can we get the source code for the HTC widgets and make them work for the normal android UI without rosie??
No. I'm pretty sure that the source code for anything is not included in the final product.

No the HTC framework (which they are dependant on) is closed source.
HTC hasn't released source code for anything so far, so I highly doubt we will see source for Hero. They are perfectly within their rights to do this too, except for the stuff they've done to the Linux kernel (cough Rogers Dream cough).
is their a way to make the source code available for the users? as in i buy the phone then do something to give you guys the source codes?

You won't have the source code, only the compiled binaries on the device. Of course we'd appreciate a dump of those too

Just figured I'd chime in. A review of the Hero (mobilecrunch I think) said that even the widgets on the real Hero hardware ran slow. I have a feeling it's just poor optimization on HTC's part but I could be wrong.

wow.... I'm still laughing as I write this.... Be careful though, we don't want to start the Revolutionary war II.
I'm not scared. They have the kernel we need, they get all the fancy "shmancy" phones before we do. They won't share it and I'm pretty sure I know why so if they can't take a little poke then I suppose they should "bugger off!"

uhh... i'm a bit confused about the whole kernel thing regarding the hero.
i know that htc released the source code for the kernel... but i'm assuming that was the 2.6.27 right?
so i know that android 2.1 uses .29 to work, so how did the GSM hero people get that kernel and why don't we have a working .29 kernel for our phones?
please clarify?

I would like to try to put together a custom kernel for my Hero. But I am having trouble locating the .29 source. I synced up with http://android.git.kernel.org/kernel/common but that is the .27 branch. And most of the other stuff looks to be .27 as well. Is the only place to get the .29 source from the GSM hero? Thanks for any help.

I believe that is the only place to get the source. HTC hasn't released the cdma source yet. Is that our issue? Isn't it possible to use the gsm source?
found something helpful out
so when i run 'make menuconfig' front eh root directory of the HTC released .27 Hero source, under system type "Qualcomm MSM" is the system type. So when browsing through the link that I posted to the kernel git repo I found that there is a MSM branch, and it looks like it have some references to .29 and later kernel verions. Ill explore further and let you guys know.
imagine has been put off until the official sprint n1 is released.

I can't do it without source code so it'll probably be a month or so after Google's official announcement
The phone itself should have no problem running it in theory, however, the whole experience might (probably will) suck due to the lesser hardware in the Wildfire.
That is unless Google tweaked & performance tuned it and all its new features so that it does not require anything more powerful that the 2.2 does.

Most official Wildfires still haven't got 2.2 yet so most like custom mods will be our only source for 2.3. I haven't seen much that is interesting in 2.3. As far as I can see it is going to bring updates that make android more tablet friendly.

Oh, disregard what I said about it then. On a phone as limited as the Eris the only way to make it truly fast is to do it from source.

That is correct, but strangely all the backlighting of the buttons etc worked out of the box, buttons it is easy to fix if you want.
Just a little test for fun nothing else, also saw that there was support for mdpi so theoretically it could be working on Hero with some manual intervention.

Yes, it is foolish to ask for a ROM that's meant to run on tablets to be made for phones. But I never have never said and never will say no to a new ROM...
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
Yes it's going to run like ass and our screens won't do any good either.
But... as always, I'm eager to see what crazy stuff the ROM-people come up with.
but the sdk version includes some feature of switching from tablet to mobile mode by simply changing resolution... they won't have included it if it wasn't meant to be run on mobiles, and in 3.1, mobile (2.x) and tablet (3.0) development lines shall be joined (says wikipedia lol). moreover, lots of people out here said it would be impossible to run 2.2 and 2.3 on hero, and right now i'm looking at my rooted android 2.3 hero which is incredibly smooth and stable (way better than with stock os). so why shouldn't it be possible? ele just said even backlight of the buttons worked out of the box, which was not case in 2.x. i'm still believing in our developers (although i can't code well enough to support them ) and i'm sure they'll do some magic
greets, Summoner
Do you really use wikipedia for truths? Anyone can add to Wiki?!
no i don't... i just think it sounds possible... otherwise, there would be two future development lines which the consequence would be that there were VERY different features depending where more / the better devs work on lol^^
i didn't claim it was the absolute truth, otherwise i wouldn't have explicitly said it came from wiki ...
