So that time has come where my MDA vario III, is a bit worse for wear and it's time for something new.
Is the G1 up to the standard (and then some) of the Kaiser spec.
My main uses are heavy normal phone and sms use, tomtom, a bit of wifi, and other usual pda stuff like calculator, calandar, games etc. After a ROM flash (to Sleuths) it was great and not buggy or sluggish.
The kaiser let me down on call quality, bluetooth quality (with jawbone II still no good) and the speaker & camera were a joke.
Can the G1 fill the gap that is going to be left when I put the Kaiser to rest?
well, so far the G1 is a nice phone...good call quality...bad battery...wifi works well...as does SMS and such.
there is currently no tomtom for g1 but that will probably change next month. calculator calendar and games are better than on windows mobile and the touchscreen kick's the kaiser's @$$.
i'm not sure about bluetooth quality...i'd assume it's good although there is currently no support for bluetooth file transfers.
i think speaker and camera are pretty good.
I think It's a good upgrade. I upgraded from Kaiser myself.
The screen is better both resolution- and touchwise. Android really blew me away. As I use many Google services daily It's really important for me. I find the GPS accuracy better. There is now a tilt sensor just like a currently released phone should have. Mounting the microsdcard via UMS on Ubuntu still allows you to use the phone (probably the same with Windows). The trackball is really nice.
On the bad side; battery drains quickly, there is no videocalling camera (mainly thinking about the new Googletalk webcam feature), no neckstrap attachment hole available (I've solved it in my own way) and no possibility to use the phone as a modem like my Kaiser (afaik).
Currently I'm wondering why I'm not prompted about an OTA upgrade and all custom ROM links on the WIKI are dead.
edit:
Using CFW now and i figured out how to use it as a modem.
I had a kaiser, and I loved it. I since bought a Raphael, but work have just bought me a G1 to play with and I'm in love.
So right now, I've got a Raphael and a G1, and the G1 is so much better it's embarrasing. Just waiting for the battery life and range of apps to catch up.
Hey, it's all about the track ball. I also have an iPhone 3g to play with, and I find it inferior to the G1 but superior to the Raphael (and Kaiser). Hardware kb and track ball kick iPhone into touch for my money.
The browsing experience on the G1 is superb, the best of the lot for me.
However, until all the software I use on the Raphael or equivalent is released for Android, I'm not yet ready to ditch WM and the Raphael.
Luckily for me, I have all three toys to play with, but the G1 is my absolute favourite by far.
I have had the Kaiser, am currently using the Raphael and also have a G1. Personally the G1's battery life is the biggest drawback for me and that it does not support WPA Enterprise which my school uses everywhere and I have no cell reception on campus so the phone is basically useless to me when I am at school. If these problems were solved, I would definitely choose the G1 over the others.
Thanks for the responses people - much appreciated.
It seems like the G1 will be the way to go. I was considering the raphael before the G1 came out but it seems like it's really not enough of a step up from the Kaiser.
I will never go iphone - overpriced, underspecced, and I'm not paying over a $1000 a year for the most basic (cheapest too!) package AT&T have. They do look nice and the screen was a ground breaker but everyone I know that has one has to literally charge it everyday and the limitations are too many.
I know that's probably going to be the hadrdest thing to deal with switching to the G1 - I got about 4 days to a single full charge with my Kaiser.
Thanks again!!!!
I also had a kaiser and the g1 is superior by far.... windows mobile is still buggy no matter cooked rom is installed in the phone.... the phone that can give the g1 a run for its money is the blackberry storm and nokia e71 and n97....
I'm in the same boat.... could upgrade to the g1 next week and most likely get a reduction in rental too (customer of almost 3 years) but am stuck between this and the touch hd..... keep getting swayed both ways!!
Have to agree with Miguel though and I think he's swayed me to the g1... windows mobile is extremely buggy and slow so maybe I should jump ship now and consider coming back for Windows Mobile 7.........
i just upgrade my at&t tilt with a g1. After a couple of days i think was a good choice
the screen is amazing , the touch is another generation from the tilt .
i was missing htc connection manager but i replied it with aSetting.
the gps from the satellites not from the network is faster to fix the position than the tilt
the keyboard still good for me but the slide system on the top look kind of weak.
the only big problem is the battery , the tilt wasn't good ether but the g1 is worst.
i go to sleep with 50% and i weak-up with 20% left , maybe there is a way to close all the programs in the background ?
another is the tilting of the screen i have to say that i miss it.
and another issue is the network i don't know why the g1 lose more often the edge or 3g connection
Christian
The hardware is solid, the OS is generally better, but the software support isn't there yet. It does sport arguably the best web browser in the smartphone market right now (probably tied with iPhone), and the app support will probably pick up dramatically in January when the paid apps system goes live (of course, then you'll have to pay for stuff).
Very fun phone, but not really a productivity workhorse. I never used my WinMo phones for productivity anyway, so I don't really miss it, but the lack of decent games is kind of a bummer.
Well seem as there are endless threads with people moaning how much they dislike the HD2 I thought it was time to have one for people that are actually happy with it, because in fairness it’s by far the best phone I’ve ever purchased.
I’ve owned an iPhone and yes there are things that I miss like the great 3D games and apps in the App store, an integrated music store and most of all the genius playlist feature in the music player. All this is just software features though, and by the sounds of it WM7 will integrate them.
You think how much revenue Apple make through the iTunes music and App store you really think Microsoft are going to miss out on that opportunity? (Well okay there is the Marketplace but let’s face it, it was slapped together in 5 mins and that’s how it looks!)
Rumours of Zune integration have been mentioned several times and what a perfect way to introduce Zune into the European market. (You noticed how it’s been integrated on the Xbox in the past few months...)
Just a bit if patience is all that’s required. Have a feeling WM7 will cover all Windows Mobiles short comings.
However enough of what missing – now the good bit - the hardware kicks ass!
The screens amazing (My iPhone screen looks so tiny and low res when I use it now) and I love how responsive it is... everything’s instant and smooth. The phone looks amazing, love the brushed metal back and that slightly rubbery feeling black plastic, it feels expensive and looks great.
SenseUI is a joy to use. The weather background is a really nice touch and actually useful. More so I love how it uses the GPS and always knows where you are! Music player is good, love the cover flow art (yes they blatantly nicked that idea but least it looks great and works just as well)...
Internet is by far the best on a mobile. The large screen really shines through; it’s not far off a desktop experience and very useable.
Mine also came with CoPilot installed which I purchased (£27 with European map – bargain!) which works brilliantly... as good as a proper sat nav.
Lots of little things finish it off, the screen doesn’t just come on, it smoothly brightens... if someone calls me who isn’t in my phone book it asks me after if I’d like to save that number for future use... the ringer quietens when I pick the phone up... the list goes on...
I’ve had it 3 months and still love it as much as day one.
Okay it has frozen up on me a few times (It runs Windows, I mean come on a version of Windows that didn’t crash? Well that wouldn’t be right would it?) Since the firmware upgrade it’s actually been very stable (so far). Do still get the odd freeze when sliding to unlock which can be annoying. Nothings perfect and it can all be solved with software updates. (Oh and the battery lasts one day, I know, but some of us sleep at night and therefore find time to charge it!)
Anyway that was an essay but thought it was time that maybe we focused on all the great things for a change. Makes you wonder if people dislike it so much they don’t just exchange it? Most networks give you 14 days to swap (Well Vodafone did, I'm sure others do). Its funny how iPhones short comings always seem to get ignored isn’t it? It was launched in 2007 and software wise it was groundbreaking but its 2010 and little has changed... the HD2 makes it look, well... very 2000 and late
Glad to hear this against the backdrop of all the whining and distraught posts
"HTC SCREWED US!" lol.
+1, like this love my hd2 too
+1 love my HD2 really sweet and getting better by the day.
+1 love my HD2
I actually love my wife...
but HD2, I like quite well, too.
Lol... my girl friend has been complaining about me ignoring her and spend most of my free time on my HD2. (she asked me to hug the HD2 to bed! ) but that had changed though..
Love my girl friend first.
then the HD2..
+1 me too, absolutely love this beautiful beast of a phone, especially with the new 1.66 rom its amazing!
Agree
Agree with everything you say, i"ve had many mobiles and PDAs over the years including the iPhone 3Gs but nothing comes close to the HD2 at the moment, Fantastic Screen, Powerful Processor and very Fast and Responsive. Has everything i need. but more Apps will be great.
I had an HTC Diamond before I got my HD2. Its such a big step up.
Loving the GPS Never owned a GPS device before, and it sure is handy.
I love GOD, my wife, my family and I love my HD2!!!! Its "Fantabulous"... the best thing since sliced bread. )
I have to agree with all of the above.
I am somehow new to the smartphone mobile world ... had owned a N73 (nokia was my first love), an HTC Diamond (beautiful phone, also very customizable) continued with an Iphone 3g (very good for a while by my history with the Diamond made me miss it's overall liberty of choice and flexibility. The HD2 brought together all the things I loved about the previous phones; N73 camera (good camera for it's time, same with the hd now), Iphone's capacitive screen (we must admit, they started it) and the Diamond's screen quality, high resolution suitable for the screen size, the customization level (i must thanks MS and XDA).. and more, great hardware (with nice surprises, see the RAM discoveries).
Conclusion: I love this phone with all of its occasional lock-downs
+1.....Fantastic phone and more....Sure there's bugs.....but since the introduction there already have been some new Official ROM updates from HTC, so I guess that they are indeed listening to the people roaming around this place, and I'm sure that more Official ROM Updates will follow the next couple of months, which make it possible for the wonderfull cooks at XDA to perform their magic
I for one, will not be changing to another Mobile device for a long time !!!
I loved it with 148 and love it even more with 166, smooooth
I love my HD2 also.
Before I had a Qtec 2020i with 2003SE. Now the HD2
WinMobile is good and give you still some freedom. Freedom is something that you cant find by Apple. What I like most is the sync with a pc. The agenda and contacts works fine.
Together with a program Pocket Controller Pro, I can remotely type sms and other stuff. It is true that in some cases you need to search for a solution and it is not simple for some of us. But finding the solution give you even a greater satisfaction. The HD2 is not cheap but you get a lot for your money.
I agree too, Best phone i have ever had, definatly gets better every day, customised perfect for my needs, Excellent !
Can I just add to this:
I love God, my wife, my cat and the HD2.
In terms of instant gratification, however, I prefer the HD2. Mind you, the cat comes close.
rjstep3
Upgraded from an LG Secret myself, hell of an upgrade.
+ 1 Happy HD2 owner

Hi,
As the title says, just looking for some feedback from those who had a tp2 and moved to N1 - is there any major disadvantages of the N1 over the tp2 (omitting obvious keyboard)
I hear the speaker on the N1 is bad and the speaker on the TP2 is awesome, can anyone verify this?
I went from tp2 to n1. The keyboard and speaker are all I miss. The n1 is the much better phone and toy : )
I moved from TP2 to N1! I had a g1 before the tp2, and now getting back to android, I wonder why i ever left!
The speaker is the only thing i "miss" i didnt really you use it often though...
The N1 is soooo much better than the tp2
Former (mostly happy until the touch screen died) TP2 user here. I love the Nexus One. I miss the hardware keyboard, obviously, but swype makes up for it.
The unit is incredibly responsive, and now that we have sense ported on the N1 the Exchange integration is excellent.
Now I don't miss the TP2 at all. Especially since I love tinkering with the OS and Android is better than WM for that.

The speaker on the TP2 was the best of any phone I've heard or used. As a result the speaker on the N1 was a let down.
However, the phone itself is outstanding. The build quality is quite good and the SW keyboard isn't as hard to adjust to as I had expected (especially in landscape mode).
The only thing you haven't touched on that I would mention is that the TP2 (CDMA at least) had *outstanding* battery life. The N1 is no slouch when it comes to battery life in the smart phone arena, but I did see better battery life with the TP2.
speaker was good
keyboard was really good
i want the htc clock but dont know the settings for the weather widget.

weather skin downloader > h7c.zip
then install from SD card
clock skin downloader > h7c-clock.zip
then install from SD card.
Maybe you only have to do one or the other, but i did both to be safe and it worked.

+1 same here. This was also my 1st android device, came from many years of WM devices. I don't regret a thing. All pro's, zero cons.

those can be found here
edit: but, apparently it isn't as simple as 'move to sd card and install'. gotta pick up 'weather widget donate' from the market to use this
i did t hat, but the clock looks really scrunched in. also the black background doesn't cover the whole clock + weather.
i went from a TP2 as well. the speaker was nice and i do miss that and the keyboard sometimes but other then that im happy with my switch. windows mobile was so boring and dull to me and going to android has been good so far with no intention to going back to the TP2 and WM for that matter. N1 is a really nice phone
well i just sold my TP2 and my N1 should be here in the morning but I can tell you one thing... I love android, and as a previous G1 owner, I missed being able to mess with the OS. WinMo was too intricate and seemed "junky" whereas android is just PNG and XML really...
Another Happy TP2 -> N1 customer here. Few points:
Speed - the N1 is VERY quick compared to the TP2 (stock TP2, running WM6.5/Sense 2.1). No lag, everything works instantly on the N1. Phone doesn't slow down after a few days uptime, there's no lag in SMS or MMS.
Keyboard - The major concern moving from TP2 was the lack of hardware keyboard. That was one of the major factors in my decision not to get the HD2. Hardware keyboard IS better for typing longer pieces of text (i.e a decent length email for example) but for the standard phone texts/mms/short mails/web browsing/IM the N1's keyboard is fine. Enabling haptic feedback and using in landscape mode makes it a doddle to use, rarely now have to go back and correct words etc. Yet to try non stock keyboards, these should aid the transition even more.
Look and Feel - The N1 is MUCH more attractive that the TP2, however I sometimes find the N1 a touch on the small side - that being said it's probably more due to being used to the larger TP2, the N1 is certainly easier to used 1 handed than the TP2 tho do sometimes feel like I'm going to drop it!
While HTC's sense was full of eye candy, with a couple of widgets and some time Android can look just as good (and that's before you consider the custom ROM's with sense etc available)
Android vs WiMo - Night and day here (and this is probably the biggest "love" for me at the moment). Everything is at your fingertips. It's so easy to take a pic and whack it on facebook, send it via MMS or email. Check google maps or browse the net. It's all there, and really quickly available. The app store is pretty acomplished too, easy access to a load of apps - something which (last time I checked) the MS stored was lacking in.
Moving from a non smartphone to the TP2 was a pretty big jump. Good net access on the move, easy access to email and other information. The jump from the TP2 to N1 was probably equally as big. All the previous information is available (only MUCH faster) + a whole load of new information, apps and ways to keep in contact with people.
Hope this helps
I also moved from a touch pro 2 to a nexus one (with an iphone 3gs in the middle meh not even worth mentioning lol) and yeah I have to agree with everyone else. The touch pro 2 is a great phone but nowhere near as awesome as the nexus one but I'll probably end up swapping my nexus for the touch pro 3 or whatever they decide to call it.
*sigh* dont you just hate it when something so cool and new becomes redundant and old like 6months later..
Bought Them Both at the Same Time
I actually bought both the phones at the same time, after my HD died (I killed it when I opened it up).
The TP2 like everyone says is a great phone. Though the GSM T-Mobile US version (that I had) had pathetic battery life (Compared to my Blackstone). But the TP2 can not hold a candle to the N1.
The only thing I miss from the TP2 is the EXCELLENT speaker, and the keyboard.
The N1 is sleeker, it's RIDICULOUSLY FAST! the display is superb. I can do about 10 things in the time it takes me to do one thing on the TP2. Combine that with Xralogic Remote Desktop Client, and Documents to Go Pro, and you have a WM replacement.
Trust me, I'm no Windows Mobile Hater, I'm actually an advocate of WM and I have been for the last 7 years, but the the N1 is just a superb phone. I've had the G1 and the Moto ClIQ, but I went back to WM but the N1 is awesome.
I am looking forward to owning a US T-Mobile branded HD2 though.
I hope you find this useful .
wow... seems to be that the general consensus here is loving the jump they made from the TP2 to the N1... honestly, if there had been a stable fully working haret build for XDAndroid on the TP2 i maybe would have been a little more hesitant. I loved the keyboard, and i loved the solid feel of the TP2. But i strapped on a hardcase with silicon lining on in and out and this phone feels great now. I have yet to root, and this is the longest I have held out on rooting/flashing a device. I am pretty sure that once someone figures out how to relock the bootloader (if at all possible) I would go ahead and root. But I also wanna use this phone stock for a few weeks just to test the waters and make sure no glitches/disfunctions happen. (dust under screen, nonresponsive touchscreen, just little things that i wouldnt be able to get fixed once the warranty is void)
I got my HD2 about 6 months ago and love it. There are many small reasons why I chose it over others:
1. I use Hotmail, MSN Messenger, Media Player, etc so Windows Mobile would suit me without having to open any new accounts.
2. The hardware. It was (and still is) one of the most powerful phones in terms of hardware.
3. Physical Buttons. I tried using my Dad's Touch HD and got really annoyed when using the 4 buttons on the bottom because there was no instant feedback as to whether it had recognised that you'd pressed it. There was a slight vibration but it's not the same as the 'click' of an actual button. Also, if the phone is on a go slow then the vibrate confirmation wouldn't kick in for a few seconds meaning that you'd think it didn't register, and then pressing it multiple times.
4. Big screen. I would have loved a physical keyboard, but I realise that to have one, it would mean extra bulk. I liked the bigger screen because it means that the keys on the keyboard aren't too small. The keyboard on my ipod touch can feel fiddly sometimes and feels a bit small for everyday use.
5. This site. I don't know how well WinMo would do without all of the XDA Devs but they really do add a lot more functionality. My hat goes off to all of you!
I would add Android as well to the list but it was only a pipe dream when I first got my phone and wasn't a deciding factor.
I was just wondering what the reason you all had for choosing the HD2 over other phones? It'll be interesting to see what you all have to say
Mostly due to the fact that is probably the last GREAT WinMo phone before WP7 comes on the scene and kills off the most customisable mobile OS left.
It's a phone, it's a music player, it's a satnav, it's cheaper and it has a better screen than an iphone.
Mostly due to the big screen and the hardware of it, I wasn't too bothered atleast about the apps since I already have an ipod touch so I normally carry that around so I get the best of both worlds especially cause I can share the itnernet from my phone to my ipod.
But mostly it was the big screen, really makes surfing the web the easiest of all phones I find
..
i was between Desire and HD2. I like android more, but crappy touchscreen(as seen on google) made me turn to hd2.
not sorry for one moment about that choice
1. I'm comfortable with WinMo
2. My work has an app that needs WinMo. In recent months I found that I won't be needing to run that app, however.
3. It's customizable. iPhone still seems like a smartphone for dummies.
4. I guess this is part of #3, I want to have my information in front of me, now and on a big screen. On one customized screen, I know the weather, time, email count, messages, and most importantly, upcoming events. With iPhone, I'd have to go into apps looking for the information. It's what-to-do (WinMo) vs what-can-I-do (iPhone).
5. Form factor. At first I thought the screen might be too big. Now I won't get a phone with anything smaller. It's thin too. When I first got it, I felt like I was holding a picture frame to my head.
6. At the time it wasn't a factor, but dual boot to Android is fantastic. I'm actually running Android all the time. There's not much missing from mattc froyo build.
I had faith that the guys from xda would force android on to the hd2. The a number one reason why no other phone matters is cause of the screen size. atleast on t-mobile.
soon as i saw the wiper on the weather i had to have one, lol, hated it for a fair while.....after getting brave, cant stop playing with it, now love it!!!
The flashlight...
The big screen and the hardware. I also took a calculated risk that it would be updated to 7 series. DOH!
RReckless
I bought it because....
.....actually i owned an iphone 3gs for 2 days but then it got stuck and couldnt turn on..
So i sended it back to apple store and i was waiting till they fix it, but it took them so long so i bought the leo while waiting for the iphone 2 b repaird...
i remember it was monday when i bought my leo, and as soon i had the box in my hands they called back from apple store and said - sorry we cant repair your iphone so you get a NEW one
But then i kept my leo and sold the iphone, and i havent regret at all!!!!
i HATE iphones (anything with that stupid piece of fruit on it actually!) and this is pretty much as opposite to an iphone as it gets; its ot a good screen, a good camera with a flash, it can be tweaked/hacked/modified and its using fast, new hardware. i had a nokia n95 before this, and the screen was huge in comparison-and so thin! ive dipped in and out of windows mobile so had some expeience with it. i used pocket pc 2002, windows mobile 5 (t-mobile mda vario 3) which is when i first used xda to get wm6 onto it. since then i couldnt find a pda that did everything i wanted. now my hd2 has replaced my camera, my mp3 player, my usb flash drive, and is now my main device for news/weather and social networking. the big screen makes things so easy, and despite the heavily biased reviews that all seem to say something along the lines of 'well its not an iphone so its rubbish', im very very happy with it. only thing i sacrificed was battery life, as my n95 could probably go a day on heavy use, whereas the hd2 will be dead early evening time. ive also developed paranoia about scratching/cracking the lovely big screen on it
i was gonna get a desire but (imho) its butt ugly i really liked the look of the hd2 but wasnt too sure about winmo however when i saw the development going on in the forums i decided to get a hd2 and havent looked back
In the Poll I chose 'Other' because ALL of the other options applied to me....
Why I chose the HD2....
1. 1Ghz CPU
I remember the first widely available 1Ghz DESKTOP Processors. I remember being in awe of the GIGAHERTZ trophy everyone wanted. I remember being amazed at the fact that a home computer could have a ~1000Mhz CPU.
I remember a similar feeling when I heard about the HD2
2. My last phone was a Touch Pro2 and in the short time I had it I actually grew to love Windows mobile Probably because it was my first ever smartphone (previously a samsung jet owner).
I decided the TP2s successor should have WinMo too! .
The HD2 was the obvious choice.
The thought of having a free upgrade to Windows phone7 swung the decission even further in the hd2s favour.
3. THE SCREEN = BIG. Not amoled like the jet etc. but BIG, with good resolution, decent coulours and brightness.
4. After dabbling with android on the TP2 very briefly, I did some research and found that Android on the HD2 was probably coming withing 6 months. Case closed.... this was the deciding factor for me (coupled with the fact that I liked winmo too).
5. ANDROID! (mentioned above, but its worth mentioning twice )
Signed,
One very happy HD2 Dual-booter
I bought my HD2 about a month ago now. I bought it because of the hardware inside it. I kinda enjoy the fact that its almost as powerful as my wifes laptop!
Having been a fan of HTC for many many years, its nice to know that my phone is 4 times better than the Iphones and cost me half as much!
Ive been using wm6.5 ozrom with no problems (except not being able to connect to the internet sometimes, i believe this is more the chinese network rather than the phone!)
Pleased as punch with it and kudos to HTC showing yet again, that they rock!
I bought it because of the screen & processor(and because thanks to Radio Shack's kickass trade-in program, I was able to get it for EIGHT DOLLARS!), but the biggest reason was because the HD2 is probably the last great, REAL WinMo phone we'll see before Win7(AKA Buzz Killington) comes out & ends an era. The death of WM is gonna be a really hard pill to swallow, nigh on impossible actually, but having the last real WM phone might soften the blow a bit.
I really hope that communities like this one keep WM alive for as long as possible.
Viva LA WM!!!
WM will never die!!!!
The manufacturers may stop making devices but the community will never die!!!
Long live WM!!
just 3reason. i choose hd2 because of fast gps reciver phone, support garmin software and big screen.
I moved to Leo because my Rhodium was too slow and I took the hardest desicion of leaving real keyboard device for Leo, I am very satisfied with the performance and now more fun having Android too!
But still miss a real keyboard...

Hi, I am hoping to get an ATT Samsung focus for christmas (If not, I might just buy it) and I was wondering if any of you have made this journey from windows mobile 6.whatever to phone 7 and if you have any advice for me. I have done my research on the new os and I have been following it since it's announcement in February, so I know how the system works, but maybe you could tell me some details about the phone its self that I might not know. My particular concern is moving from HTC (Who usually makes very good devices and software features for them) to Samsung (who I know makes the really good phone screens).
Any advice at all would help me out!
I moved from the Pure to the Focus, so far. I'm loving my new device.. I have been a loyal HTC user since the Axim x51v.. The only thing that I miss is the navigation software, but I read that MS is going to update the bing maps with navigation.. also I miss the custom ringtones but again, something that is going to be fixed on the new update...
In a nutshell.. I'm in love with the samsung, the quality of the device is great, it feels well made and it's rock solid..
Also you could go to an Att store to check it out by yourself.. thats how I got a focus instead of a surround XD hehehe the focus is sexier XD
Yea i moved from a HTC touch Pro 2 to the samsung focus and I feel like its one of the best decisions I've ever made. WP7 is a great OS and the focus is a beautiful phone...You will be happy with your choice
I moved from the Touch Pro 2 (sister phone) and I love it as well. WP7 is so smooth and stable, I don't see myself going back to 6.x at all. Plus, we'll be seeing more features added by Microsoft over time so it will only get better. I'm sure WP7.1 will impress even more.
I was on the fence too, but I'm very happy with the Samsung Focus. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I made the same move and am loving it. Just a couple things...
Be ready to use only the internal 8gb storage for stability sake. The sd card update has not been totally flushed out yet. Even so, I am running an 8gb Kingston Class 4 with no problems whatsoever for over two weeks (fingers crossed). But I see that being addressed sooner rather than later. If you need copy and paste, you should wait until early 2011 when the first update is released. If you need you PIM data to sync only through outlook (think activesync) and not through the cloud, wait and see if the update will add this feature. Some people are very particular about this. Also, if you need to connect to hidden wireless networks you should wait for the first update. It may or may not be included.
If none of these issues affect you, you are going to love the upgrade. Having the zune integrated is just awesome. I don't miss the task manager from my Pure. I usually spent most of my time shutting down apps rather than switching amongst them. Jumping back to an app I came from is simple and exactly how I use my phone. The OS is extremely smooth and fast. I would flash custom roms onto my pure to get WM6.5 to run fast but would always run into bugs which would need to be fixed. The screen size increase is the biggest improvement in my opinion. Typing on the Pure was usually pretty frustrating since the virtual keyboard buttons were so small. The Focus screen size makes typing a breeze. If you are willing to embrace the cloud, you will find the user experience to even better. I think you will be very happy with the change.
The Samsung is very nice and given my generally poor experiences with HTC in the past, it was an easy jump for me, especially since there were 2 1/2 years of iPhone between the Focus and the last HTC thing I owned.
The hardware will probably be secondary to the system. WP7 is NOT WM 6.5. It's not based on WM 6.5 and it may never be on par with WM 6.5 as far as features. And, in my opinion, that's not a bad thing. WM 6.5 was slow, unstable, clunky, and completely unusable if you lost the stylus. WP7 is pretty bare bones at the moment but it's very fast, smooth, stable and very finger friendly, all of which I value more than a huge list of features I rarely, if ever, used. Before you hope too much, go to an AT&T or someone that sells them and check it out. Check out settings, the applications included with the phone, the browser and the marketplace and get an idea if there's enough there to make it useful to you. I've seen a number of threads here and elsewhere from former WM 6.5 owners who are fuming over the lack of things like ICS and RDP, completely missing the point that WP7 is not meant to be a replacement for WM 6.5. These things may come in the future but don't buy a phone for what it might one day do, buy it for what it does now.
I've had a long history with WM. I had the Imate Jam, then the HTC Kaiser, then the HTC Touch Pro 2 (aka tilt) and now the Samsung Focus.
hardware wise, this thing is awesome! I've compared the screen to the HTC Surround, and it's seriously mind blowing. The hardware is rock solid, the only little thing is that it creeks a tiny little bit at the bottom of the back cover, but you will barely notice it. Love having Gorilla Glass so no need for stupid screen protectors.
Software wise, WP7 is amazing...I'm really glad Microsoft released it, and I'm hoping that the tiny issues will be resolved with the January update (which is said to be HUGE!!!!, one developer was quoted as saying "They might as well have called it WP8", so they must be bringing a lot of changes.
The only real things I miss are Navigation, and Custom ring-tones...other than that, I'm very very very happy and I don't miss anything. The only other thing is the storage capacity, apparently Microsoft is working on a patch for the whole MicroSD issue, so if reliable storage is important, then go with another phone, but I'm going to take the risk, and worst come to worst, I'll cut down my music to make it fit, because I love this phone that much
wow, thx everyone for the info. I was already aware of the snappyness and awesomeness of Windows phone 7 but I am glad there are so many approvals of my device choice as well! I usually put in earphones for listening to music so I wouldn't really have much use for the HTC surround, and I don't need a phisical keyboard, so the LG quatrum was not for me.
I am very happy that I am not the only one making this jump to WP7.
(oh, and do you ever think that android will be ported to WP7. Is it possible?!)
PS, Can I make the windows phone 7 apps for free, or is that a 5 dollar fee?
As far as I know the tools to create applications are free but it'll cost $99 to access the marketplace, presumably for a year. Same as Apple & iPhone programs.
