Hi,
Is there any possibility that you smart guys could extract only the exchange capabilities from HTC's SENSE?
edit sorry guys
1. Wrong section
2. Search Button
3. ... all I am going to say.
Thanks,
There you go. Give it a try.
More politely put no it is not possible but you can use senseui with the normal launcher and have your exchange support.
Or just use touchdown OR motogal and motocal
Widgets
My problem is that I LOVE the widgets. the Calender Widget to be specific. I wish the Android calender would merge Exchange and Google calender information and present it out on a unified calender like HTC does. And I used Modaco's kitchen to dump the Sense UI but that also leaves me without the calendar and mail widgets :-(
Not working
Talderon - I have searched but didn't get a satisfying answer.
InGeNeTiCs - Tried it (adb push), but I don't see any new app..
genibus - If I get you correct, you are saying that the only possible way is using HTC Desire's ROM?

I need to overlay google cal and exchange cal. I am using calwidget which is nice, but I need a full calendar app. (i.e - pick a specific date, and see whats happening in both calendars)
I need to accept calendar invitations from exchange (Push) - motocal can do it only if I happen to navigate to the date and see the event invitation there. there's no way to know you received an invitation, and there's no centralized place where I can see my invitations.
I need to be able to search GAL from the email application. I have motogal, but it's not what i'm looking for. let's say someone sent me an email, I want to forward it to someone in the company. I dont want to go to motogal, search, copy, paste... I want to have the search in the TO field of the wmail app.
I need to search email and calendar..
These are the main problems...
Thanks for the help
Why do people seem to believe that everything can be ported, or "extracted" from everything. Not everything (as sad as this may be to some) can be ported to every single 'thing'. People seem to constantly ask for things from HTC Sense here, but they do not seem to comprehend that HTC Sense requires a specific framework, without Rosie we cannot simply port every minor detail over to the standard Vanilla Android. (From MY understanding, I could be wrong, but this is what I was taught).
Get the Desire ROM, or a imitation, and stop requesting..
This was not directed to the thread creator specifically, though it was to people who are requesting widgets. I really wish people could become a little more educated.. unless me myself is wrong.

You can do all this already, or this is what you want to do?
Let me rephrase my earlier question, I think you misunderstood: What can you currently do that you will LOSE by going to the Desire ROM?

Because that's the idea behind the android OS? That everything is modular. Except that in this case HTC sense is a module for home, and not individual modules.
To the OP: If you want corporate usage, I believe it was pulled from the droid rom successfully. I've seen a few posts allude to it around here somewhere.

Well yes, I know that's the idea behind the Android OS, but not everything can be backported, extracted or whatever as easily as people seem to wish or think..

OHHH sorry I thought you asked a different question.
Actually, I wouldn't mind having a complete sense experience - That would be even better.
But I'm a little afraid to flash the entire Desire ROM because it's still experimental.. isn't it?
I'm currently with Cyanogen so it's not the idea of flashing that bothers me, it's just that specific ROM.
Thanks for your reply.

OK.. Ill give it a shot..
I was just trying to find out if there's a possibility that I wouldn't have to go through this, because all I need is proper exchange support.
Thanks.
Curiosity.
Without a Rooted Incredible I assume I can't install the sensemail.apk on the incredible?
I tried and the app won't install although both are HTC Sense UI's?
Verizon seemed to have downgraded the HTC Mail to only one screen option. I wanted the screen widget that showed the messages in a list not by individual pages where you flip through them to read the headers(single page).
I also tried the extracted widget from the HTC Desire ROM and it didn't want to install. said it was an application error.
Any hints? or just wait for the root?
The new Gmail app looks pretty slick. Would this require an entirely new ROM with the newer Gmail version, as presumably Gmail is so integrated with the sytem. Or, would it be a simple matter of extracting removing some files with root access and installing the new Gmail app (apk).
where have you seen new app for gmail ?
Yea, what are you talking about? The only new thing in Gmail I know about is the Priority Inbox, thats is browser only though, for right now at least.
Yeah, I can't seem to find it now.
I did come across it on one of the blogs I believe a while back. I think it was pulled from one of the recent ROMs. The reply buttons were at the top (no need to scroll to bottom) and other minor improvements were present.
Will let you know if I find it.
http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/08/updated-gmail-app-version-221-brings-improvements-to-htc-evo.html
and here is the apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7597129&postcount=11
I haven't tried the newer app, as I'm sure you would need to root access to overwrite the existing, and even, I'm quite sure something would break.
Alright, so whos going to flash it and see if it breaks anything lol? Come on we need a tester
I just read in that thread it only works for Android 2.2. But, no one has tried it yet to my knowledge using 2.1.
The gmail app was one of the new features of 2.2. I wouldn't try it on 2.1. Most importantly it includes copying text from an email.
It is just another thing we have to wait for in 2.2.
Patience is everything especially if it means you could possibly brick your phone. Gmail is the least of my worried when it comes to this phone so I don't care if it works or not.
Received a parse error upon trying to install it.

Will the G2 Wifi calling feature be able to be adapted to work on our HD2 Android builds?
EDIT UPDATE 11/7/2010
Now that it works on the Nexus one, does this mean that someone can get it going for us HD2 owners as well?

I think we have to mod our phone that ID to Tmobile as G2, to make it works, just like My Account app.

Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.
Thank you.........

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

I don't use stock, and yes I have been able to eliminate VVM.... did you reboot after deleting? Are you looking under system/app?
Yes to both of your questions.
I was thinking the same thing that maybe the program was still resident in the memory so I pulled the battery and everything. It's Sprints FU to the rooting community I guess...............

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............
Thank you all for your help. The android mystery continues..........

No problem! Glad you got it... let me know if you need anything else before I go to my Epic in a week or two
Ok so i have a question, i have an older sister up in a different state and my dad bought her a brand new epic for xmas. Its not activated yet til she gets it obviously so i was wondering:
1. if i sent it to her rooted so i can give her mobile ap and custom kernal all that fun stuff, will sprint know anything if they are just transfering contacts from her old sanyo pink regular phone?
2. Can it be rooted before activation?
Would Greatly appreciate someones insights,
Thanks

only thing about rooting her device and putting all the cool stuff on it is... she's going to have to do all the updates manually. do you trust your sister to do that? if so, go crazy. i sent my brother a pre rooted EVO and he's still running 2.29something. doubt he'll ever make it because he doesn't have the patience to sit on aim with me while i walk him through it and he's dumb as a brick (too dumb to brick it, even)
butttt i work at a sprint store and i'd ask her about her mod and which one it was.. i wouldn't report her or anything.. in fact, there is no protocol to do so. they just don't support the devices - eg. you wont get her screen replaced if bad software killed it under warranty if they can find evidence of tampering with the software
lol but i would support it. then again, im here

There is numerous ones out there just Google transferring phonebook software. I can't remember what I used to have when I worked for T-Mobile something along the lines of Data Pilot I think but don't quote me. Not sure about the rooting question though. I've had the opportunity to root before activating. If you do root before you activate and it does work let me know for future reference please and thank you.
I found it easier to manage my contacts via Google Contacts instead of trying to clean up transferred data from my 4 year old flip phone.
What I did in Google Contacts:
Created a new group labeled "Android"
Cleaned up, added, removed contacts (Initial cleanup took 2 hours, subsequent cleanup is now only 1 minute.)
Assigned the "Android" group to those I wanted in my contact list in the phone.
What I did in the phone itself:
Went into the contact preferences and selected "only show contacts with #s"
Deselected all of the groups from Google Contacts and only selected "Android" to sync
Then I linked Facebook to my phone to allow the auto-sync (for contact photos)
Finally I manually attached FB accounts to contacts that didn't auto-sync
When I want to add a new number, I add it to my Google account from the phone's contact manager, then later just add the "Android" group via the Google Contacts website.
This was the easiest method I found to keep my contact list clutter free, while still utilizing Google Contacts to it's full potential.
