Hello guys. New to the forum here. I currently have been using an unlocked jailbroken iphone for the last 2 years. I have a contract with TMobile USA and will not be changing carriers. I pretty much get the sweetest deal possible (unlimited calling $49 per month).
Tmobile will be getting the Magic as a mytouch 3g in another month. However, once i saw the UI for the Hero i became a huge fan of that device. I am trying to decide between keeping iphone, getting mytouch 3g, or buying an unlocked Hero from Europe. Here are my thought on each and i want to see others opinions.
1. Keeping Iphone- I am so bored with this phone. I have unlocked it and did everything that can be done to try to keep it interesting but i think it may be time to get rid of it. I do use it for an ipod everyday and its great for this. Has a weak camera but has 3.5mm headphone jack. Can only get Edge signal with tmobile in the usa.
2. Mytouch 3g- has android. But not the slick UI of the hero. Has a weaker camera than hero and no headphone jack without adapter. However, would have 3g speeds.
3. Hero- would cost the most by far. Price about 600-700 usd vs 199 for mytouch due to carrier subsidy. Would not get 3g signal on tmobile usa. But that android combined with Rosie UI is very appealing. Plus it has a 5 megapixel camera.
I would think of waiting for the hero to come to america but everything points to it not coming to tmobile. So it wouldnt be any better to me if it came to at&t or sprint.
What i am trying to convince myself of is the ability to install the Rosie Rom on the Mytouch 3g. How practical is this? Is the process the same for the tmobile branded magic as it is for the European magics that people have done this to? Has the Rom been perfected enough at this point to use it in this fashion? I can follow directions as this is how i have been able to keep unlocking and jailbraking my iphone over the last 2 years. But it seems like this process that i have looked at so far for this phone rom is much more complicating than the iphone jailbrake.
So what would you guys do? I appreciate all opinions.
Which is the better phone? I'm currently using a Dash Excalibur with Tmobile but my contract is up and I can go where I want.
I do like the look of the Dash 3G over the Sprint Snap. However, to sync my email, I need to purchase a Good Messaging license for $240/year with Tmobile. With Sprint, the Good Message license is included.
Tmobile has been my only cellphone carrier. 3G is not in my area but it is rumoured to be available in December.
So if I go with the Dash 3G, I'm looking at +$20 more for the phone and then the additional $240 year for email syncing.
I did not really care for the plastic look of the Sprint Snap. But Sprint throws in a few cool things such as NFL Network etc... Any idea of the cost of the Sprint Navigator GPS that is included? The Dash 3G has Telenav which is $14.95/month I believe.
Also, the Verizon Ozone is an option, but I have not see or read anything about that device.
heres all 3 side by side as per phone scoop..
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/compare.php?id[]=2246&id[]=2020&id[]=2062&id[]=&id[]=
feature wise imho the Ozone wins...ive had the chance to play with the Dash 3g and the Snap..but Ozone won over all with the wifi quickness, cdma & gsm compatibility and most importantly PRICE!
check it out..and read the reviews that should help u make ur decision.
Late.
i have the dash 3g it has basically all the features as the ozone but it has a the track ball instead of the d pad which i find a lot better with web pages and just getting around without a touchscreen plus with it being gsm its a bit thinner..... and the battery life is a little better compared to the other 2..... i don't think u can go wrong ether way there great phones
I owned a dash for a few years, loved it. I have the Ozone now, and tell you what, GET IT. spec for spec they are really about the same, but the price on the ozone. $50. Get the data package, but get WifiRouter for $20 flat fee I think, then you can teather via USB or WIFI and bypass verizons additional charge.
I have not had this thing lock up lick my dash did, and 6.5 will be available for it soon.
I went and visited Verizon and TMobile today and checked out each phone. The Sprint Snap is out, no Wifi.
I liked the Dash 3G much better than the Ozone. The styling was nicer, bigger keyboard and trackball was great. The Ozone was good, but I did not care for the shiny plastic on the front and the D-pad was sunken in a bit, unlike my Dash Excalibur. The trackball seemed like a major improvement. I only used it for a bit and I liked it. But I'm wondering if prolonged use would cause problems with soreness in the wrist.
I am also wondering about the Verizon vs TMobile data network. I do not live in a TMobile 3G area so I will be using Edge (rumor we may have TMobile 3G by end of the year). I would have 3G with Verizon. I have not web browsed much since my Excalibur would not load many sites due to memory issues. This may change with a newer device. I did some speed tests and on TMobile (non-3g) I get 180kb/sec. With Verizon, the first 2 tests were also 180kb/sec but then the 3rd went up to 580kb/sec. I have heard that Verizon has a much faster data network than TMobile.
Tmobile rep said the GPS was unlocked so I could use it with Google Maps. I do not wish to pay extra monthly for GPS. I heard Verizon is unlocked as well.
Verizon gave me a quote on a contract and it's $1 more than what I'm paying with T-Mobile. (unlimited data, no tethering)
So if I go with the Dash 3G, I'm looking at $100 more for the phone and the $240 for my corp email sync plus non-3G network. I am not sure if the Dash 3G is worth $340 more over the next year. I'm going to think about it this week but I'm still up in the air.
modding the dash 3g
Does anyone know if you can mod out a dash 3g for instance can you port android to it? I'm interested in buying one but I'm not a winmo fan and I'm on a rooted g1 so I would at least like to be able to mod it out if possible
I tried Dash 3G at corp store
tethering works 100% out of the box, and under 3 modes
USB
bt DUN
bt PAN
once I figured out how to add Trad Chinese support, I'll buy it
I am thinking about getting the HTC Snap from Sprint but there is one problem: No WiFi. I know the T-Mobile Dash 3G and Ozone have WiFi, but I am using Sprint because I get an extremely reduced price on data and texts through my friend. I was wondering if anyone has ever made a Bluetooth WiFi Reciver or a dongle I could plug in the Mini USB, or something like that. I work in a building where cell phone signals are pretty spotty and I'd like to have data indoors.
Also, I read some posts and saw in the specs that the HTC Snap for Sprint has a diffrent processor than other Snaps, and is called Willow and not Maple. Does that mean I can not use the roms from here? Will I still be able to do stuff like install Skyfire or an NES Emulator?
Thank you very much for your help, this website is awesome!
~DtD
PS> You might have noticed above I am currently on T-Mobile, I am switch to Sprint because of the reduced price my friend can get me.
The Sprint Version does not come with Wi-Fi. Sorry.
ur best option of all..get an Ozone from VZW, but order it online from verizonwireless.com. not only will u get wifi and everything else u could want with this little powerhouse, it'll run u less than $100 bucks! just because u get "the extremely reduced price" doesnt mean u should settle for something ur not gonna be happy with. and when u think about it, the price for a dongle or an usb attachment for wifi, plus Sprints pricing for the device u can most likely buy 2 Ozones from VZW.
no i dont work for VZW..just trying to save u a buck in the right areas.
p.s. welcome to xda!
im not talking about ebay or that kind of stuff. im planning to switch from att to tmobile so i hope i can get some sort of discount involved in getting the mytouch when i sign up. tmobile store doesnt sell it without a data plan, and i tried tmobile.com but still no go. does anyone know where else i can find one?
and after i buy it, is it possible to go through activation or flash an activated rom or somehow circumvent it on the spot without a plan? maybe unlock it? thanks.

They are not going to sell it without a data plan at the subsidized rate. You would be paying 600$ for it retail without a data plan.
Activation is on the account, so as long as you have an account setup with Tmo, you can migrate to any GSM unlocked phone you want.
There is a 'one-click root' for the myTouch so you will be able to put one of the ROMs in the dev forum on it.

Well i had read about the magic, ion, sapphire for some time and i was impressed and excited. I didnt even think to check the TMobile MyTouch specifications because it didnt occur to me that tmobile might take the phone and eliminate 1/3 of the ram that was in the magic. The magic has 288mb ram, the tmobile mytouch has 192mb ram. I called tmobile and asked why they ordered it with so much less ram and the response was, "because thats what they sent us". That was seriously his answer and he completely understood my question.
Anyway, the MyTouch has a lot of rom and 192mb ram is plenty but im just so pissed at tmobile for doing that to their phone (and the fact that i didnt get what i thought i was getting), and then not offering the hero update that im determined upon principle to give up this phone and get an unlocked magic. The mytouch is great, it will run donut and other furture firmware updates just fine thanks to its adequate rom (it has the same amount as the magic), and frankly I dont even want the hero update, i prefer the stock google rom, my decision here is totally on principle. I am immature
But if I cant sell this phone for a decent amount Ill still love it for a long time. The phone is beautiful, powerful, and capable and my friends are jealous of it (even the ones with bigger more powerful iphones) but its the horses asses at tmobile i have the beef with, and the only thing i can think to do about it is not use one of their phones. Again, I am immature

I admit, I did find myself a bit miffed as to why T-mobile made that decision. In the end, it worked well for me.
I'm on ATT, so with the Rogers HTC Magic, I get 3g and more ram..
I also sold my white myTouch, but mainly for the 3g issue with ATT, not for the ram one. I'm not particularly attracted to hero.
Like thinkdifferent hinted at, it's important to realize that the difference between the Rogers/T-Mobile versions is not just the RAM. They support different 3G frequencies. You can use the Canadian Rogers version with AT&T (850/1900 MHz), whereas the US T-Mobile version is for the 1700/2100 MHz frequencies.
Both versions have quad-band support for using 2G GSM anywhere.

how much u looking to sell urs for?
is there a quad-band mytouch that i can get with more ram? maybe a radio rom flash? im gonna be on tmobile, mainly bc of the cheap data and msg plans. $10 for internet, and $10 for 1000 texts is unbeatable. my current iphone data is $20, and thats not including texts. i didnt even notice that the tmo version is missing almost 100mb of ram.
Why is it that all the coolest gadgets get to one of the worst carriers first? I love the specs of the Supersonic (EVO 4G) or whatever you want to call it. The problem is with Sprint. I've tested HTC EVDO products (HTC Titan) back to back with HTC GSM products (HTC TyTN). The CDMA products suck battery life much more quickly than the GSM products. If found this on almost every Sprint and Verizon CDMA smartphone. This is probably why the the Supersonic has a larger battery.
Also, it is true that some CDMA products do not allow simultaneous data and voice transmission. This may not be true of this device because it will be able to do CDMA for phone and WimaX for data. I am very interested in this device but I'd be much more interested if this device were on AT&T or even T-Mobile.
I am loving the HD2 running on AT&T. But I'd love more internal memory, the front facing camera, the kickstand, the better camera, etc.
sprint is the cheapest carrier, but valid point with battery useage. I also don't particularly like having to get an "OK" from sprint to change phones. Wish you could use a SIM card.
question though... how often are you browsing the web or using data while talking on the phone? I can't think of one instance in my past 10 years with a cell phone that I needed data while talking. If you're on the net, your data gets put on hold untill after your phone call is over. Back when I had dialup, my phone service offered a similar feature, and cdma does the exact same thing.
As far as everything else, speeds, coverage, dropped calls, annoying but I hear complaints from customers from all the different carriers, it's a cell phone thing.
OH! and where's my damn sprint iPhone? I'm calling BS on cdma getting all the cool toys... I had to wait a year before sprint finally got an android phone, while t-mobile / att had all types of phones that could be used on their network *rage*
let us have our moment in the spotlight for once.... sheesh
hold on boy
i think sprint is the better than att all the way. at least here in San Francisco.
The plans are better than att.
i have friends with their iphones and their internet sucks compare with my htc pro 2 on sprint.
And htc evo data details.
4g + data= Works
3g + data= No
wifi+data=Works
I can't wait for this phone.
No matter what carrier get the cool things first there is always some spoiled brat shouting out loud.

And this @ OP.
I really really hope there is a GSM version coming out soon.
lol there is gonna be a GSM version no doubt. there will definitely be a variant of the Supersonic(aka EVO 4G here in the US for Sprint) in Europe/overseas NO DOUBT that you'll only be able to use on EDGE here but there will probably also be a GSM variant here in the states for another carrier that is basically the same phone but a little different and with different radios or whatever. an example would be the supersonic for t-mobile, lets say their first HSPA+ compatible phone or something, they call it whatever they want and HTC basically makes it for them using the core parts of the supersonic and keeps everything like android and whatnot and just changes up the radio and changes CDMA to GSM and puts in tmo's 3g bands in the radio, and whatever other physical changes t-mo may want like the buttons and whatever.

Last time i checked, Sprint (and by extension CDMA) usually gets last dibs on the cool phones. Name them...Touch Diamond/Pro/Pro 2, HTC Hero, Nexus 1. They never even carried the Touch Diamond 2 till today.
it is true, I wish there were sim cards.. but other than that, in the bay area, sprint kicks ass!
I have never gotten one dropped call since I got my hero, and I talk 2000+ minutes a month. I have 3g almost everywhere.
Also, no matter what people say, sprint has amazing customer service. I mean, at least you don't get put on the line with some indian guy half way around the world who just tells you to turn your phone off then on again...
oh and, at&t just sucks... no matter what hahah I'm glad sprint is stepping up to the plate. they offer amazing deals, great phones (as of now) and I think, are starting to move up in the world

AT&T does suck, but I'm stuck on them. I use Sprint for my data service (aircards FTW) and they have AMAZING customer service. Whereas AT&T just *****es about everything and tells you how wrong you are, then tells you how happy they are you stay them. If they didn't have such fast 3G (which in my rural area isn't crowded, so it is reliable) I would switch to Sprint in a heartbeat. Too bad EvDo pretty much sucks

Or the Nexus
I think the battery suck issue is not so bad given the fact that you can get almost unlimited voice, data, and messaging (of all sorts), plus turn by turn GPS+traffic routing, for $70/mo, less with discounts.
Where's AT&T or TMo's 4G network? I don't hear them actually deploying LTE in any other market other than testing. Kudos to Sprint... psyched for EVO.
ok, so the deal with this phone, ive been reading up on the specs, 4g (6mb/s) is 10x faster then 3g(300mb/s) i run off clearwire internet witch happens to run off the same exact wi-max as sprint and let me tell you, it is FAST. the processor in the phone is a massive 1ghz! for a phone, thats a overkill, plus 588mb of ram... i cant wait to try to overload this phone... probaly take 50+ apps running at once... 4.3 inch touch screen, 8 mega pixel camera, android 2.1 (unless they release a update before the phone is released) i say all in all this phone is going to be by far the fastest android phone on the market, and PS: the HTC HD2 IS the same exact phone just running WinMo 6.5, slightly better processor but clocked the same, same ram, same screen size, its the same phone with a slightly different button layout.
you can check out the side by side specs here

Wrong OS, mate.
he did say "variant"
as in its not exactly the same but close, a knockoff, cousin, whatever. everything is almost identical spec wise just the os is different. thus its a variant. if GSM'ers want the evo in a gsm model. you could help with the port of android to the hd2. just a thought.
.
It's not really a variant. The OS makes them completely different. One is full of future; another is just about dead. Unless someone could port a high quality and well tested Android into it, then it would be a different story.
Well I the closes variant to the Evo 4g is the Desire or Nexus One. If you can do away with the 4.3 inch screen, 4g Wimax, 8MP camera and the extra memory. Well the year is young, so who knows.
Sprint is great in Minneapolis.
Come to papa Evo.
