Idea on apps? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

I've been laid off for about 6 months now and I've still been pretty busy with school work but my finals for summer are over next week and I'm already getting pretty bored at the house all day.
I'm a pretty good programmer and I've been thinking about developing some apps in my spare time to ease the bordum. Only problem is that I'm not very creative at all. So I was wondering if anybody had ideas on applications they would use or maybe even buy if were available?
Thanks!

If possible...
A Twittertab was requested on this forum.

Ahh a twitter tab built into manilla would actually be pretty cool.

Here you go...
Take a look at SRS WOW HD, emulate it and make something like it that will work with MS Voice Commander and Manila....
It is the one app that really makes a big difference to the way the device sounds when listening to music and is very good.
It now conflicts with Voice Command somehow and worse yet, makes your phone not wake up from standby.
That would be a worthy pursuit.....
Cheers
Jabberoo

or maybe an app that changes your homescreen wallpaper maybe every hour or every day to some random wallpaper you have on your phone..

there you go, mate, tons and tons to keep you busy - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=454386

or use the new capabilities of the TP2 to make emulators for other platforms

I completely second that! Audio Booster cannot be compared with SRS WOW HD because SRS is waaaay better!

Id like to have some sort of twitter tab/decent app

A great FB app. Currently the ones we have now is pretty weak compared to the ones on BB/iPhone

Yeah I agree, Facebook & Twitter tabs in TF would be great (MS Facebook is rubbish)

I'll get started on a twitter tab come August 12th when I get my TP2

An ebay app that allows you to add watch list ending times as calendar reminders, and to be able to bid would be good. Oh and a decent Football app.

Sounds like a good one to me, FB chat is VERY useful.. ...

A working Ventrilo client for Windows Mobile.
Now there has been a program called Centrilo that worked with pre 3.x ventrilo servers and it was golden. Now that they updated the servers the person who made them became tired of the project and released the source code even for the Centrilo app he made.
Just google up Download Centrilo for Windows Mobile you should find it

iPhone 3Gs user, played with HD2 today...help!

I am a true iphone user for a year now, but thats only because i always want to have the greatest phone. I had a touch diamond before from htc, and it sucked.
Here is what i dislike about the touch diamond:
-Needed a reboot every day.
-Slow.
-Ram becomes filled with nothing quickly.
-sms messages dont arrive sometimes.
-did i mention it was freaking slow?
This is why i chose a touch diamond:
-Touchflow 3d is superb.
Well the iPhone 3gs is certainly better then a touch diamond, but today i saw the HD2 in the store and now im really confused what phone i want.
I have a iphone 3gs and love the huge collection of apps and games.
Like music reconition, watching the newspapers quickly, all the jailbreak emulators, tv guide, jibbigo speech translator, and some other apps.
Again a list of things i like and dislike.
iPhone 3gs things i like:
-Easy.
-Smooth.
-Simple.(has disadvantage)
-Fast, blazing fast!
-The App Store.
iPhone 3gs things i dislike in comparision to the experience i had with HD2 today, and pro's of the HD2:
-Simple. I have to launch a app to get information on my 3gs. With the HD2 you have about 10 things at desame time.
-The screen of HD2.....the size of the screen, the colors and the resolution.
It really made me in love.
-5MP camera with a flash has the HD2, but i know the camera of the iphone is good even with 3,2MP.
-The HD2 has skyfire, and i can watch youtube videos with the builded in browser or not?
-The HD has such a beautiful weather function.
Con's why i still choose for iPhone 3Gs:
-The HD2 aint got the app store. Windows marketplace is a joke so far.
-I dont got beautiful experience with windows mobile.(reboots, ram getting full, not fast but rather slow performance.
-iPhone 3gs got nice and clean sms chat system.
Thing i dont know yet what will help me decide:
-Does the HD2 got flash player in the browser? so i can watch youtube without the decicated app for youtube videos?
-Is the HD2 fast and will it hold being fast?
-Battery Life any good in comparision to the iPhone 3gs?
-Do i have to reboot alot?
-Is the sms receive issue solved already in some firmware update or cooked rom?
-Are there cool 3d games available?
-Are there augmented reality apps and text scanners? (to get text from a photo)
-Are there apps that can replace the apps i use on my iphone the most?
(music reconition for knowing what song is on, a good nice designed msn messenger, decibel meterwebcam viewer, metal detector(because compass) and a app to make encrypted notes?)
Finally, i want to say that im not an apple fanboy. Im a fanboy of the best phone, and im really having a large decision to make here. i love both devices so far.
Any replys will be welcomed alot
Thanks, Borg Queen X.

Skyfire lets you watch flash in browser
I think there's a fix for Opera to allow flash as well

Yes, it's very fast, and only going to get faster with the 1.6x/2.x roms (not to mention the cooked roms in development)
Battery Life any good in comparision to the iPhone 3gs?

Better than the iPhone 3gs even with stock rom, but only slightly. Users of the 1.6x roms report better battery life than stock rom, so yes.

I don't have to reboot often, as far as I'm concerned it's an always-on device. Only times I have to reboot is when installing some apps
Is the sms receive issue solved already in some firmware update or cooked rom?

I don't have the sms issue, only because I don't text much! But it can be resolved by disabling HTC messaging and using pocket outlook. I'm sure there will be a fix for the HTC messaging soon.

There are some very nice games like Texas HoldEm Poker, Asphalt 4, Guitar Hero 5, Sonic, Prison Tycoon, Pool Rebel, Flight Commander, Hawx, The Game of Life, Real Soccer 2010, Electopia, Need For Speed - these all have good graphics and very good gameplay on the HD2

My friend just bought an iPhone and I've compared the two, we both like the HD2 more than the iPhone, he can't get it on his network so he's not very happy
The future looks bright for the HD2 with WM7 coming out soon and lots of chefs on this forum looking to cook up some sick roms, so my unbiased opinion is go for the HD2 if you don't mind tweaking it to get the best experience. If you want a device that achieves its full potential straight out of the box then go for the iPhone.
Hello,
A long list of questions which I will answer as follows:
If you like the HD2 because you have had time to play with it AND it will satisfy your needs rather than you wanting "the best phone" because you get bragging rights with your mates then go for it provided:
- you are happy spending time tweaking it
- happy to search on here for solutions to problems and issues
- enjoy flashing roms and can live with the occasional lockups.
If you like things nice and easy,
- don't have the time to tweak your device
- consider your investment in iphone too good/too much to throw away
- want a device that does what it says on the tin time after time
then stick with the iphone.
Its as simple as that.
WB
thanks! Tweaking is not a problem. Im a jailbreaker myself.
Is it certain that the HD2 will support windows mobile 7? Or is it just a rumour?
Ofcource the specs support the OS...but that wont say it will be released for this phone.
By the way i have another thing...when i was in store today ive tilted the phone up and down...And i saw alot white dots on the screen....maby the touchscreen? Anyways it was not really beautiful.

WM7 upgrade was confirmed by official HTC rep on twitter but removed soon after, make of that what you will.
The grid isnt a problem for me, I can barely see it, it doesnt show at all when the screen is on. Build quality of the phone is top notch, can't recommend it highly enough.
Read the hints and tips thread in this forum to give yourself a taste of what you are letting yourself in for. If after reading you are still happy then you don't need us to tell you what to do.
What you must not do after purchase though is to come on here wailing about what a bad buy it was and how you wish you had stayed with the iphone because all you will get is a serious kicking!
Good luck with your decision.

whoa so many tweaks....awesome!
I wont whine about a bad buy if it works fine. But i dont want a similar experience to the touch diamond i had some time ago. I can smack it on the concrete instantly.
I own a HD2 and I trully like it. One of the best buys I've made.
Nonetheless, I came from a HTC Hero, so I should warn you about some details.
It's harder to find the app you want, because there isn't a true "market", like on Android or Iphone OS. Apps don't have a stylish look (they remind me of old Windows 3.11). There's less variety of apps.
Of course there are exceptions and Roms are a different matter (the xda community is very active).
If you're ok with this, go grab one

yeah i know it from the touch diamond. it is something im gonna miss, but not that much.
But the screen, skyfire, tweaking and touchflo are the main things that drag me to the side of windows mobile once again.
What im scared of is that damn HTC and Microsoft wont give our HD2's windows mobile 7. But if that is released end 2010, i will have a other phone anyways. But a date is not really known right?
Ive seen some 3d games running on the HD2, but i dont think there will come more that fast....
Im also wondering what browser will be faster with tweaks applied(from sticky topic here)
NOOB-----Time Thats the real problem...lol
Sounds like to me you are a NOOB at Windows mobile I own over 6 HTC phones my main phone is the Touch pro2 Nrg 6.5.3 Leo landscape rom and when I had my Fuze it was Fast as ever with full flash web browsing unlike iphone safari see thing is most people have no ideal how are what to do to a windows phone so they just end up saying it cant do things my windows phones had been made into mini laptops as you can see below in some of my screen shots you might wanna ask your self are you ready for a windows phone not is a windows phone ready for you....?

Personally I'm going to try android, probably the xperia x10.
One thing about the HD2 though, is xda devs.
I can only imagine what some of the cooks are going to achieve with such an awesome piece of hardware...............
Still a hard decision to make...advantage is i wont lose money selling my second hand 3gs and buying a new leo.
i think the biggest let down of iphone is the screen resolution.. seriously.. how that happen? I would seriously consider iphone if it weren't for the poor resolution. 320x480.. yeah right..
camera and all is really great with hd2.. with the pink blob fix and the extra fine quality patch, takes superb pictures. couldn't be happier.
FPSece!! PSX emul.. friggin awesome, tho there's a on screen button lag issue which should be sorted quick as the "paid" version has this sorted.
movies... supports most avi and stuff without encoding. tho I had issues playing mp4 I downloaded from youtube.. strange enough that didn't play smooth on TCPMP, and coreplayer didn't even want to try. But most of dvd rips (700mb) movies play great on hd2.
web browsing is much nicer with bigger screen especially on landscape, you don't need to zoom in to read.
HD2 has the BEST GPS. you don't even need a clear line of sight, works in doors and plenty of SAT nav to choose from.
Most of the apps that are popular and common on iphone would be available here on xda. it would do the similar task. so give xda a good search.
I had to reset my phone a lot, take the battery out and all.. but that's because I was on 1.43 stock and I had so much crap installed and removed.. played with too many things and it was like half broken.
recently flashed to Miri's ROM. it's so much smoother and I did have to reset ONCE so far.. it just got stuck on main home screen. But so far so good. might give it another flash to something new soon.
if you've played with HD2, you will notice you don't really deal with winmo 6.5 much.. it's mostly manilla. well at least with the most common tasks. regarding battery, I find it pretty crap to be honest. I wish it was double of what it is now.. it's always on back of my mind, I just use it without thinking too much about it but then the drain on the battery is pretty quick with web browsing and phone calls.. watching movies.. and i haven't even tried playing FF9 yet, wonder how many hours I will get with a full charge. But I think most phones do about similar hours.. well at least you can buy a spare and chuck it on if it runs out.
Alright. Will search for replacement apps.
If i can find them, im on.
Hope i can ask you guys if i cant find some.
I cant find the following apps i use alot on my iphone:
-augmented reality browser > to view near shops, cafe's, bar's, and stuff like that.
-Search name/adress and get phone number, adress and map application. (or does google maps support this?)
-Compass & gps car/location finder.
-Compass & gps star viewer.
-Notes application, with high encryption and password.
-Advanced photo and video editting app.(actually found alot but need the best there is)
-Music creation/beat maker.
Nonsense apps to show off:
seisometer for detecting small vibrations nearby.
beer drinking applications. there is one....but its real crappy.
Gun application.
Voice morphing.
Dice throwing.
Also, all quality games you can think of are welcome.
Especially 3d games.
blower to blow out candles.

AFAIK Augmented reality is coming soon according to WMPowerUser. Google maps will search numbers, addresses etc. In fact most GPS software does this now too (Igo, CoPilot). Igo now supports with the help of some amazing guy on here compass direction combined with GPS support. It also works in Google maps. Not sure about password on notes, but you can encrypt the contents of your SD card anyway (basic wm function). Then, you could just password your device anyway. There are advanced photo editing apps, but when you say advanced, you can't mean full Photoshop type functionality with layer masking and blending etc? Use a PC?! There are apps, as with the iphone but I couldn't be bothered to do it on my phone!! Yes there is music creation/beat maker stuff out there.
No seisometer, quite a few beer ones now, yes to gun, yes to voice morphing and yes to dice. A lot of this stuff I've seen on Modaco but a bit of searching always finds what you need.
WM users have an app store that's better than market place. It's called the internet. Okay so you can't download them directly through your phone as easily, but my goodness there are millions of apps and they don't need to be signed off by Apple. It's a free market....woohoo!!
Oh and just to reiterate a point, fpsece 0.10 PSX emulator is amazing! I'm playing FFVII on it and it's just breathtaking!

- There is a "where is my car" application on XDA
- PocketStars may be old but it's powerful and works with your GPS
- Meteor is a great music creation software
- Voice Twister is a cool voice morphing application
- For games, there's a thread about HD2 games in this forum
This is what I can think of for now, there could be more.

But the only games i found where:

-Experiment13.
-Xtrakt.
Are there more quality games like these? any thread to get me going?
I found alot of threads but they also had games like assasins creed...and when googling for screenshots it looks real crappy.
NFS Undercover
Racing Academy
Spiderman
Prince of Persia
...
Or just install FPSECE and play those thousands of PSX games, they are better than anything you find in the Marketplace or AppStore or elsewhere...

Music ID Application

Hi people, thought I would share a new application I found using "Omarket", for those who don't know what it is, its like windows market place but most of the cabs are free ware and actually made by some guys round here. Its pretty cool. The music identification application is called "Midomi"
I was using MusicID but this linked in with Shazam and so eventually it expired and wanted cash- aye right. Anyway I found this this app and I`m very happy with it. Basically, "hum a tune" or let it listen (grab) a tune for 10 secs, it then tells you what it is but ALSO gives you a preview of the song just so you are sure. Really am quite impressed with this and want you guys to get the benefit too. You may have heard of gracenote - similar thing.
Have tested it using TV and radio songs so far 100%, however it will never get my weird 60's psych stuff or my bad singing voice :/

Thanks for the heads up.

but midomi found out every song
really useful and good to delete discussions at the tv, when everybodys asking "what song is that?"

Did you sing or play it?
Ambient noise may interfere but bear in mind what it is actually doing; its cross referencing the results with like a million formants or "peaks" of millions of songs it can give strange results sometimes. Sing "yellow submarine" by the beatles, that's a good example of how it does work with general tracks. Not sure how it would stand in a club but better the microphone, better the results imo
I use Shazam Encore. Works pretty good.

Since Multitasking is the thing android boasts, why does it suck so badly?

Why couldn't it be more like the Palm Pre? I mean even my jailbroken iphone could pull off some multitasking that looked damn close to the pre.
I think the biggest thing I hear about android is it's got real multitasking (which works and I love), but I don't see why they couldn't make it better, or at least better looking. It's based on linux and there are some pretty snazzy graphics out there for that.
Personally, having used the jailbroken multitasking solutions on previous iPhones I didn't find them that great or graceful. The Palm Pre is still the king of multitasking hands down.
Android is working on it. Gingerbread will bring an improved UI with more flashy animations/graphics. For now, holding down the Home button is an acceptable method.

neither do i. i would like a explanation what the evo is not doing.
you compare the pre to be the king of multitasking? windows mobile (touch pro2 which is with me daily in addition to my evo) multitasks beautifully and so does android in my experience with android (hero from launch day and win mo since 2002). just the other day i was on a call , was updating some apps and using tapatalk on a forum. i even had lookout scanning the apps as they were installing.... (4G area). phone did not hiccup... stock non rooted. thats multitasking to me...
I use MultiTask Manager, and it's totally configurable and display the following:
- Running Apps
- Recently closed apps
- Fav Apps
Also you can hide apps that you don't want to see, max number of apps, background and much more.
I have the icon on my main screen
Is free.

It sounds to me like the op is only concerned with how asthetically pleasing multitasking is. The fact that android doesn't have the pretty cards animation that the webos and jailbroken iPhones have means it sucks. That seams silly to me. Wanting nicer animations is fine, but saying that multitasking sucks because of the lack of these animations is silly.

If that is the case, then the OP doesn't understand the design philosophy behind Android multitasking.
1) All apps are loaded into memory from the get go.
2) Task managers are unnecessary, just pick whatever app you want to switch to, and start it to switch to it. Hence the last 6 used apps menu when holding down the home key.
In a sense, Android multitasking is intended to be superior to any other implementation - there's no need to be even thinking about it. It just does its thing.
I like multitasking on Android way better than the Pre. First off it works without me having to worry about what's open, second I never get an error telling me to close apps even though no cards are open. Third it just works on Android. palms system is nowhere near stable yet, and backgrounder on iPad has closed apps so often that multitasking was bad.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
I as well fail to see a problem with Android's multitasking abilities.
same....OP please elaborate.
I understand what the OP means... I have BOTH and the Pre DOES BEAT Android in multitasking capabilities.... I'll give u an example
On my Evo, I use Tweetcaster a lot...let's say I need to open up ZumoDrive and share something... I hit home, then open programs then open up ZumoDrive... If I wanna go back to where I was prior (Tweetcaster, looking at a persons profile), I hold the home button...and select Tweetcaster from the recently used apps, and it reopens the app from scratch, forgetting about where I was previously. That's just 1 example (that I happened to think of right now, but there's others) Another would be, try downloading a mp3 from the web browser and playing it...then switch apps... The song stops (unless u play it from the music player)
And the problem with the jab at WebOS saying well, you don't get too many cards errors in Android; well wouldn't exist b/c well for 1, the Evo has a 1GHZ processor and 512MB Ram... Compared to my original Pre (non plus) with much slower CPU; that's a no brainer that the Evo would be able to handle the tasks more effectively, (yet the GPU performance on the Pre is better, go figure)
But, it does sound like the OP was referring more to the way it looks... while, I don't care what it looks like... I just want it to work better.

I agree with the mp3 thing. It's annoying. I think there must be better mp3 players out there.
Try Quickdesk. You won't be disappointed.
Yeah I've experienced that problem with the mp3 player. I've noticed it varies from App to app. The standard music app will stop sometimes, as does Xiialive - but Last.fm app seems to be extremely stable - never had it stop regardless of what I was doing. I don't think there's anything wrong with holding the home button - it works nicely but I am more concerned about how programs function while in the background. As I mentioned it seems to vary from program to program, and the are said to be revamping the standard music program, so I guess we can keep our fingers crossed.
I doubt it will be much work to fix but I agree, they need to step it up a notch in this respect.

But that isn't a good example because that isn't what should happen with the current paradigm. I've left countless programs and come back to exactly the same spot when I return. Something else is going on there. How many programs are you using in between these two? Are you waiting a bunch of time? Maybe Android closes out programs after a certain period of inactivity.

This one confuses me. I can play music with something other than the music player and switch apps without the music stopping no problem.
If I were to offer one easy change to the current UI, it would be to put a little circle or star on the icons next to the programs that are still processing in the recent apps list. That's the only issue I can see. I can't tell which ones on that list are closed and which ones are still open.

Trillian for Android: Your Thoughts...

So, I just downloaded this bad boy and been enjoying it so far. Definitely a lot better than Fring and Nimbuzz. If there was one thing I would change, it would be the option to reduce the size of the avatars and contacts names on the list. With such a large screen, we would be able to fit most, if not all, of our contacts without the need for scrolling.
Anyways, aside from that, my main concern is battery consumption. What are your thoughts so far? How much drain are you experiencing with it? How does it compare to other Multi-IM apps out there?
Let's get some convos going!
PS - BTW, here's the link for the BETA: http://www.trillian.im/learn/tour-android.html
thanks for the heads up... been waiting for this or beejive for the longest
Android Cloud to Device Messaging?
Does anyone know if it uses the new Android Cloud to Device Messaging? If so that should seriously improve its battery consumption over other IM apps.
I haven't tried Trillian but Meebo works just fine. Meebo also has a nice web client that I have been using for years.

Yea i downloaded a few hours ago and its running beautiful. i havent noticed anything when it comes to the battery YET, i will confirm that tomorrow. I also agree with you when it comes to the Avatar size, with my Evo they look way too big. other then that great APP!
Just reading the name "Trillian" makes my blood boil.
I'm enjoying it so far. I like the interface better than eBuddy, and it doesn't show a notification icon while it's running in the background. I'm really impressed with it just being a beta, and I'm looking forward to the updates.
I've been using it and it's the best IM app yet. I'm a bit concerned about battery life though. I receive messages while on background but they're not instant, meaning it looks like the app is polling the server, which would drain the battery as opposed to keeping a push connection.
Update: Okay now all of a sudden my messages are coming right away. Maybe it's push? Also, I've noticed under settings, you can have it send a notification to your push Gmail account when someone IMs you you select "Suspend" instead of "Sign off", which would save a lot of battery.

LOL. Tried it (desktop version) a few times in the middle of the decade. It was always way too bloated and resource-hungry, yet never had any features I actually wanted or needed. I'm sure the Android version is different, but the brand name means I will never touch it.

Yeah, I was never a fan myself. But I kinda got tired of IM in college. Started out in the early days of ICQ and Messenger, graduated to AIM, then I just got tired of other people.
Glad you at least got my reference, though.
tried it, looks pretty, not impressed
Tried it looks ok but I really need a client with true push notifications the cloud iphone Type

it actually looks like they are using Push for background notifications. That's what I just read on their blog.

I gathered that there is some confusion on what suspended means in that asp and so it is not clear to me what exactly they are doing
i loved trillian back in the day... when i actually IMed people. i may download this just to take a look. nice find.
I like it but I definitely think that the avatars are a bit too large on the Evo. Needs a skin to fix that...
Lets see what the battery impact is...

get it from eCrater.com from Tech Direct i believe it's called... it will be $177 total (including shipping) but i got mine in 3 days.... I ordered Thursday of last week Very good seller
I have been emailing manufacturer's because they are apparently working on software to use with the device to pair to the phones. There are no current apps that utilize call handling from Phone to Watch so the device is more of a standalone device for now. Plays videos, good camera, touch functionality is good, it got a little bit hot while i was runing ADW launcher so i uninstalled that... stock launcher runs fine. Charges fast - FM radio feature is pretty damn cool however you have to use stock headphone it comes with as antenna, they plug in via micro usb. Overall great build quality... Looks like an HTC One LOL
Looks good

In the video, the person said that the battery will last 1 and 1/2 days. (Not a China dude but I still understand their Singlish)
Btw the battery life is probably the same for other similar smart watches unless they have battery tweaks like the Qualcomm toq and the pebble smart watch which reduces or fully disables touchscreen and colour
Well the battery life i don't know because i haven't killed it yet..... The battery meter goes up and down QUITE a bit though so i can't get a real good read on the battery gauge, which is kind of frustrating...
So far i've rooted and changed the boot animation with rom toolbox pro. I cannot get the stock lock screen clock and launcher to go away tho, even after changing the filenames in /System/App which leaves me boggled. I am running ADW and a large digital clock on my homescreen and would rather unlock to that then the analog clock.
If you guys are interested, i did a quick review of the watch i will upload to youtube tonight and make new thread with video

What are its capabilities as far as connecting to a phone
Short review
I just received mine in the mail and must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Build quality is excellent. The screen is bright and hires enough to be able to read everything. Wifi is stable and quite good, in contrary top most other China devices I have (mostly JXD). Of course the keyboard is a bit cramped and hitting the right letter is a gamble but the screen is sensitive and it doesn't take a strong touch. The interface is very smooth and responsive. I have installed a few apps which work well. The only thing that keeps crashing is Skype, which is weird as it came with the watch. There seems no way to use Google Now either (it keeps crashing) which is a pity as I don't want to even think about searching with the on-screen keyboard. The loudspeaker is okay (not great). I haven't tried using it to call anyone yet, that will be next on my list. I just noticed that the watch doesn't take micro sim cards. That quite surprising for such a small device. Now I'll have to go out and buy a regular sim card. I'm not a big fan of adapters.

It looks like a nice device I'm torn between buying this watch or just waiting around for the kickstart project Neptune Pine. Which seems to be a much more polished product
I'm also thinking about getting this or the neptune but the Pine looks so big it will make my already small wrists tiny!
I like the idea of the Pine but think I might go for the ZGPAX....

The thing is that its recognized by bluetooth as a phone so there is file transfer capability but not call handling or notification handling until the manufacturer releases an app to provide support for this... I would advise anyone who purchases to try and contact the manufacturer and get this info. Ive been looking a week now for an app in the store but have found nothing.
