Apparantly I am still in the early stages of noobism, after a week and a half of rooting lol,, go figure.. anyways any help with these simple questions will be greatly appreciated.
I finally found a hero rom (evil d 2.0) that stays sharp and clear after screen timeout, and finally had some time to play with hero. Just a few quick questions now that I have new things on my phone.
1: What should I set my cpu speed to ? I put it on 528/245 and kept getting multiple force closes, went back to default, not as many fc's. Went back to 528/245, this time not as many fc's, but just as many as with default settings. Whats recommended ? most sigs I read i see 528/245.
2: One reason I believe Im experiencing lag and constant ( about 3-4 times an hour depending on use) htc/loading screens is that I have yet to mess with swap as I prefer to be sure and safe after feedback.. Whats recommended ?
3: I keep getting touchflo fc's, and not to sure how to fix that ? diff rom ? reflash ? rom w/o touchflo ? how crucial is touchflo to the hero experience ?
Lastly: Why the [email protected] does my phone place me in detroit when I live 1000 miles away in Washington Dc ? lol, I have gps on, when I do a locate or google maps, it places me exactly where I am, but all the htc widgets, (weather/time/combo) all say fracking detroit ! lol,, nothing against michigan, but I would prefer to know the weather where I live !!
also, how many widgets recommended to keep things speedy, if the above inquiries dont solve my problem. I currently have quite a few, (mobile buzz, gaming buzz, time/weather, people, meridian music 2x4 ( htc music players fc's waaaay to much), 4 settings widgets, launcher dock, fml and the handcent widget), but no shortcuts, just widgets.
is there a way to reduce # of screens ? I prefer 5.
thanks all
Yes, try 2xx. ;D
Seriously tho, play with swap and swappiness, that will have an actual effect.

will 2xx fix the sms, htc music, and touchflo issues ?
either way I'm flashing it, but Im biting my nails as 2.0 is THE ONLY hero rom I've tried that didnt result in fuzzys ! thanks again

So basically, my idea of a perfect ROM is one completely stripped of sense, with Launcher2 and livewallpapers. Ive been trying to keep up with the new 2.1 roms floating around, but if you take a peek at the dev section...its crowded to say the least.
My question is this. Is there a 2.1 rom that can run Launcher2 with no issuses? As in, no force closes, no reboots, no locking up etc, and still have a full function rom?
The OC roms look like they would be great for it with the added horsepower, but that would mean losing camera, and thats just not feasible for me. Is there a setup that i just dont know about? If so, please let me know! Thanks for the info.
Just wanted to add, that ive done plenty of searching into this and havent found any definitive answers. I see plenty of "Launcher2" works great with so and so, but its all subjective with others having issues. The problems i always have with it is running and app, then hitting Home to go back to launcher2 and it freezing up and having to restart, or having to move to another active app and then back to launcher2. Stuff like that. Ive also tried HelixLauncher, which just isnt the same. Im really looking for that 3d app drawer smooooth scrolling. The HelixLauncher 2 would be perfect, buttt it doesnt run correctly on my hero.(this might be something to look into, because there may be a rom its compatible with)
edit2: it seems like i can get it running really nice, but when i try to run certain apps (games mostly) it will freeze up trying to load the launcher. but normal, non-3d apps, go back to home fine.

i see a potential fix for this in the future, but from my attempts to get launcher 2 working, i mean i get it working and tried it with the most popular roms around here but it doesnt play nice with 3d at all, i think it might have something to do with the opengl kinda like the live wallpapers, launcher2 from my exp is really buggy with alot of 3d apps and games. i hope one day maybe around when froyo comes out by the time we have 2.5OS they should have a disable sense feature..............oh and to answer you question, ive tried it on fresh d still get the force closes, so i think fresh toast is based off fresh d so maybe it would be the same havent tried it on fresh toast yet.
Is something wrong with my phone? My Quadrant scores are NO where NEAR where they should be. I just got a whopping 872 I avg 900-1000. I know it might not matter, and that those scores can be manipulated. But a few have suggested this might actually indicate that my phone is messed up and if so – I want to get another one from Sprint.
Basics – I am rooted, custom rom (myn’s), stock htc10 kernel. I don’t know what other information is need to get help with this. I have tried running Q scores as soon as I do a wipe cache/dalvik thinking maybe it’s just slow after that stuff clogs it up. Same result. I have tried moving as much stuff off my sd card and now leave about 1.5 available ( I’ve slimmed my music down as much as I’m willing to do . I’ve tried running the Q score with the kernel set to performance, etc. I saw 1250-1350 one time, but I was using a kernel that was so unstable on my phone I had to ditch it pretty fast (multiple reboots, severe lag, etc).
I also wonder if there is something wrong with my phone because it does not seem to be able to handle anything other than the stock kernel very well. The phone completely spazzzes out with almost every kernel I have tried except for two. I am happy with the stock and have no complaints about battery life. I use the phone when I want and how I want and easily go 24hrs without having to charge. But the fact that only stock and 2 other kernels (king’11 and netarchys) are stable makes me wonder….
If anyone has any suggestions, opinion, thoughts, etc I would appreciate. I have searched and not seen this specific issue addressed.
If this helps, when I check my Running Services, this is what I see and this list varies very little.
Blik Calendar Widget
Y5 Battery Saver
More Icons Widget
AndLock
Handscent SMS
Antivirus
Calendar
Com.smithmicro.dm (have no idea what this is)
New and Weather (I have use the glass clock)
Google Service Framework (cloud to device; messaging)
HTC DM (no idea)
HTC IQAgent (no idea)
Voicemail
Ultra Keyboard
Def sounds sluggy.
My recommendation would unfortunately be to start from scratch. Backup only needed apps that you may not be able to download from the market and completely wipe, flash a stock OTA root ROM, completely wipe again, and flash whatever ROM you like after that.
I know it sounds like a huge PITA, but it should definitely help out.
I had a similar situation once, and this did the trick.
Ugh. Ok. I can try that. I did a full wipe/factory reset less than 2 weeks ago. I use Titanium so getting it all back up is not bad. I also sync to AppBrain so at least if I start with a clean slate I would know what Apps I did have.
Thanks for the help and suggestion.
to eliminate as many variables as possible, i'd do a nand backup, install your ROM of choice with no additional apps except the ones you use to benchmark and perform your tests. give it an hour or so after you flash to let the phone settle down (sync, etc.). you may have apps may be hogging resources or be running in the background (i.e. y5, antivirus) which will effect your tests. report back.
I will try that way first
Yes - antivirus and Y5 are always running in the background. Always.
ha - maybe I'll freeze most of the apps I listed as Running Services, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot and THEN see what I get. But I'm not ever going to realically run my phone without Y5, Handscent, UltraKeyboard, antivirus, etc. I could probably get rid of the More Icons widget now that I have Apps Organizer, but I really really like having one, 1/3 page widget with 8 icones that have ALL my apps organized.
Does your phone seem slow? That is what I would base the speed of my phone on not some q-score. What if you never ran the test would you be concerned.?.?
I would try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728 after your nand backup. That has the latest ota, kernel and you would not loose root.
I'll have time on Sunday to try some of the suggestions. Thanks again for the help, I really do appreciate it. I was with a friend this evening, his Evo is rooted and running Myn's rls3 just like mine. He scored around 1300.
And no - my phone doesn't seem slow to me at all. But I've also not used another to know how it might "feel" if there is a difference. I more curious than anything - I tend to research things to death just so I'll know. And I find it curious that my phone is both low on Q scores and can't handle many kernels without it spazzing out.
Hi Chaps,
I'm getting pretty fed up with crashes, performance and low space on my Orange Hero w/2.1, as well as still being miffed by Orange screwing up everything with their tinkering of 2.1, sooooo, I'm going to flash.
But, I need some help, 'cause I think I'm just getting too old for all this tinkering lark and I'm reading up on a lot of ROMS and just can't choose - I'm reading, but nothing is sinking in!
So, I like Sense, or at least I think I do. What I actually like is contacts / Facebook integration, 7 pages of home screen and the HTC weather clock and the weather animations when I unlock the phone. I like the threaded SMS.
I DON'T LIKE: Orange screwing up the speed dial widget, running out of space, the fact that the default camera apps photos have gone 'stripey' since 2.1, (other cam apps are fine). A lot of complete hangs and force closes, including lately, something.htc.bgp force closing several times a day.
I use GPS a lot (CoPilot, Cardio Trainer, Latitude, Maps) and listen to music. The std music player is average and slow, but has some good features (headphone out pause, album art, lock screen control).
So, a lot of requests there, but I think it boils down to me needing: performance, apps2SD and reliability, and compatibility with a wide range of apps. Root not essential, since I run all the apps I need to, but I guess it comes part and parcel with flashing a new ROM. I have already installed and rooted with universal Androot.
Any help for me?
Thanks,
Rich.
Hi there
If sense is a must, look at rcmix. 2.1 with sense.
If You would like to experiment a bit You can try some of the 2.2roms, ie floyo, villain 1.6 to name a few. But it is hard to find a good dialer, and Facebook integration is on much lower level than sense roms. They should be quicker, so depends on You hope this helps
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I'm not sure if Sense is a must actually... what does it give me? The 'skinned' buttons across the bottom of the screen i suppose (phone, apps and add), but there ae other apps that do this aren't there? (Launchers?). What else does sense actually do that I might miss if I don't have it?
Is Rcmix running android 2.1 as it's version number suggests? Is there nothing with 2.2 yet? I see Rcmix does appstoSD, and I think after the phone just running right, space is my next biggest issue, so I suppose it could keep me happy.
I extremely agree with you. You have just, like, took this out of my head and put it on the forums!
Except, for me, the most important thing is the facebook integration. Doesn't the actual Facebook app provide that outside of sense?
something.htc.bgp is the location service, I think. After that crashing, foursquare stops working properly. I can't live like this.
With the Facebook intergration, I just like the way my contacts show pics from Facebook, and I get the status updates from the contacts too.
I think I'm gonna try Cyanogen. It's the most popular, I don't think much can go wrong. Still, I'm massively scared, haha!
I agree RCMix along wit kimera2.1 are great choices wit flykernal 11c or bfs. Had both and rarely had issues. Biggest losses from not having sense is the weather clock and a decent dialer if u plan to try a 2.2 rom
This might seem biased, but if you try following the instructions from this thread you will end up with a very nice, speedy hero setup. It even has info in there of a very fast, usable dialler app, as well as an app to sync your facebook contact pics.
LauncherPro Plus has a Facebook stream widget built-in, and you can either use BeautifulWidgets or FancyWidget for the clock.
Should all be in the post! (Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it looks, and its a lot to read, but might be worth it for you).
Zeb
Well, I got Cyanogen Mod, and so far I'm very happy with it. Definitely will try out the widgets from above
Me too... went for Zebwen's suggestion above (Thanks!) and pretty happy with it. Took a bit of customisation to get it nice, but now I know how easy it is to flash, I'll probably try a few.
Am I right in thinking I can do as many Nandroid backups as I want, and later on, restore to any previous, full setup, including Apps and data?
Verified my own question on Nand backups.
I had a problem yesterday with the camera force closing... is this a known issue? Reboot seems to have cured it so far, but despite the rest of the ROM being fine, the camera does seem a bit 'iffy'. Exposure wouldn't adjust when using it with barcode scanner the other day.
Hi all!
I currently have elelinux 2.1 ROM, but I think that's not the problem, because with others rom is very slow too.
For example, when I'm writing a text message, on twitter or whatever, sometimes it has a delay of 1 second more or less, activating 3G/wifi is slow as **** too. Even turning screen on and navigating through desktops or apps is slow. When I call, it has a delay of 3 seconds before it appears on the screen. I can't even listen to music because the phone get stucks... I could give you more examples, but I think is enough to know that my hero works to slow.
But I don't know if this is normal or not, I don't know other people who own a Hero.
Thanks in advance
Yeah it's an outdated slow phone really. I would consider it normal.
Maybe you have some apps installed and running in background? Try to install fresh ROM or uninstall all applications and try then.
are you using an thirth party keyboard like better keyboard?
those are a bit laggy somethimes and that can cause your 1 or 2 seconds lag
and maybe try to flash a new kernel (like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730471) or start again from scratch

Hi!
Recently I've installed Thumb Keyboard, but the keyboard was laggy before that, so that's not the main problem I think...
I know it's an old phone, but this slowness, it's unbearable... and my contract doesn't end until october >_<
instal a task manager maybe?
or delete your phones cache (can be done by apps in the market)
otherwise.. i dont know whats the problem
i recomend a radio and kernel update (can be found here on the forums)
Yes, try a task killer to find out what processes use phone memory the most.
Kill them periodically, or just uninstall them if it's not necessary.
hi everyone
i think that's the steps of solving the problem try it
1- if your memory card is full try to delete anything you not use in it.
2- make a Swap partition and that's the link > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6907762&postcount=47
3- install fresh rom for my advise (VillainROM-v13)
4- install task killer that's help phone to be faster
now your phone is fast!! enjoy
You may wanna consider overclocking a bit. That's helps my phone quite a bit.
may be you've to reflash ROM
i usually flash ROM every 3 months
Solution without Sense:
go and get elelinux 2.8 ROM
OC your cpu (needs root and care not every phone can handle the highest values, ele has included oc app in his rom)
find the lowest working freq without the phone always restarting itself
find the highest freq without stability issues or overheat
after done this, check "set on boot"
switch all animations off
install just the apps you really need
remove all that unnessecary junk from your homescreen, a clock widget (example beautiful widgets lite, weather animations off, free from market) and some shortcuts are enough, if u want u can keep search widget
play around with cyano settings so you get optimum results
then your phone should not show too many lags, at least mine does not.
Solution with Sense:
Go and get a fresh rom,
example
elelinux repacked 2.1 rom,
VR 13 (also 2.1),
SalsaSense (2.3.3, not as fast as RUU 2.1 though, and use Las Venturas 0.4.7 kernel)
Same procedure as above: OC, for me i use 264-768.8MHz and ondemand gov
Remove all that unnessecary htc homescreen junk like music widget , peoples widget, weather.....
if u want you can keep htc clock widget, but do animations off
Phone should be FAST!
greets, S.O.D.
id recommend updating from 2.1 to the 2.8 version. the set the cpu to 176/652.
then install task manager. this should sort all your problems out
try overclocking the phone, i use floyo rom and it run so fast for me
was using villainrom 12 and recently shifted to villainrom 13. trust me it is the best rom i have ever had. i use taskiller with it and my phone simply flies. though battery remains an issue. i am using the stock keyboard and also the stock sms app. would suggest all to give it a try (those who haven't)
I too have had a slow hero and it is definately not rom.
I actually had 2 heroes , One got rooted on day and has been ok .
The other ( nephew was using it) was slow and I always assumed it was his stock system, unrooted setup.
When I got the phone back last week, I rooted it , put a few roms on , wiped everything that looked wipable in recovery , put in a new sd card , setup a app2sd partition ( using rom manager ) .
and still its deadly slow.
If it was a PC I would think its faulty memory so only the good portion is working but I have no way of checking. ( unless you tell me)
also the apps2sd might not have taken as i tried to format the partition after creating it and it couldn't find it.
any ideas?
try to flash new roms .....

Awesome, yes.…but ICS will make it slower than ever!!!
First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Nemanja, I'm from Bosnia, 17 years old, been following the forums for a while now but never really had the need to register because I didn't have a Android Smartphone, but now I do, and it's the GT 540, so I am hoping for some good conversations and a lot of nice informations about this phone (already found some neat stuff). Greetings once more.
Now, to some questions.
1. I'm pretty pleased with the phones speed taking into consideration it's outdated, but I'm wondering are there any tweaks to make it a lil' bit or a lil' bit more faster?
2. When I got the phone from my friend, we did a Factory Reset to delete all of his accounts connected to the phone, but the Android Market doesn't work, it crashes right on startup, which sucks, is there a way of fixing this?
3. I want to upgrade to CM7 but I'm totally clueless if I should because the Volume (-) button is not responding, only the Volume (+) button is working, I don't know if that should be a problem because of fastboot, recovery or something like that.
That's all I have to ask now, maybe I'll remember something later on.
Cheers and thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

Thanks mate, been around the forums for a bit longer last night, in the end I did the euro+fast KDZ with Clockwork 6.0 and added Zoe ROM 7.7, the phone works like a charm now!
Many thanks, I'll stick around this forum, it has everything I need for my android
how well does it work im on CyanogenMod10_Final#2.zip, but performance sucks, this aint my main phone so maybe im jsut used to my other LG, anyway i rmb back in the day i used gt540 daily i could play games such as dungeon defenders if swap at 512, and gameloft game suck as avatar, does phone freeze on you?

Well, compared to my 2.1 stock Eclair I have way more RAM when I kill apps, sometimes even up to 77MB but mostly around 55 - 60MB, battery life is kinda good, I really can't tell because I'm always listening to music and surfing the web, but the phone never froze on me.
Only issue I've come across is the Facebook app being way to slow, but when browsing facebook in the stock Browser it works like a charm. So far the ROM is excellent, no crashes, stable, fast, lots of options, standard root, I would recommend it any day!
About games and the swap thing, I'm new to the android world so I don't really know what swap actually does but I didn't download any games yet, so I can't give you an answer to that question

ok let me explain swap in a few words
Swap creates a file in ur sdcard, and uses the allocated space as memory.
swap files do inded decrease ur sdcard life, people say after 2 years of swapping sd card goes dead
another way to use swap
is to format ur sd card into 2 partitions, 1 fat 32 for ur files and the other for swap
basicly swap increases ur phone memory
back in the day i wanted to play dungeon defender on lg gt540 but it needed a phone with 512 ram, so i created a swap file with 450 mb and ran it no problems, altho it ws a bit over clocked not much over 700 otherwise its gonna fc on you or SOD, either way overlcocking reduces ur cpu life , one thing u can also do to improve graphics its 16 bit transparency, but it might get some glitches if it gets ''overflooded''
hope that helps
in sort, ur best option is
format sd card into 2 and make one part ur swap
overclock to 704mhz
16bit transparency
disable stuff on ur phone such as facebook google drive, task killes (use native) also dont use swift key or any other keyboard
