I'm currently using TomTom 5.00 on my Magician (1.12.550 Qtek ROM + 1.13 Radio) paired with a non-TomTom bluetooth GPS with success; but I would like to upgrade to 5.10 to be able to use CheckPOInt in order to show and warn me about all possible speedtraps.
However, as soon as I upgrade to TomTom 5.10 and I launch the application, my Magician turns itself off. Turning it on again results only in it shutting down instantly again. The only way to gain control again, is to perform a soft-reset.
I even tried several cr****d versions of the 5.10 upgrade, but all have the same effect
Oh, my 5.0 version is installed from the 5.0 BakoNL release + the POI patch, but I did try other installations of TomTom as well.
Could anyone help me out ?
Same problem here
I have exactly the same problem. Can someone help us. Pleeezzzzz...
Before I forget ... my reason to upgrade to the latest Qtek Rom in the first place was to get this update running. With my original I-mate 1.11 ROM I did have the same problems.
A collegue of mine has the same version (installed from the same media) running flawlessly on his HP 63xx series, so I think this is related to the Magician and not the software.
Hi,
What you can try is to download that upgrade but not install it yet.
Just unpack it on your computer and find the gps upgrade and the dll file that came with it. copy these files to your my documents on your pocketpc and then launch it (put the dll file in the windows folder first!!).
It works for me
Hi TomTom fellows,
I am currently running the newest 5.10 version on my Magician flawlessy. I have experienced a few problems in the past (expecially with version 5.00) but I found out they were related to the POIs. I have solved them by renaming the POI.DAT to something else. Sure, I missed the POIs, but I'd rather use my personal ones, so who cares.
Give it a try and let us know...
Silver.
5.0 did have some problems with POI, which could be solved by using an older version of the POI file. 5.10 has fixed this and now POI is working perfectly, as well as everything else. If it's not running on your Magician, most likely you have some other software obstructing it.
I don't dare to bet on it, but I'm quite sure I did run TomTom on a clean device with the same effect. Perhaps it is caused by my 5.00 TomTom release icw the Magician then ?
@raouljokhoe : how do you unpack the files out of the official TomTom upgrade? All I have is the setup.exe and a .apk file ?
TTN5
I'm in Oz.
I have TTN5.1 running with no problems at all on my magician.
Also just the 5.0 allows you to add camera POI's and have an alert for any POI catagory you'd like.
I tried TomTom 5.10, it runs perfectly well. But it does not recognize "Major Roads of Europe" Map. So, how is yours?
I solved the problem by replacing the .exe file (only) using the old version 5.00.
And it is now working flawlessly on my 1.01 ROM (yeah!!).
Note: I experienced a lot of problem with 5.00, but then I got a new .exe from my friend, still version 5.00 but it works perfectly.
TomTom has one big flaw: If the currentmap.dat file is not in \my docs\tomtom\ then things dont work properly. I run 5.10 on my magician with no problems but everytime i hardreset i need to replace the currentmap.dat file. The file basically just says where the current map folder is.
My file says:
& \Storage Card\Great_Britian_Plus-Map\

I know that just the 5.0 can warn upcoming POI's, but it is based in number of meters before the POI instead of number of seconds. Also there is no indication when you are speeding. CheckPOInt does all that ...

I don't use the MRoE honestly. I am using one of the Plus maps ... so I could not tell you about the Major Roads ...

That isn't the problem ... The file is there and correct. At startup of 5.10 I even have just the time to see part of the map before the PDA shuts itrself down. The 5.0 version does run well, with POI's and all.
Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem ... and others run TT5.1 flawlessy on their device

At last someone having my problem
I have been getting this very problem too. Searched everywhere to find an answer at last I have found other people who have my problem!
My story so far....
I started with the cracked version originally of TT5.0 which worked ok and I didnt need to activate the maps. I then downloaded the 5.1 update from TT website, I then installed it.
I succesfully launched TT5.1 but it wanted me to activate the maps. So I downloaded the 5.1 crack using p2p software and installed it. this involves switching the pukka tomtom.exe file on your ppc for the cracked one. Soon as i launched the crack version I started getting these crashes on launch that shut down the magician.
So after loads of reinstalls/hard resets I finally decided to go and buy the original discs. So after recieving the discs I hard reset my device (again) and started a fresh brimming with confidence that my problem would be cured. But to no avail using the pukka route with official activation codes and the official 5.1 update it still crashes.
So my theory is given that other users use 5.1 ok that the 5.1 crack is the devil in all this, as its use somehow screws with your ROM rendering it useless to any further reinstalls of the proper the 5.1 tomtom software. And the only way forward is to reflash your rom So this I am now planning to do as one last attemt to get it working and to gain the big storage facilty.
As I now have properly registered software I now put my self in touch with tomtom suport to see if they had any ideas on what the problem was. (obviously neglecting to mention I originally used the crack version  )
Here is the support thread so far

I have just bought your tomtom navigator 5 software, I have installed the version 5 updated it to 5.1 and installed the UK maps. The next step I loaded TomTom from the the today screen to start the set up process but the screen just goes black and crashes mt PDA. What is causing this It's brand new it should just work out of the box and your site says it supports my device?
Customer 03/10/2005 06.06 PM
I have since uninstalled all the software, deleted bad registry keys, and reinstalled, this time I just installed v5.0 which started up and allowed me to activate the maps. So then I installed the 5.1 update and it did the same as before and kept crashing my MDA when youlaunch tomtom. The screen fades to black and shuts the unit off. When you press the power again it comes on shows the nav screen breifly then powers off again. Very frustrating! Please help I so need this to work!
Customer 03/10/2005 09.17 PM
OK I rang your support line tonight, as this system seems slow. They had me hard reset my device and reinstall just tomtom navigator 5.0, which does work. The guy stated that there was no need for me to update to 5.1 as there are no known issues with the MDA compact. But I am unhappy about this situation as I wanted to use either checkpoint or poi warner with the tomtom software in order to give me speed camera alerts. Both these peices of software state they require version 5.1 or higher.
from checkpoint site:
CheckPOInt 5 was created with use of the software development kit (SDK) for TTN 5, and apparently it is required to upgrade TomTom Navigator to version 5.1 before applications created with this SDK can run smoothly.)
I await your resonse thx

Thank you for your email.
We would first like to apologize for the late response of this email. We hope that it has not inconvenienced you.
Your PDA model is not compatible with nor meant to be used with the 5.1 update. All TomTom products and software run on all versions of Navigator 5. As we do not support third party programs, please contact the manufacturer of CheckPOint.

Thank you for you response
I would like to request that this information be made available with the 5.1 download, so far I have wasted nearly 4 days in time trying to get the update to work. A simple statement on your site about incompatibility of the 5.1 update with the MDA compact would have saved me hours of time and will also help future users of the mda compact & tomtom not go through the same thing as me.
I have to say I find it the most bizzare situation that you provide a software update which cant be used with by some models and you don't state this fact on your website.
>>>As we do not support third party programs, please contact the manufacturer of CheckPOint.
No but you provide the SDK telling developers only to write for 5.1!!! If this is the case with certain models you should tell them to write for 5.0. Third party software is all part and parcel of wanting to buy your software had known I would have skirted passed it.

Before downloading an update, there in an information page telling who should download the update and what the update fixes. When your model number or issue is not listed, it shouldnt be downloaded.

Then your site is confusing
It states it is for Pocket PC, my MDA Compact is a pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE
from your site:
This update can ONLY be used when you have already installed a registered version of TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 on your Pocket PC or if you are using a HP iPAQ HW 6510/6515.
fixes:
Improved phone functionality for your Pocket PC
Easier installation of 3rd party (non-TomTom) GPS devices
Improved display on devices which have a VGA display (640 x 480 pixels)
I am using both phone and third party GPS system so this update indicates to me it's for my device!
Please clarify the situation

(I know this post will probably attract some anti piracy responses, but hey I do buy some software, and I mainly d/l it for free to test the software first).
So to establish whether this problem is related to cracked versions of the TOMTOM 5.1 update or not....
Are you using genuine or cracked versions successfully or unsuccessfully on your Magician?
Hello Jimmy ...
You sure went trough a lot of trough a lot of trouble for contacting TomTom support ! I was honestly thinking about buying an official version myself, but apparently that does not seem to be a good solution either then ... since even with the official support and license, they just wimp away any questions regarding the MDA
I'm afraid I will go back to my Alturion installation if I cannot get this issue sorted (yes, it's an oficial one, really ...), although I do prefer TomTom on the PDA
Unless of course a 5.2 release might solve our problems of course !
I seriously doubt the 5.1 cracked version messing up the ROM honestly .... Why only on the MDA then and not on any other PDA make ?
Cheers !
I am using TT5.0 instead of 5.1 because I need to load TT 2004 USA map. I do have TT5 USA map but found 2004 map works much better in California. (TT5 USA map only display INCORRECT exit number instead of exit street name). So far so good until the day I need to search for "Wal-mart" and it crash. Works fine now after I overwrite the TT 2004 USA POI file w/ TT5 USA POI file. I guess it has something to do w/ the POI file format.
I'm getting this same problem with a fresh 5.0 install. Has anyone found a way around this. Also if anyone has a working version of 5.0 on an MDA Compact could they let me have a file list of what is on the SD card as I'm wondering if there is any third party add ons on it.
Well, I gave it another try doing a hard reset but to no avail.
Since others are running 5.10 without any problems apparently, this must have someting to do with either the rom version or the ext_rom contents.
What versions are you using and is the 5.10 upgrade working for you ?
Me, I run the Qtek WWE_11200_550_11200 + Radio upgrade 1.13 on what used to be an Imate Jam. All roms were taken from the XDA-developpers ftp.
@job : I PM'ed you so we could try to find out what is wrong
Hi,
until now i had no problems using TT5.0 on my Magician (original MDAc german).
Yesterday I upgraded to the new 1.13.01 ROM (org T-Mobile Germany). After upgrading to the new ROM-Version and installing TT5.0 it was not starting anymore. So I decided upgrading to TT5.1, but the downloaded upgrade hangs while installing on the device. The only help is a Soft-Reset.
I think, there are problems with the new ROM. Has anyone same problems or a solution for that problem.
BugzBunny
Looks like Extended ROM problems. Try a hard reset and then soft reset the device, just as the 3 seconds countdown appears. Install TomTom and see if it runs. If it does, try installing the prgs of the Ext ROM one by one, until TT fails again. Then you will know the culprit.

Interesting that it says:
"TomTom NAVIGATOR is now compatible with Microsoft Windows™ MOBILE 5.0 devices. See the compatibility list for more information."
And when you go to the list there are no WM5 devices in there

So what is different about this version. Or should I say what is fixed in this version? Does it keep the screen in the current screen mode (i.e. VGA or does it reset the screen to it's own bidged semi VGA size).

OK this is strange and i need some help....
i installed the app in my sd card...
i made the "Voices" folder in the root of the ppc...
and i runed the app BUT (this is the strange part)...
i am still in the preferences screen as after i press the screen to choose a preference i can only get to the next step by pressing the button with the red telephone and then maximizing the app again from spb. the moment i press the red button i can see tom tom proceeing to the next screen and then the app minimizes.
any ideas on this?
thanx
So it's not all good news then. Does this mean that TomTom's 5.2 release isn't quite ready for WM5 after all? Can anybody comment on differences in performance between 5.1 and 5.2? Does the screen still redraw slowly?
well it might be my mistake or something but...
so what about the rest of you? has anybody tested it? how did you installed it?
I did a full install on to the Exec, direct from the TT site download. I had hard reset the phone first, yes you do need to add a voices folder in the root of the SD card, but otherwise it all works fine - you can use the data.chk file from 5,1 if you like the real voice warnings, the only thing you can't use is the POIExtend software (yet) Mike
Downloaded the zip file from TT site unzipped it and ran it, it uninstalled Ver 5.1 for me the reinstalled 5.2 somewhere along the way it requested a soft boot.
It all appears to function. However I have not had chance to test it in anger.
I previously had TTNav 5.1 (plus maps, voices, POIs) installed and running succesfully from SD-card.
Installed v.5.21 update, which said it would remove the previous version whilst installing and gave me a choice of location for only one of the .CABs. Afterwards I discovered 4MB of main/device storage had gone missing, so checked and found that the new version had now installed itself into device storage and the old version 5.1 was still in SD-Card. Upon checking the registry I found all the entries still pointed to the old version in SD-card. Tried installing again, same result. Uninstalled and installed again, same result.
Decided "what the hell", moved all the new version files to the SD-card locations, modified the program menu shortcut to start TTN from SD-card, removed their "stupid" Today-plug-in, and fired it up. Now working again from SD-card, and have 4MB of device storage back!
As mentioned before, I feel TomTom have totally lost their way roll with PDA navigation. TTNav5 is just a bodge on their stand-alone TT-Go product code to get it more or less to run on a PDA.
I think it's been observed elsewhere that Tomtom seem to be writing a standard application that will work across all their supported platforms. This is cheaper and easier to support but is frustrating for power users.
I am now using Navigator 5 in addition to Mapopolis, and I find the delay in connecting to my Bluetooth GPS (GlobalSat BT338) very annoying. There is nowhere to specify baud rate and I am sure that Tomtom every time is scanning the range to find the GPS, it takes so long.
This makes TT fairly idiot-proof and user-friendly, but at the expense of the more technically minded. Of course, supporting technical options ties it closer to the particular operating system, which is probably what they are trying to avoid doing...
Hi all,..
when I use the update from the TT website, and installed it is asks vor an registration code, the activation code...
does anyone alse have this problem?
a
can´t get Tomtom working. when it´s installed all funktions ok.
when i starts it a second time it trays to start but ends up whith "unable to start. an error occured accessing file". Then i have to delete the file named navigator and run the guide and it work´s one time again.
Dont try Kaiser Tomtom on Niki
I think I found the problem. Uninstall the cab for Kaiser Tomtom and install standard tomtom 603
And it works just fine except for the videodriver that sucks.

Hi all,
Have searched the wiki and threads but can't get a definitive answer?
So my question is this....
I have a Vodafone V1605 that is running with its original ROM (which is generally cack but I do use TomTom 5.21 with a Holox receiver which actually works pretty well.
Now, I've just bought TomTom Navigator 6 (latest version and so latest build - can't be precise, but will d/load latest update when s/w arrives).
However, I'm also considering flashing my ROM for a WM6 build (or later WM5 build if that's a no-go).
There's nothing like making a challenge for yourself is there
So basically, is there anyone out there who's managed to:
a) Flash a v1605 successfully with a stable WM6 ROM (and if so, which ROM)
b) Then managed to get TomTom Navigator 6 running on it?
Thanks all - what a hugely useful forum this is!
Mate, as long as your phone is a Hermes, every wm 6 rom works brilliantly but wm6.1 is SPEEDY and some of the newer releases seem stable (its been getting better as the chefs get newer builds). You need to do some research to find the right rom for you as its a personal choice on what you like... DON'T make the mistake of asking what is best as you'll be inundated with answers why people think the rom they are using is best but it may not be the best solution for you...
As for Tomtom, It works brilliantly. Just upgraded to Tomtom 7. If you looked here 1st you would have found it on the site for download. It is offered on the Diamond and has been ripped and modified to work on the Hermes. You still need to purchase maps but it is a hell of a lot better than Tomtom 6.
My suggestion, look here first before spending cash, sometimes you find apps that are as good as or better than their commercial counterparts... There is a hell of a lot of apps out there that aren't available commercially too. Most apps seem to feature here first and then go commercial (a good example is touchflo). Thats not to say that the commercial programs aren't brilliant too and I believe the pittance we pay for them REALLy does help to make some awesome apps..
Cheers...
If you do upgrade your os, make sure you read and do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
Hard SPL is a MUST for anyone flashing roms... It won't guarantee a perfect flash but makes it SOOOO much easier if(and when) something goes wrong...
Also give this a read as you can unlock your phone to allow ANY sim card to be inserted and used - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
Welcome, and happy flashing....
Thanks mate - all sound advice
First thing I did was to install Hard SPL (2.10 Olipro) - better safe than sorry - but that's as far as I got.
I did try to install the latest (final) official Vodafone RUU 2.07.161.1, but it crapped out with Error 260. I decided to cut and run at that point as I was worried I'd bricked the device - but it's all ok now after a hard reset (yes, I'd backed up my data
I'd be using an err... eval version of TT5.21 and it's been great - so much so I decided to cough for a full legit copy (UK and W.Europe) of TT 6 Navigator.
I'll try it on the standard ROM (WM5) but well, you know how it is, I like to have stuff up to date, so it would be good to flash a WM6 ROM. Oh, this and the fact that Vodafone won't give me a phone upgrade until next October!
So I just wanted to hear from someone who'd done it successfully with a full-fat version of TT6 Navigator running on WM6. If it was running with a Holox BT receiver then even better!
S/ware (and 2Gb Micro SD card) here in a day or two - so will sit tight and see....
Thanks!

tomtom works perfectly on the hermes, v5/6 or even the tt7 version. I have it working on pdacorner pro wm6.1 v15 at the moment and it works fine.
So chill out on the worries and flash a wm6.1 rom if you get a 260 connection error try entering the bootloader manually yourself and try flashing it then, just tick the boxes saying you agree and you have an active sync connection(even though you dont). Also if you download one of the latest wm6.1 packages then the ruuwrapper file is an updated version which solves most of the silly errors that pop up when trying to flash e.g. error 260/300 etc

If connection issues are a worry however, now you have Hard SPL you can use the SD Card method. I personally haven't EVER had problems with this and I believe its safer as there are no concerns about usb cables being unplugged, reset button being pressed or powwer fluctuations/outages.
To do this,
1).first format an sd card fat32.
2).Copy the .nbh file in your upgrade directory to it and rename to Hermimg.nbh. 3).Put into hermes and go to bootloader screen ( hold powerbutton, OK button above flywheel and rset with stylus. Hold in until tricolour screen appears - This is called bootloader screen) It should automatically recognise the os flash information.
4). Follow prompts..
Easy as 1,2,3,4.

I've used a fair few of this version: 7.918.9193 VGA and for each of them it installs ok but when using the program it will crash and reboot the phone anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes in.
I've deleted the Navigator folders before the next install and yet it still it crashes!
Any ideas? I only bought the phone cos I love TomTom! I'd be happy with an earlier version if needs be - I only need traffic and speed cams (which I have a subscription to) and I've called TomTom support so when I have the program stable I can hook them up through TomTom home.
Desperate for help here!
Cheers,
Joe
First of all what ROM & RADIO are you using? What other software is installed? It may be unlikely that these are the causes, but you never know.
Is TT7 installed on the phone or the SD card?
Have you ever had it running without a problem?
Have you tried redownloading TT7 from another source?
Have you tried a hard reset and then installing TT7?
Have you tried earlier versions of TT7 (ie 916 and the 917)?
Hi,
I've replied to the questions in line below in case it yields any ideas.
Two things also I'm wondering is:
1. Is it best to have it installed on main memory or SD?
2. I hear a lot about the quality and speed of SD card affecting the lag/performance of TT. What's the recommended size/speed/brand for an SD?
Cheers,
Joe

First of all what ROM & RADIO are you using? - Latest ROM from HTC - _HTC HD2_RUU_Leo_S_HTC_WWE_3.14.405.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship
What other software is installed? It may be unlikely that these are the causes, but you never know. - Nothing at all, fresh flash
Is TT7 installed on the phone or the SD card? - Currently on SD card, but have had it on both.
Have you ever had it running without a problem? - Yes, temporarily yesterday (I only got the phone yesterday). I flashed with the above, installed TT, got my maps working (I've transferred them from my old Xperia X1) then tried tweaking the bif files and read only flags on it to make my traffic/cams subscription work - possible point of failure here but this technique worked well on the old versions of TT I used with the Xperia X1. If TT has introduced code changes which are deep then perhaps this caused the crashes/reboots?
Have you tried redownloading TT7 from another source? Yes, many flavours of the version being used. Some with the extra BT files, but on last install (which has been working for 30mins now) I used the version with the BT files removed.
Have you tried a hard reset and then installing TT7? Yes, reflashed last night and then used TT without BT files.
Have you tried earlier versions of TT7 (ie 916 and the 917)? Yes last night before the reflashing I tried a few versions all with the same effect.

Just to add that it crashed again, so whilst I wait for some advice from the forum members I've stripped back the map folder to not include traffic.dat and speed cam folders, uninstalled and reinstalled to main memory.
It asked if I wanted to set home location etc so it looks like a "proper" clean install this time, will let it run and see how it goes.
