeing as I'm 100% sure that people who vote have just tried -one- of the ports and comment on that one.
The poll isn't called "which one did you install" it's meant to be a review of both. As these builds get better and better we need a source for newbs as to how the ports differ.
So if you can post some differences that you found between the two ports.
PS: I have both an X1 and a Touch HD for comparison.
1. Manilla
Plus
-Works fast, quick to install.
Minus
-Needs around 10 individual .cabs to work.
-Album doesn't work out of the box
-Audio doesn't work out of the box
-The system highlights have been changed into black / black. Whereas on teh original HD Touch HD the highlight (new sms indicator), clock highlights, comms highlights are neon green.
-The clockface is black instead of the original white.
-Camera and video icons don't work on the album screen.
-Some lockups now and again.
2. TF3DHDB2
Plus
-One main .cab
-4 add-ons
-All aspects of touchflo 3d work out of the box.
I.e. Camera and video icons work on album screen, system highlights are the correct colour, as is the clock.
-Really in comparing to my HD system speed is almost identical, i.e. I can't tell any difference. Launching youtube is slightly faster on the X1, browsers opening from the internet tab is slightly faster on the HD. Weather updates are 1:1, etc. This is all out of the box hard reset, i.e. no file or glyph tweaks yet.
Minus
-Relatively long time to install
The main difference between a real Touch HD and the above two builds is remains obviously the speed of loading the OS into a useable state after a cold start. The HD is pretty much quickly useable whereas on the X1 we have to wait for the TouchFlo3D to load.
For reference, my setup is (after hard reset):
-Touchflo3D HD Beta 2
-HTC Phone.cab
-HTC Volume.cab
-Touch IT Keyboard.cab
-FM Radio HD app
-Snailslug TouchResponse (to get the small vibration jolts when you touch the screen like on the real HD)
-All annoying windows mobile SMS balloons disabled (see thread), sms now works identical to HD.
I disabled all the panels apart from the one you can't turn off as I don't really use them. Why have a youtube or google panel if selecting these from the internet tab works 6x faster.
Lets hear people who have actually used both builds comment on their experiences.
I'm a noob, about to get an Xperia in a few days and would like to put the touchFLO interface on it. I am also confused as to which one of the two to go with.
I'm not so interested with how long or hard it is to install, I'm mainly interested in how complete and reliable it is, with speed/performance a second priority.
It appears from you're post that Manilla is the one to do for, Though I was under the impression from another post that I saw that the other version was better. I'm very confused and frustrated having to research pages of posts outlining individual bugs with each versions, trying to see which is more complete.
I would also rather TouchFLO as a panel, can this be done with both versions? or one in particular
I like the summary you have provided of both versions, I find very helpful. I am looking forward to anything other users have to say about both versions.

You mean probably TF3DHDB2 not Manilla.
Yes you can run as a panel, you need TF3DPanelInstaller.cab. First install the main TF3DB2.cab, then install panel. Basically TF3DB2.cab installs itself as your home panel. You need to follow the instructions for panelising it, I believe you need to uncheck the touchflo3d on the today panel items, before you install but I'm not sure, check with someone else. Also check if TF3DHDB2 can run as a panel or if it's just Manilla that works with the panelinstaller.cab, I'm unsure. Hell you could try it and tell us.
Don't get frustrated, I got my X1 just last week and figured all this stuff out on my own. Basically what helped me was running through the two threads above. TF3DB2.cab is the one to go for. It's almost as fast as my Touch HD, apart from album and audio, that remains faster on my HD. Although I do hear Daran is coming out with TF3DB3 next week? That should finish this whole port off.
But if you just want to start, hard reset your X1 and load the files I run (listed above), there you go, weeks of looking through threads resolved.
PS: All the apps I listed there is only one version from, usually listed on the front page (post 1) of both threads linked above.
Hi all,
you can panelize TF3DHDB2 works fine for me
i chose manilla simply because TF3DB2 kept freezing on me, i had to remove the battery to restart 2-3 times a day
i installed manilla 2 days ago and no freezes whatsoever.
i dont mind not having pics and music cause i use the media panel for those which is MUCH better.
id just like to see someone incorporate tf3d tabs that rotate or disable the roate option cause anything is better than hose ugly lines that appear when the screen is rotated
itje, daran's project seems not well supported. itje released a great rom with tf3d working out of the box and fix issues very quickly
I've tried both, and thought the HD one was faster.
My vote goes to TF3DHDB2 simply because A2DP works in it and this is essential for me.
Generally I'm impressed - the onscreen keyboard is really quite useable, and that's coming from someone who also owns a TP.
Anyway, one or two minor annoyances....
1) When replying to an SMS, you can no longer see how many characters you've typed in order to stay within the 160 character limit. But then my tarrif allows way more texts than I use so it's not a big deal.
2) In Cash Organizer, while editing a transaction, it's virtually impossible to change the year of the transaction's date. This may be only an issue with Cash Organizer, but it does look like Cash Organizer uses a standard calendar widget, so maybe other apps might also be affected. This one is infuriating, I must ask Inesoft about it.
3) No built-in rotation of Excel - I like looking at spreadsheets in landscape. I can live with it, but if there's a TD2 app that'll get it working, that'd be great.
4) The Tasks app seems to get covered in screen-garbage when you scroll down, but I use OPTasks anyway because of the Tasks app's inability to filter out tasks with a future start date, so not a big deal. Curious though!
5) No Facebook Integration with contacts, as seen in early product demos. This is quite disappointing but I'm sure a ROM update or installable CAB will pop up on HTC's support site in good time. Again, I can live without it.
I am very much liking the new Start menu though, it makes it really easy to swap between apps without having to go back to the home screen and use the task manager/programs tab - the old Start menu just didn't hold enough icons. Generally it's a lot slicker and menus are easier to use - you don't really need the stylus.
I've signed up to the My Phone Beta trial and that works nicely except it doesn't synchronize Notes yet.
I've fixed the no-landscape-manila issue with TF3D2 Tweak, but to be honest now I can do it, it seems a bit pointless! Never mind.
I had a big problem with Tomtom (don't we all?), it wouldn't work at all until I used the version posted on this site, and then Tomtom Home said it was an invalid version so it's not very happy. I've asked Tomtom for a new activation code for my maps so hopefully I can get them working soon. Obviously I don't know yet if the voice is clipping like it is will you guys.
Not much else to report.....I notice JetCet printing has vanished but it was pretty useless anyway, no driver for my Canon Pixma 610. No real issues with the WVGA screen not being compatible with anything either.
Opera seems to be a slightly newer version than the stock TP ROM, as is the Youtube app and I'm sure plenty of others too.
Really looking forward to my FREE WinMo 6.5 upgrade later in the year!
Cheers!

There is also no rotation avaliable in Word which is a big bummer. It is easier to type with the larger keyboard when you rotate the screen. There must be a fix for this???
Have you tried G-Config to add to the list of apps that rotate? Works well on the diamond.

Fortunately all the things you mention are software and ROM related. So they all can be (and will be?) solved in time.
If you would have problems with the device itself, that would be difficult to change...
Another quibble - often when texting your words go into a small box and you can't see all the text to be able to review it without fiddling about.
I've created first game based on my HG-Engine, here you are. It's simple touch game for test your finger speed
I recommend landscape position for play with both thumbs...
You have to click on the nearest red proton (+) before it reach the front.
Be carefull, speed gets higher and wrong tap decreases your score!
Note: It's only beta version, future development depends on public feedback!
Have a fun and post your highscore ;-)

Nice
2208, I look forward to more titles using HG-Engine. Good Job.
[bug]
.. As I was typing this, I left the game over screen open. After ~5 minutes the screen went into sleep mode and the device started a light vibrate that never stopped. I could not turn on the screen and no button presses helped. Had to restart device. [HTC Touch Pro].
Tried to repeat the bug: It didn't vibrate this time but the screen becomes completely black and I'm unable to do anything.
Atleast a screenshot ? Resolution info ?
Thanks for the game hope you keep developing it
Screenshots added... This game is mainly for WVGA, but may works also on VGA devices.
I'll look on that sleep mode bug, but it's not critical, game is playable... so now I have more prior ideas ;-) anyway, thx for report
Very good work, the game looks great and the feeling while you play is awesome
Wow! really nice! The HG-Engine is really cool.
Here are my suggestions:
Try to improve the smoothness of the reaction from the G-Sensor (You can look how the Diamond VR Hologram smoothness setting works).
Try to improve the sensitivity of tapping (I find myself tapping the cubes more than once most of the time).
Add levels of difficulty or game modes. Try color coding or moving blocks.
Looking forward to new games or new versions!
I like it, runs perfect on topaz TD2.
You may make a tetris or dr.Mario like games. The point, use cool game soundtracks (May 8-bit like NES, or good remixes ). Simple games with good soundtracks, always remembering easy i think.
Check out this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N6D4YeW9do
Really cool soundtrack i think, so i remember this game easily.
Version updated to 0.9 ;-) Check out new features at first post!
I'm working on G-Sensor smoothing algorithm, but it's not important thing for now. It's 3:50 AM here, so I'm gonna sleep, GN & HF!
Omnia
but i can utilies this application on my omnia?
nice game, just a couple of suggestions:
is it possible to replace the cube with slightly bigger cylinders- this might make it look slightly finger freindly
also removal of the graphics to simple shaded colours might make and improvement in speed
finally would it be too difficult to make the objects appear randomly, (this might mean more coding for you)
a few suggestions thats all
p.s it works quiet well on my diamond although a bit sluggish at times
nice work
TytnII
I have TyTn II, Is it compatible?

Sorry, it's not... Requires G-Sensor and WVGA or VGA display.
For others: graphics will be improved to final version... You don't have to tap proton itself, clickable is full area of display, so you can tap the corner ;-)
It is a pitty you can not run it on non HTC device, you get an error when invoiking GSensorSDK.HTCGSensor - do you consider the game to hndle that nicely and worki without GSensor?
Okay, I'll build "no g-sensor" version for uncompatibile g-sensors and devices without it ;-)
This game is additively fun! Great job!
Maybe a bit of difficulty setting would be better, it seems as thought it increasingly gets more difficult as time goes by. I like that it does this, but eventually it gets to a point that its simply moving faster than i can tap no matter how great i am at it
Id like a more constant difficulty i guess... hey, if this is all i have to complain about than it must be really good lol. Im looking forward to more HG-engine releases!
Thanks
Hey HTC-Fan,
great job. It works well on my HTC-D with Sun Y 6.1 B3.
Waiting for new levels or game

Hi there
Are you still developing this? I just came across it on pocketpcfreeware and I think it is pretty cool.
My suggestions:
Technical:
A soundtrack
Some SFX
Use the vibrate function when you make a wrong tap
Shake the screen a bit when you make a wrong tap
Conceptual:
Lose lives instead of points for tapping an electron?
Make the 'well' deeper to allow more scope for interaction with other objects
Add in some more 'enemies' for variety e.g. positrons which you can steer into electrons using the g-sensor or gestures for non-sensor devices?
