Hi folkes
I've just purchased a GPS (bluetooth) receiver for my Hermes/SPVm3100 and I was wondering what good software there is out there that I can get/use to make the most of it.
I've got Google maps and Live search which both work really well finding locations with GPS but would like something else/better.
Any comments much appreciated

I would have to recommend TomTom - it's probably a predictable response, but for a reason
I've tried Navigon and really didn't like - I couldn't find an easy way to browse the map and just find the place I wanted to go to and it ran a bit slow for my taste.
TomTom is the only choice in my opinion (though, the iGO software looks quite cool too but i don't think there's any UK maps as yet

The best software are : TomTom, I-Go and Route66
Check them out and pick one that suites you the best
P.S. Don`t get me wrong but this has nothing to do with WM6, this should be in Hermes General IMHO
another vote for tomtom. i like route66 but the map size is huge, compared to tomtom

A nod towards Tomtom, i tried a couple of others forgot what, but nothing was as nice to use as tomtom. (despite its anoyances... why can't i decide how far to zoom in, why must tomtom decide it knows best a few seconds after i have set my desired zoom level... "bad tomtom!! bad!"
If you want to use your hemres for off road navigations
(walking, cycling, hiking that kinda thing)
anquet is very good. Its a digital version of the proper Ordiance survey maps, you can now buy it online for just the area you want and download the maps. I wouldn't recomend it instead of a propper map, as a flat battery could leave you stranded but as an extra its fantastic!!!!!
auto centering and tracking 1:25K maps are really nice for hiking off.
(bit pricey though.)
One vote for iGuidance Been using iGuidance for 2 years, version 2 and now i'm on v. 3. They just released v4. But i'm in the US.
my vote is for iguidance v3... just wish it had the traffic feature of tomtom6... tomtom for me lags and has made me miss a turn or 2, but its also got me out of a few traffic jams...
TOM TOM 6 DOES the job for me the maps take up some room but it works 100 percent with wm6
My vote is TomTom as well.
I tried a couple others and they looked like toys compared to TomTom
tomtom is the most used mapping app, it has the best support and features available like pois extra voices but you should be aware there is a known freezing bug on most hermes configs.
iNav v4.0 is completely compatible with WM6 on the 8525. It's been a good prog and v4 added TextToSpeech and more compressed maps. This is US version, don't know of it's Euro version status.
My vote is for iGuidance v3. I've used TomTom 6 but the Maps were really outdated here in Florida. Plus I had issues getting TomTom to pick up my OnCourse GPS. iGuidance worked flawlessly and had a friendlier user interface.
I've had no freeze issue since i went to version 6.0.30
BUT the mute issue is anoying me!
Iguidance is only available for North America mapping isn't it?
TomTom its the best, i tried igo, route66, ndrive, and TomTom, rules.....

I use Tomtom 6. Very easy to use, nice iterface. I won't say I never get a crash, but the crash is usually when turning it on or exiting - it has not let me down mid journey.

If you can afford it TomTom is very good.. but also worth a look is Smart2GO (I know its Nokia owned but there's a Windows Mobile version)
It uses more up to date maps than TomTom (IMHO), is totally free.. has free updates of any map anytime you want it (updated twice yearly).. full world coverage, maps can be downloaded either via a pc (totally free) or in sections as needed over the air (with data costs of course - but no other charges)
They make the money on addon's.. like navigation by voice which is chargeable (but it works out way way cheaper than TomTom and you can buy a year of UK voice navigation coverage for way less than a single country of TomTom maps.. then when you go on holiday just pay for a week of coverage for that country.. saving a huge amount)
I actually get on well with it and like the fact you can get free map updates whenever you need them.
www.smart2go.com and you can try out the whole lot for free. assuming you dont need voice navigation its free for life.. if you do its dirt cheap.
I am looking for a good set of Scottish/UK maps/application that is wm GPS compatible - designed for walkers/hikers. Tomtom 6 and the likes always tries to jump you onto the nearest road which is pointless if you're on a remote trail.

I'd look into MemoryMap Mike.. its all Ordenance Survey Licenced maps at varying scales.. and it works fine (is designed for..) for walking/hiking.. It works on WM devices too.. and there are a huge number of maps available as addons.. including themed packs such as hikers guides etc...
Its way more detailed than TomTom, but theres no navigation of course as its a GPS mapping solution not a navigator.
It can even do a very nice 3d view of the landscape based on the OS gradients of the maps.. its very clever stuff.

www.memory-map.co.uk the sites a bit of a mess but the mapping is top quality. Theres a few online places doing the software and maps at discount, and you often get good deals at outdoor shows apparently.
Ok, I bought a GPS on ebay, the BT-359. Now what? I need extra software on the phone to use turn by turn navigation, right? What software do you recommend? For simple "where am I," I can use the newest Google Maps or LiveSearch I assume.

Now buy a GPS Software (IGo, MioMap...), install it, and enjoy in turn by turn navigation.

I recently got a bluetooth unit myself; I have downloaded a trial version of software called GPS Tuner. It automagically downloads google maps based on your location, pretty cool.
I plan to go hiking this weekend and will try it out on some waypoint I'm going to load.
I use TomTom For Windows Mobile. Works really Well. You can buy it on their website or you can 'acquire it' else where fairly easily.
Set up the Com Ports and Away you go!. Just make sure you read the manual for Your GPS to set it up correctly.
Tomtom is tha bomb for Nav (at least in Australia it is) WM5 used to freeze up if you had too many Points of interest active however on WM6 you dont get it at all.

Why don't you just use Google Maps mobile directly? It too has GPS functinality.
You can also use free MGmaps

You can download Google tiles to your device and use them locally without data acess.
TomTom hands down.
I've used other brands of software and they all feel like a poorly designed child's toy compared to TomTom.

Overhead maps are virtually impossible to drive with. On top of that you still HAVE to have a data connection to route.

I˛m using a MioMap v3.2 with Cyberus v10 skin and i am a fully satisfied with this GPS software. I tested all GPS software, but MioMap is best for me. All world maps for all world countries exist for this GPS software.

Im looking for GPS programs/softwares that are compatiable with the X1.
I heard many like TomTom, Garmin, etcetc..
Just wondering if there are any other recommened GPS softwares that do not require any internet connectivity. (for use especially in Asia countries)

TomTom doesn't require internet connectivity. I have TT7 on my X1 and do not use any data while navagating (I have not enabled QuickGPS which would use some data though).
I find TT7 very good and prefer it to my cars inbuilt gps.
I also use run.gps uv trainer as an exercise log - again no data connection needed.
A lot of GPS software don't use data. Garmin, Tomtom.. all you have to do is pre-load what maps you need on the card and your good to go.
I have tried all of them and IMHO the best one is IGO8.

where can i get a download if it?
I really like the UI on TomTom and I've been using it in both my WinMo's. Currently v7.910 in my X1 with the latest European maps and it works like a charm.
QuickGPS is set to automatically download data only when I attach the X1 to a computer.
I am pretty convinced that other nav software like Navigon and iGO will work fine too. Stick to one of the most popular because you will be able to find much more resources on the web, POIs and such.
Are they free? Or do i have to pay for the softwares?

Some are free, some you have to pay for.

what im about to request is quite demanding...
so.. please do not take it to heart.
Can you provide(or spoonfeed) me with one thats is totally free, with all maps downloaded so that i do not need internet connectivity when i use my GPS. Best is it comes with Asia maps.
(the list Flying H4x0r gave is too confusing.. and i couldnt figure which requires interenet, and which doesnt)

There are GPS Tools for free but there is no free navigation system on the market that does real offline navigation like TomTom, Navigon etc. So, forget it.
Google maps require an internet connection right?
mobile gmaps (google mgmaps) support online and offline maps. it is a java app and similar to google maps in operation. It does not do turn by turn navigation - but its better than nothing and its free.
garmin is your best bet. There are ways to get it free, but that would be highly ILLEGAL and i dont recommend it.

hi, i got garmin mobilte installed on my x1...i dunno why, but it connects to satiellte, tells me my location n drops out instantly..how come?

Garmin has some problems on my X1i.
The backlight doesn't stay on, the phone keeps entering stand by. That's really annoying, and it doesn't happen with Tom Tom 7.
Is it just me not configuring something?

go to settings (on your garmin) -> Display -> backlight override -> tick always on
otherwise just go to your phone setting ->system -> power -> advanced -> untick the "turn of device if not used for...."
when the system goes to sleep, it cuts off the gps connection. It took me a while to figure that out. LOL

i understand that theres a chip inside the xperia that allows the detection of satellite.
Now ive been looking for a GPS application that supports USA road map.
i have download ttn7.915.9196.vga_black (tomtom7) but found out in the official site that it does not have US maps.
Does anyone else know other brand of GPS apps that supports xperia and also allow downloading(purchasing) of US maps?

Is there a cab for the Ig8 or ,as i see on the site, buy the SD card that contains the map?
I'm using TTN 6.x on my x1. i have to set it up so that first i use wvgafix3 to adjust my devices resolution, then launch ttn. i got it used of ebay for 30 bucks, and i am generally pleased with it.

So far as I know all the free software uses the internet to download the maps. You could buy gps software. Iguidance 2009 is one, garmin makes another. None of them free, of course.
If you just want your location, there are utilities that will show your lat/long, but not with a map. My NRG ROM includes one such program.
Take a look at MapDroyd.
It uses the OpenStreetMap database. You download maps you're interested in and then access them later while you're offline.

If you actually want a full fledged GPS, I have tried most of the free ones and found them to all be complex to configure, inaccurate, and with horrible user interfaces. I have tried most of the for pay ones, and consider CoPilot Live to be the best value for the money. At $30 U.S. it is one of the cheapest commercial GPS apps I have seen. I find it to be very easy to use, and the maps have been accurate everywhere I have used it in the U.S. It functions perfectly fine without internet access, but can use internet connectivity to get updated maps, search for points of interest, and in some areas it can even get traffic updates.
Oziexplorer works for me. Can download any internet map or scan your own. Doesn't need internet to run. I use it a lot in the bush where there is no phone signal.
iGO8 work pretty well on TP2, not free but if you look hard enough...

Not sure why you think that.
It needs a network connection to download the maps and to calculate the route. If you lose the conenction, it can continue to provide the route that was downloaded temporarily. But if you get off of the route, it is of no help until the network reconnects.
+1 on CoPilot Live. I use it a lot, and like the interface and turn instructions. Around New Years, they had a special offering for $19.95, which I think I learned about on XDA-Dev, and I scooped it up right away. It works with or without an internet connection. I recently used in on a ferry from Long Beach CA to Santa Catalina island, and it even knew I was on the ferry because of its route.
TomTom works without an internet connection, but is more expensive. I have it also on my TP2, along with a local map they once offered as a free trial, but they don't offer it any more, and even told me that TT7 isn't yet available in the US for the TP2, even though I downloaded it from their site.

This program is the way forward!
Basically a GPS map without the map. it provides another PC based program that downloads OpenMap - you customise what you want and to what zoom level you want and it creates the map for your storage card. This amazed me when i actually tried it.
I spent weeks hunting and trying different programs:
I purchased TomTom a year ago and i use this in the car in the UK, but a few months ago i was heading for a 2 week hol in Cuba (crazy place) and planned to drive all over the island so was desperate for an offline map knowing that there would either be no 3G connection or it would cost an arm and a leg (the former proved to be the case).
I created a map of nearly the whole of cuba at full zoom level and it came in at under 75mb. Full (offline) GPS whever i went.
So, TomTom for the car, google maps for on foot, and this badboy (now with a full offline map of London) for when i cant get a signal (ie on the underground) and i want to know which way to go when i get to the surface.
There are only 2 GPS Navigation softwares that I have tried that offer full turn-by-turn navigation without the need to connect to the internet and those are iGO8 and iGO Primo. Everything else and I mean EVERYTHING that I've tried besides the two differnet iGO programs require a data connection whether it be for AGPS or to access some kind online service the program offers such as Garmin Online.
I recommend buying iGO8 and giving that a shot. It works extremely well on both my Touch Pro2 and my HD2 without any real issue. The only downside to it is that it doesn't have working TTS.

It's cheap, and it works. It's (mostly) professional, provides with very nice navigation routes (and fast too), with some small things to desire (voice alerts before turns are not always helpful, etc).

I'm using iGO primo 2010, it connects to 3G and spend around 1~3 cents, any idea why? o.o
