New Phone and Roms

Hi,
I am due to get my new HTC Touch HD from Orange tomorrow and i was wondering if someone could explain what the roms on here are able to do that the original rom wont be able to do.
I am Completely new to this as this is my first WM Device.

What you need to do is read the wiki (see signature), and rom related threads, as to answer your question would take to long and as the previous person mentioned, we have been here before.
Do a search in the rom development forum and read the first few posts on each rom which will tell you basically what that rom includes. Do the same for whaever roms you are interested in and then try them out if you want.
All I can say is read read read and follow guidelines regarding flashing in the wiki and cRaCKwHoRe's guide. Both can be found in my signature

It may appear daunting at first, but everyone here was in your shoes at first. After reading the wiki and implementing advice/tips/tweaks etc listed within you should be on your way to understanding. As a close mate (cRaCKwHoRe) said, if you read the wiki you'll know what I know, and this is the truth
There is also guidelines and tutorials on how to flash to knew roms and improve radio (reception) etc.
All information on each rom is listed on first few posts of each thread on that particular rom.
If you have any problems on any topic people here will gladly assist you (well most). If no one helps you, which I doubt, PM me.

Errors!!!!

i'm in need of some help... i have had my wing for a few months now and i discovered all the beautiful f**kin things you can do with it but everytime i try to flash when it gets to the RUU my comp give me an error message that i need to check my update utility...whats the prob? am i missing something???

Have you tried to Hard Spl first? When I first started out, I could use the uspl method one time, but I got all kinds of errors until I hard spl'd.

Errors still !!!
ok stupid question what is hardSPL? and how would i do it? still new to this... finally got the games to work.. i want to get different roms..but if i cant get past the damn flash its no use....any links i can try?

What are Roms?

Hello everyone this may be a silly question but I see a lot of talk about roms within these forums can someone please tell me what are roms and how to install them.
Are they like cab files? or is it more like a OS system for mobile devices...
Will Roms override the os system that's on my device now? thanks for any info on this

the rom is the whole OS, including any pre installed programs. It is a big file, around 200meg that gets flashed to the rom memory chip on your phone. When you boot for the first time, it configures (installs, sets itself up) itself onto your device.
If you install a new rom, it completely removes the old rom, so if you hard reset, you get a fresh copy of teh new rom, you can only go back to teh original rom by flashing the original one again.
Think of it a bit like the windows cd that you use to install your PC.

I flashed my first rom about 4 months ago using the how to section for noobs. I read it several times, did each step one at a time, testing at each stage to make sure I'd done it right and it works like a charm. Best place to start.

Um..........I'm sorry but i don't get this i've read this thread over and over, and it helped me understand what they are, but not how to use them or modify them........
I'm not trying to revive this thread for no particular reason, but understand what exactly happened, and learn about the topic of this thread.......

As mentioned, there are plenty of tutorials on how to install roms and all about roms in the forums

i asume u are asking about flashing the cooked roms
for the same u need to first root ur phone their are many stikies on the same
but i have used the 1Click by maverik and it worked for me and yes u do have the risk of loosing ur warranty if u do a root but then u can first creat a gold card and them do the root( i dont know how to do this u need to read on the same ) or u can look for ur orignal rom and save it on ur pc and flash the same if u want to give ur phone for warranty that is what i have done i have the original asia rom with me and i will flash the same wen i need to give my phone for warranty issue i hope this is detail enough

There are hundreds of treads on the matter! Just search! There's a Q&A thread, a on-click-root method and a thread with all ROMs in one place. Get going!

overwhelmed

ok so I have been using the stock rom and all the stuff on my phone but it keeps getting bugged out of the screen gets unlocked randomly and does stuff when its in my pocket which is very annoying and a friend told me android just kills winmo..
but im looking at this forum and its just overwhelming..i see errors i see solutions i see roms i see this that ...I have NO IDE where to start!
so I got a little list with questions
:
1.if I instal any android version, do I lose all my programs,contacts basically information i have ?
2.how much better is it for an average user to go to andoid? average i mean i dont tweak it that much just used cookie home tab and bsb to upgrade performance but that is it..
3.how do i go on about installing apps on my android? i mean does it use bsb and cht? or like games from windows marketplace? how do i instal stuff like poker games and all the nonsense?
4.where do i get the most easy tutorial on how to put andoid on my phone? I dont want to read a whole page long of explanations on how to's i just wanna instal all the necessary apps or whatever and be done with it(i know im lazy)
so yeah any1???

Don't do this if you're too lazy to do some reading. You can potentially brick your phone if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing, and I know it's overwhelming the first time, but it's worth reading all these technicalities.
Just follow the stickies, or stick with winmo.

thanks for the tip..but updating my rom was way more easy then they showed..thats what i meant sorrry...
like when i first got the phone i went here and was like WOAH so many stickies etc...then i just downloaded the stuff i needed (hspl) and did what i thought made sense and it all worked perfectly...so the reading isn't all that needed imo..thats why i want a link to some basic introductions on what to do

its all installed on an SD card so it doesnt touch your current set-up (windows mobile)
install 1 see how you like it if you dont just reboot your phone back to windows easy
and i mean easy just follow the steps like im sure u did with hspl and trying different roms.

huh so andoid is installed OVER winmo? not instead of? this got me confused!

yeah so if u dont have an sd card u cant run android! best of starting with a nicely formatted sd card with only the android files on it, just remember to choose the right radio

hmmmm but why doesnt it run instead of winmo if i may ask? wont that make it way faster? :O but damn that sucks haha my sd card is full of stuff i need i guess ill put it all on my pc for the time being then! so how do i go about choosing a right radio? i never understood that haha i think ima just use the latest one i read on the tutorial
now that i thnk about it..you have to boot up android EVERYTIME you turn off your phone? that sucks :/

but at least if you run android you might just like it wayyyyy better???? enough to put up with booting after windows is loaded, try n see buddy,,, try n see

little offtopic but im flashing a new radio on it along with the guide you guys gave me for andxoid and it gives me [ERROR260] connection
it says it cant connect or something after like5mins of the program running..i have enough bat life(89%) so thats not the problem :/ any1?

no it doesnt run from the phone, you have to manually start it eeach time you reboot the phone, if that is too much hassle then to be honest, you are best off either sticking to winmo or selling the phone and getting a proper android phone

well here there whine * i did read the must red thread BUT i came across some problems which is why i asked what or how to fix the code 260 error with RUU, if that is fixed then I'll be able to install a new radio and a new rom AND after that run the android ....i tried running A now but it just freezes and dies because i do not have the latest/best suited rom and radio to do the job...sorry if i do not know how this forum works the first few times i use it im not a nerd I agree, i do not know allot about pc's and phones and how the exactly work but I THOUGHT thanks to a forum dedicated to sharing and helping I could gain skills and knowledge so I do not have to ask new stuff the next time.
