Hi,
Just bought my TD2, and overall happy with it... I started testing it out and noticed that the browser cannot access any secure sites (including but not limited to: ANY webmail like Yahoo or Gmail, school login, or internet banking site).
I am a T-Mobile UK contract user (Flext). When I first turned on the phone I let it automatically configure for internet use. For general browsing that worked fine, but wouldn't let me access the sites mentioned above.
I called T-Mobile and, though they tried to be helpful, never figured out the problem. I know this is not a general T-Mobile issue because I was able to access these sites on my older phone, and I know it's not a browser issue because when connected through Wi-Fi (to my home network) it's perfectly fine.
So - if anybody has had or heard of this issue before, please help! There must be SOME setting or option that I'm missing, that prevents me from accessing secure sites!
I have the standard ROM, which includes Opera 9.5 build 16277, and Internet Explorer (of indeterminate version). Both browsers have this issue, in different ways: Internet Explorer claims the website doesn't exist:
"Cannot find 'http://mail.google.com/mail/x/?source=mobileproducts&dc=gorganic'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct."
Opera 9.5 does one better and crashes: "We're Sorry... A problem has occurred with Opera9.exe"... followed by the option to send an error report to Microsoft.
As I said before it's NOT a browser problem because when connected to my home Wi-Fi network, both browsers work fine in secure sites.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wassim
The T-Mobile auto configuration puts an entry under Proxy Servers which you need to remove (go to "Settings, All Settings, Connections, Connections, T-Mobile Internet, Manage Existing Connections, Proxy Settings" and check "connect direct to the internet"). Your problems should now go away and Opera shouldn't crash any more (you may need to soft reset before this takes effect).
Thank you Pete... I can't believe it was that simple, but it worked! Funny thing is, I could have sworn that option was checked off previously. But I did it again, and soft reboot, and now I can access any site I damn well please!
I'll let the guys at T-Mobile know in case some other poor guy has the same issue.
Cheers,
Wassim

Enough is enough.
I had the same **** with my old PDA2K and now again with the Exec... I've spent 20 hours thus far on that ****. I just hard reset my machine yesterday and now again this **** happens and I cannot fix it.
I am surfing using UMTS/GPRS.. My definitions are FINE. There's only one connection. It was always fine that way on both the pda2k and the new exec.. but it stopped working now... it could be that some program messed up this ****, but i wouldn't know which.
Trying to browse to a site.. I get PIE saying 'Locating..." then after a minute or so saying "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded blah blah blah"... But the 3GUMTS is connected just fine.. Note that MSN Messenger doesn't work as well (I think that's because it's uses the core engine the PIE uses). Strangely, using networking utilities (vx) I can ping with the machine and even get HTML pages using web addresses. So the problem is not DNS and not a connection problem.. Just probably some damn problem with the operating system not recognizing something.. The 3rd party vxutilities for networking are bypassing that **** hence why they can browse the network just fine.
Tried deleting temp internet files and cookies nada... I also tried soft reset (about 20 times).. nada.... tried deleting the connection and recreating... nada... tried searchiong the registry for my connection name after deleted to see if traces exists.. nada...
Getting tired of this ****.. only hardreset solved it last time and i'm getting sick of becoming the machine's slave rather then the machine being my slave.
Help would be grately apprecaited..... I am sure it's ****ed up registry entry or something like that... I don't have many programs isntalled on my machine as I just hard reseted yesterday and my machine is in rather clean condition except for must have apps.
Help...SOS..
Check your proxy server info (in connections).
My XDA exec just loves to grab my work proxy server and try use that for accessing the web when wifi is active.

Thanks for trying to help...
but that's not the issue.. it's wwaayy deeper than that... ( i would have found it after 20 hours of trying had it been this easy ...
No proxy whatsoever. I never used Wifi. No work setup.. only "My ISP Setup".
anybody else? I'm offering $20 by paypal for the kind soul who can help stop my frustration WITHOUT hardresetting my machine or doing drastic moves. I need a permanent solution. If I solve it before so.. I will post my fix here...
UPDATE:
It's working now, though I don't like the solution, I changed in 'Connections' to connect through 'My Work Network' although I don't actually have any work network and I'm using it the same way I used the "My ISP" connection. It may stop working again though. i'll update.. but I still don't get it why the normal My ISP which always worked stopped working.

Thanks, but I'm actually using SPB Weather
com'on someone please help me out here. i'll donate another 20 euro to this site if i find a solution... What I did yesterday (changed it so that it will use only the 'My work' profile both both internet and work worked fine.. but only for 24 hours. it now doesn't work again even after multiple softresets as well as deleting and defining the account again.. what a frustartion.
Now only that i cannot use PIE, I cannot use Terminal Server as well.. which is a bummer
Toggle flight mode on and then off.
Have ever try to remove check box of proxy in network tab? With mine it works.
proxy issue
I noticed the same thing on my wizard, I think it may be caused by an internet explorer automatic configuration script. When I manually provide the ip address and port number of the proxy server, the problem does not appear. I changed this in Internet Explorer running on my PC and in the Work connection on my phone. I have also changed the setting in Active Sync to choose the Work Network setting by default instead of automatic.
The only way I got Internet Explorer back to work was after a hard reset.
It did not happen again in the past 1,5 week. I have been restoring the same backup after each of these hardresets so I had an identical install everytime. It seems to be fine now.
I don't know how WM5 handles Active Directory policies (if it handles them at all) that may change your IE settings as well.

My wizard does the same, it will work for a week or so and try using some random proxy for no reason!
I just uncheck the proxy tick box and the wifi connection works great with internet explorer. (well usually I tear my hear out for 5 mins and then realise its the proxy!)

PIE stuck at Locating
Hi mobiler,
I hope you have found a more permanent solution to your problem. I own an MDA Pro with TMobile UK and recently bacame plagued with the same symptoms which you reported, i.e., pocket explorer and opera mobile stuck at locating and not able to browse the web. Through some helpful suggestions on this thread I managed to find a solution which you may or may not have already tried. Like most people, I use my MDA pro at home on my home wireless Wifi network, and while away at work I use its GPRS/UMTS capabilities. I had no reason to think that these two features of the MDA Pro had any interactions with each other. In fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that separate pieces of internal hardware provide these features. However, to my surprise/dismay I discovered that somehow the Wifi and GPRS/UMTS settings on the MDA pro are linked together. For example, if you setup a proxy server in the GPRS modem settings, which I recently did, without notifying you the Wifi connection also tries to use the same proxy setting. Vice versa if you setup a specific IP address and Gateway in your Wifi settings the GPRS modem connection also tries to use those settings and failing. The solution for getting back to normal internet browsing was to remove the proxy in modem connection by using its automatic settings ,and to tick the server assigned IP address for Wifi. This is a less than satisfactory solution, however, at least things are back to where they were before. I remain very puzzled at the interaction between these features and am dismayed and frustrated that there is nothing in the step by step procedures in each setting that warn you about a possible impact on the other.
I'm hoping someone can help me. I have an AT&T tilt. I've had it for a year with no problems. Yesterday I tried opening Opera 9.5 and it just hung at connecting to media net. I tried a soft reset, I've tried removing the batteries and reinstalling opera. The problem still persists. I tried leaving it alone to connect to media net, and found google had loaded about an hour later. Unfortunately the browser was still non-responsive. After taking a look at other programs, I discovered, Internet Explorer is the only app that works. Even messaging doesn't, it hangs while trying to connect to download mail. I tried leaving it alone like I did for Opera an found it "logging on" about an hour later, but it was hung. I've also tried turning on WiFi, but Opera still cannot connect.
From what I can see, it looks like there's an issue connecting up to the network, however, I can't explain why IE can do it, but everything else can't. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions for troubleshooting this one?
Thanks in advance.
hi,
try this opera fix.
http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=101958&st=430&p=749204&#entry749204
as for messager live .. good luck with that .. as far as I can see, the only solution is to do a hard reset and AVOID using the auto configurator in the email setup.
quote
" bad news for Windows live/ hotmail users is that they do not get the chance to select the network connection a windows live/hotmail account uses. On the very first part of the e-mail setup, as soon as you type in "[email protected], or [email protected]" , the account wizard completely takes over declaring that "settings found for hotmail.com". And even after you type in all your details you do not get to option to select the network connection to be used. (This is consequence of the fact that Microsoft Windows Mobile thinks it knows best how to configure microsoft based e-mail accounts for windows mobile.) The network connection that is automatically selected is called "The Internet". As you cannot select another network connection, you must edit "The Internet" connection so that it has the right settings for your particular mobile service provider. To do this"

But the strange thing is that I cannot find The Internet connection settings. So i cannot edit The Internet networking settings. Apparently, the end user is deem too stupid to know how to edit it correctly, so it's set automatically and hidden from view. Still investigating.
I have no idea what I did before this happen since I only need the service at certain places, so here goes...
I work at an airport that offers free WiFi to travelers. The WiFi is open without a key but when browsing, it redirects you to their proxy which has you click on a button that says you accept their User Agreement. Then you have full access to the Internet.
At school, the same thing. An unsecured WiFi access point, with a proxy that requires me to login with my school user id and password.
The reason I know it's the phone and not the connection, is that my Samsung Jack finds the proxy at work.
Please help,
Thanks
You never really stated what the problem was... is it not finding the proxy, or not letting you log in?
WM doesn't have proxy autoconfig script support, but Opera Mobile does. You need to type in the proxy settings yourself manually (by setting it to "Work" network). When you use the browser it should prompt you for credentials automatically.
Talk about rambling without saying anything at all...
My problem is finding the proxy server. Both IE and Opera found it. Once I get to the page, accepting the agreement and logging on worked fine. I never had to manually configure proxy settings when it did work.
I hope when I am able to get to the page I won't have that problem too.
Thanks
I figured it out. I remembered that I had installed Lookout Mobile Security and checked the Firewall settings. I disabled it and it worked.
Is a security app really necessary on a mobile?
I've never found the need for AV/Firewall software on a mobile (didn't even know firewalls for WinMo existed!)
There are very, very few WinMo viruses around and I've never got one. Then again, I've never got a Windows (PC) virus either... as long as you don't install suspicious software then you should be fine.
Hello,
Problem concerns one of the biggest polish banks (www.mbank.pl) and its internet transaction system.
Usually when you I am logging to the system it is encrypted connection (small padlock visible), and site address is http://www.mbank.com.pl - and this is standard situation.
2G/3G - Default Browser
Now when I am trying to log in using default 2.2 Nexus browser there is no small padlock visible and site address is: http://10.158.226.75/www.mbank.com.pl
I can typy in credentials but when hit LOGIN I receive information that my browser does not accept cookies (cookies are enabled).
2G/3G - Delphin Browser
Same issue as on Default Browser
WiFi - Default Browser
Everything works fine.
2G/3G - Skyfire Browser
Everything works fine.
Most suspicious from my perspective is this IP address http://10.158.226.75....its like he can not use secured connection...but only on 2G/3G?
EDIT:
Now I discovered that putting https://www.mbank.com.pl solve the issue....
What could be the reason of such behaviour?
You have just possibly fallen a victim of "phishing" - a site trying to disguise itself as another site. This is not about browser, but about the site itself.
I've tried to trace 10.158.226.75, but it's not visible - so I guess it might be a proxy of your cellular data provider. But it might be something worse.
1) Just in case, please change your password for the banking site, and never write your credentials when you see that the address is different from what you've expected.
2) Try to use trace route sites from the phone to understand, what is this IP and whom does it belong to.
If there is a padlock - you're using HTTPS, not HTTP. Always, without exceptions. You might just be automatically forwarded to HTTPS site.
[edit] Checked things a bit. The site is www.mbank.pl, not www.mbank.com.pl - and it's not secure. When pressing "Log in", you get to https://www.mbank.com.pl, and it's secure. Put attention - HTTPS, not HTTP.
And lastly, it doesn't have anything to do with browser security.
Could be a proxy provided by your network provider as it only occurs when using 3G.
Thanks Jack for the answer.
To be honest I dont think its phishing but just in case I will change the password.
I think there is something wrong with the link between http://www.mbank.pl/ and https://www.mbank.com.pl/ (link is under LOG ON button).
When I am trying to open https://www.mbank.com.pl/ using LOG ON button I open http://10.158.226.75/www.mbank.com.pl (please note it is not secured). Its like browser automatically does not accept some certificate or something.
However when I open https://www.mbank.com.pl/ directly (typing in address) it works fine and I can login to the system.
Most suspicious is that on the WiFi it works just fine....

That's the reason I supposed that it might have something to do with your cellular data provider.
Hi there,
I'm having a bit of a strange problem that I haven't found anywhere in the forum:
1)running froyo superram V 1.5.
2) 2.12.50 radio
3)energy rom dec 13 version
during install i cannot connect to my google account via 3g /hdspa / umts or whatever the data connection through my mobile phone provider is. wlan no problem.
after having done so and switching wireless lan off and only using my mobile phone data plan i can:
a) suft the web through the internet browser using mobile data connection (so i assume my apn settings are ok, [i'm with eplus, germany])
b)but i cannot ping the web in the settings dialog, nor can i use the marketplace or use any other internet using application
c) all of the above, i.e. marketplace work through wifi
what can i do? and why is this a selective issue????
any help and input is appreciated!
merry christmas from germany!!
data connection
I am having the same issue. Everything works fine except web related apps, unless i'm connected to wifi.
dear thomygunz72,
you may have misunderstood me and i don't want to get this question taken off the intendet track:
i can browse the web without wifi using my mobile data connection.
at the same time i'm on the web using mobile data, none of the other inet related apps work!
so I'm not one of the regular cases in which mobile data connection doesn't work at all, it however only works SELECTIVELY!
thats my problem.
hope anyone might be able to help!
Just wondering if you found a resolution to this issue, as i am having the same problem.
Internet app is ok, email and gmail apps are fine, however anything else just "fails to respond to server" when trying to use them, including the XDA app and facebook and twitter.
Any help to this would be greatly appreciated.
I don't see why you can access the internet but not via applications. That sounds a bit fishy to me, and I'd personally be tempted to try a different ROM and see if the problem persists.
First of all though, I would definitely check my APN settings to make sure they're correct. You should be able to find the info you need here...
http://www.unlocks.co.uk/gprs_settings.php
From the home page, bring up the menu and go to settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, access point names. Check the selected values in there against the values on the site linked above.
browser works just fine but internet applications dont
I found a few posts about my problem, but no solution whatsoever. I got and HD2 using Nexus One ROM, the thing is I use the default browser with no problems but when I try to run facebook, twitter, downloading files or google talk there's an error message saying that there was an error and I should try later or there was a timeout. I checked my APN and everything is the way it is supposed to be. I figured so since I can browse perfectly. Is there an option where I can force applications to use the APN I set up? I hope you can help me on this matter.
