As the title suggests, my Elfins LED screen broke whilst on charge.
It was perfectly fine at about midnight. I was using it just fine.
Then i turn the screen off (power button) and place it (gently) on my shelf.
It did not fall off during the night, as it was exactly where i placed it when i woke, except the screen was slightly shattered down the right hand side and the screen colour was completely screwed up.
Im really rather angry about this.
Anyone else had any experience like this?
I have to wait for a while till i can afford a replacement screen.
Then ill have to wait 7-10 days waiting for it to be delivered
Then ill have to risk taking it apart >:C
Not happy :'(
Things do happen and I had a few customers who had no idea how their screens broke.
Screen replacement on Elf is a fairly straightforward procedure and screens are very reasonably priced on eBay. Make sure you unplug the digitizer and don't forget to plug it back in when done.
The best thing to do is to find the Service Manual, it will explain the dismantling procedure.
DON'T PANIC! Good luck
Dude, same problem.
but my screen didnt crack.
Mine problem was, the touchscreen didnt work.
If its under warrenty, its FREE!
Mine was about a week after the warrenty, so i managed to persue the HTC staff and they have replaced for me, free.
Well, Good Luck.
sadly ive had mine over a year now, and i got it second hand in the first place.
Ive already dismantled it, removed the screen & put it back together.
I havent even ordered the replacement screen yet
Order and test it out.
Remember to go for more popular companies, not ebay's.
My friend got 1 from ebay and his LCD looks very bad.
Im now very happy. I ordered a new screen on Ebay. Turned up today.
Just replaced it with no problems and now i have a working Elfin again :3
^___^
Yea, great stuff, nothing wrong with eBay! Oif course if you don't know what you are doing your screen will not look good or if you dont know what to order.
I also got a digitizer from eBay, $15.. replaced it perfect Genuine HTC Screen from Hong Kong.
Perfect!
Problem Solved!
I just thought I'd share the story of how my Nexus One became a 576 dollar(CA Tax) brick. I went hiking up in the Angeles Forest to go Bungee jumping on Saturday. It was a 5 mile hike, but not a too terribly hard one. I put my Nexus One in my bag and didn't think about it. When we got to the Bridge to Nowhere, the Bungee location, I took my Nexus One out of my bag to take some photos and video. I hit the power button and nothing happened. I knew my battery couldn't be dead. I took off my sunglasses and noticed spider cracks all over the screen originating from the bottom left of the screen.
It sucks, and I have no idea how it happened. I never took my bag off my back, I never hit anything. It is very depressing. I'm trying to email the google store support to see if i can get it refurbished or something so i don't have to buy a new one for full price. The screen displays nothing, but still responds to touch. I can feel when i hit the area that unlocked it the vibrating feedback. I doubt there are any AMOLED screens out there, or a way to easily replace it myself. Let's hope google can fix it somehow for a price less than buying a new one. If not, well then I'm boned.
Wow, sorry dude. I hope Google can help you out on this matter. Maybe you did bump it somewhere without knowing?
Are you sure it wasn't pressure from contents of the pack itself?
senseless post, never mind me.
Bummer...let us know if you can get it replaced.
So I guess we can safely say this isn't the Gorilla glass as found on the Droid.
pics? and does the phone not even turn on? ive see dozes of iphone users with cracked screens still touching away at it uncontrollably lol
yeah cracked capacitive touch screens usually continue to work fine and the screen under them should not be effected unless it took a pretty darn good hit
sucks to have happened to you so soon but i will say that personally having known how easy it is to crack these types of screens i have always kept my G1 in my jean pocket with the screen facing my leg at all times.
i've dropped my G1 about 5 or 6 times in the past 1+ year and the back of my phone is in much worse shape than the front but still no cracked screen i do however have a half way broken back cover

If you have it on T-Mobile, there's a way to get it replaced via asurion insurance for a $130 deductible.. Since it's still within the first 14 days of owning the device, you could do that.
read this sticky on the nexus one forums: http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/...surion-insurance-now-available-nexus-one.html
Just add insurance and you're saved. Tell them you have a cracked screen, and you're golden =) (never tell asurion that you had your phone stolen.. you'll need a police report)
If you're on AT&T though, you may be screwed. However if that's the case, you can call HTC and they can probably repair it for a fee.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into this! I'm on t-mobile, but i bought it unlocked. Lets hope it still works.
The phone still turns on, I see notification glows of the trackball. The buttons light up, I can even unlock the phone by sliding where i know the button is.. but the screen doesn't come on at all. it looks like it cracked at the bottom right and spider'd up most of the screen.
It was in a padded compartment of my bag, and it only had a few bottles of water(in an entirely different section of the bag) and my hoodie in it. I can't understand how it happened.
well it sure as hell didnt punch itself in the screen
Crazy, Ive had a couple close calls with my G1 and saw one of my friends G1s drop right in front of me and shatter at the movies but hers still worked just cracked everywhere. That really sucks.

From what I've read there's been a lot of different stories of whether or not asurion will cover the phone, but from what I can tell they do- and it's also listed on their phoneclaim.com site (though I don't recommend using it.. it's usually easier to call, I work for tmobile and customers that come in have tons of complaints from that)
To add insurance to the phone you may have to go into a retail store from what I read and show them a reciept from google that it was bought, and they'll add it to your account, so hopefully you can do that, heh. I'll keep a lookout for any new info and post it here, so keep us updated on the status ^^
Sounds like the water bottles may have hit it at an angle, there could have been a bump or something that caused the plastic lid of the bottle to become compressed against the phone, thus resulting in a pressure crack (which explains the spidering) Even if it's in the padded section, keep in mind that if you put enough pressure on a screen it'll crack, as everything has it's breaking point. For your next one nexus one (lol, 'nextus one') I'd probably recommend a hard-leather pouch for when you're going hiking so it doesn't happen again, and the soft-case for your pocket for less bulk
Once boxwave comes out with their anti-glare screen protectors, I'd suggest one of those as well to prevent the little nicks and such ^_^
Good luck!

seems like it might be a downside of an OLED screen. I've seen several cracked G1's work fine, it does surprise me that the N1 won't display anything at all.. maybe the video cable came unplugged somehow. Hmm.
I called T-mo and she said they show it as a phone that can make a claim if you already had insurance on your account, but that she wasn't able to add it to a new Nexus One since t-mobile does not support or sell it. I tried to talk her into it repeatedly and she said it just wouldn't let her. I said thanks and politely hung up. I'm gonna try calling back again to get someone else in a bit.
OMG! That really bites! Was it really hot out? I really feel for you I paid full price for mine too. Thats why I'm looking for a hard case. Hope it works out for you.
Same problem - cracked screen on Nexus One
OK I was not hiking or anything - just hanging out with my Nexus One in my pocket. Pulled it out and the screen looked funny. By the next morning, all black. It wasn't until I looked closer in bright light that I noticed several cracks in the internal screen, coming from the edges.
I think this is going to be a big problem for this phone. I've dropped my G1 about 20 times over the past 15 months and it's fine. I've even dunked it in a glass of water, dried it out, and it's fine. I did nothing to my Nexus One and the screen (inside! with no external damage whatsoever) is cracked and now does not work. This is lousy manufacturing.
I put a call into HTC and they are supposed to be sending me a fedex label to send them the phone, but I didn't tell them the screen is cracked, I just said the screen doesn't work. So I am expecting them to tell me I'll have to pay to replace the screen. The warranty number for HTC is 888-617-1113. If you call them and get the price for replacing the screen, please post it here so I and others know what to expect.
Also, there is a company in Dallas called dr cell phone (google it) which can repair screens the same day they receive your phone, you can just ship it to them. It costs somewhere between $75 and $175 and they said they will repair the Nexus One (they do many other HTC phones). However they told me they are waiting on parts from HTC so it could be 1-2 weeks before they get parts.
Hope this helps - I'm in the same boat. Good luck.
I compare the Nexus screen to Heros. It feels like Nexus has a plastic screen?

Sorry, but if you try to do the insurance thing listed here, your claim will be denied. Asurion checks to see when you last used the IMEI number to place a call. They will see that you have been unable to place any calls since a certain date and added insurance after that date. They will know your device was damaged before you added the insurance and deny the claim. Since your touch screen still works, perhaps try holding the search button to initiate a call through voice dialing. If you can make a call after adding the insurance, you should be good.

Same here. Always on the rear pocket, even when driving and its still in pristine shape (sold it yesterday, snif!). From your second assertion, looks like the G1's display is even stronger than the back (not as flexible, though).
I'm fearing the worst, but I thought I'd come and see if anyone had the same problem or a possible fix...
Basically a few times I have absent mindedly put my phone in my back pocket and then sat on it! The screen has not broken or cracked, however when I have removed it from my pocket there is a dark black mark that gradually grows smaller and then disappears. I thought nothing more of it until the phone was rebooting the next time, when I noticed on the brilliant white HTC loading screen a small white spot. As I mentioned before, I've accidentally done this a few times and now have a number of these white spots that are only noticeable when the screen is white.
Is anyone familiar with this issue? And more importantly is it fixable?
cheers
ClownShoes
if it's LCD screen, could be permanent... I dunno.
could be damaged lcd
lucky u havnt cracked it when sitting on it like what i did to my ipod. but on my old omnia i also have bright white spot on the screen
I had the same problem and I think is not because of you sat on it. I got it too but without miss treat the phone, so I went to HTC and they changed a new lcd for me.
i have the same marks on my bootscreen also thought it comes from pressure..
If it is the LCD that is damaged, does anyone know if it will be expensive to get replaced? I've just bought the Galaxy S and this is killing my chances of selling my HD2 for much

depends on how you define "expensive".
yea, LCD is one of the most expensive components of a phone, I'm afraid.
Pressure damage
Yo Peeps
Same happened to mine. Back pocket idiocy.
I fly quite often and when the plane reaches 30000 feet the mark disappears completely. I tried opening mine but I't not worth the risk since the screen still works perfectly (touch as well) and I live in South Africa where the HD2 is barely available (I bought mine in Germany). Also when you twist the screen the mark grows/shrinks.
If anyone finds some smart solution please post. Although the phone works perfectly it's rather sad to have such a beautiful screen stained.
Ive also got this problem. I've had it for the last 2 months. I can only notice it on white screens and its barely noticable then. I can't be bothered sending it off because its so mild. I keep my phone in my front pocket and im miffed as to how it happened though.

ive also got 2 white spots and its visible in white background.
Never dropped it or sat on it.
Its always taken care of and kept in leather case.
Like above poster, i cant be bothered sending it back as im fromi australia and bought it from Handtec UK.
i also have 3 white spots visible on white screens... its really anoying seing this white spots...
I had it on mine too! They replaced the LCD.I've waited 1 mounth.
Damaged
HTC state that my phone is damaged and I have to pay for repair
HTC want £178.68 to replace the MB and send it back to me.
I haven't paid yet as I spent £500 on the phone when it was launched.
When you pay that much you look after it.
It's in my jeans front pocket ( not tight ) most of the time, on a glass bedside table when home and if I take it into the bathroom I wrap it in a towel to ensure no moisture damage.
Look at my phone screen ( image was taken on a webcam not good quality )
The screen was like this from as early as I can remember but put up with it until now.
I have the same problem as U guys. those spots really annoy me. If you find out how to fix it it would be awesome. I woluld send it to htc but i bought mine on polish ebay and i found out that its blocked in uk (report as stolen and sell) i have got a buying proof but i dont know they will accept this. what you guys think?
Hello!
I have the same problems. A few white marks on the screen. I don't have warranty and i hope's to fix that problem by myself. If anyone have an answer please post it!!! Tnx guys, this is my first message on this forum.
Have the same.. It actually seems like the backlight led underneath the spot (on the bottom of the screen) is actually brighter than the rest..
I also started noticing a white spot on the middle of my screen as of a month now. Had the phone as of november last year, and really, this annoys me.
Nothing bad happened to my phone.
Does anyone know whether this is covered by warranty or not? I'd say once more white spots appear something must be wrong in the design/hardware of the phone and HTC should fix it. For free.
isnt it a dead pixel or something ?
like with computer/tv screens.
and a lcd screen with digitizer inc shipping costs something like 87 euro.
its pretty easy to replace by yourself if you use the step by step movie from HTC
ive done it last week and was working again in 20 minutes
(screen cracked btw)
Where do you buy the LCD screen with digitizer? Because now I have white spot marks + my touchscreen isn't even working. I think my digitizer is broken..
i have bought mine on ebay.com
most of them comming from hongkong , its not listed anymore in my ebay account because i bought it more then 60 days ago.
i know i was lazy to fit it earlyer haha
htc hd2 screen or htc hd2 lcd etc
you will find them, just watch for the shipping costs.
they have a custom to rip you off with it
goodluck
Someone is selling one for $300. It comes with everything including a case, extra battery, and charger. The only problem? There is a scuff on the top left corner, both on the chrome and on the black part of the LCD.
What do you guys say? Yay or nay?
My main device right now is a BB9700, solely for the UMA. I also have a HD2 and a new Vibrant I'm trying to get rid of (unless the later gets 2.2 ASAP).
I would say
1) make sure the power/lock button works reliably and feels solid
2) while charging, turn on gps navigation, and then start watching some flash videos in the browser in warm weather and make sure the thing doesn't reboot on its own from overheating.
3) when you boot it, does it show an icon of a padlock opened? if so this means the bootloader is unlocked, though not necessarily a bad thing, could spell trouble getting it serviced under warranty.

All electrical items should have at least one year warranty so there should be a few months left
Its a good price for a great phone, especially if youre a developer.
The metal scuff wont be visible if you use a case.
Go with what #2 said. The second point is an extreme stress test. I'm pretty sure my phone in its case would reboot if the room temperature is above 100F.
i would buy it. good price and the scuff shouldnt be a big deal unless u have ocd with scratches like me hehe.
but a case should come to your aid

Warranties don't transfer, do they?
get it. i paid 300 for a used nexus one with a few body scratches and the name "gabriel tran" engraved on the back. a $3 case from ebay and one cyanogenmod6 flash later, i'm a happy camper. don't regret a penny spent on this bad boy.
EDIT: one thing to check for also is screen burn. didn't think about it when i bought it, everything looked peachy. but later i noticed a pretty bad screen burn where the status bar always is at the top of the screen. doesn't bother me since it doesn't really affect anything, but keep your eyes peeled since it's pretty ubiquitous on amoled displays.

I think I might take it just for this alone since it gives me a peace of mind.
Where can the original owner find the receipt/proof of purchase?
probably in their gmail inbox, assuming they didn't delete it.
Hey guys, I have had this phone since August of 2010 and personally its really nostalgic, in all reality I prefer it over my Galaxy S, Especially for the Slideout keyboard and seems to have better ROM support :/ But around November 2011 the screen would spaz out not respond and just not turn on. Sometimes it would but so dark it was nearly impossible to see it. I'm not sure if the screen is dead I haven't used it since November when I got my Galaxy S. If the screen is dead, is there any type of repair service? or a way to buy a top half for the screen and replace it?
Look on Ebay, there are lots of these phones for cheap.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using xda premium
Sounds like a loose connection on the cable for the screen. I had the same problem with mine. I'm still using this phone now. Free fix if you can figure out how to take the phone apart & basically unplug & re-plug. Be super careful though! And of course it could be a different problem.
You can buy a new one very cheap in amazon or ebay i dont think it worth to repair
Not sure it's the right place to post this, I replaced the digitizer in my old MT3GS (cracked in my pocket), and ever since, Ive have the screen-spazzing issue as well - wasn't my first time replacing a screen, either. For me, the solution _every time_ has been hit the power button to lock the screen, hit it again to get back to what I was doing... Never had to totally power down to fix the spaz :\
If it'd interest you at all, I'd be willing to send you the phone, charger brick, (and the metal case if I can find the damn thing) for $50+ship - thats what I paid for the new digitizer... If you have better troubleshooting skills than I do, good on you, because I've torn this one down and put back together again at least 2 or 3 times since replacing the digitizer, and can't find a single loose connection - maybe you'll have better luck than me?
Thanks
L4T
I called a repair shop I found on craigslist and they mentioned it's more than likely the flex cable, not the lcd screen or glass digitizer. These phones' cables go through lots of wear due to the sliding mechanism. They gave me a 70 dollar estimate, so I just don't slide my phone out anymore to prevent the screen from spazzing out or blacking out for good (it happened to a friend of mine's MTS3g). I've also seen the cable for sale online on ebay or repairsuniverse but I'd rather wait for my full upgrade than invest in it AND risk not fixing it.
I really wanna use this phone again, the slide mechanism is so worn on it you can feel it its kinda tough to do its not springy like it was outta the box, also on ebay these phones still run close to 200 dollars, I would take it apart, as its out of warranty anyways, but I don't have the proper tools to do so, like the mini philips head and the tiny socket wrench. And I hear it is most likely the flex cable but as I said I can't access it.
