Looking for a 16GB microSD for the Hero.
Anyone sourced a class 4 or 6? or indeed, have you used a class 2 and happy with it?
many thanks all
I have a class 2 16gb in my G1.
Apps2SD and Swap runs fine (Using JacHeroSki Hero rom).
I don't see what the class thing is all about, applications run as speedy as if they were installed on the device itself.
http://www.lowpricememory.co.uk/Sandisk-16gb-micro-sd-memory-card.html
Only used the 2GB card Orange bundle with the phone, and am experiencing a bit of sluggish perfromance on the home screen occasionally - someones said that this is solved by a faster card but will have to wait and see - got one on order.
That link you have posted says 'Class 2' in the write up but the picture is 'Class 4'.
I looked at that earlier and that discrepancy put me off ordering it.
Heres a class 6 16 GB....

Thanks for the HU.

Yes it would. WE HAVE A WINNER, 1 class 6 16gb.
These are still quite expensive though, I'd be tempted just to stick with an 8gb class 6 (which I got for £11 GBP) and when I run out of space, then move up to the 16gb
They will not ship to the UK (unless it's a copy of WoW you are after!)

yeah 16 GB too expensive for now for me, got an class 6 8GB card at £14 on order, as soon as the 16 GB cards are cheap enough I'll grab one, I can wait.
After much googling, I decided to get a class 2 from here:
http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/ph...ANDISK-MICROSD-16GB-CARD#handsetDetailsHeader
It seemed the transfer rate was not that key on our devices, as class 6 was well above what the phone could manage.
It could all be nonsense and I end up getting another in a few weeks

It supports the SDHC standard, so up to 32GB. Anything above that will require the upcoming SDXC standard.

Hi, I just wanted to ask a question regarding microSDHC cards:
Does the class of the card make that much of a difference (in terms of smoothness of video playback) ?
I'm not too bothered about write spead.
The reason I ask, is because I can't really find anywhere (I don't use ebay) in the uk (online) that's selling reputable 16gb class 6 microSDHC cards (that are in stock). Will class 2 really be a step down ?

Class does matter in speeds. So I would say yes, but you won't notice it.
I got a 16GB Micro SD-C class 6 and a 4 gb class 3/4 and video playback on my Touch HD is the same....

No, absolutely no difference at all.
The only time the class will make a significant difference is if you take the card out of the phone and connect it to your PC's USB port using an adaptor. A high-speed card connected like that can be written to a lot faster than it can while it's in the phone. But otherwise you're limited to the speed the phone can access the card at - which is a lot slower.
It's also worth saying that a class 2 card made by one of the better manufacturers (Sandisk, for example) may well be faster than a generic class 4 or even class 6 card - class 2 means it's guaranteed that you can write to it at 2MB/s or faster, but the ratings of cards from good manufacturers tend to be very conservative.
As for video, the bit-rate of a video file is not that high. My Touch Pro 2 maxes out at about 750 kilobits per second on an .mp4. The read-speed of even the worst class 2 card will be at least 2 megabytes per second - which is more than 20 times as fast. The Leo will probably be able to cope with higher bit-rates than the TP2, but certainly not 20 times as high.
That's just what I was hoping to hear
Thanks!

Just in case anyone else is searching for a 16gb card, I've managed to find a class 2 for £36.99 from memorycardzoo. On the other hand, Dabs are currently waiting for stock of some 16gb class 6 cards, which they'll be selling for arounf £50. Don't HTC have an online store in UK? Here they have Transcend 16GB Class 6 cards in stock, although they usually charge more than anyone else for what they sell.
I personally prefer to have the fastest cards available simply because it pays off when you transfrer large amounts of data (music, video) via a card reader. Also, my older cards go to my digital camera where it is important.

its just a faster card. ie, when i plug my phone to my headunit it reads the memory card almost instantly(6gb of music) where as the class 2 takes a bit to read. its also faster when transferring files to/from the card.

Why would he sell his kidney for a memory card that doesn't work with his phone?
I ordered the Samsung Focus with Amazon Wireless for one penny and a two year contract with AT&T! Couldn't be any happier with that.
Anyway, I ordered a case:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00495YF8A/ref=oss_product
And a screen protector (I know it's tough to scratch but eh, why not. Lol)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F8C1GK/ref=oss_product
So I've been thinking about how much memory is on the phone. 8GB is nice but I will want to put a few of my 720P movies onto the Focus. I figured I could get 8B Micro SDHC (Class 10) and it would make it, 16GB. That's pretty decent, right? I think it will hold me over... Lol.
I did some research and I get the higher the class, the higher the write speeds. Right?
Well, what do ya'll think of this one?

8gb is good enough for me....for now! Ill be buying a 16gb card soon enough tho because everytime you change the sd card you have to do a full reset on your phone, so id rather just do it now and get it all over with. So, what im trying to tell you is just get yourself a 16gb card if you going to be adding 720p movies...that way you wont really need to worry about changing the card later. As for the class...class 10 is unnecessary....class 2 has been proven to be VERY sufficient in the focus...even class 4. I had a class 6 and now I have a class 2 and there is NO difference in performance on my focus. Anyways, as for sd cards, be careful because some aren't working properly....I would say your safest bet is buying Sandisk...since thats what Samsung is using in the focus for memory right now.
Hope this helps!

Well, if I put a 720P movie on there, I'll just delete it once I'm finished watching it. Not going to have more than a few gigs of music too. So 8GB is good for me. Obviously once you put a movie on there you can delete it and get your memory back, correct? Sounds nooby but just double checkin... Lol. The higher the class the faster it gets on the card, right?

correct...once you delete things you get your space back. I didn't notice much difference in transfer speed between my class 6 and class 2. So if you can, just save yourself the money and get class 4. There was an article I read somewhere that a higher class can actually make performance worse on the phone. Don't know how true it is, but class 2 has been perfect for me. No difference anywhere.
You need too spend some time reading this thread before buying a microsd card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834144&page=3
Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.

A higher speed class can actually work against you because sometimes the maker sacrifices random operations for speed.
You can either wait for official "windows phone 7 certified" cards or take your chances. Read the first post carefully, especially the most recent posts. I personally have been using a 16gb Samsung card with no problems. Caveat emptor.

If you read the feedback, nothing but positive reviews.
"Pros: Very good price to performance ratio. Works with the Samsung Focus. Good read write speeds.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Not sure why some say negatives about the speed of the card. Maybe they got a bad one, but this tested out at just under 4.5gb write speeds. I had been using a Sandisk class 2 card with my Samsung Focus, but it would do some random rebooting and crashing. With this card it has been absoulutly perfect for over a week of use. I have 15gb of music and photos on the phone so I know that I am using the memory card along with the 8gb that is onboard with the phone."
Kinda sold on this... Should I do it?!?!?!?! Buy it right now?!?!! lol
This is pretty much what I was asking in another thread. I want to go with a 32GB card as I don't want to go through hard reset if I ever need more memory later on.

No lie, you're going to spend a lot of $ and 32GB is overkill.

After reading the large thread on compatible cards above, it seems the real test is if you've loaded over 8GB of data onto the SDHC card (or over 16GB total in your case) and don't experience any problems. If that's the case then that's awesome (and it also sadly verifies the fact that no one knows which brand of card really works than the Sandisk 8GB Class 2, which is mentioned in the official instruction manual).
To the OP, I've stuck with the 8GB Sandisk. I considered the OEM version for $12 USD available on Amazon but decided against it, and went with the retail packaged version, which I got at Radio Shack for $20 USD. 14 or so GB will be good enough until the official certified ones are announced.
well ill just refer to him as mr arse... but mr arse is partially correct.... mine was stable up to 15gb then after that it went downhill fast.... so give the dude a bit of a break....
Has anyone seen any OFFICIAL announcement that there will be APPROVED cards for WP7. I know that Sandisk tried to pull a fast one and say their's were approved but then pulled them. Is MS even allowing such a program?
Ok, so I know this is a topic that has been really over-discussed, but I really can't seem to find very much good information online, so I turn to my most trusted authority...XDA with a few questions...
I currently have what I believe is a genuine Sandisk 16 GB Class 2 microSD card. And from reading in the forum - I realized when I upgraded (in the meantime I reverted back...) to CM 7.0.3 I had serious lag issues, and I understood from different posts that it was because I needed to upgrade the class of my SD card. In the interim, I've purchased a Sensation 4G (which I have yet to receive - but expect to have by Wednesday). I know this phone comes with an 8GB card - I'm just not sure of the class - but assuming that the phone records HD video - they should have the sense (no pun intended) to provide at least a class 4 SD card right?
Here's the thing. It's really hard to understand - even from reputable stores, which SD cards are real and which are fake.
General questions:
1) Why do some cards have their class marked on them and some don't? What does this mean?
2) There is no standard look to SD cards even from the same company. How can I know where to buy a real one?
I already got burned by eBay - so I'm not going down that route again - but even NewEgg and Amazon (where I bought this card from and am happy with...even though I'm no longer sure it's even real. I downloaded an app that's supposed to test read/write speed and authenticity - and it didn't say Sandisk, so now I don't know...Despite being a class 2 card with write speeds of higher than 6 MB... so I really am confused. I'm assuming a fake card would cheap out on quality...)
While I always prefer to pay a bit more for the best - and from what I can see there is no consensus regarding any SD cards besides Sandisk/Toshiba/Samsung, however - there are no SD cards from any of these brands to be found online for purchase with a class higher than 4 - besides class 10 that costs somewhere in the vicinity of $100 (which I am currently unwilling to pay).
1) Is there no Sandisk Class 6 or 8 card?
2) Why can't I find them anywhere if so?
3) What is known about companies such as Kingston/PNY/Lexar/Transcend - what I've seemed to find is that the good reviews are great - but the bad ones are REALLY BAD. Do I want to chance getting a lemon and losing something as precious as photographs??
4) What about reputable companies that aren't necessarily known for their memory/SD card strengths but other areas - Duracell, HP, Panasonic, Nokia?
5) Would I be better off downgrading to a smaller card with a higher class? (i.e. 8GB Class 10?)
I'm really confused - any and all help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!!

It's not so much the "class" of the card, but the real-world performance of the card. I've seen class 4 cards preform better than some class 6 and higher cards.

General questions:
1) Why do some cards have their class marked on them and some don't? What does this mean?

None of the manufacturers are consistent with their markings.

2) There is no standard look to SD cards even from the same company. How can I know where to buy a real one?

There is no way to tell a fake one from a real one by just looking at it. to be safe, buy one from a brick-and-mortar store, where it is easily returnable. Don't buy it online unless it is from a well established retailer like Newegg.

While I always prefer to pay a bit more for the best - and from what I can see there is no consensus regarding any SD cards besides Sandisk/Toshiba/Samsung, [snip]

Why makes you think those brands are the best??

1) Is there no Sandisk Class 6 or 8 card?
2) Why can't I find them anywhere if so?

1) Not sure, but I'm sure if there is, it would be listed on their website, or one of their CS reps would know...
2) Call the company (or look on their website) to find out...

3) What is known about companies such as Kingston/PNY/Lexar/Transcend - what I've seemed to find is that the good reviews are great - but the bad ones are REALLY BAD. Do I want to chance getting a lemon and losing something as precious as photographs??

I personally would group all four of those companies you mentioned in with SanDisk at the same quality level, but that's just me...

4) What about reputable companies that aren't necessarily known for their memory/SD card strengths but other areas - Duracell, HP, Panasonic, Nokia?

As you said, they don't specialize in flash memory, so chances are their products would not be as bleeding edge as SanDisk/Kingston/PNY/Lexar/Transcend.

5) Would I be better off downgrading to a smaller card with a higher class? (i.e. 8GB Class 10?)

It depends!
I have been using a 16GB Transcend Class 6 card, for the past two years or so, and have had zero issues with it.
I also have a 16 GB SanDisk Class 2 card (although I don't use it in my Nexus One), and again, I have had zero issues with it.
I certainly would not put any faith in reviews on Amazon, etc. If anything, I would look at a reputable tech review site like tomshardware.com or anand-tech.com. Otherwise, buy and try, and if you are not happy, return it.
Wow! Major thanks for that reply! Was very helpful!
transcend class 6 is a great card. sandisk are also great.
+1 on the A-Data 16gb Class 6--great for a year now
Have read GOOD reviews on a Lexar 32gb Class 10
Probably my next card
Here is a nice chart showing speeds of various classes/cards

I have a SanDisk 32GB Class 2 card that I've been using for about 6 months. It's performing almost as well as the SanDisk 32GB Class 4 card listed in the CyanogenMod SD Card performance wiki table. Using the same testing protocol, I'm getting 5.67MB/sec writes and 11.28MB/sec reads.
Wintec 16 gb class 10 from Fry's. It performs like a class 8.5, not bad!
I bought a 11 euro 8gb micro SD class 6 with A2E in CyanogenMod 7 and runs like a charm .

use code MLC720EN
( limited use )
final price of 23.95 seems good for this card.
I might just have to grab one of these

This does look like a good deal, this might replace my class 10 16gb
Seems like a good deal. I'd get one if I had a device that had a sd card slot.
Damn I just paid that for a Sammy 16 GB class 10 three or four months ago!
For those looking at this, I highly suggest you look at their ResellerRatings profile - quite bad. Stay away...
