No more sidekick plan with G1 - G1 General

T-mobile blocked all phones other then sidekicks to the sidekick apn.
This is so gay because now i have no internet on my G1... Great!
1st t-mobile takes forever to drop cupcake then they dont buy the htc hero still no 3g in reading pennsylvania and now no prepaid data for g1. T-mobile sucks!!!

Solution.
You need cyanogens 3.9.7 because is has vpn support
Then go here http://www.hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/ and follow the instrustions.
Make sure u keep the hiptop.t-mobile.com apn active!

how fast is it with that vpn? using 3g im guessing right? i just tried switching tothe shadow for now and cancelled the hiptop.. still not working and i might go back to hiptop

There's GOT to be a way to spoof this. I'm sure if we can read the outgoing packets from a sidekick we can find out what it is that the sidekick is sending that confirms that it's a sidekick.....
Sorry, but it can't be THAT locked down.

can somebody post the apn settings so i can set this up...ive been looking with no luck

I hope this can be worked around.
However, back when I bought mine last year, they said they were going to do this at some point. It's not fair or logical, but eh.

any updates ever coming to this thread ? im really interested in getting this working. Someone more knowledgeable than myself, please feel free to help out

Sorry for posting to an old thread but I thought I'd post an update on the topic since I read TMO shut down the use of the SideKick plan in late 2009.
I logged into my.t-mobile.com and switched my prepaid SIM over the SideKick plan to try out on my G1.
As mentioned in other threads, you'll get no love from the built in browser when using the SideKick plan. However Opera Mini seems to work. IMHO, the problem with this solution is that even with image loading turned off, it easily took a minute for m.cnn.com to load. For me, this rules out many useful services, but I guess you get what you pay for...
FWIW, my SIM is ~3 years old and was converted to pay as you go after my contract period expired. My G1 is running CyanogenMod-4.2.15.1 and is still carrier locked.

im not sure what method they use to detect your phone, but its not limited to sidekick, g1, etc. i broke my g1 a while back. while i was waiting on repair parts, i used my wifes old gravity. i logged in to my.tmobile to pay my bill. it showed my phone as the gravity. for poops and giggles, i tried my sim in an old moto clamshell styled prepaid phone. after my favs updated, i refreshed the my.tmobile page, and the ultra old moto was showing on the screen as my phone. wierd. as far as them shutting down someone's internet access, we had that problem too. i bought a g1 from a friend and put my wifes sim in it. full phone, mms, sms, etc., but no internet access. as soon as google began loading, a screen popped up in the old wap format saying her plan did not support the phone. screwed up thing is, the had something like 100mb/month internet service from her gravity phone. she could not use it until i updated hers to android service. we have edge service here and no chance of ever getting 3g, so its not like she would have ever crossed the 100mb threshold. t-mockery sucks.
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

so i read a forum today that said the reason opera mini stil works is because of the socks something or other ill find the post again and link it here, they said it even worked after the sim was expired...... dont know if this is true or not but if it is it might be worth looking into hell i have a tmobile expired sim that used to have the g1 plan on it id just use that lmao fk the system and scrw tmobile......

A possible 3G/EDGE connection fix (for previous G1/MT3G owners)

My SIM was cooked by my Nexus yesterday and had it replaced. The T-mobile guy I was talking to said that the 3G issue might be happening because I still had the G1 data plan and not the android data plan. I have no idea why this would matter. But since he changed that, and my SIM, I have had great 3G reception in places where I used to only get EDGE.
I thought I would share.
Also, if you want to test this just call up T-Mobile and ask them to switch you from the G1 data plan to the android connection. It doesn't cost a penny.
Your SIM was cooked by your nexus one.... wait, what?

No. They had the G1 data plan first but then when they came out with T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail to get it to work you had to have the plan switched to the Android plan (same price).
Also, OP, tell us how did you fry your SIM?
funny you mention that, I opened a new acct with the mob and on my bill it says 'android plan' $0.00. i asked what that was and he said it was for 3G.....

wait, what??
This the second time, My g1 did it too. Don't think melted plastic or anything like that. I have a theory that the SIM sits right on top of the processor and other components in the phone. If you haven't noticed the phone can get really hot when charge (no my phone is not broken). I think it might be my charging habits. I run the battery to about 25-30% and then let it charge all night. So, that might have something to do with it.
No worries about your cool Nexus One because I honestly think this is a HTC hardware design problem. Also, I am sure these cheap little SIMs (insert bad Sim video game pun ) aren't meant to handle much heat.

This could possibly be a registration issue on the sim due to the flapping. The older model sims generally start to fail/suffer around 90k registrations (If you reg on a tower @ 3g, then switch to 2g, then back to 3g, that's 3 registrations right there).
The original G1 plan had $25/month for data + 400 texts, and $35/month for data + unlimited texts.
The Android plan has $25/month for data only, and $35/month for unlimited texts. You lose the 400 free texts, even though it's the same cost.
As for the Android plan having $0.00, I'm assuming it's from the Even More Plus bundle.
G1 Data plan is the same as the Android data plan. There is one with 400 texts on it that is a part of a bundle basically. Basically what I'm saying is all of the android data plans will work on all of the T-Mobile phones because they are the same...I still have my G1 data plan on my line and my 3G is flawless and I don't even live in a major market (Jacksonville, FL). I work for T-Mobile and know this to be true. Granted I always put the designated plan for each phone, but I'm almost 100% positive it doesn't make a difference. The cooked sim thing sounds shady too. Your G1 didn't "cook" your sim. Just my $0.02...
Get this though. I had my G1, SIM died about a month of use, Nexus One died after one week. Now my manager has a MT3G and bought it new about 4 months ago and had the same SIM for the past 6 years, died yesterday. He had a Wing before the MT3G, but his SIM never. I also have another co-worker with a G1, but no data plan. His SIM has been fine ever since he bought his G1 off some chick.
3G sucks in the Minneapolis area. I am always connecting and reconnecting, happened with my G1 too. Not to blame you or anything. I think the connect reconnect issue here in the Mpls/St. Paul area might have something to do with the dying SIM cards.

I've had my SIM since I joined T-mobile in January of 2003. I only replaced it because the paint on one side was chipping a little and I didn't want it to clog up my phone. Special care...? Just pop it in and leave it. Nothing special needed.

I'm reposting my post in the development forum for you guys... thought you may be interested:
So I've been following this issue on Google's support website, and one of the rooted users over there is almost positive it's a software issue with 2.1. He actually flashed a port of 2.0.1. Although he got lots of FC's, obviously as 2.0.1 isn't made for the N1, he was getting excellent 3G connectivity, and constant speeds over 1500kbps!
Here's the link so you can read for yourself. The user's name is GNove.

HTC Hero unlock on ATT

Hey anyone using HTC hero unlock on ATT? Do they detect it as a smart phone and try to put their smartass data plan ($30) on you?
I just want to use an HTC hero and ATT WITHOUT a data plan. I don't want them to txt msg me and say "hey you have a smartphone and here is a $30 data plan that you didn't ask for"?
I am. I had a smartphone before they added the plan and switched to my hero over a month ago. Dont know if that has anything to do with them not sending me that message.
I take it that your online page still showing your old phone and not the HTC hero?
They have no record of the IMIE numbers. They will have no clue what phone it is.
I have been using a hero on AT&T for about 3 months with the $10 unlimited family data plan
Im not sure actually, since its my moms account and i doubt she has any clue how to access it. But yea i never told them anything about my using a different phone. And i believe twenty4 is correct about the IMEI
Thank you guys. Too bad they seems to have sniffed out the Nexus One IMEI. Do any of you guys know a cheap place to buy a NEW Hero for ATT with some sort of insurance/warranty? (I don't care about 3G, because I won't be using it)
I dont think you will be able to find a Cheap New hero with warranty or insurance. I think the only way you can do that is by buying online, which is still pretty dam expensive even though its an old phone. I got mine off craiglist
3 Smartphones 0 data plans

I got their messages late last year about forcing a data plan on my unlocked iPhone, so I was forced to sell it. I have three smartphones on my account two of which I was going to update - due to which the grandfather clause would be negated. I called and was able to make sure they annotated my account to allow any smartphones (except iPhones) on my numbers not to require a data plan, based on long customer history in good standing. YMMV.
Now running MyTouch, Hero Touch G2, and 8125 (waiting for upgrade to a GSM Droid a.k.a. Milestone) all with no data plan.
The IMEI is not pushed to the carrier from the phone. The only way they would know is if you call them up and tell them. I've been using the hero for about 3 months now on the $10 family data plan.
On a side note, are people getting dropped calls from their hero? I've been getting more dropped calls from this phone than my previous phone. Wondering if there's a different radio firmware or something that I can upgrade to to fix the problem.

@HiTach so at&t pretty much just let you use other smartphones other than the iphone? Since upgrading or switching smartphones negates the grandfather clause right?

Yes! There is an issue with certain radio versions in North America. I use the one in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581981, and have not had any dropped calls on at&t with my Hero. 3G works flawlessly.

No, as far as i know only the Telus (canada?) one is compatible with at&t 3G in the US. I dont have a data plan (and dont plan to) so i just got whatever hero i could find.

Nexus One AT&T Data Plan Question

Currently, people with a G1/Dream, Magic, Hero etc. on AT&T are able to get the $10 Family Data or $15 Unlimited Data option on their phone, because AT&T does not recognize it as a smartphone since they do not sell it (I know this is true because we have one in the house).
Can anyone tell me how AT&T recognizes the Nexus One? Does it show up as a smarphone on your online account, forcing you to use the $30 PDA Data plan? Or does it show up as "unidentified," meaning you are free to choose one of the cheaper plans?
Before I switched to T-Mobile it showed up as unidentified in the account on the web page. They must got have gotten the maker IMEI codes to the phones to figure out who's using a N1 on their network. I had the option to change it back, but I don't know if it would have reverted it or not.

clarification:
the tmo g1 will show 'unknown' or whatever, and you'll be stuck with edge. afaik the tmo nexus will be the same way.
now, the ATT nexus, i'll bet they hit you with the "OMGZ YOU HAZ SMARTZPHONE ON OUR NETWORKZ !!! PAY ME PWEEZ !" rediculousness. $30 sounds about right for them.
please, do update the thread if you find concrete. i'm only going on the bs they spouted about a 5 year old palm treo. yes, a treo supposedly burned $30 worth of data. please.
Good point, although if they don't identify one version of the Nexus, I don't see why they would the other. Hopefully someone who has the new one right now on AT&T can answer.
And while the G1 does get restricted to EDGE, if it was a Rogers Dream, it would get 3G and as far as I know AT&T would still see it as "unidentified."

That's correct. I had a Rogers HTC Magic before getting the N1 and I was on AT&T, the device was not identified but I still got 3G @ the $15 price point for data. It wasn't until I put in my SIM in the N1 to check it for defects that I got the texts and emails saying my phone was on the wrong data plan.

the IMEI includes data that identifies the phone make/model and at&t must have access to that info, lol. pop in that N1 SIM and it's just a matter of time before you're conveniently upgraded to the Smartphone data plan. there are a couple of threads on the N1 forum that provide more detail about the data plan changes.
Well that should answer my question then...if the Rogers Magic was unidentified but the Nexus One triggered it right away, then AT&T is obviously recognizing it as a smarphone and triggering the Smartphone data plan.

My experience was that AT&T knew when even the T-Mobile Nexus One was being used as my account triggered the $30 data with it as well. Currently seeking a kind AT&T rep who can add a smartphone exclusion to my account on both lines for the AT&T Nexus One's I picked up yesterday.
Logged into my ATT account and all I see for my Nexus One that operates on the ATT fequency is a gray outline of a flip phone.
So in my case it has not been recognized as Google N1.
I got my T-mobile n1 for use on AT&T on 2-18. 8 hours into ownership I got the text saying I need to upgrade my data plan, which at that point had been unlimited text/[email protected]$30 for use with my Nokia N85. That threw me into a rage, as I'd be GD'd if I was going to pay 30+ a month for edge.
On 2-22 I switched to T-Mobile.
18 hours later, came back to AT&T. Grass isn't greener on the other side.
From 2-23 until 3-18, no nasty text from AFee&Fee asking to upgrade. 3-18 and ongoing, no upgrade text sent for the 850mhz N1 (I hate calling it the "AT&T Nexus One").
I'm back on the $30 unlimted text and data plan, and i've been with it steady for one month now. YMMV, as may mine, good luck
I ordered the At&t N1 the day it was released and have been using it ever since I got it the next day. So far they haven't changed my data plan.
possibly its region based
ive had tmo band n1 and att band n1, tmo band one for about 3 weeks and now att band n1 for a week or two, no texts to update plan, yet...ive been streaming music on last fm all day long in high quality so we'll see
The grass is totally greener on the T-Mobile side in Seattle. That's all I can say.

Probably. I only had 3g in a few parts of metro Tulsa, Edge everywhere else. My mindset was if i'm gonna be stuck with edge, I might as well keep my 6k rollover minutes and m2m, since everyone I know is on AT&T. I did run a speed test after getting the 8fiddy, and here's what I got:
Please stop asking about AT&T forcing you into data plan or not. Here's why:
1. Their definition of smartphones are smartphones that they sell. If you buy unlocked phone, that shoild be fine.
2. If you've been forced to upgrade, most likely, you've used A LOT of data. When I say A LOT, I mean like a few GB worth. They will most likely flag yout account.
If you keep asking, either BGR or Engadget will write an article about this and inquire AT&T. And they will have to respond. What if DeLaga just goes: Gee, maybe we should force N1 user to upgrade, let's go hunt them all.
Just FYI, I have the AT&T N1 on AT&T family data plan for 10 and it's fine. So hush hush and keep this btw ourselves.
Question for you guys who got texts from AT&T. Did you ever tlel them you were switching to an N1? Many threads I read people going from $30 => $15 and saying they had an N1. Sometimes the rep would let them and then a few days later they get a nasty text... What should I expect with the ATT N1?

Let me clear up some of the misconceptions you seem to have from what I've experienced thus far.
1. Even with an unlocked Nexus One, AT&T can still change your plan as this is exactly what they did to me. I bought an unlocked AWS Nexus One and less than a month after popping my SIM into it, I got the message and my data plan was changed, even though I was only using EDGE.
2. AT&T knows which phone you're using. It may not seem as such with your online account showing an unknown device, but the device still registers on their network and there are ways for them to see which device it is. The CSR's and Customer "Solutions" rep didn't know what phone I was using when I called to complain about the data plan change, but the woman from AT&T's corporate response team had no problem finding out that I was using a Nexus One when she was responding to my BBB complaint.
3. The amount of data may play into all this, but I will tell you that I used over 4gb of data with my i8910 months before I had the Nexus One and didn't hear a word from AT&T.
4. You are most likely to receive the text message to change your data plan on the day your billing cycle ends, so if you haven't gotten the text yet, wait til your next bill comes before you start celebrating.
I hope that helps.
in response to both your statements i believe its both. because all the friends i know working at ATT swear up and down that its incredibly rare to get flagged. Might be almost random if anything. Doesnt meant it wont happen for either reason.

how long between putting in the SIM and getting the "convenience" texts?
I've had my N1 since the day after it was released and haven't gotten anything yet. In fact, all the phones in my sig have been on this account in the past year at some point - including the Fuze which I've had on there since the day it came out. Still on the MediaMax200.
Notes: My billing cycle starts on the 27th and I rarely go over 100MB a month.

I didnt tell them. I went from a phone they didn't sell/support (nokia n85 unlocked) to a phone they don't sell/support (N1). Didn't tell anyone, just swapped my sim out. 8 hours into ownership, at 3AM no less, the nastygram showed up via text and Gmail. Granted, the N85 is a 3g phone, but I doubt my data use was over a gig last month. I'm always under 2 gigs even on my heavy flow months. I doubt seriously that it had anything to do with data consumption.
All of their smartphones being sold must now be on an unlimited data plan, i know that much, but they didn't sell me my N1, and i'm still in contract for my iphone 3g.. breaking their terms of the contract by forcing me into an unnecessary data plan upgrade can emancipate me from it. I know they force the upgrade to try to recoup some of their subsidy for the other phones, but that doesnt apply here!
And to the poster telling us to stop asking about it-its happening to people, it's happening irregularly and without reason, and that is cause for discussion. BGR and the other tech sites can ask AT&T all they want, but a material change to the service, such as cramming (i miss that term) an unwanted/unwarranted plan upgrade, is still a contract violation and is cause for emancipation. Not that I'd jump ship now, because I just got the 850mhz N1, but it's certainly a bargaining chip to get your plan switched back relatively hassle free.

For those with GTabs going straight to Tmo's site

Just spent about four days with TMobile on the device getting connecting on their network (Even had a ticket). Finally found out that they had me on the wrong data plan. The device needs the Web Connect plan to connect. Being so new of a device, they had the wrong plan provisioned for me as I went straight to WiFi and did not check. I currently have my device subsidy unlocked to use my AT&T and added the Ad-Hoc supplicant which I thought was the cause. After several days, someone finally realized the plan was incorrect since a Tmo Blackberry Sim worked perfectly fine.
Moral of the story, have them check to see if you have the Even More webConnect Overage Free Plan for $39.99.
Same thing happened to me and I didn't discover it til yesterday... had been using wifi all along... but in my case it was because I was on a voice plan...
effing Tmo.... just about to kiss 'em goodbye. Which makes me sad because AT&T is really not an option for me... and I don't think phone calling will be enabled on VZ or Sprint.

After several days, someone finally realized the plan was incorrect since a Tmo Blackberry Sim worked perfectly fine.

we all new this, this is nothing new...
I cancelled my Tmobile account today. After I got the Tab, I went to my account online and switched it to a voice/data/txt plan, which took effect today. I quickly tested it, and It was blocked, so I called up and cancelled.
The first customer service girl said "Awww!" when I told her I was cancelling.
The second one asked if I would like to be switched to the proper web connect plan. I said no thank you, your service plans are inadequate for my needs.
They just lost my $2300/year
Asshats!
Yeah... I think I'm heading down the same path... after I discovered that the voice plan was causing me to be redirected to Tmo on 2G/3G... no flashing, nothing else ... I just figure, **** 'em.
If they want to make it this difficult to use it as a phone, when AT&T didn't go to any of the efforts Tmo has gone to to block calling plus data, it's just not worth fighting them anymore.
Sadly, this is probably the death knell for the Tab for me... unless I just resign myself to carrying two devices... or perhaps I might try the ATT and see if wifi will work okay... their 3G service is terribly spotty in my area.
If it's only going to be an internet device and not a phone, might as well go for the less than half price Archos 70...
Call me stupid i guess, but im gonna try to stick it out and see what happens. Is there any prepaid plans out there that will work with att and get 3g? I dont want to have to get a contract with them if i do have to give up on tmo.
Sent from Jt's Samsung Galaxy Tab!!
Edit: just read turckboattruck thread. Omit question about a prepaid att plan.
Lol
I don't know if it's just because you guys generally do everything bigger in USA compared to over here in the UK, but why would you even want this to be the only phone you're carrying around? It's huge, and you have to use it on loudspeaker if you're not connecting the headset.
How is it that it wouldn't be a hindrance to you guys?

It's just the fact that U.S. carriers decided to not include the phone feature that is getting us to want to do it. if it came with phone half of these discussions wouldn't even exist(obviously).
Change IMIE
Can we change IMIE on t-mobile tab to get what we want. I think we all know tmobile is blocking tab because the IMIE # is in their database.
I wanna stick to t-mobile bcoz I have 5.99 Tzones unlimited data plan. Im currently using iphone 3G.
I can use a TT Tab but then it works only on Edge. What Im looking for is a Nexus 1 like Tab which can be used for 5.99 tzones plan.

Clear the US carriers seem to think that if they don't include voice, you'll be forced to have two contracts - one for the phone and one for the Tab. The irony is that most people wouldn't even attempt to use the Tab as a phone except in a few limited situations (note, I said most, not all! ), so would've probably had two contracts anyway.
I find it very hard to believe that all 4 major US carriers came to this conclusion on their own, at the same time, which would lead me to believe there's a cartel here.

Dave
I feel sorry for our American friends.
Here in the UK, We can get iPhone on any network at very competative prices and the Galaxy Tab Standalone for £469 unlocked and use any network we choose with it, including Phone, DATA, etc..
Where in the US the networks seem to take advantage of the monopoly they have and charge rediculously high prices for equipment and services.

Sure looks that way doesn't it, not that I would buy an iPhone again. But in the case of the tab, I can't believe they actually locked down the phone capabilities.

HD2 on AT&T

Hey everyone!
First post, woo-hoo!
Anyway, I am still rocking a Motorola RAZR v3 and currently looking to upgrade. The HD2 seems to be everyone's favorite phone around here, and the flexibility looks awesome. My question is, will AT&T force me to buy a data plan? Can I turn off EDGE? (I know I can not access 3G, but wifi is fine).
Thanks!

Used to be on AT&T and they will not force you on a data plan as long as you don't tell them you are using a smartphone. Just make sure to get an unlocked HD2 and slip your RAZR SIM card into the HD2 and you should be good to go. You will only be in EDGE and not have access to 3G. Not sure if you are able to turn off EDGE. 3G you can turn off.
i just did this yesterday.. i went out and bought a cheap 15 dollar go phone
that had internet on it and just slapped my sim in it and of course no internet
so had to call them and they set me up with the 10 dollar unlimited plan
from the 25 dollar smartphone plan
the funny part was the guy kept saying do you have a blackberry i was like um no i have a fuze and this cheap samsung a197 ..he says the imei is coming back to a crackberry
so i read off the a197 imei and he got it registered ..so im thinking the hd2 shows up as a crackberry so just dont call them LOL and yes only edge works and make sure you check use only 2g network
Ok so heres the deal on this. I was to cheap to buy data plan when i had my iphone. I bought it off a buddy. so when i got my hd2 and unlocked it thru some website. i slapped my sim card into it. still did not have a data plan. it connected to edge and updated weather horray.....not so much. so now i was dreading buying a data plan.
well i went on line to check what my options were and my phone was not listed. it says i have some old ass nokia. legitly.....(i think this is becouse its a t-mobile IMEI number or sumthing) non the less i went on to the add a plan online. and it offered me the 15 dollar a month unlimited data plan for all att crappy phones!!! YESSSHHH
i was so happy.
The only complaint i have is that the US Tmobile branded HD2 the one i own, has the same freq for edge(2g) but a dif freq for 3g. sooooo if you are using this phone on att. you will never ever have 3g service, the hardware wont even support it. there are HD2s that support it but not the tmobile ones.
Best of luck. and i hope my deal with att isint a fluke, it makes sence that They dont have the IMEI. Like how they can track iphones and smartphones and rape you for cash. but they cant with a tmobile phone.
haha
I am on ATT and you can have them BLOCK DATA for you
If you own your phone outright and it is not an ATT phone, you can request them to block data(and texting if you want to). I have been using my HD2 for about a year with the data plan blocked and wifi only for data.
I recommend going into a store, I have found them to be very helpful.
its dead easy to turn off data completely, (and leave mms working)
most roms have a power widget which has a data toggle, or you just delete the apn.
For networks that use single data/mms apn's, just change the APN type to only say mms, so it only uses it for mms, and perhaps delete the username/password/apn entries so that it cant connect even if it tried, but leaving the mms settings intact.
For networks with one apn for data, one for mms, just delete the data one.
However, when you are only getting edge, the network handles it more like voice rather than data anyway, (think dialup vs broadband) so they wont mind as much that you dont have a proper smartphone plan in the same way they would if you had hsdpa clogging up their network.
I just switched to AT&T from T-mobile, Only cause i call mexico a lot, and they're the only ones to offer a decent plan for mexico. Anyways, I had an HD2, i went with the Inspire, cause it's basically the same phone just with soft keys, and a better camera, but if i'm not mistaken, everything under the hood is the same. It comes with Android, and should you ever want data, it's there.
But, I'm pretty sure you out to be able to just buy one and put your sim in it, and they'll never care right? I haven't priced them, i bought my inspire while switching over. But then you just tell it to only use 2g networks and you should be fine i would think
