i looked around to find how to root the G1, but couldnt find any mention of version CRC1. This is the latest upgrade...is there an upgraded rooted version beyond RC33? i like having the phone rooted, but i want to have all the latest software updates too.
TIA
2 choices
crayogen is based off crc1 as well as an rooted form of it also JF will have one coming out s well here r the links:
crayogen:

and the "official" rooted plus other goodies!:

Also, it doesn't matter what version you start off with, the rooting process is the same...downgrade to RC29, and go from there.

I already installed a version of "Cupcake" manually. Will I get the update automatica
A: G1 devices that have been manually updated with an early version of Android 1.5 will not receive the Android 1.5 OTA as the device already assumes it has received the software.
T-Mobile does not support manual installations and will not assume responsibility for any device problems or failures as a result.
This was taken from the tmobile forum...
what do we ave to do to get the tmobile update...
Also..if i have JF 1.5 and wan to switch to haruyko's do i need to remove jf 1.5?
tia
Well, since you're rooted you won't receive the OTA update. If you wanted the "OEM" T-mobile update, you would have to "unroot", or the better alternative (IMO) wait for the modified version of the T-Mobile update once it gets done by one of the update guys (JF, Haykuro, Dude, etc...)
If you have JF 1.5 and you want to move to another one, you don't "remove" the ROM, but just flash the other one on, it's recommended to wipe the phone before moving on to the next one.
Very basic stuff here already covered in the update threads, just an FYI.
Thanks again, pardon me for asking such noob q's but with all the activity going on its just really hard to find answers ..plus with all the bricking going on I just wanted to ask directly.
I'm sure this is somewhere on the forum but I've made a best effort searching/reading for the past hour, and am now more confused. I rooted my incredible a few weeks ago in order to get the tethering feature to work, and this was before the OTA update from VZN came along. everything works, no complaints.
Since 1) I did not get the OTA update, and 2) I eventually would like Froyo, I have a few questions:
1) Do I need the OTA update?
2) Will I need it in order to get VZN's Froyo update whenever that becomes available?
3) If so, should I wait until that announcement is made?
4) If I unroot and get the OTA, can I simply re-root in order to get the tethering feature back?
5) Would I be able re-root by following the same instructions as when I rooted the first time (unrevoked3)?
6) If I unroot/install OTA update/re-root, how do I get VZN's Froyo when it is released? I assume I would need to un-root again, and then wait for the update?
7) Am I just as well off unrooting/installing OTA update/re-rooting and getting an unofficial version of Froyo? I am in no rush for froyo and do not want to risk messing up the phone for it.
I assume some of these questions are answered on the forums but like I said, the instructions I found on various threads seemed incomplete. Would greatly appreciate answers/links to answers for any of the questions.
Thanks
if your happy with the way the your phone is right now than just wait till the official update comes out.
You'll likely be told the update is available on your phone, but if you want root, you won't want to apply that right away.
Hopefully some magic like Evo update is done for us... the Evo update has already been rooted and pulled apart.
Thanks binny and k_flan... So I'll just wait for VZN. Can I install the VZN update (Froyo) directly or would I have to un-root first? No way to know this I suppose, but will the VZN Froyo allow wireless tether or will I have to pay extra for the feature?
My plan
My plan at this point is to wait for the OTA and then for unrEVOked to see if they can root it. If they can, I will RUU back to a stock rom, and apply the official update. This will guarantee [1] VZW to handle if I brick, and [2] that I am running the real radio and the real 2.2 (instead of the buggy beta which is making the rounds).
If they can't then the decision gets harder. I suspect that my desire for the 2.2 will outweigh my need to still be rooted.
What I know i WONT do is jump through these hoops just to install a beta radio/OS combo. If the radio wasn't at issue, it would be a different story.
np OP. You won't want to install the VZW update, it will likely not work with unrevoked's reflash tool.
I also have to correct what I said earlier, it doesn't appear it is the final build that was rooted for the Evo, but the radio was pulled from the final build and used with a rom.... Either way, it seems they've got the official radio (at least, that's how it looks for now), hopefully that happens for us, and official radio img.
Fair enough. still getting up to speed on terminology.... i assume reflash means un-root - is there any way to reset the phone to be able to get the VZ update/froyo?
I just recently picked up a dell streak. It's brand new with what I'm guessing it the latest shipped rom which is build number 15274 running android version 2.2.2
All I see is custom roms and reflashing back to other roms to root....blah blah blah...is there a way to just root my current rom and not have to flash a completely new one? I'm all for supporting the community, I'd just like to keep this as device as clean as possible and remove all the bloatware.

Download SuperOneClick v1.5.5 and root away. Dont forget to put your phone into USB debugging mode before rooting, its very important that you do that. Or just follow the steps in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925853 good luck.
Wow thanks, I totally skipped over that post!!! I guess from what I was reading I was expecting the whole process to be a lot more complicated.
Thanks a ton!
Anytime.

How come Dell don't push out the 2.2.2 version OTA to their customers?
I check for updates every day, but have just once received any. (2.2)
Their way of saying; "we just don't give a f*ck about our customers"?
You should have gotten that update weeks ago. It's been OTA for probably about a month now. And I don't know how much you've read, but a lot of what happened with not updating from 1.6 was probably AT&T's fault because they wouldn't okay the build (speculated). Dell had the source up for 2.2 for a long time, if I remember correctly.
I'm on unlocked stock EU ROM since day one. Just to clarify.
Do you mean the 2.2.2 was shipped OTA, for EU users too?
Ohhh. Didn't notice you were on EU. I don't know if Dell released one for EU yet (probably hasn't since you don't have the option to OTA). Just remember that it's not just the phone maker responsible for updates, the carrier has some say in it, too. Are you still on 1.6? Because you could always try out DJ Steve's ROM if you wanted to try something different.
No, the one OTA update I received, was the 1.6 --> 2.2 on last October.
Since then - nothing. I guess it's only in America people get the 2.2.2.
Thanx for taking time to reply.
No problem, haha. I hope you get it soon
I really want the update to, I'm in the Uk and I'm still on 2.2, I would do it myself but its just to complicated and don't wanna mess up my phone. Has anyone in the Uk got the 2.2.2 upgrade? And to be honest I really wont the 2.3 upgrade, but seeing as we still don't have the 2.2.2 upgrade, I think we'll be waiting a long time :'(
2.2.2?
If someone updated from 1.6, to the "non official" 2.2, is there any difference between it and 2.2.2?
2.2.2 is supposedly immune to the malware loaded from the 50 or so infested apps that Google removed recently from the market.
Ok
I have spent about an hour searching the threads and am still not sure what to do.
I am running a 32gig unit with build number 4.010.02_com_gen1
I originally rooted then installed cwm. I upgraded with a ROM of the 3.1 upgrade (how I got to 4.010.02..)
I am now getting prompted for an update to 4.010.10 that is 47.69meg
Based on what I am reading, I will either be FINE or the update will fail because I am rooted.
Can anyone tell me the correct process to get up to date. I dont have an issue with loading a custom STOCK rom if there is one one there that will get me to 4.010.10 or even 4.010.13 (?)
Also this is a US version (or at least if was before my custom upgrade to 3.1)
Will I be able to roll back to a cw backup if this goes bad? If that is doable, I am not worried about doing the update and seeing what happens. The tab world seems just a little less safe than the rooted EVO world...or is it just that the thought of a bricked tab scares me more
Thanks for the help
i reverted my desire z back to stock 1.34 for a warantee return the other day (which was a waste of time as they didnt repair it blaming liquid damage despite the phone never having been any wetter than being in my pocket in the rain) so once it was downgraded i thought id better do the ota update it was offering me as it may look dodgy otherwise for sending it in (currently its at 1.72.405.2, android 2.2.1)
now that i have it back and am going to have to do the repair myself i have to root and s-off it again however the guide only says from a gingerbread rom (2.3.x) as im on a new machine at the mo i setup adb and such and got to testing the msm_rotator bit before realising that i may well be doing something dangerous by doing it on 2.2.1, so after all that my question is this, there is a new ota update being offered to me by the phone, i assume the gingerbread update however i was concerned that the latest may somehow block the downgrade and just wanted to check with someone here if its either ok to proceed with fre3vo on 2.2.1 or if updating to the latest version is ok and ill still be able to downgrade
here is a guide to downgrade from 1.72 to 1.34:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
i didn´t use that... so i guess it works, but i don´t know
i used this guide to downgrade from gingerbread:

for perm root use the wiki
thanks im pretty sure thats the one i was after
