Trouble going back to stock (searched and found no help) - G1 General

I looked around and I couldn't find the answer.
Last night I stumbled upon a certain site which clearly explained how to root your G1 and so I did. Everything was fine until I got the OTA update notice and actually updated my G1 to cupcake.
At first it worked fine but then after restarting the phone I noticed it was no longer rooted and so I tried to go back and do everything over again.
I've tried going back to RC29 as described on the "How-to-Root..." thread and it just won't work.
It quickly displays "no image file!" then goes back to the RGB screen and just shows "Serial0"
That's all I can get it to do.
I've tried both the "how to root" and "how to unroot" guides and nothing is working. Either I get the "Installation aborted" message in the recovery mode or "no image file" message in the boot menu.
I've formatted both cards I've tried this with numerous times with no luck. I'm obviously new to this and would extremely appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks in advance.
The Phone is working fine with Cupcake installed after the OTA update but I'm stuck here. I'd like to give root another go.

at least you are getting something OTA
Ditto
Unfortunately, I get the same thing. I was rooted, but I unrooted (not quite as thoroughly as you did, as I only used the "Unroot" option, but we got the same results). Wonder if it is something wrong with the update...

Did you change ANYTHING when rooted? Did you freeze, rename, modify or delete ANY of the files in the original ROM in any way, shape or form?
Same thing here
When I bought this device 3 weeks ago, I rooted it with z4root. Not too long after an update disabled z4root on the tablet.
I thought no big deal, but then today comes and I the OTA update won't work.
Anyone more experienced than me have any ideas of how to get this update applied properly?
Me too. Update failed to install. Not sure why. I have also tried unrooting.

I'm confused, if I froze an application, didn't unfreeze it but did a factory reset...wouldn't that resolve the issue?
ok so i woke up this morning and my a500 notified me the there was an update available so as you can imagine I was very happy to finally have this, so i updated and when it was done it said update successuful but when I checked it still said 3.01......WTF
Not rooted ever..
Those interested in getting back their OTA, properly backing up their original ROMS or restoring them, please follow the tutorials in this thread:
Going back to stock TUTORIAL
Be helpful and provide your firmware if you have a backup so we can build a database for those who don't.
Be sure to report what is working and what is not working for you once you've tried the tutorials!
Unlike the 14 threads on these matter I take the responsibility as OP to upgrade my original post as firmwares and new info becomes available.
Let's create a focused troubleshooting and tutorial thread,
Thanks.
I'm rooted via gingerbreak and the update worked fine while still rooted. It did break root. Just had to re-apply gingerbreak and all is good, back to root with latest update.
gingerbreak worked with official 3.1 ?
it didn't work with 'leaked' 3.1 ?
OTA
Ok after long night and hours of research i found out a lot.
1 if you have modded ad hoc in wpa_supplicant file recover the original file
2 if you have modded the phone.apk and telephoneyprovider.apk to save battery this is the reason why you won't get the update.
i put these files back and instantly got an update, i mean the exact second i set those back
i can't believe this my updates keep failing to install. FING POS i tried everything, factory reset
i have tried everything, even factory reset, it fails while installing after reboot
acer support are a bunch of retards, they don't even know they sell tablets????????
need help i can't upgrade, it fails every time
does anyone know where the install logs are
the log is \cache\recovery\last-log
Oklahoma City, OK noon CST
First attempt failed:
Changed the wpa_supplicant back to original and all went smooth the second time
I never changed anything and it failed.
**Edit: I rebooted my devices and left it completely alone after unzip and it rebooted into recovery mode and seems to be installing **
I had the same problem, It was pretty disheartening.... but I unrooted my device, re-booted and tried again and SUCCESS!!!
But now I can't get it to re-root using gingerbreak... HELP!
SUCCESS!
Ok. I got OTA update 4.010.08 (122.71 MB) this morning. It failed.
So I unrooted my device. Re-started it and tried again... SUCCESS!
I tried using Gingerbreak to root it again. FAIL!
So I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
SUCCESS!
Hope this helps those of you who are having problems.
No need to unroot nor go to stock.
I had the same issues. Then I simply used Acer Recovery to install stock recovery and everything worked fine.
Ceger
Acer Recovery?
Did Acer Recovery come with the tablet?
I tried the update numerous times over the last 4 days. Most of the time the download would fail, which I put down to my slow internet connection and overloaded Acer servers. But about 5 times it would finish downloading and then error out on install with a message about the update being invalid. I tried rebooting several times during this process. I have never rooted the tablet and only have a few apps installed as it was a recent purchase.
Finally it worked when I ejected the external SD card and rebooted. It may be a coincidence, but anyone else who gets the "invalid update" warning during install on an unrooted device may wish to try this prior to the download/install.

[Q] Continue to fail updates 4.010.24

Received the update notification this morning, happily started downloading and installation.
Like some out there, the tablet rebooted and it seemed to install but up to about 1/4 progress it froze with a central honeycomb logo with exclamation mark. Thought it was part of the process, left alone for an hour but nothing happened, hence rebooted with a notification of 'update failed'.
Searching through google and xda forum the last 2 hours -- have tried the unrooting the device, plugging in to power, removing sd card to no avail.
Someone has also suggested to restore wpa_supplicant file under system/bin. I don't remember altering the file at all, and when I check the file it is dated 29/3/2010... i bought my device in April, hence assuming it has not been altered either by myself or from any app. Like wise for the telephony files as well, as I haven't changed anything to try to stop the cell standby issue to improve battery life.
I am left with no options unless someone has a better idea. I have not uninstalled any pre-loaded apps. Rooted with Gingerbread (and as I said tried unrooted and re-rooted without success in updating).
Thoughts?

Android version 3.0.1
Kernel 2.6.36.3
Build no. Acer_A500_1.139.04_COM_GEN1
Failed system update to 4.010.24
I am located in Melbourne, Australia.
(Last thing would be to download the actual rom and update via CWM.)
open /cache/recovery/last_log on your tablet use root explorer
ypu will know whats wrong
I'm in Melb too, and that particular update has failed to download about 5 times now, and when it finally downloaded, it came up with a message saying "update invalid" or something along those lines. I'm gonna wait til I get home to try and update again.
altering WPA_Supplicant file is something you would've done so your tab would connect to ad hoc networks. Must be something else.. did you alter any other files? I'm working on this same issue. frustrating as f*#%
I was running stock rooted 3.01 and was failing updates over and over until I flashed back to the stock recovery using the Acer recovery apk. As soon as I did that and tried the ota update again it worked right away... once 3.1 was installed I rerooted using iconia root 2.1 and flashed cwrecovery back to tablet... let me know if this helped

Same for me. Had to go back to stock recovery for the OTA update to work.
Mine failed the first time. I rebooted and it worked the second time.
I tried using Acer Recovery Installer 1.5, checking Stock USA 1.141.07_COM_GEN1 and touched "install recovery image", rebooted, and nothing happened?
My build number remains 1.139.04_COM_GEN1
I am sure I have missed something...
Tried downloading and installing the 5th time, still failed and stuck at the same progress bar of 1/4 followed by that annoying honeycomb with exclamation mark logo.

If you see the little bee fail screen, it is not the stock recovery, but still CWM.

Hi .. try to do that...
the uploaded file helped and solved my issue..i'm now running Honeycomb 3.1
Solution posted by Bob here: (correct the link below "www")
w w w.androidtablets.net/forum/acer-iconia-tab-a500-forum/18444-update-failed-help.html
Here's the WPA_Supplicant from my A500, after the 3.1 update. Hope this works for you guys.
I'm not sure what the extension is for the A500, but I had to add .zip to be able to upload it. Try removing the .zip before using it. Also, remove the 'original'. I added that to keep it straight on my tablet.
Good Luck.
Bob
p.s: sorry i'm a newbie here and can't post link outside the forum at the moment..
just follow the steps described by Bob!
I did see that different logo, which I subsequently rebooted as I thought it's frozen again.
Interestingly, I tried to push for another system update, attempt no. 7, and now, it progresses and complete update!!! Woo hoo!
Thanks for all the help. I still don't know which one sorts what out though... Cheers!

Need Help

I looked around and couldn't find a solution for this.
I flashed to the GPE ROM upon getting my new S4; everything went smoothly and the ROM worked. However, when I went to activate it with Ting this evening, I learned that I should have activated on stock firmware then flashed the custom ROM. I used ODIN to attempt to restore to stock and I ended up at a screen that said something along the lines of "Firmware upgrade has encountered an issue". I rebooted several times into download mode, but this message appeared every time I tried to boot to either revovery or Android. Conveniently when I went to see the error to provide the exact wording, it booted straight to the GPE ROM.
I still need to restore to a stock ROM though to activate on Ting. What is the process for this (even a link to a thread/post I overlooked will do)?

Could you point me in the right direction for that? Everything I have tried so far seems to fail...
Edit: I got back to the NAE stock rom, but I can't downgrade the modem from NG2 back to NAE...
Edit2: I didn't need the correct modem to activate, I guess. Flashing back to GPE, will update this again.
Final Edit: Once I activated on the stock ROM, everything seems to work perfectly on the GPE. Thanks for the suggestion, i7vSa7vi7y!

SuperSU in app update failed - every app stopped working

I hope I'm posting this at the right place. I have to start off by saying that I'm almost a complete noob regarding rooting and things that have to do with it. I rooted my phone about 6 months ago I think and the reason why I did that was only because I wanted to be able to freeze down some apps with titanumbackup. Since it's been such a long time ago I've forgotten almost all those steps I did when I rooted my phone.
Anyways back to the issue. So today I got a notification from SuperSU saying that it needed to update. I didn't think too much about it so I just followed the notification and updated it. When I started SuperSU I got 2 choices. Either updating normal or by TWRP/CWM. The dumb me just pressed TWRP/CWM for no reason and the phone rebooted into recovery mode. A lot of text started scrolling down at the bottom left corner and when it finally stopped it said something along the line with update failed. I pressed "reboot the system now" from the list and after that my phone rebooted. The samsung logo popped out as usual but after that the screen was completely black. Then I got a lot of popups telling me that this and that app stopped working. Contacts stopped working, whatsupp stopped working, messenger stopped working etc. Like all the apps stopped working.
So I've been trying to google a solution to this but it doesn't seem like someone has had the exact same problem. I've been trying to research things about rooting and such again to see if it can help me someway but I don't think I can't fix this problem by doing just that, so therefore I'm writing this to see if you guys can help me since you have waaay more experience than me when it comes to rooting. I've tried flashing CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505 again using odin but the problem stays. I've tried updating to the latest stable SuperSU by downloading the zip file and putting it on the sd card and then using recovery mode but it didn't work either (I got an error E: signature verification failed). So after reading about the error I tried flashing a CWM but everytime I do that with odin I either get a FAIL or I keep getting the messages (Added, removed, added, removed). I download kies to get the drivers but it didn't help. and now when I try to boot into recovery mode my phone just keep rebooting.
I really don't know what to do now guys so I hope you guys can help me out :crying:

Right now I don't see any other choice than flashing a stock rom.
Or you could try reflashing the recovery.
Make sure you are using the back USB ports and the original cable. Odin is quite sensitive with this.

I am having problems flashing stock rom and locking bootloader

So basically, few months ago i tried to root the phone, get new recovery and different rom. If I remember correctly I got stuck trying to get custom recovery to work, because everytime I restarted phone it would be replaced by the stock one. So I left the phone as it was, and disabled the TWRP app on it. Problem was, I could not update phone. Today I tried to completely revert to stock.
I flashed stock recovery but when I tried to install update from the phone storage, it did not even give me option to select a file.
I tried to update the recovery to newer one which gave me the option to select a file, but the installation got canceled after few seconds, putting me back on the file selection screen in recovery.
I tried to instal TWRP but I can't even boot into it at all because the phone is just stuck with blackscreen and lightblue led light.
I tried to ADB sideload the newest stock rom that I downloaded from OP5 site but this one went to around 50% and then crashed as well.
I also tried to do the update using the Settings>System update > Local Upgrade but this one also fails once it gets into recovery.
I tried wiping cache/reset system settings or wiping every data on the phone before any update but none of it seems to help and everytime I restart the phone afterwards the TWRP app is still there needing an update.
I tried to just lock the bootloader but I got the "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and will not boot" message followed by link to google support. I assume that is because of the TWRP app that is on the phone but I can't get rid of it no matter what I try. I tried searching for people having simillar problems but I couldn't find anything that would help me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
You can go with the last resort and use the Unbrick tool.
