Hi guys,
Im new to the Android scene, and thats because of the N1 got my nexus on order and should arrive shorty in the following week. Been reading the threads here over the last week or so, but alot of things aren't quite clear to me. Especially because im a Android noobie (previous WinMo )
Anyways reading about the Unlocking bootloader and Rooting the device seems pretty straight forward. I understand the consequences of each part and thus appears to be pretty easily done.
The things that i am unclear about are the addon packs and the things it comes bundled with?
- What are the current benefits from flashing these "addon" packs?
- They aren't ROM's just kind of expansion packs right? so no lost data after?
- Wtf is adb? lol i keep seeing it but no idea what it is, thus confusing for noobies like me.
- In cyanogens thread here it says backup using Nandroid, and when i find Nandroid in google i get this. But it says for G1? will it still work fine?
Thankyou for any answers as I believe you will help me to NOT mess up my new phone. I'm sure alot of other people would be thankful for your answers.
Thankyou again!
Hello,
First off welcome to Android, second, get the fire suit on for the "wrong forum" flames.
What are the current benefits from flashing these "addon" packs?
Not a *ton* but there is Tether and other goodies that you can start using.
- They aren't ROM's just kind of expansion packs right? so no lost data after?
Yes to 1st, and there will be lost data when you unlock the bootloader.. if you unocked the bootloader, and then used the phone for a week or so, THEN flashed this addon pack, then no data loss.- Wtf is adb? lol i keep seeing it but no idea what it is, thus confusing for noobies like me.
Android Debug Bridge... its used for debugging. lol....- In cyanogens thread here it says backup using Nandroid, and when i find Nandroid in google i get this. But it says for G1? will it still work fine?
No, the Nandroid backup will be an option AFTER you unlock the BL and install Amon_RA's Recovery image..
Good luck man!!
thanks for the reply.
I'm trying to gather as much as i can before i get the phone in my hands. Maybe because i want to start right away when i get hold of the phone lol You have enlightened me on many points.
I was just wondering also,
I've read about apps such as Nexus Torch and SetCPU which require rooting. Are these apps aquired simply after I unlock + root from the market place? because i read about reinstall su and similar.
Sorry for the noobiness, as i've mentioned im a android beginner and not too familiar with the terms used.
I just want to install some cool apps and convert those iphone users......(my gf )
No they're not required. Rooting is really only for the hardcore phone nerd (which is probably why you're on this site!) I personally am holding off on rooting my N1 until it's fully understood on if it can be re-locked etc. If this is your first Android phone I would recommend doing some reading around on the G1 forum and understand the full capabilities of rooting your device and some neat apps.
**edit
mis-read what you said. Those apps can be obtained from the "Makin Bacon" add on somewhere on this forum. Cyanogen posted it up.

I'm doing the same thing as this guy. I'm super hardcore about customization so I have no doubt that I'll root my phone eventually but not quite yet. Things are still a bit too new and right now there really aren't that many reasons to root (outside of tethering support IMO). If you can live without tethering for a month, then you should wait to root.
welcome
addon packs do a few things to your phone. the biggest things, i think, are the busybox and the dropbear installations, and the tethering apps. some modders also like to "optimize" android too. whether or not it actually works, i can't personally tell, but i take their word for it.
busybox will allow you to run some common linux commands on your android (with a terminal app i guess...) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BusyBox
dropbear is an ssh server so that you can access the command line (and push files to your android) from your computer
tethering means share your cell connection with a computer to give your computer internet. i've used it in many airports, and it's sweet.
like the other dude said, the initial root will require a data wipe, but not the addons. i'm not sure if it's true for EVERY rom (i think it is) but when you first install a whole rom a wipe is required, but when upgrading to a newer version of the same rom no wipe is required. if you like to keep your sms and mms's then it's good to have some of these linux tools so you can move and replace the sms and mms databases manually.
adb is android debugging bridge. it's a part of the android sdk (software development kit) that google gives out for free and is meant to develop apps. with it you can plug your phone into your comp via USB and run all sorts of commands on it from your computer. droidexplorer is basically a GUI for the adb commands, so with ADB you can do all that droidexplorer can do. http://de.codeplex.com/
nandroid is kind of like "system restore" for android. you need to root the phone, then flash Amon_RA's recovery thingy (in one of the threads). once you're in recovery, you can create a nandroid backup (kind of like an image of your current android phone) that you can restore later. then restoring it is as simple as going back into recovery and clicking "restore".

wow thanks vmuch for the kind replies!
i feel like i understand the previous things i've read around in the forum alot more now!
So the question to root or not root, rooting the device would prob be the option for me as:
1) dont really want to do a wipe after a week or two
2) want cool apps such as SetCUP/Nexus Torch
One thing im wondering is whats this about paid apps and rooted devices in the market? After rooting some people cannot see paid apps or something?
Once again thankyou for the kind kind replies and i hope some other noobies like me are learning
If I buy an app (I'm thinking of the Exchange Calendar sync app) and then end up rooting and installing another ROM (say the EU ROM if it has multitouch) will I be able to get my purchased apps working again - or do you have to rebuy them?
If you buy an app it'll always show as purchased on the marketplace so you can redownload it - all the ones I bought on my G1 were still available when I setup the N1 for example.

Wait to root. Right now it's still too unknown on the "ins and outs" of this phone. When I first started rooting on my G1 and MyTouch I wiped a lot while learning things about it. Research while you wait. An OTA is supposed to come out to fix some bugs, and nobody has released any ROMs anyways. And on paid apps, Google Checkout keeps a record of what you purchase, no matter how many times you wipe Market will always have them listed in the "Downloads" Tab as "Purchased" to re-download at no charge.

that happened to me. i think it has to do with the fact that i rooted and turned on my phone before i even put my simcard in. i opened the market and couldn't see "top paid apps" (though i could still search for apps and paid ones would show up). after i turned it off, then put my sim card in and turned it back on, no dice, still no top paid apps.
i reflashed nexusone-superboot-1.1.img with my sim card in this time (can't remember if i wiped. i think it required a wipe) and i turned it on with my sim and voila. paid apps. so it's definitely fixable if you run into that problem.
thanks again for the replies
Im pretty up for rooting upon recieving my handset which should be by wednesday the latest (no engraving), as i ordered on friday 8th. But being the first time im quite scared to do so lol especially on a brand new phone.
But as SystmDcIn said theres too much we don't know as of yet and slowly things are becoming more and more developed as we speak.
The main issue for me is using the phone 2 weeks in and then wiping it clean hopefully somebody will make some cool ROMS soon which include the "addons and goodies" so the process is made way more simple.
Thanks again guys! Well appreciated!
I would also agree with waiting to root. I dont see the benefits of SetCPU for the N1, cuz its already at 1ghz, if it was underclocked i would understand.

I use SetCPU to underclock the device in sleep mode.
I also underclock when I am not going to be using it for long periods.
Saves battery life.
true true, didnt think of it like that. most people want to overclock, i shouldnt assume. you know what happens when you assume lol.
It is a bit of a travesty to do it to this device. Its like putting a Beetle engine in a Porsche.
I can't always be near a charger, and until I can get a bigger battery that will give me more than seven hours, this is the solution.
this being my first android device i have spent hours on end on theses boards and on wiki's learning as much as i can about the phone and the platform... many of these basic questions that he asked i also had not 24 hours ago haha...
that being said, i think a lot of people are moving over to android so what if a thread got started that would answer basic questions that typically ever new user is going to have? ive yet to find a straight forward answer for half of the crap i have tried to find out and having it all in 1 place would be quite beneficial for people switching over... this could be moderated highly to keep it clean and in order?
a nice, straightforward, helpful community would be a nice touch to overtake some iphone shares
I see that you're from Hong Kong also- has your device shipped yet? I ordered mine on the 8th as well and it still shows not yet shipped. Was just wondering whether that's normal as most people state that the device shipped a day after ordering.

Sorry I am not really from Hong Kong lol I'm in fact from UK and Chinese. My Phone will be arriving early next week so whilst waiting, I am trying to learn as much as possible in case i damage my phone being a noob. lol
I agree with JHaste, i think due to the N1 and the upcoming HTC andoird devices. Alot of people will be moving over to Android in the coming 2-3 months. The questions i asked will be asked over and over and some kind of wiki, faq or android bible will be great. If anybody had the time and knowledge of basic rooting, unlocking and flashing could do such a thing it will be greatly appreciated

i think cyanogen's mod includes a backup app (titanium backup or somethin)...you'd be able to save all your data before you wiped it clean (but then you'd need the same backup app to restore it)
I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.

My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
Hey guys.. Basically I'm still sort of new to Rooting, and flashing, and doing all these other things. I have the Nexus One and I was told it's much easier to root and unlock it than something like the G1. then doing the Danger SPL also has me worried.
Basically my mother has the G1, and she used to love it, but between using my N1, and it just getting older she's really starting to complain she wants a new phone.. The 1.6 Email client sucks compared to 2.2 & I'd really like to throw Cyan 5.08 or CM 6 on her G1.
Basically is there anyone in Vegas that would do this procedure for me for a small fee? I cant risk messing it up as she needs it for work n such. PM me if you're in vegas! Thanks!
Froyo isnt avalable for the G1 yet, there are a couple of smashed together builds, but nowt with everything working.

Your better off doing it yourself its not hard. (That's what she said)
And after your done rooting I suggest flashing a 2.2 (Eclair) ROM.
because their the most stable and fastest.
Well, basically I've rooted and flashed many rom's and updates on my Nexus One. But I had someone helping me from Androidcommunity.com and made it easy because we had a few snags and I'm new to fastboot and never done much in command prompt either.
I was told it's much harder, and easier to screw up when rooting a G1. and doing the Danger thing so i can use something like CM5 is even riskier.. Thats why i'd like to just get someone to do it.
as long as I follow instructions it's not to bad is it
If you look around in the development section...you'll see fireats got versdions of cm5 that don't require the dangerspl.
Also, if your mother is needing this phone for business....don't go messing around with it.
Oh and if by email you mean exchange, check out Touchdown in the Market.
This is the site i used when I rooted for the first time. it was easy.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-g1dream/
Rooting the G1 is actually easier than a lot of other phones. The aforementioned 1-click method is probably the easiest way to go. Even though I no longer use my G1 as my daily driver, I still flash it pretty regularly. All my friends with G1's usually have me root their phones. So far I haven't bricked one yet so u should be all good. I'm in Vegas too so if u have any questions, lemme know. Having said that, you should be all good.

Also, there is a shoutbox on CM's forums you could use to ask for help in realtime should you get in a jam. Just do your homework, be confident, and read the instructions!
Am i right in saying Tmobile confirmed the part 2 update would be middle of the month?? was their any solid confirmation on that??

It looks a little beyond my capability... not at all experienced in any of it
For what it's worth:
My G2 is in for a repair. The online repair tracker says that it has been repaired and the next step is 'software upgrade'.
This would seem to imply that the upgrade is imminent, however, given T-Mobile's legendary incompetence and dishonesty.......

I have something that might be worth trying if you wanna take a shot at rooting again Come onto the VillainROM irc (go to www.villainrom.co.uk and click IRC to get a web client) if you wanna give it a go. I can't test as I don't have a 2.1 unrootable phone. But if you understand that clouds might fall from the sky, and that your phone could spontaneously combust (have a fire extinguisher ready ), and you are still willing, give me a shout over there.
The reason I have not posted this is that it isn't tested, so there's no way I'm putting up details till someone has at least made sure their phone doesn't die.

Umm. Not sure what you mean
If you come onto IRC (not WC ), I have something that I can give you to try. It is a zip file. You put it onto your computer and then you run a few ADB commands via a batch file. It should (not guaranteed as it's not tested yet) install patched recovery. You can nandroid etc. from there and flash custom ROM if it works.
We don't need to take your phone away It's just a little file you run that might manage to get recovery installed.
But it might also kill your cat or cause World War III. It's untested, but I am not aware of any other hopes.
Pulser (on chat.freenode.net #villainrom btw)
yeah they are rolling out their update in the Netherlands, runs smoothly.
As for no root access, well I dont bother to much about it, Most custom roms (with all the respect) are not my cup of tea. Some things didn't work the way they should be, and with all those roms I couldn't get my mobile tv to work.
Edit : Mobile TV doesn't work in this rom either, there's something wrong with the HTC updates...
I am donating my Sharp Aquos Crystal to ONLY THE BEST DEVELOPERS. Its beat up and its been abused but there is potential in the phone for root, ROM and Mods. I will pick the developer and i'm basically hoping to send it to the best only! Please message me and let me know if you have any interest in doing substantial research on this phone and taking its code apart. I already tried and it needs a 3rd party program to access the boot-loader portion of the file system and ill tell you which one an provide a dropbox link to the loader you can download to get into it. I could easily take it apart and find a back-door but i work too often and cannot find the time to tear it down properly and look for vulnerabilities for free; Thus i am donating this phone as i will be replacing it with one i never dropped on the floor ;p cosmetically challenged yes, functionally operational YES. comes with a charger, box and receipt? YES. I want this phone to be developed into the most reliable and functional phone possible and if i have to do all the work myself... well i wont. or at least i wont share my findings if i have to spend time away from my family which is why i am DONATING this phone. I am a programmer for a very nice search engine we all use and i have already found 2 back-doors into the phone which i will also send over via PM. the problem is i cannot access the loader or storage from a PC using the standard drivers, only from within the phone. I need your help! You get a free beat up phone, and the opportunity to play with it. It will come loaded with Boost Unlimited to test the MMS, 4G, Calls etc. but i will only pay for 1 month. you MUST figure it out within 1 month! I can only spend 2 hours on my saturdays playing with it and i went back to my rooted G3 because it beats the Aquos in every category except for sleek design. however, i think this phone can be a powerhouse for entry level users and with its power i know it can be everyone's favorite device. I want ROMS. I want unattended root and i want this thing to be the leader in aftermarket mods. Can we make it happen? idk we will have to see. The CM team shot it down instantly and said SHARP will not release the loader in the US but i dont work for SHARP, so here in beautiful southern california i am safe playing with the software and you will be ok because no laws restrict us to OpenWare software like the rest of the messed up planet. I have permission from google to modify the software strictly for research so we are clear.
Message me and lets get this show on the road.
ill send it out via UPS and expect to see results in 1 month

I already shipped the phone out to Palo Alto, CA. I have purchased another 306SH and I am waiting to hear back from the developer, a friend of mine from college. Hopefully by the end of the month we will have unattended root with a rom compatibility list. He has all the time we need to test and program the phone. I couldn't get past ROM upload without bricking the thing so maybe he will discover a better method. Like I said in my original post I only have a few hours a week to play with the code and its not enough time to test any configuration changes without losing my daily driver. (since my company blackberry doesnt make calls outside of company contacts list, I needed my personal phone still, but already replaced it.)
As far as the loader goes, i found a way in using ODIN4 but the newest update locked out the back door so once again i was stuck; my buddy is going to have to find another way into the folder. I will keep everyone posted on the results as i will be testing the first round next weekend. I'm currently playing in Kitchen with CM12 and testing the drivers in my box so worst case scenario i will find the right ROM config and stabilize it so we have at least 1 modifiable ROM to mess around with. I will release download links this coming weekend for the Alpha Release CM12 ROM and with any luck, we will have unattended root as well. I see great things coming soon for this device.
I am also working on a nice little camera mod that we will all use daily from an unreleased packet @ work and cooking it up for the Aquos so stay tuned! it should apk install on factory firmware which is what i will be testing after thursday evening.
Standby team Actual, We will have results soon Hooah!

Successful root was achieved before i shipped it out using company software however i cannot release corporate software to the public since i have no way to remove it from the building (and i value my career.) but soon enough, i will provide source and links to the backdoor once we find the next one in the update. I just wish Sharp wasn't so dang grumpy about releasing their crap OS to developers. If they did, i'm sure most of the android community would be picking these 306's up off the shelves at an alarming rate. Oh well, sucks to be Sharp USA. When they want to collaborate to ID security risks, I will give them the exact same answer they gave me- "Nope i dont care who you are, you are not getting our OS pack or loader software."
hahaha we will see about that ;p

Nope, in fact the opposite. My friend couldn't get into the phone so I drove up to Palo Alto to help him out friday night over the past weekend and it was a train wreck. We salvaged the OP and called it quits first thing yesterday morning. He showed me his progress which was about as far as i got as well. So we threw the broken Aquos at a wall and I sold the nice new black one I purchased, to some guy off CraigsList for $30. Sorry guys but it needs too much work and without Sharp (Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha) providing any information as to what driver/ loader sequence it is we need to tap into the chip via 3rd party, Its a lost cause. (my work console gets into it in under 30 seconds, tho it's very illegal and cannot be replicated without losing my career.) We tried everything for 20 hours straight the first day and 12 hours the 2nd when I finally stood up and tossed the phone down something like 4 flights of stairs and off the balcony. surprisingly enough, it didn't break easily.
I don't have time to tear down the code in terminal and cook the exploit since my job is 50 hours a week already. Any more wasted time on this project and I'll lose my car, job and likely my wife.
I recommend selling the crap Aquos and getting the S6 Edge, which I just picked up today. I already have root access using ODIN and a modified exploit i found on a chinese website and i'm working on a ROM for it as we speak.
Its just a damn shame that Sharp doesn't want their products to take off here in the States, seeing how well the Aquos performs. I explained it to them and they just said "nope! we will press charges if you pursue any further modification."
So Thats the end of that. sorry guys i really tried and my buddy worked for an entire week and only got to where i was after the first 48 hours. I see the exploit looking through the logs, but i was told federal charges will be filed if i release the exploit to the public in the form of auto-run APK which i also could not get running properly. It all comes down to the platform.
They didnt say anything about publiclysharing the code tho. I am having my wife look over the documents for legality issues and if she cant find anything stating raw-code release is applicable, i will release my logs from work and all the project work we have so far. its about 11gbs of logs and code and a few extra gigs of failed modified programs we wrote. Like i said, we tried it all
Perhaps one of you more fine tuned developers can work through my data and see what sort of application will backdoor into the system. As it stands today though, The latest firmware release is tighter than a tick's a$$ and downgrading is about as hard as getting weed legal in federal court.
As my buddy Rob says: "Basically, I can get into iOS' Pants in 12 minutes, but Sharp's Loader is wearing an electrified chastity belt and that b17CH swallowed the keys. We either wait for the next release and modify the stock update so it thinks it's a normal update, or wait for the company to get hammered and drop the pants to let us play."
I have absolute 0 hope for this device.
The Aquos is toasted as far as the modification community should be concerned.
Galaxy S6 Edge tho... This thing is a beast. Ill be releasing my findings tonight or tomorrow once i finalize this ROM modification (cooking up some extra settings, modifying prop and removing bloat + some LED and screen mods.)
I also pre-ordered the new Blackberry Venice that "supposedly runs android" through my companies pre-order form, so in the next couple months hopefully ill get my hands on that unit. BB's have been running Android/ linux based software for quite a while now (since 10.1) but it is emulated and not native. Hopefully, the "venice" developed by Samsung will yield some surprising performance and efficiency results that we all want and need.
Standby Team, I'm working as fast as i can, Hooah!

thanks for information and for your work .. what happen with tools and code that you have can you share it?
ok guys im sorry i have been AWOL this week we started a new project and i just dove into it so we havn't had time to re-work the code. My wife says there is a clause in the paperwork Sharp sent me stating i cannot release any portion of their software whether modified or not. so basically all i can release is the collaborative work i've done with Rob which isnt much because its mostly factory firmware modifications and common knowledge. needless to say, There is a reason we salvaged the OP.
I know alot of you have sent PM asking for clues and access to my software. I have tried to reply to all of you but you need to change your security settings here on XDA because even though you can send me a message, i cannot reply.
I will be sending out the first batch of ADB run-around to PM's that actually go through. The only loophole we can find is private collab which is legal in the US so once i get the first round out, i will email from my personal account the rest of the changes we had made.
*Note* Google is offering $40k USD for the exploits in the new software so you can understand my hesitance to release any loaders that can potentially tap into most phones' firmware systems. That's like handing over 40k for free. Ill tune up and debug the programs rob and i built and send them out but they do not work for the 306. And since i dont have the 306 anymore, i cannot test any more modifications.
Fastboot isn't the way into the 306. you need to get your hands on the initial (Extremely buggy) release, modify the prop and boot directory, and then let the phone update to the new software with the new settings. It will blackout and sit on the Aquos emblem for like 30 minutes, but once recovered the root stays. thats the only way we got it to even try to respond but still no SU access and /detect-root shows no success however there is now root folder access. Then using ADB push the old OS back onto it and it will keep modified folder access for root but will not boot completely at this point. that's as far as we got and couldn't move past it. I asked a coworker last week about it and he gave me some new ideas, however i dont have the phone anymore and i don't plan on purchasing another one since i have moved onto the S6 Edge and another project from work.
Im sorry guys but i'm out of time on the 306. I tried for more than 2 months and its a no-go. I have heard of people gaining root and removing GSM lock, but they have way too much time invested and completely re-wrote the directories by hand.
If you are still dead set on the 306SH, Download the newest firmware, http://www.sharpusa.com/Support/ProductDetail.aspx?modelid=9FCA5482-7A08-1BF8-7AA9-F29AF5CB9A19 and unpack it. connect to ADB and \fastboot-dirw acc1. then # mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19/system, # exit.
Here is the problem. Permissions are set by something else in the ROM and when you attempt to push anything other than a verified update, it crashes. Not sure why. 18 hours on that subject alone -_-
When looking through the Unpacked ROM, It's like line 42-45 and you can see the malicious lockout, that when deleted bricks the phone. I played with the rom and couldn't figure out why every damn program uses the same sequence and references the same directory before it even begins to process. its a classic lock-out. Loader software barely bypasses it but you need to find the drain in the phone. There is an application somewhere that constantly reference checks the line 42 and if its not present, the phone shuts down and bootloader locks up.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade. Its an outstanding phone, but its not worth the headache.
This thread will be deleted in about a month so PM me and make sure you can receive a response.
OP 306SH-Decomissioned permanently unless i get another one. sorry guys. And i go back to school monday for summer classes so i wont be working on anything except work projects for the next 8 weeks. But I will be back with some excellent news for the S6 Edge by sunday night. I have root and I'm on day 5 of my custom ROM and this thing is Fast! like whoa thats a powerPC fast. I recommend the Edge to anyone struggling with the 306. Samsung really stepped it up.

I took a look at psneuter and the root concept mentioned in that thread for method 2. Didn't see anything that would determine permissions to be out of wack. Could you explain what you are referring to @jack_famous?
