Hi
I am having trouble accessing online content using my HTC magic on 3UK. It is a vodaphone 32B, rooted, custom rom, soon to update to JacHero 2.7.3.
Does anyone know if there are any special settings I have to put into the phone to get it functioning on 3? Do I have to set up access points especially?
You have to set up your APN settings to be able to use 3G

I bought a Dopod 838pro (unlocked) and put my Telstra 3G SIM into it. I followed the Dopod Aust website instructions re ROM (already up to date), adding Telstra specific settings and with a bit of fiddling (and some calls to Telstra), most of the functionality works eg MMS, HSPDA, etc.
But...
there are some Telstra Mobile tools I want to use eg access to reporting on my Data Usage and access to location services on Whereis Mobile, movies etc. These appear to be accessible via a Telstra WAP-style site. I can get to the site in the IE browser, can use some functions but some don't seem to recognise me as a Telstra customer. eg Data Usage Snapshot (under My Account) "Forbidden - Your client is not allowed to access the requested object".
I've tried using the i-mate JASJAM 1.31.305.103 ExtROM - Telstra Australia Specific (English) from the Hermes Extended ROMs XDA Developers site. From the zip file I've installed a few of the Telstra specific looking cabs and this has put onto my device some of the Telstra apps including the Proxy Manager (and the Today theme I don't want ). But, still either haven't found the correct cab file I need to fix the other things or there is some trick I haven't found yet.
Any ideas? Anyone succeeding with a Telstra Next G SIM using all these functions in a non-Telstra device?
Thanks,
Al

i am using a Dopod 838 Pro with NextG SIM but the apps your talking about there is some embedded files on the actual ROM... have you tried Flashing the ROM and testing it?? you can cook your own ROM using the HERMES_ROM_KITCHEN in the wiki...
ill do some searching into what dll's are used and report back soon...
oh dear, sounds way beyond me.
I notice you're using Vodafone. Are you able to get current location data in WhereIs mobile when you get a map? Mobile site is http://wap.whereis.com.au/dsb/wm-telstra-wap/home/getAMap.do.

i use both NextG(Work) and Vodafone.... will try that site tomorrow...
Hello -
I just bought an unused t-mobile HTC Hero.
I unlocked it for use on vodaphone.
Everything works fine except that I cannot use the mobile network - although it is apparently enabled in the phone, any attempt to access internet etc fails, saying "this application requires network access".
NB: access is fine using wi-fi.
Support at vodafone suggested a rom upgrade. ROM Download refused by HTC website (upgrade n/a for my phone's S/N, it said)
are the two issues related and how should I resolve them???
S/N (HT98SL903000)
build number: 1.76.110.6146733 CL47212 release keys.
many thanks,
alex
Have you checked the APN settings?
Regards,
Dave
Search for the vodafone ROM on the XDA-DEV Hero Wiki. Or google...
Or, just check youve got vodafones APN settings and not t-mobiles (like foxmeister said)

Thanks for that.
I will follow all of the suggestions.
One point though _ If it needs rom as well as correction of APN - is it worth considering a custom rom instead of getting tangled with vodafone?

Vodafone don't carry the Hero, so there is no Vodafone specific ROM for the Hero.
You've got a T-Mobile branded device with a 1.76 build on it, so my advice would be a MoDaCo ROM, or if you don't want a custom ROM, a generic HTC ROM. If you upgrade to the latest T-Mobile ROM, you'll end up with the "perfect" SPL meaning you'd have to downgrade via a goldcard before you could replace the ROM with something non-T-Mobile.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks again.
I now have internet access having sorted the APN. Much happier now (I got anxious cos the phone I bought in a box from another phone -- bearing the wrong serial number, IMEI etc )
but I'm attracted to the ROM change.
Is there a particular MoDaCo ROm that i should go for that wil allow the usual apps to be run alongside some level of compatibility with outlook and MS word etc?
cheers,
Alex

Well, head to http://hero.modaco.com and have a look. There will be a full version (3.1 IIRC) available free, and a beta of the next one (3.2beta5 IIRC) for paid members.
Try the free one, and if you like it, you might like to donate to Paul to keep him going. Also, that will get you access to his 'kitchen' to make your own custom ROM from the modaco base, but adding and removing things you don't want etc.
But there's really only 1 modaco custom rom (aka MCR), just make sure you get the right one (GSM/CDMA) so GSM for you I reckon.
Hi,
I have the G2 Touch hero on t-mobile. It has been unlocked. It currently shows as ROM version 2.73.405.5, Android 1.5.
I want to start using on 3 Network, I have their internet / phone / text package.
I'm very new to this, so please can someone help me and point me in the right direction, as I would like to know the following;
1. How do I upgrade to android 2.1.
2. How do I get the 3 portal stuff to be on the phone when I switch on each time, as I would if it was a 3 phone. In other words switch on as on 3, not t-mobile.
Many thanks for your help.
Use BTDAGs guide linked in my signature to find out how to install custom ROMs.
As yet there are no 3 customised 2.1 ROMs.
You can get the 3UK customised 1.5 ROM in update.zip format from here...
MoDaCo'S Stock ROMs + radios in update.zip format for GSM Hero
Or just use any custom 2.1 ROM and search "3 uk skype apk" and "3 uk MSN apk" for those two apps,... not sure if there are others you may want/need?
Hi ddotpatel,
If I don't use a custom rom, because I find it difficult to do, can I just get an "official" 2.1 upgrade for the phone via t-mobile or 3 network. Which would I need, as its a t-mobile phone, with a 3 sim?
Thank you,

Now Im not 100% on this.. but would the t-mobile phone not tell the update server it needs the t-mobile update regardless of the sim thats in it?
.. for example.. Ive got an unbranded hero.. with an orange sim.. but I got the unbranded update pushed through to me.

Indeed that sounds about right to me,....
There are no UK branded TMobile or 3UK 2.1 ROMs yet, they always take longer to be released. If you dont want to use custom ROMs, and are happy to NOT have root access, you can run the official RUU .exe filefor 3UK from [ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM + Radio Links . This will install android 1.5 (3UK customised) and have your phone set up for updates.
WARNING,.... You might not be able to use custom ROMs ever again once updated to official 2.1.
Hi there! Can somebody help me with this problem? I had bought my phone in Orange Sk- it was branded, but it was 2.1, after some time I catched up official update to 2.2, but from T-mobile, so I downloaded it from Hungarian webpage (Slovak T-mobile did't released yet), installed one patch and finnaly Android 2.2. It was locked, so I unlocked it. I can make phonecalls, send SMS, but for some reason I cannot use my mobile network for net accessing. I'd checked every setting but nothing works. My phone is not rooted and I don't wanna root it, is there any chance to make this up?
Thanks.

menu -> settings -> network -> mobile networks -> enable data
You may need to recreate some apn settings on your device, Google the network your on and follow steps to recreate it.
sent from t'internet
Hi, I had unrooted my i9505 and updated to kitkat (02 version). I am actually on the Tesco network and I thought that is what Tesco used. The rom seems fine, along with the network in general but I cannot use any mobile data networks. Does anyone know if this is because of the wrong rom or could this be a different error?
I have searched the forum and internet for a few hours but found nothing related to Tesco GS4 roms! : I used the 02 4.3 one from here and then update via keys to 4.4.2 -

Thanks!
Tesco and o2 share the same network, but they probably have different access point settings. if you go to the tescomobile website or call support they should be able to send you some settings to ensure you have the right APN?
Are you connected to TESCO (it says TESCO in the carrier label when you pull down notifications?) Just also check that in "settings/more networks/mobile networks/access point names" that it relates to tesco and not to o2?

Started to work through these settings, forgot to try the APN. In a little bit of a pickle at the moment as I tried to flash an unbranded rom via odin and now cant boot the phone..Need to fix with kies it says but its not appearing. Think the APN was the problem when the phone (hopefully) starts working again.
Thanks!
Fingers Crossed. You should be able to use the unbranded ROM though. The only difference should be the preinstalled apps and maybe some backgrounds/branding on the boot logo etc?
