Canada contract + operators - Networking

Hi,
I'm moving to Canada (Calgary) in February next year for 8 months approx. I was planning on keeping my Dutch contract to be available in case of emergencies. I have sold my TP2 and am using an old Nokia. Can I use it there or will I get in trouble with different bands used?
And I am also planning on getting a phone + contract (no data) for over there. It is best to take a contract or do a prepaid? What are the operators? Should I buy a cheap 2nd hand phone and take SIM only? Or perhaps a dual sim phone for my dutch sim card.
Thanks for helping me out cause I really have no clue on how the phone market is over there.

Thanks! I'm checking it out now.

For simple prepaid voice, you may want to look at 7-11 wireless speakout.

Is the HD worth buying sim free?

I've been considering buying the HD for sometime now and have been considering buying it sim free for £500 (hopefully due to the proposed VAT drop on Monday) and taking out a sim only contract for either £20/£25 (T-Mobile/O2/Vodafone). I am not fussed by the data packages as I have wifi at work and at home so I can use that instead.
But I have recently seen deals on O2, Orange and vodafone which are tempting but I would have to transfer my number and how easy is that?
I have worked out that if I save £20 every month for two years on a sim only contract I would save £480.
Which would you recommend? Sim Free or contract?
I'm not a big fan of the branding the phone companies do; I really hated the pinky-purple t-mobile slapped on my last phone.
I go my HD from Expansys. So I can choose the contract and company I want (I went again with t-mobile cos I like their data prices) and still get an unbranded HD, whichever provider you go for
Logically, you are better off buying it through contract. However, i bought mine for £500 just because I was impatient. My Polaris was overdue and since the HD was not available directly through O2 and I did not want to wait any longer on missed promises from mobiles.co.uk, I made this move. I wanted to remain on O2 because I like hem and I am a Select customer (don't if it is worth it, but I get 25% discount on accessories). However, I had recently switched my contract to SIM only (700 min + 500 SMS + Web) for only 20. Because I purchased my through third-party, my insurance was deemed null against my new handset, so I cancelled it.
You should not worry about transferring your number; if you buy through mobiles.co.uk, they will deliver the device on whichever SIM is on it. You will then have to obtain the Porting Authorisation Code from your existing provider and the process is straightforward.
To summarise, if you can afford it, I would recommend SIM free; personally, I do not want to be tied up for 18 months. If available, I rather take a 12-month contract and pay the extra rather than a year and half; many handsets can be released during that time and I am waiting for the Omni – it may be the next bigger release for O2 with WM 7.
One thing I like about Orange (after having made sure I got a data bundle), is the fact that if the handset is faulty, they get a new one out to you next day. The courier will come either between 9am-1pm, 1-5pm or 6-10pm. Really good service.
Well if you feel SIM free is too expensive, the trick then is to buy the original HTC handset at a subsidised price with a mobile contract through Expansys. Do this and you can always 'renegotiate' the terms of the contract/tariff with the mobile network directly following delivery of your handset. I did this 6 months ago with an original HTC Diamond, then called T Mobile direct who put me on a combi 30 with free web n walk for £30 to match Oranges data deals at the time. Remember you have a 14 day grace period, use that to your advantage to secure the best deal, but in terms of tariff negotiation, do NOT deal with expansys but the mobile network directly.
Thanks for the advice. What I could do is try and work out a deal with T-Mobile first for a sim only and try and blag a good deal and buy the phone sim free because at the moment I am paying over the odds on my contract.
But carola your O2 sim only deal would be perfect and one thing I notice is that O2 offer the free data blot on with a £20 plan which I think if I talk to T-Mobile might be able to blag a similar deal.

[Q] Walmart Family Mobile

I was at my local Wally-World (WalMart) last night and noticed that they are now offering another pre-paid cellular option called WalMart Family Mobile (using T-Mobiles' Network).
I currently have a G1 and an HD2 (Both T-Mobile branded as T-Mobile USA). Will I need to call T-Mobile to acquire unlock codes for this phones to use on the WFM services?
I have searched the Internet, and the responses are 50/50. About half saying yes I will need unlock codes, the other half saying that I won't need them.
So, I took the next logical step and contacted the WFM Customer Support line. I called 6 times...3 of the representatives said I will not need to unlock them, 2 said I will, and one was unsure if I need to or not.
Does anyone here have any experience regarding WFM and T-Mobile branded phones that are still sim-locked?
Well I have had no personal experience with sim unlocking my HD2, what IO can tell you though is if you will have to get it unlocked to to use the WMF, you will have to get a unlock code. I suggest you do this if you can, call T-Mobile customer service while you are still a T-Mobile costumer (I see under your sig you are on T-Mobile) and tell them you are going out of country some where for business reasons or vacation and want to get a sim card to use a local prepaid local service while you are there so you need a sim unlock code for your HD2 and G1. It is up to you what you tell them but seeing you have two phones you want to sim unlock I would say vacation so you can say you and your wife will be able to use your phones while on vacation. I say contact T-Mobile while you are still a customer because you have to be a customer for them to give you a code, plus T-Mobile will give you the code for free and you will not have to pay for a code from one of the many sites you can buy a code from, plus you will be guaranteed the codes will be valid. Next, after you have the codes in hand, I would go to Wal-Mart and purchase a months worth of the prepaid service for the WMF but tell the Wal-Mart employee you want to use you HD2 or G1, you decide which one as this is a test, as your phone so you just need a sim card for your phone. I have not checked this WMF out myself but hopefully you do noy have to buy a phone to get a sim card. Once you have said sim card put it in your phone and see if you get service, if you do not get service you will have to enter the unlock code to get service.
I am telling you to do this cause if the WMF uses T-Mobiles network then it is a chance you will not need the codes. But then again it is a chance you will need the codes also. So as you said the way I see it you have a 50/50 shot at having to unlock your HD2 and G1. It is better to go at this being prepared than to go into this and not be prepared. Best of luck with your endeavor and please post back here when you have a definitive answer so others can maybe have this question answered.
One more thing if you are doing this because of the impending buy out of T-Mobile by AT&T, thjen it will probable be in vein as you said the WMF uses T-Mobile's network.
I contacted T-Mo to get my unlock code 'just in case'. I did that right after I posted the initial post here. They say I should have it within 24 hours. Here's hoping that I actually get it. (I contacted them a years ago to get an unlock code for one of my Blackberries and never got it).
Anyways, once I get the unlock code, I'll just print the e-mail and take it with me to Walmart when I go get the $25 activation kit (IE: Sim Card).
Walmart says on their site that you can use your existing phone rather than buying one, as long as it is compatible (as long as it is GSM). The website also states that it needs to be unlocked, but as Walmart's main area of focus is not as a cellular provider, I do not put much weight into them saying it needs to be unlocked. It might be referring to non T-Mo phones, lord only knows. I'll find out in a day or two.
As to the reason I am switching....no, it is not due to the AT&T-Mobile merger. I am currently on the T-Mobile FlexPay plan paying $94.34 a month (after taxes) for unlimited everything on my phone. My fiancee's phone is costing $75.67 a month just for unlimited talk and text. That's $170.01 a month for our 2 lines.
With WFM, I can get an unlimited talk/text plan for us that comes out to $70 total for both phones ($45/mo for the first, $25/mo for each additional line). Data is sold in bulk, with the best rate being $40 for 1 gig (or $4 per 100meg). That 1 gig of mobile data should last us quite a while, as the unused portion will roll over each month. Even if we used the entire gig every month, that is still only $110 a month ($70 for the voice/text and $40 for the data). The $110/mo is still $60.00 cheaper. That's a win-win in my book.
The best part is that my phone number (which ends in 4000, perfect for my business) has been ported to Google Voice, so I can keep it and not have to worry if the WFM plans cease to exist if the AT&T-Mobile merger is approved.
Hey sounds like you and your wife are in the same boat as me and my wife. I pay a total of $225 a month (I think? She always pays the bill so I am not 100% sure that figure is correct) for our service with T-Mobile. The WMF thing sounds interesting to me but I would lose out in the long run if I switched cause I run pretty close to the 5GB soft cap T-Mobile has every month. I use my HD2 has a WiFi hotspot all the time at home cause I am not paying the high prices the internet providers want for set up and monthly service around my area. I only have Edge at in my interior area as well so just regular web browsing is fast enough for me. If I want to download anything or watch Youtube videos or any other vedios I just go to a public WiFi spot. If the WMF sold more than one gig at a time of data I might would switch but seeing as they don't I can not right now. Lord only knows what is going to happen to me using my HD2 as a WiFi hotspot when AT&T takes over.
I'm surprised T-Mo hasn't cut your data off yet...I use my HD2 as a wifi hotspot while I am on the road (gotta love it when my phone shows the H rather than E, hehe). Anyways, one month I hit over 10 gigs and they nailed me and throttled my internet speeds for the rest of the month.
It's sad though...there are times that I get faster internet through T-Mo by tethering my laptop to my HD2 than I do on a time warner cable connection.

Ha yeah I do worry about getting throttled, but I really try to just use it for basic wed browsing nothing else while I am at home. For basic web browsing the Edge I get at home is cool, I have never had a chance to try it when I have 3G avaliable. I don't think I have ever seen the H on my HD2 lol. What can I say I live in the boonies
You DO NOT have to unlock tmobile phones to use WFM. I use an HD2 (running windows moblie and Android dual boot) and my wife has a HTC dash and neither is unlocked. If you want to use another GSM phone (ATT) then it will need to be unlocked.
This is the best deal out there if you do not use a lot of data. Been using it since last Oct and am very satisfied.

Thanks for the info there nesta17. this is good to know, I figured you wouldn't have to unlock it seeing as WMF uses the T-Mobile network. But you never know about this mobile carrier companies. LOL
Okay, quick update:
First of all, Walmart sucks! I went to the location here in town late last night to buy 2 of their activation kits (one for me and one for the wifey). I went to the electronics department and told the cashier that I needed to purchase 2 "Walmart Family Mobile Activation Kits"...he said that they can not sell those after 9:00 PM. He stated that was Walmart policy. I explained to him that I only want to buy the kit, I do not want/need him to activate the phones, as I will be doing that at home. He stuck to his story.
As I am a person that rarely believes a word any employee of Walmart (or any other store) says, I immediately went to the customer service desk to inquire. They said that the employee in electronics was correct. Still, I was doubtful. So, I grabbed my HD2 and googled for the walmart that is about 5 miles down the road. I asked for electronics and spoke with an individual named Tom. I asked him if they have the WFM Activation Kits, and he said they do. He then continued on saying that there is no 'activation associate' on staff (the last one leaves at 9PM), so if I wanted to activate in the store I would have to wait until the morning. I told him that I only wish to purchase the activation kit so I could activate it at home. He said that is not a problem, and I rushed on over. at 11:45PM I purchased the kit (well after 9:00PM, proving the first employee wrong).
I get home, activated the SIM Cards without a problem. All I needed was the IMEI of my phones, the activation number for each SIM Card (provided in the Activation Kit) as well as the SIM Card itself (also in the Activation Kit). I popped the SIM card into my HD2 and powered it up. It no longer said T-Mobile on the lockscreen, but read as "Family Mobile". There was no need to unlock the phone, and everything works as expected.
The service is just as it would be with T-Mobile, obviously. I still get the H showing on my notification bar using the same APN settings as T-Mobile. I switch from H/3G/E/G as I drive, so it is correctly changing the network(s) I hit as I drive around (I travel a lot for work).
MMS/Texts/E-Mails/etc all work as expected. I could not be any happier.
I am going to install Windows Mobile 6.5 on it later today just so I can run the Simlock program to unlock the phone, then go right back to Android. (I have the unlock code, I might as well just use it, heh)
I went from nearly $200/mo for 2 phones down to less than $80 (after taxes). I can't complain.
Hey jmhecker check your in box I sent you a PM man.

AT&T Comrades:

Hey...have mine shipping Friday.
I intend on doing what I did with my SGS2 on ATT and that is get it set up on prepaid $50mo unlimited. They sent me my sim card without getting my imei# last time.
Not so now ....they've become adamant about this now.
I'm going to use my imei from the Note...but just tell them its an old unlocked Raze or something .Since its GSM....they can't tell I think.
Does anyone know if there's anything/code in these #'s that indicates whether or not its a smartphone or not. (Smartphones not allowed on these plans).
Thanks
As you are aware ATT doesn't sell international galaxy Note's so when they see the Notes IMEI register on their network OLAM will not know what device it is when it cross references its device list.
This is why you can have the $10 medianet unlimited plan when you use an unlocked, unbranded phone that AT&T doesn't offer. It will work exactly the same way as unbranded Nokias and the gt-19000.
but where do you get the sim card from? they send it to you?
Buy the cheapest phone they offer. When they ship the phone to you simply use that SIM card in your unlocked unbranded device.

Also other idea:I buy two SGSII for 200.00US and sell on ebay for 450.00 for downpayment for the Note
Good stuff guys!!
I am on T-Mobile right now and I am thinking of
1. Removing my unlimited data plan from TMo
2. Go to their lowest monthly plan just for the calls ( i wud not want to totally get rid of TMo for now)
3. Get a new AT&T plans, with a descent phone
4. Sell the phone eBay/Craigslist
5. Fwd calls from my Tmo # to AT&T
6. Use Note with AT&T
Just waiting for Note to launch in more European countries which MIGHT bring down a price little more (I hope)
Thank you.

So i can just get one of those Gophones for like $20 and simply switch over the sim card to the Note?? It's as simple as that and i don't need to do anything else? Also if i do this, will i be able to port my existing verizon number over to at&t?
If I'm already on AT&T using a Nexus One, can I shift my existing number to prepaid if I get some crap phone?

Travelling to the US

I'm planning a trip to California in the near future, and because I live in Canada, I'm trying to plan everything out beforehand to cost me as little as possible. The main things that will probably cost me a ton are going to be text messaging and data.
I had read an article online that described how I could buy a prepaid SIM from AT&T and just use that because my phone is already unlocked (with rogers at the moment). Is this a viable solution? If it is, how would I order or buy a prepaid SIM before I leave?
Thanks. Any help is appreciated
Edit: I have a nexus s 19020A by the way
Edit: I'm guessing that I will also have to take on a US number. Is this correct?
I can only give my experience with 9020T on T-Mobile while I was there for a few days, which I guess won't really help you, but I'll share none-the-less.
If you are there for only a short while and have a T-Mobile compatible phone, it might be worth getting a SIM card (online if you can, cheaper), and purchase pay-by-the-day pre-paid plan. For $3 a day, you get unlimited talk/texts/data, which I thought was extremely useful during the days I spent there.
T-mobile is better and cheaper than AT&T. You will have an American phone number as long as you use and American SIM card.
I live in Winnipeg and I go down to the Minneapolis-area twice a year. I purchased a T-mobile SIM card, and for $2 a day went on the EDGE-speed unlimited calling/data plan. It literally is $2/day, and if you don't use it at all it doesn't charge you. It cost me $12 for the SIM, and that gave me $4 credit... although I think it might be more now (maybe $20). Data speeds were slow, but not unbearable (Google Maps worked really well, for example). Texting and calls throughout the US are included, unlimited, as is voicemail and call display.
Don't forget to sign up with Google Voice with your US number while you are down there, too!

I'll definitely take that advice. Did you order the SIM to be sent to you or did you pick it up while you were there? I'll look into changing my current google voice number (I'm not sure if it can be done), but I have a ton of internet calling/texting apps on my tablet as it is. Did you use your nexus s?
thanks
does anyone have experience with ordering a t-mobile SIM to canada? I'm thinking I might go with the $3 per day unlimited plan just for convenience sake

I would highly suggest picking one up when you go down - just pop into a T-Mobile store. They will give you a local number, etc.
The $2/day is EDGE speeds, but unlimited. $3 will give you 3G.

Is there any expiration date for the SIM cards, T-mobile and AT&T? For I usually travel to US only about twice a year, if the SIM card expires in 3 or 6 months, then, it is not worthwhile to keep it. Thanks.

You lose the number/time after 6 months... but you can add money online. I've gotten into the habit (just once so far) of adding $10 every 6 months to keep it active.

How much does it cost to reactivate if you lose your number? I'm thinking that I'll pick up a SIM when I go down there so I have some kind of phone capabilities and just pull it out of my phone when I get back to Canada. I'm guessing that I would only have to pay for the use I get out of it in the states and that I can pop it back in if I go back before I lose the number? Also, would any settings have to be changed on my phone or is it as simple as switching SIMs?

You will need to give us back your old T-Mobile or Orange handset. The handset must be in perfect, working condition and be capable of being switched on. We will not accept handsets that do not turn on or are damaged; that have cracked or scratched screens; or that have cracks to the device casing. Our retail staff will decide whether to accept your phone based on its condition and their decision is final. You should back up all contacts and data from your old phone before giving it to us.
4G Coverage
We have limited 4G coverage in the UK. You can only use mobile internet on our 4G network if you’re within a 4G enabled area and in range of a 4G mast. 4G is only available in select cities in the UK. Your 4G phone may not be compatible with other 4G networks outside the UK. If you don’t have 4G coverage, your phone will drop back to our 3G network if you’re in a 3G covered area. You should check your personal 4G coverage before you move to EE at www.ee.co.uk/coverage.
Returns policy regarding your new EE plan
Your new plan purchase on EE is subject to our returns policy which you can find at www.ee.co.uk/terms. If you return your phone within 14 days of purchase in accordance with our returns policy, we will give you back a phone that is the same model as your old one and in the same condition.
We may remove this offer at our discretion or change or vary these terms and conditions at any time.

Good deal as i was quoted £149 to get the ONE before this deal came out:crying:
I just took my htc one x into the ee shop and did a early upgrade ( I had 10 months left and orange had says £255 to early upgrade and had to pay ee on top)
I told them about the above offer as they didn't know about it
they checked and says ok showed them my phone ( only want handset in working condition )
then did a upgrade
was on orange paying 41 quid for 800 mins and unlimited texts and 3 gb web
now unlimited mins and texts and 2gb data - lad added 1gb to my 1gb package so ask about it say 1gb not enough but don't want to pay for more and should give u it
it cost 29.99 for hand set but no other costs
got new sim but took mins to port over (says could take up to 2hours)
ps can work for any 4g phone not just htc one :good:
says offer ends on 30th so don't know if they do it after mind or I would of wated for black one but silver is nice and no cracks at top

I don't know but I managed to get 2gb from them instead of the 1gb that's advised for 41quid which im happy with cos I use Wi-Fi most of the time and don't use much more than a gb
you cant go for a cheaper deal than you already pay or get a less contract than your on
prob depends on salesperson but shy bairns get nout so always worth trying for some extra gb,s
don't forget to tell them you seen the offer on there ee website in the move to ee section
That deal is crafty.
In the small print it's subject to a renewing of your contract.
So you may as well sell your current mobile, and take out a new contract.
Least you'll be better in pocket.
Unless you have one hell of a contract, I'd doubt it's worth doing.
Got excited until I read the list of applicable phones. Was thinking I could slip my orange SIM into the DHD and get an extra HTC One effectively for free. Oh well.
(Are the in-store staff likely to know the difference between a DHD and a One X?)

i was told i had to pay £255 for 10months left on my contract to move to ee from orange with 33% discount then £69 for htc one,
- a htc one x is worth about £130-160 on sell your phone sites but may of got bit more selling private,
i wanted to move to ee with this phone so it worked out good for me as i ended up paying only 29quid for a top 500pound phone and only paying the same for contract but had to extend it a extra year
the phone was free and 14 months old
so to me i got a new phone early for a old dated one and only payed 30 quid so im happy lol

they never checked mine he just asked if it worked i swiched it on and he says ok
but as i was about to leave i head his boss says to him to mark my detals in the box ????
I am currently on a £26 o'er month for 600 minutes and unlimited landlines text and Internet.. trying to decide if 15£ increase is worth..
the prospect of a terminating contract early is quite tempting...

I'm doing this, with my T-mobile phone, done it monday, well I pre-ordered the HTC One so I could hand in my HTC One X. I had to pay a £20 deposit to pre-order so hopefully i'll only pay £9.99 to get the £46 contract. Still not got the phone and its now day 4 of waiting, wonder how long it will take to get the phone!!!
